The acclaimed animated documentary Flee (Jonas Poher Rasmussen, 2021), which tells the story of Amin Nawabi and his journey from from Afghanistan to Denmark as a refugee, is the subject of Episode 103 of the podcast that reflects on the shared ability of animation, fantasy and the documentary format to ‘reveal.' Joining Chris and Alex for this instalment is Dr. Cristina Formenti, Assistant Professor in Film Studies at the University of Udine in Italy, and author of a number of books on animation and documentary, including Il mockumentary: la fiction si maschera da documentario (2013), and her latest book The Classical Animated Documentary and Its Contemporary Evolution (2022). Cristina is also the editor of the volumes Mariangela Melato tra cinema, teatro e televisione (2016) and Valentina Cortese: un'attrice intermediale (2019), while her work has appeared in various national and international journals, such as Studies in Documentary Film, Alphaville, and Horror Studies. She is currently the co-editor of the journal Animation Studies and serves on the Board of the Society for Animation Studies. Listen as they discuss the value of animated reconstruction, fictionalisation, and the authenticating use of live-action footage within Flee's predominantly animated aesthetic style that potentially ‘corrects' its cartoonal qualities; the role of memory and the subjectivity of experience; connections between imagination, emotion and trauma; shifts in the animated style of Jonas Poher Rasmussen's film between raw nightmarish impressionism and heightened visual detail; the ‘fable' and ‘sober' as useful ways to categorise the historical trajectory and stylistic approaches of the animated documentary; the experiential effects of subjective narration and the film's intimate interview style, and what happens when vocal recordings in the documentary have to be falsified; and how Flee offers a narrative of reconciliation that mirrors animation's own creative combination with certain recognisable documentary conventions. **Fantasy/Animation theme tune composed by Francisca Araujo**

Flee (2021) directed by Jonas Poher Rasmussen. Flee tells the story of Amin Nawabi as he grapples with a painful secret he has kept hidden for 20 years, one that threatens to derail the life he has built for himself and his soon to be husband. Recounted mostly through animation to director Jonas Poher Rasmussen, he tells for the first time the story of his extraordinary journey as a child refugee from Afghanistan. CINEMA! E ANCORA CINEMA!

This week on End Credits, we're running. Our movie of the week almost literally has "run" in the title as it tells the story of man who spent almost the entirety of his youth trying to escape. For the review this week, we're watching the three-time Academy Award-nominated movie Flee, and before that we're going to run through some other movies about escape. This Wednesday, April 20, at 3 pm, Adam A. Donaldson and Tim Phillips will discuss: Escape Fan. This week's movie is about one man's struggle to escape, which made us think about other movies where someone or some people are trying to escape, whether that's a physical escape or a mental one. So to kick off the show, we're going to talk about some of the best escape movies, including flights from prison, captivity in a small enclosed space, and getting off the post-apocalyptic penal colony that's the island of Los Angeles. REVIEW: Flee (2021). Never before has there been one movie nominated as the Best Documentary Feature, Best Animated Feature, and Best International Film, but Flee did it. The hat trick was received for a film that tells the story of a man named Amin Nawabi, who, as a kid, escapes the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan, and then has to escape Russia in the last, corruption-filled days of Communism. Can you tell the deeply personal true story of escape and solitude using animation? It turns out you can, but is Flee as good as its three big Oscar noms? End Credits is on CFRU 93.3 fm and cfru.ca Wednesday at 3 pm.

Flee, released in 2021 and directed by Jonas Poher Rasmussen, follows Amin Nawabi (a pseudonym) as he recounts a secret past that threatens to harm his upcoming marriage. We follow Amin and his family over the course of his childhood as they escape from Afghanistan following the Afghan War and Amin eventually makes his way to Denmark. Told through beautiful animation, we are given access to events in Amin's past with otherwise no documentation and to Amin's internal struggles coming of age as a gay man through all his turmoil. At the time of recording this episode, Flee had been nominated for a slew of festival awards, and has since set a record at the Academy Awards for its trio of nominations for Best Documentary Feature, Best International Feature, and Best Animated Feature. Join Kevin and Jake as we get into just why this film is so special! As a bonus, you can now stream Flee on Hulu! Our miniseries moves forward with the acid-tongued diva-worshipper Addison DeWitt, masterfully played by George Sanders in the classic All About Eve. CORRECTION: In the episode, we state that Flee is a Dutch film, but it is a Danish film. We hope our Danish audience is lenient with us!
