Never Did It: A podcast for folks who like movies but haven't seen them all yet. This week, Brad Garoon and Jake Ziegler pop back a couple of years to catch up on a pair of movies missed in 2021. Jake starts by recommending Flee, Jonas Poher Rasmussen's animated documentary, which broke an Academy Award record by being nominated in the Best Documentary Feature, Best Animated Feature, and Best International Feature categories. Jake and Brad examine the effectiveness of animated documentaries, the value of watching an animated film in its language of origin, and the power of this harrowing story. Brad then assigns Jake the so-called Snyder Cut, a four-hour edit of 2017's The Justice League by its original director, Zack Snyder. Brad and Jake talk about the state of superhero films, Snyder's career and apparent interests, the value of overlong movies, and the merits of allowing creatives to fully realize their projects whether the outcome is enjoyable or not.

The acclaimed animated documentary Flee (Jonas Poher Rasmussen, 2021), which tells the story of Amin Nawabi and his journey from from Afghanistan to Denmark as a refugee, is the subject of Episode 103 of the podcast that reflects on the shared ability of animation, fantasy and the documentary format to ‘reveal.' Joining Chris and Alex for this instalment is Dr. Cristina Formenti, Assistant Professor in Film Studies at the University of Udine in Italy, and author of a number of books on animation and documentary, including Il mockumentary: la fiction si maschera da documentario (2013), and her latest book The Classical Animated Documentary and Its Contemporary Evolution (2022). Cristina is also the editor of the volumes Mariangela Melato tra cinema, teatro e televisione (2016) and Valentina Cortese: un'attrice intermediale (2019), while her work has appeared in various national and international journals, such as Studies in Documentary Film, Alphaville, and Horror Studies. She is currently the co-editor of the journal Animation Studies and serves on the Board of the Society for Animation Studies. Listen as they discuss the value of animated reconstruction, fictionalisation, and the authenticating use of live-action footage within Flee's predominantly animated aesthetic style that potentially ‘corrects' its cartoonal qualities; the role of memory and the subjectivity of experience; connections between imagination, emotion and trauma; shifts in the animated style of Jonas Poher Rasmussen's film between raw nightmarish impressionism and heightened visual detail; the ‘fable' and ‘sober' as useful ways to categorise the historical trajectory and stylistic approaches of the animated documentary; the experiential effects of subjective narration and the film's intimate interview style, and what happens when vocal recordings in the documentary have to be falsified; and how Flee offers a narrative of reconciliation that mirrors animation's own creative combination with certain recognisable documentary conventions. **Fantasy/Animation theme tune composed by Francisca Araujo**

Hvad lærer man?

Nominated for three Academy Awards®, Flee tells the extraordinary true story of a man, Amin, on the verge of marriage which compels him to reveal his hidden past for the first time. Filmmaker Jonas Poher Rasmussen talks to Write On about the process behind making the documentary/animated feature: “It is about finding out when we go into the memories, which ones do you really want to see. Which one of those are kind of scenic? And when is it more about the emotion? It's really about trying to show as much as you can instead of just telling it.”   Jonas goes on to give advice to not only other creatives but also himself: “I would definitely say that I should trust my voice more. Not try to look too much at what other people do, but really trust what I have inside. And then just to surround yourself with people that could challenge you in a good way.”   Don't forget to subscribe to the Write On Podcast on iTunes!   Now available on Google Podcasts!

This week on the Film at Lincoln Center podcast, we're featuring a programmer's preview of our Jonas Mekas Retrospective with FLC Jr. Programmer Dan Sullivan, followed by a Q&A from the 59th New York Film Festival with Flee director Jonas Poher Rasmussen, moderated by NYFF Director Eugene Hernandez. Few if any figures in the history of New York City film culture have left as large a mark as that of the Lithuanian filmmaker, critic, and poet Jonas Mekas. Rising to notoriety in the 1950s and '60s as a champion of and mouthpiece for the New American Cinema, he founded and presided over such stalwart fixtures of the underground and avant-garde film scenes as Film Culture magazine, the Filmmakers' Cinematheque, the Film-Makers' Cooperative, and Anthology Film Archives. But he was also one of the 20th century's most vital film artists, a master cine-diarist and something like a present-tense historian who documented the particulars of emigrant life in New York City. Featuring 16mm screenings, our Jonas Mekas Retrospective takes place from February 17th to 23rd.  In the Academy Award-nominated Flee, Amin's life has been defined by escape from a young age. Forced to leave his home country of Afghanistan with his mother and siblings after the U.S.-supported mujahideen toppled the government, Amin relocated to Russia as an adolescent, only to take part in a dangerous migration to Western Europe as a teenager to break away from the harsh conditions of post-Soviet living. Now that Amin is planning to marry a man he met in his new homeland, Denmark, he begins to look back over his life, opening up about his past, his trauma, the truth about his family, and his acceptance of his own sexuality. Using animation as both an aesthetic choice and an ethical necessity (to hide Amin's true identity), Jonas Poher Rasmussen's animated documentary is an illuminating and heartrending true story about the importance of personal freedom in all its meanings. Flee, an NYFF59 selection is now streaming.

This week Flee made history, becoming the first film to receive Oscar nominations for Best International Feature Film, Best Animated Film and Best Documentary. Flee tells the story of a man named Amin as he grapples with a painful secret he has kept hidden for 20 years, one that threatens to derail the life he has built for himself and his soon to be husband. Recounted mostly through animation to director, and close friend, Jonas, he tells for the first time the story of his extraordinary journey as a child refugee from Afghanistan to modern Denmark.Having made a name for himself through documentary radio and live action storytelling, Flee marks an ambitious and fruitful creative leap for Jonas, working in animation for the first time. Nikolaj Coster Waldau (who listeners will remember as Jaime Lannister in Game of Thrones), serves as an executive producer on the film and in this podcast they get into just what makes Flee so special, as well as their own journeys through film, including why keeping secrets is so important for acting, and why one of Jonas's best reviews came from two strangers sharing a beer. The BIFA Podcast is a Little Dot Studios production for BIFAThe show is hosted by Jake CunninghamIt's produced by Ellie Aitken, Jake Cunningham and Harold McShielAnd it's edited by Content is Queen See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Almost daily, the news media report on a new refugee crisis or a tragic border crossing attempted by those fleeing desperate circumstances in their home countries for the promise of a better life elsewhere. Danish filmmaker Jonas Poher Rasmussen takes the measure of one such story in his remarkable new documentary “Flee”, which gives a blow-by-blow, first-hand account of a young Afghan refugee named Amin who faces a perilous journey before finally making it safely to Denmark. Jonas and Amin became friends in high school, but it was not until years later that Jonas had even the slightest idea of all that had happened to Amin and his family. Why did Amin finally decide to tell his story? How did Jonas respect Amin's desire to stay anonymous, while at the same time portraying his story not only accurately and completely, but also visually? How did a filmmaker who started out with an idea for a short film, eventually take on an incredibly ambitious, multi-layered animated feature? Recently, Mike and Ken had the opportunity to ask Jonas about his special relationship with Amin and delve into Jonas' own creative odyssey. “Flee” captured the 2021 Sundance Grand Jury Prize and is now being heralded as a serious contender for this year's Oscar for Best Documentary Feature. Bye Bye Bibi.
