We present our reviews of Nimona the comic and the movie!Nimona is a science fantasy graphic novel by American cartoonist ND Stevenson. The story follows the title character, a shapeshifter who joins the disgraced knight Ballister Blackheart in his plans to destroy the over-controlling Institute. Blackheart's intent to operate under his code of ethics contrasts with Nimona's natural impulsivity.Stevenson began working on Nimona while attending the Maryland Institute College of Art, revisiting a character he had created in high school. Stevenson published Nimona as a webcomic from 2012 through 2014, initially through Tumblr, developing the story and the art style as time progressed. The finished work ultimately doubled as his senior thesis. After an agent reached out to Stevenson, HarperCollins released Nimona in print form in 2015. It has been translated into at least 16 other languages and adapted into an audiobook.Nimona's accolades include an Eisner Award, a Cybils Award, and a Cartoonist Studio Prize. Reviews and academic analyses have highlighted themes of queerness and fluidity of identity and how they oppose and subvert traditional controlling institutions and exclusionary systems.Nimona is a 2023 American animated science fantasy action-adventure film directed by Nick Bruno and Troy Quane from a screenplay by Robert L. Baird and Lloyd Taylor, based on the 2015 graphic novel of the same name by ND Stevenson. Set in a medieval-futuristic kingdom, the film features the voices of Chloë Grace Moretz as the eponymous shapeshifting character and Riz Ahmed as her boss and former knight Ballister, with Eugene Lee Yang and Frances Conroy voicing supporting roles.Originally a production of Blue Sky Studios, it was set to be directed by Patrick Osborne, with an initial release date of 2020. Following the Walt Disney Company's acquisition of 21st Century Fox, the parent company of Blue Sky, it was delayed multiple times before being canceled due to Blue Sky's closure in April 2021. However, Annapurna Pictures revived the project the following year, with Bruno and Quane announced as directors, DNEG Animation providing animation, and Netflix acquiring worldwide distribution. Christophe Beck was hired to compose the film's rock-inspired score.Nimona had its world premiere at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival on June 14, 2023, was released in select cinemas on June 23, and made its streaming debut on June 30. The film received critical acclaim and was nominated for Best Animated Feature at the Critics' Choice, Annie Awards and Academy Awards.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsohttps://www.teepublic.com/user/radulich-in-broadcasting-networkFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76RIBN Album Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/91d704c9-d1ea-45a0-9ffe-5069497bad59

Tune in as Shawn Murphy (Men Who Like Men Who Like Movies!) hops back into his guest seat for a discussion on Nightcrawler, the 2014 neo-noir crime thriller about a stringer who roams Los Angeles after nightfall with a camcorder in hand and twists the city into his own morbid landscape of news fodder. The ridiculousness of the Oscars snubbing Jake Gyllenhaal for this career-defining performance, appreciation for nepo babies who acknowledge their privilege, the importance of knowing how to haggle, and the effectively bizarre score comprise some of the topics for this episode.Directed by Dan Gilroy, Nightcrawler stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Rene Russo, Riz Ahmed, Bill Paxton, Kevin Rahm, Michael Hyatt, Price Carson, Ann Cusack, Carolyn Gilroy, Marco Rodriguez, and Michael Papajohn.Spoilers start at 37:15Create your podcast today! #madeonzencastrHere's how you can learn more about Palestine and IsraelHere's how you can keep up-to-date on this genocideHere's how you can send eSIM cards to Palestinians in order to help them stay connected onlineGood Word:• Shawn: Together, Weapons, and Alien: Earth• Arthur: Only Lovers Left AliveReach out at email2centscritic@yahoo.com if you want to recommend things to watch and read, share anecdotes, or just say hello!Be sure to subscribe, rate, and review on iTunes or any of your preferred podcasting platforms!Follow Arthur on Twitter, Goodpods, StoryGraph, Letterboxd, and TikTok: @arthur_ant18Follow Arthur on Bluesky: @arthur-ant18Follow the podcast on Twitter: @two_centscriticFollow the podcast on Instagram: @twocentscriticpodFollow Arthur on GoodreadsCheck out 2 Cents Critic Linktree

It's time to give the people want they want: reviews! After three weeks of festivities (Brekky live with Pam Boland at Local & Aesthetic, Movie Squad's 500th Live at Luna spectacular, and the ‘Hot Takes' Radiothon special), the Blockbuster Babes are back in the studio with a backlog of movies to cover. First up, Tristan Fidler reviews Ari Aster's latest divisive effort, Eddington, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Pedro Pascal as competing, COVID-era mayoral candidates. Then, Simon Miraudo leads a discussion of The Ballad of Wallis Island, an ‘ambient comedy' about a wealthy, Welsh-island-dwelling eccentric (Tim Key) who reunites his favourite singers (played by Tom Basden and Carey Mulligan) for a private concert. And then, in an EXPLOSIVE pod-exclusive chat, Tristan and Simon review the very silly legacy-quel The Naked Gun, which sees Liam Neeson step into the shoes of Leslie Nielsen, and Relay, a tense espionage thriller starring Riz Ahmed, Lily James and Sam Worthington. All of these are now showing in Australian cinemas! PLUS, one extra Hot Take submitted by a subscriber: Which films have Simon and Tristan butted heads over the most? Remember, Radiothon runs until 30 September, so show us how RTRFM and Movie Squad are More Than Radio to you by becoming a subscriber this year at support.rtrfm.com.au. There have been a number of big summer movies like "F1: The Movie," "Superman" and "Jurrassic World: Rebirth." But these popcorn movies are not likely destined for big awards. Studios like to hold back the Oscar contenders for the fall, so in this week's episode we dive into which movies to watch for this fall and into the winter. You can also review a full list of notable films below. August releases “Honey Don’t!” – Ethan Coen continues his Margaret Qualley-a-thon with this comedy about a private investigator who looks into a series of deaths tied to a church. Aubrey Plaza, Chris Evans co-star. “Splitsville” – Divorce makes strange bedfellows, particularly when the ex discovers his best friends have an open marriage. Dakota Johnson, Kyle Marvin star. “Eden” – Looking for a better life, a group of people head to the Galapagos and realize what they’re up against. Jude Law and Ana de Armas star in this based-in-fact drama directed by Ron Howard. “Relay” – Payoffs between corporations brings a broker into the line of fire. Riz Ahmed, Lily James and Sam Worthington star. “Hollywood Grit” – A private investigator has to find out what happened to his daughter. Tyrese, Max Martini star. “Lurker” – How strange is the world of stardom? A worker finds out as he gets closer to a music star. Alex Russell wrote and directed this drama starring Theodore Pellerin and Archie Madekwe. “The Thursday Murder Club” – Friends in a retirement home solve mysteries. Pierce Brosnan, Helen Mirren, Ben Kingsley are in the home. “The Roses” – An updated look at “War of the Roses” lets Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman square off. Jay Roach directs. “Caught Stealing” – Austin Butler gets the Darren Aronofsky treatment as a baseball player caught in the underbelly of New York City. Bad Bunny is along for the ride. “The Toxic Avenger”—When a janitor is the victim of a toxic accident, a new crimefighter emerges. Peter Dinklage, Jacob Tremblay and Taylour Paige star. “Jaws” – The first summer blockbuster returns to the big screen after months on television. Now, you can see what audiences were scared of in 1975. “Love, Brooklyn” – Friends navigate the pitfalls of life in Brooklyn. September releases “Megadoc” – Mike Figgis looks at the making of Francis Ford Coppola’s “Megalopolis.” “The Conjuring: Last Rites” – Those creepy paranormal investigators say they’re taking on one last case (sure) to settle their own lives. Patric Wilson and Vera Farmiga return. “The Threesome” – A threesome leads to problems, particularly since life’s not always fantasies. Zoey Deutch and Jonah Hauer-King star. “Twinless” – Two men bond in a support group. Dylan O’Brien, Lauren Graham and Arkira Chantaratananond star. “Hamilton” – Celebrating its “ten-cennial,” the Broadway hit brings its performance capture version (which ran on Disney+) to the big screen. Updates about the performers make this more than a night out. “The Baltimorons” – Sobriety leads to a dental emergency which leads to a romance with the dentist. Jay Duplass directs; Michael Strassner co-writes and stars. “The Long Walk” —You thought the Hunger Games were bad, how about this: Teenage boys compete in a walking contest. If they don’t keep up, they’re shot. Based on a Stephen King story, it’s one of the year’s most harrowing. “Spinal Tap II: The End Continues” – Those Smell the Glove guys reunite after a 15-year hiatus for one last concert. Rob Reiner directs; the original actors return. “Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale” – The Crawleys face scandal, financial ruin and social disgrace. To get out of it, they look to a younger generation. Expect all but Maggie Smith to be back. “The History of Sound” – Paul Mescal and Josh O’Connor embark on a World War I project that brings them close to their country and each other. “Code 3” – One last shift for a paramedic who has to train his replacement. What could go wrong? Rainn Wilson, Lil Rel Howery star. “Him” – What a guy won’t do to be a football star. Here, one goes to a compound where anything can happen. Tyriq Withers, Marlon Wayans and Julia Fox star. “American Sweatshop – Yup, it’s the world of social media. An insider discovers just how dark the world is (like we didn’t know). “A Big Bold Beautiful Journey” – Colin Farrell and Margot Robbie bond in a unique journey (which, of course, says nothing but suggests there’s more to this than two big stars). “The Summer Book” – A girl and her grandmother become closer in Finland. Emily Matthews and Glenn Close star. (Could this be the one that finally wins Close an Oscar?) “Xeno” – Ready for another E.T.? This one finds a teenager relating to the alien. Josh Cooke, Lulu Wilson star. “Waltzing with Brando” – When Marlon Brando wants an ecologically perfect retreat in Tahiti, he calls on a Los Angeles architect. Tia Carrere, Richard Dreyfuss and Jon Heder star. “Eleanor the Great” – Scarlett Johansson directs June Squibb in this drama about a 94-year-old who has plenty of stories to tell. “One Battle After Another” – Leonardo DiCaprio stars in this dark comedy about a group of revolutionaries reuniting to save one of their group’s daughter. Paul Thomas Anderson directs; Benicio Del Toro (who starred in a Wes Anderson film earlier this year) and Sean Penn co-star. October releases “The Smashing Machine” – Dwayne Johnson tries his hand at mixed-martial arts as UFC champion Mark Kerr. The makeup may be a stretch, but Benny Safdie directs, Emily Blunt disappears in an unlikely role. “Tron: Ares” – Jared Leto gets to run the race. Jeff Bridges is here, too, but this is about a new program (Ares) that’s about to embark on a dangerous mission. “Roofman” – A robber evades authorities by hanging out in a toy store. Channing Tatum plays the thief, Peter Dinklage and Kirsten Dunst swirl around him. “Anemone” – Daniel Day-Lewis comes out of retirement for this film directed by his son, Ronan. The plot? Good question, but it will have that DD-L prestige. “Kiss of the Spider Woman” – Jennifer Lopez stars in the Tony winner fans have been asking for. The big question: Were they looking for Lopez to star in it? Bill Conden directs. “If I Had Legs, I’d Kick You” – Rose Byrne gets the Oscar buzz as a woman trying to juggle multiple traumas, including a sick child and an absent husband. “Soul on Fire” – This is the story of a St. Louis native who survived burns which covered his body. Joel Courtney plays John O’Leary. William H. Macy and John Corbett co-star. “Good Fortune” – An angel meddles in the lives of a venture capitalist and a gig worker. Seth Rogen, Azizi Ansari and Keke Palmer star in this comedy written and directed by Ansari. Black Phone 2 – More trouble ensues when the phone rings. Sequel to a better-than-average horror film. “After the Hunt” – Julia Roberts plays a college professor who wonders what could happen when a student levels an accusation against a colleague. Ayo Edebiri co-stars. The Mastermind – A family man leads a double life in the 1970s. Josh O’Connor and Alana Haim star. “Pets on a Train” – Animated animals get caught up in a train heist. Hedda” – “Hedda Gabler” gets the big-screen treatment with Tessa Thompson in the title role. Blue Moon – The life of Lorenz Hart is told by Richard Linklater with Ethan Hawke as Hart. Andrew Scott plays Richard Rodgers. “Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere” -- Bruce Springsteen gets the Bob Dylan treatment with Jeremy Allen White in the title role. This, however, only covers the creation of the “Nebraska” album. “Regretting You” – Family issues emerge after the death of a husband and father. Based on Colleen Hoover’s best-seller, it stars Allison Williams and Mckenna Grace. “The Watchers” – M. Night Shayamalan’s daughter Ishana makes her directorial debut with this thriller about an artist who gets trapped in an Irish forest. “Anniversary” – A good cast (Diane Lane, Kyle Chandler, Zoey Deutch) in a thriller directed by Polish filmmaker Jan Komasa. “Bugonia” – Emma Stone continues her run with Yorgos Lanthimos. The film is a remake of a South Korean effort about two men kidnapping an executive, convinced she’s an alien bent on destroying Earth. “Nouvelle Vague” – Richard Linklater has another entry this year. This one’s a look at Jean-Luc Godard and actress Jean Seberg. Guillaume Marbeck and Zoey Deutch start. November releases When We Pray – Jamie Foxx directs the story of brothers who become pastors at divergent churches. Predator: Badlands – While “Alien: Earth” takes over TV screens, the “other” scary creature takes on a remote planet. Indecipherable – A boy, home alone, gets shaken by the things that go bump in the night. Wicked: For Good – At long last, we find out what happened to Glinda and Elphaba. Expect at least one new song and bigger roles for the men in their lives. No place like home? That’s included, too. Cynthia Orivo and Ariana Grande could double up on the Oscar nominations. Rental Family – Oscar winner Brendan Fraser plays an American actor who plays roles in other people’s lives. STZ – Zombies result when a trio of scientists launch a bio-attack on a bus filled with women. (No kidding.) Zootopia 2 – Residents of Zootopia return for more adventure and product placement. Every once in a while, a thriller comes along that feels both fun and grounded — that was my experience with Relay. Directed by David Mackenzie (of Hell or High Water fame) and starring Riz Ahmed, Lily James, and Sam Worthington, this cat-and-mouse story dives into the shadowy world of whistleblowers and corporate cover-ups.It's a world I don't know personally, but the film felt real enough to pull me in. What stood out most is how the characters constantly forced each other to step up their game — no “stupid” decisions that take you out of the story, just a sharp escalation that kept me engaged. While the final twist didn't feel fully developed, it still delivered a punch and reminded me that sometimes a movie can be both imperfect and incredibly fun.If you're into gritty thrillers with strong performances and clever dynamics, Relay is well worth your time.

First Look, Final Word

Pete and Trevor dive into one of the buzziest films of 2025: Relay, the stylish new crime thriller from David Mackenzie (Hell or High Water), starring Riz Ahmed, Lily James, Sam Worthington, and Ariyon Bakare. We're also pushing forward with Project Conjuring, our deep dive through every film in the Conjuring universe. This week we're covering The Nun (2018), Corin Hardy's gothic horror that expands the mythology of Valak. A fun show this week on BEHIND THE LENS as I get to take a look at two new films that just opened in theatres on Friday and speak with three filmmakers whom I've spoken with in the past, all of whose work I admire, respect, and in the case of one director, can't get enough of. I'm talking about the wonderful filmmaking team of MICHAEL ANGELO COVINO and KYLE MARVIN and their hilarious new non-rom com rom com, SPLITSVILLE, along with one of my fave filmmakers and the man who I believe helped put Taylor Sheridan on the map as a writer with the fabulous "Hell or High Water", director DAVID MACKENZIE and his new thriller RELAY. So let's kick things off with the comedy stylings of Michael Angelo Covino and Kyle Marvin and SPLITSVILLE. It's a story of two couples. Ashley and Carey. And Julie and Paul. All best friends. And all with personalities as different as night and day. But while Ashley and Carey are on a road trip, driving down a multi-lane highway, out of the blue and left field Ashley asks Carey for a divorce. Let the hilarity and hijinks begin! Good-natured and kind of wimpy, Carey runs to besties Julie and Paul for support and a place to crash while he figures out what to do. It's then that he finds out their secret to their happy marriage. It's an open marriage. Shocked and curious, things take a left turn with Carey crossing the line, resulting in chaotic madness and mayhem for all concerned. So now, let's switch gears and ratchet up the thrills and tension with RELAY and director DAVID MACKENZIE. I have been champing at the bit, sitting on this interview with David since early June, as the publicity team asked me to hold it until the film's release. Now the release has arrived, and I can share this interview with all of you. RELAY is a tense, New York thriller which has a timelessness to it while echoing the great paranoid thrillers of the 70s. In RELAY, Riz Ahmed plays Ash, a world-class quot;fixerquot; who specializes in brokering lucrative payoffs between corrupt corporations and the individuals who threaten their ruin. He keeps his identity a secret through meticulous planning and always follows an exacting set of rules. But when a message arrives one day from a potential client named Sarah (Lily James) needing his protection just to stay alive, the rules quickly start to change. RELAY is like a puzzle, with each production element integrating or interlocking with another. It's always fascinating to get inside David's mind and understand his vision, and what a vision this is with RELAY. So take a listen as director DAVID MACKENZIE talks the taut and tense paranoid thriller RELAY. http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com

When a new message arrives from a potential client (Lily James) needing his protection to stay alive, the rules quickly start to change. The film also stars Sam Worthington, Willa Fitzgerald, Matthew Maher, and more. For Ahmed, the attraction was as much about who he was working with as the story itself. “The thing that's always one of the most important things is your director,” he said. “You're going to be in their hands. You've got to kind of vibe with them. So David was a big pull. And then it's also who else are you going to be doing this with? When I heard it was Lily, I was absolutely thrilled.”

It tells what happens when all but one child from the same class mysteriously vanish on the same night at exactly the same time, a community is left questioning who or what is behind their disappearance. It's got Julia Garner and Josh Brolin. Both Bill Bregoli and Bill McCuddy have different opinions on it. Then there's the long awaited (for some people anyway) sequel "Happy Gilmore2" which NeilRosen will fill us  in on. We also have the thriller "Relay" starring Lily James and Riz Ahmed in which a broker of lucrative payoffs between corrupt corporations and the individuals who threaten them breaks his own rules when a new client seeks his protection to stay alive. For documentary fans there's "Sunday Best: The Untold Story of Ed Sullivan" which tells how Ed Sullivan broke barriers by booking Black artists on his Sunday night variety show. One of the most innovative artists of his generation, Hamad Butt was a pioneer of intermedia art, bringing art into conversation with science, whilst also referencing his Queer and diasporic experiences. He offered a nuanced artistic response to the AIDS crisis in the UK, taking a conceptual rather than activist approach.Butt's conceptually and technically ambitious works seamlessly interweave popular culture, science, alchemy, science fiction, and social and cultural concerns, as forms that are simultaneously poetic and provocative. They imagine sex and desire in a time of ‘plague' as seductive yet frightening, intimate yet isolating, compelling yet dangerous – literally, in some cases, threatening to kill or injure.Born in Lahore, Pakistan, and raised in East London, Butt was British South Asian, Muslim by upbringing, and Queer. A contemporary of the Young British Artists, and their peer at Goldsmiths' College, London, Butt was described by art critics as epitomising the new ‘hazardism' in art of the 1990s, as his works often imply physical risk or endangerment.Follow: @WhitechapelGallery and @WePresent and check out WePresent today to see a series of never-before-seen artworks by Hamad, generously shared by Jamal. This episode is brought to you by our friends at WePresent, the Academy Award winningarts platform of WeTransfer. From Oscar-winning director Wes Anderson (The Grand Budapest Hotel, Rushmore, The Royal Tannenbaums) comes his latest uniquely framed and acted adventure about a wealthy businessman (Oscar-Winner Benicio Del Toro) who's on a dangerous mission to not only preserve his wealth but also to possibly reconcile with his daughter played by newcomer Mia Threapleton.  Alongside his latest assistant (and insect expert) Bjorn (Michael Cera), they travel around the world encountering a genuinely unique assortment of rival businessmen and/or potential assassins played by an All-Star cast including Tom Hanks, Rupert Friend, Scarlett Johannsen, Riz Ahmed, Bryan Cranston, Jeffrey Wright, and Benedict Cumberbatch.  And what results is a colorful, quirky, and symettrical adventure which could only come from the mind of Wes Anderson.Host & Editor: Geoff GershonEditor: Ella GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a texthttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

Send us a textOn our 107th podcast, we here at the Triple FFF thought we'd try to once again attempt relevance and discuss a current big release, this time Wes Anderson's 2025 father-daughter high stakes business and espionage caper The Phoenician Scheme starring Benicio Del Toro, Mia Threapleton, Michael Cera, Tom Hanks, Bryan Cranston, Riz Ahmed, Scarlet Johansson, Mathieu Amalric, Jeffrey Wright, Rupert Friend and Benedict Cumberbatch. As well as Mr. Anderson's troupe of good-natured bit players and walk ons which includes Bill Murray, F. Murray Abraham, Wilem Dafoe and now Charlotte Gainsbourg.  I'm your host Gino Caputi and my guests this week are the always dependable show regulars Joe Field, David Johnson DMD and Gordon Alex RobertsonThe Phoenician Scheme's plot unfolds as follows: After surviving yet another assassination attempt, this time with a glimpse of the afterlife, wealthy arms dealer and industrialist Anatole Zsa-Zsa Korda realizes his days are numbered and possibly without purpose. Hoping to reconnect with his estranged daughter Liesl—now on the verge of taking her final vows as a Catholic nun—he names her the sole heir to his estate. In exchange for long-withheld truths about her mother's murder, Korda convinces Liesl to accompany him on a whirlwind journey to secure funding from several colorfully shady investors for his grand, multi-layered Phoenician Scheme—plans for which are ingeniously stored in a series of shoeboxes.Where does this film rank within Wes Anderson's collection of stories about larger-than-life, big talking fathers of dubious emotional and financial sincerity?  Find out!Watch the video podcast on Youtube:https://youtu.be/QVYj2zTif5o

Hello everyone and welcome back to another review here on MOVIE Morning. Wes Anderson's latest film - The Phoenician Scheme - hit UK cinemas this past weekend and will have a slow international rollout over the next month or so. I am a bit of a Wes Anderson noob. I watched Fantastic Mr. Fox obsessively when I was younger and have seen The Grand Budapest Hotel but other than that, I don't have an exact recollection of whether I've seen any of his other movies. Because of the early release here, I thought I'd give The Phoenician Scheme a shot, especially because Anderson has such a passionate following and the plot description seemed interesting to me. Is it worth seeing at the cinema? So - NEEDLESS TO SAY though I'll say it anyway - that's a whole ten years of life and career. Whether that time has slipped past with the click of fingers or you've felt every single moment of it, this is a wonderful chance to view that snapshot back then. Riz's career and life are immensely inspirational whether you are involved in acting or music, or indeed if you've listened to this episode before. There is so much in this episode that still resonates (and will continue to), and so much that you can still glean from the wisdom of Riz. It's also amazing how you can listen and kind of verify everything that he had in mind back then against what later came into being, including an incredible lineup of film roles and production credits.PIP'S PATREON PAGE if you're of a supporting natureINSTAGRAMALL LINKS HEREPIP TWITCH • (music stuff)PIP INSTAGRAMSPEECH DEVELOPMENT WEBSTOREPIP TWITTERPIP IMDBPOD BIBLE Hosted on Acast.
