CONNECTING CHOICES AND CONSEQUENCESRATED PG: Parental Guidance Needed - Part 2Springcreek Church | Senior Pastor Keith StewartFebruary 26, 2023Teaching responsibility is one of the most important jobs of a parent. It's what equips our child for life. Helping our children understand that they are in charge of the quality of their own life – that literally everything boils down to the quality of their choices – will make the difference between a child who thrives versus one who flounders. This message will help us avoid the pitfalls, assist us with practical suggestions, and show us how God does this with us. Whether you are in the thick of the parenting years, an empty nester, or without children, this message has something helpful for us all. DISCUSSION QUESTIONS1. One of the primary responsibilities of all parents is to teach our children about personal responsibility. This is best done by helping them make the connection between their choices and the consequences that follow. Today's message illustrated what that progression should look like by utilizing Dr. Sylvia Rimm's “V” of Love chart. When a child is young, they have fewer choices and freedom. As they mature and begin to understand the connection between choices and consequences, they are given more choices and freedom. Give some examples of what you believe are age-appropriate choices for toddlers, elementary, middle school and high school.2. There are ways in which a parent can sabotage this growth in their child and interfere in the learning of consequences. Pastor Keith offered three parenting styles as an example of problem parenting. Take some time to discuss the following examples. Specifically for each example;- Can you offer any examples of how you've seen these parenting styles in people you have known?- Were your parents anything like these parents?- Have you ever personally struggled with any of these areas? EXAMPLE #1 – RESCUERS - “I don't want to hurt my kids” EXAMPLE #2 - AVOIDERS - “If I ignore it, it'll go away”EXAMPLE #3 - OVERREACTORS – “Do this because I'm the parent”3. Have you ever known parents who use guilt, fear or shame as a way of getting conformity out of their kids? Why do parents do this? What is the downside? Why is this an example of a pyrrhic victory? 4. The price tag for learning about the negative consequences of irresponsibility is very affordable when we are young, loved, and protected in our homes. What are some ways a child might make a poor choice and suffer an affordable negative consequence that might hurt in the short term but not do any real lasting harm? 5. There is a big difference between discipline and punishment? What differences stood out to you and why? Were you disciplined or punished as a child? For those of you who were punished as children, how did that make you feel toward your parent(s)? How did it make you feel about yourself? If you could go back and speak to yourself during that experience, what would your adult self say to your child self? https://www.springcreekchurch.org/#realspringcreekchurch #parenting #parents #kids #choices #consequences

WHAT KIDS NEED MOST IN A PARENTRATED PG: Parental Guidance Needed - Part 1Springcreek Church | Senior Pastor Keith StewartFebruary 19, 2023Parents are often exhausted, stressed out, & under constant pressure. Clear up the confusion, relieve unrealistic expectations, & get focused on the essentials that enable our kids to become all that they were meant to be.DISCUSSION QUESTIONS1. According to the Britannica Dictionary, a stereotype is an often unfair and untrue belief that many people have about all people or things with a particular characteristic. What other stereotypes exist in our society in relation to moms and dads?2. Take some time as a group to discuss the modern phenomenon of the increasingly mobile and as a result isolated nuclear family. As parenting falls more exclusively and squarely on the shoulders of just the mom and dad (as opposed to the extended family), the pressure becomes unbearable, the knowledge and limited experience take a toll and parents feel completely alone against their challenges. What can parents do to mitigate those realities? Who else do you rely on when the going gets tough? What are the benefits of having others involved in helping to raise your children?3. Take some time as a group to discuss the developmental chart that Pastor Keith shared in the message. Ask yourself about the three primary developmental needs; nurture, affection, and attention and modeling – what was your experience in those areas growing up? Which did your parent(s) do particularly well? Were any of these diminished or not what you hoped they would be? How does that affect you today? Discuss your thoughts on parental absence as it relates to these developmental needs. 4. Pastor Keith discussed the importance of play as it relates to nurturing. Did your parents play with you? Did you play with your children? Why do you think play is regarded as frivolous? If your parents didn't play with you, how did they spend time with you? Kids spell love T-I-M-E. They both want and need to be with their parents. Some parents overestimate how much time they spend with their children. Realistically, how much time did your parents spend with you? How much time did you spend with your children? 5. We desperately need both affection and attention. How affectionate were your parents? How affectionate are you? According to Ross Campbell, who wrote the book, How to Really Love Your Child, “6-year-old boys receive 1/6th as much hugging and kissing as 6 year-old-girls.” He also discussed the truth that first-grade boys get into trouble 6x's more frequently than first-grade girls. Do you think there's a correlation between those two facts? Why aren't little boys treated with the same affection as little girls? Do you think this is a good thing or not?In terms of attention, our kids really do desire ours. In particular, they want parents who listen well. In fact, they will often seek out other adults in order to get an adult perspective on their problems. They just want someone who will listen as opposed to react to everything they're saying. Were your parent's good listeners? Are you a good listener? What are some good open-ended questions that lead to great conversations?6. There are three messages God spoke to His Son that serve as a great pattern for parenting today, I love you, I believe in you, and I'm proud of you. Talk about the importance of those messages and your personal experience with them in regard to your parents and parenting.Pastor Keith added one more message that God does not need to communicate but we most certainly do and that is “I am sorry.” Have you ever apologized to your kids? For what? How was that received? Were you ever apologized to by your parents? For what? What effect did that have on you?https://www.springcreekchurch.org/#realspringcreekchurch #parenting

Changing the narrative for women around beauty and aging is the mission behind ElaineWellness.com. Radiant beauty is an inside job and aging is a privilege. The diet and beauty industries have shamed women for long enough and Elaine believes there's a better way to talk about aging. She's created a company that offers high-quality products to help women look and feel their best from the inside out. Very few companies are speaking to women 40+ and Elaine is doing her part to fill that void by building a community of women to have conversations around what it means to age well. Muriel's Grimm #3: A family-friendly (we think!) retelling of a lesser known story from The Brothers Grimm, “A Tale About The Boy Who Went Forth to Know What Fear Was.” Rated PG-13 (we think?). No bad language, but it's scary and has some violence. Proceed with caution. Happy Halloween! Muriel brings her signature true-crime podcasting style to the world of old-school fairytales in an attempt to make something family-friendly… and scary… and completely crazy. And pretty dang funny. For this Halloween series, Muriel found three of the most bizarre, terrifying stories from “The Complete Fairy Tales of The Brothers Grimm” translated by Jack Zipes in 1987. Then she tells the stories to Nick, who then goes and adds in the music and sound effects. Please check out all three episodes of Muriel's Grimm - available now wherever you're listening to this one.
