Filmmaker Emilija Gašić joins VIFF's Vanguard series programmer Sonja Baksa to discuss 78 Days, a found-footage film that won the Vanguard Award at VIFF 2024. Shot on hi-8 tapes in her native Serbia, the film follows three sisters documenting their lives during the NATO bombing of Yugoslavia in 1999. Inspired by her own childhood memories, Gašić's decision to use analog tape lent to the "docufiction" quality of the film.In this conversation, Sonja and Emilija unpack the film's unconventional process and the Vanguard series' focus on "films that are pushing the boundaries of cinema", and how Gašić's journey from Lord of the Rings fan to NYU Tisch grad shaped her voice as a director. This episode was recorded during the 2024 Vancouver International Film Festival. This week, we're breaking our hiatus to break from our format, as we are not breaking down a film this week so much as hyping one up, as we get ready for the movie event of the summer by over-analyzing the final trailer for Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning. If you're a long-time listener or even someone who's only heard a few episodes you probably know that the Mission: Impossible movies are a permanent hyper-fixation around here, so we had to get together to discuss a preview loaded wall-to-wall with That Guy character actors, including the return of our beloved boy Shea Whigham, and even that one guy from the first movie who had to go have diarrhea. Everyone is here! Plus: J Mo's got a theatrical field report having been out to the VIFF premiere of the pro wrestling biopic Queen of the Ring that included a live Q&A with the film's director and star, and as usual we catch up on what's been filling our Letterboxd. Other works discussed on this episode include Kimi, Rushmore, The Accountant, The Pitt, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Avatar: The Way of Water, Aquaman, Campfire Tales, Are You Afraid of the Dark?, The Twister: Caught in the Storm, Twisters, Tenet, Deja Vu, The Iron Claw, Flow, The Wild Robot, Rope, Stranger Than Fiction and Terminator: Salvation. Not sure when we'll back together again, but we can say when we do we will be discussing Warren Beatty's 1990 comic book detective noir Dick Tracy, a movie that is literally never available to stream and may never be despite being produced and distributed by Disney. We've also got while-they're-in-theatres episodes planned over the next month for both The Accountant 2 and Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning, so look forward to those, and until then, we'll see you at the movies!!
On this episode of the VIFF podcast, programmer Alan Franey sits down with Mark Levinson to talk about his film, The Universe in a Grain of Sand. Touching on trauma, abuse, and the artistic interpretation thereof, Adam talks about his experience directing opera and the controversies surrounding the original production. This episode was recorded during the 2023 Vancouver International Film Festival. In this episode we welcome filmmaker Kim Albright, director of With Love and a Major Organ, and producer Madeleine Davis in conversation with VIFF programmer Tom Charity.Struggling artist by night, virtual insurance broker by day, Anabel has a heart problem: it's just too big for this world. Rejected and derided by her more sophisticated “friends”, Anabel falls for George, a stranger with a penchant for reading yesterday's newspaper with all the bad news redacted. But George still lives with his overly protective mum, and both will take some persuading that Anabel is his heart's desire. Filmed right here in Vancouver, Kim Albright's directorial debut strikes a lo-(sci-)fi surrealist vibe vaguely reminiscent of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. It's whimsical, unpredictable, but more than anything it's true enough to hit close to home. This conversation was recorded as part of VIFF's Year Round programming.
In this episode we welcome Corey Payette, director of the movie musical Les Filles du Roi, in conversation with the film's editor Christian Díaz Durán.Adapted from Urban Ink's stage production, this locally-shot film screened at VIFF 2023. Since 2014, he has been the Artistic Director of Urban Ink, a position first held by Marie Clements, at one of Canada's most ambitious theatre companies. He is a member of the Mattagami First Nations, with French-Canadian and Irish ancestries. Les Filles du Roi is his first feature film. This conversation was recorded at VIFF Centre in March 2024.–––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––This podcast is brought to you by the Vancouver International Film Festival.Presented on the traditional and unceded territory of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and sel̓íl̓witulh (Tsleil-Waututh) nations. In this episode, Editor-in-Chief Alex Heeney and Executive Editor Orla Smith discuss the Japanese hidden gem My Small Land, the first feature film from Emma Kawawada. We fell in love with the film at the Berlinale earlier this year, and are excited that it's finally getting a Canadian release this week. My Small Land, is the story of a Kurdish teenage girl, Sarya (Lina Arashi) who is an immigrant in Japan. She grew up just outside of Tokyo and has no memories of her home, which was colonised Kurdish territory in Turkey. Sarya ends up in an impossible situation when her family loses their work visas, and travel permission, and she suddenly becomes responsible for her younger siblings with no way to earn money legally. My Small Land follows in the tradition of social realism, and the style of filmmaking owes much to Kore-eda's small scale character dramas. My Small Land will be screening at TIFF in Toronto from November 9 to 16 and in Charlottetown PEI until November 8. The film has also screened at VIFF in Vancouver and the Montreal Cinematheque. Watch for it on VOD soon if it's not coming to your city.

It is Monday. Again, here we are. This is Elliot lane. Welcome zingers to your first episode of the week of cannabis daily. Thanks to Asli and Aaron for making this happen on the backend and from. For the platform. This show brings your, you your daily dose of cannabis, insights and news on the industry and markets as a whole today, we're going to start with kind of an analyst takeover Monday, if you will. There's a ton of. Notes that have come out over the past few days on cannabis and cannabis related stocks. So let's start there and then we'll dive into a few other bits around the market, but Cantor, Fitz, Gerald, they released a couple of notes. But most recently a they keep their by rating on village farms. That's V F F. Today and they set a price target of $9 and 30 cents village farms has an analyst consensus of a strong buy rating with a price target consensus of just over $12, which if you break it down is around 139%.Upside from current levels. So there's a lot of potential, a lot of growth, potential, a lot of excitement around village farms because their cannabis side has been doing very well. AGP Alliance, global partners. They also maintain a buy rating with a price target of $17 on VFX. So overall they're not performing necessarily the greatest they're close to a 52 week low, but then again, a lot of these stocks follow them.Fundamentally. So if you're looking at stocks to based on performance, then Viff is definitely one to keep on your watch. Next up Piper Sandler remains neutral on Kronos group. That's C R O N on the NASDAQ and lowers their price target from $4 to $3. Dawson James maintains a buy rating on 22nd century. That is X I and sets a price target of $8 50 cents. The general feel for the stock of XX is a moderate box. And an eight $50, $8, 50 cents, average price target. And last but not least, before we dive into less technical side of this show, Cantor Fitzgerald reports on Friday that they feel curely will recover. They maintain their buyer rating with a price target of 15 and a half dollars. The consensus field here is a strong buy and just around the $13 40 cent average price. This is just over 130% upside from current levels for cure leaf. Next up per new cannabis ventures. If you don't follow the site, you should.Alan Broxton does a wonderful job at breaking down the financial side of cannabis as do we, of course. But we have great respect for Allen. He has some interesting points from leading companies, earning calls just two of them here, but two specifically large companies, Cura leaf, C U R. Stating to the illicit market activity, took a big hit out of their business in New York and New Jersey and green thumb industries.GTB I F criticizes, Illinois for failing to issue the social equity licenses and expand the number of stores. Ben Kogler. According to Alan Broxton plays his cards, decently close to his chest while clearly there's a little bit more. About issues and their MIS on the adjusted epidemic specifically next upgrading every state's marijuana program, something we can break down on the show together. It looks like to me, according to Americans for safe access, the best marijuana program out there is drum roll, please. The state of Maine. What that is what they say the next step after them is Illinois with a B minus. Ben Coler wants them to be the best. It seems there's a lot of CS especially in the markets that have been around for awhile, C plus, and California, C minus for both the state of Washington and Oregon.Lot of F's for those that don't have anything, including my home state of Kentucky, that's skew, a sad face emoji. And there's some DS overall nobody's doing particularly well, according to Americans for safe access. So get your butts in order to get your gears in shape over here. I totally messed up those phrases, but you all know what I mean?Apparently we're just not doing very well on rolling. Marijuana programs out according to Americans for safe access. Check that out. cannabis.net. I think the fresh toast covered it. I think benzinga.com/cannabis will also release that today. Few more bits of news here, we'll raise through sugar, bud. That's S B U D launches a new pre-roll product in Ontario, high tide, H I T I and on the NASDAQ, can't go a day without talking about them. They are subsidiary fab CBD launches, a subscribe and save program in the U S I would imagine sending them. For loyalty programs to flow from Canada to the U S they have a massive loyalty program in Canada. It looks like they're starting that, those activations in the U S. Madman M N F wins the case against their former CFO, which now has to pay over $600,000 in legal fees from a lawsuit that he did start and lose last but not least a F C G on the NASDAQ. This is AFC gamma, a leading Linder. In the space of cannabis expands their credit facilities with three already existing borrowers in their network. With that being said, if I'm looking at my watch list today, I think VFS got some votes of confidence. That's a win for me, for them. If I'm probably high tide, just in terms of general performance and AFCG as well. But for the long-term, this is probably a good time to check out. If I'm not going to lie, they are a major company that will bounce back almost guaranteed. So with that being said, have a wonderful Monday, go make some money in cannabis stocks. We will see you again tomorrow. Hey investors, thanks so much for tuning in to Benzing. As cannabis daily stock picks and news podcast everyday pre-market once again, this is not financial.
