Reviewing All About Eve – with Professor Andrew BernsteinIn this episode of The Rational Egoist, Michael Liebowitz is joined by Professor Andrew Bernstein, Objectivist philosopher and author of Red Meat Village, to review the classic film All About Eve. Together, they explore the movie's themes of ambition, envy, integrity, and betrayal through a philosophical lens. Bernstein offers his perspective on how the film reflects deeper moral and psychological truths, and why it remains relevant today. This episode combines art and philosophy for a compelling look at one of Hollywood's most iconic dramas.Michael Leibowitz, host of The Rational Egoist podcast, is a philosopher and political activist who draws inspiration from Ayn Rand's philosophy, advocating for reason, rational self-interest, and individualism. I had been really looking forward to talking to Julian Ovenden but the conversation I ended up having with him was extraordinary and unexpected. Not only is he a talented actor appearing in some of our best loved TV shows and theatre productions: Downton Abbey, Bridgerton, Foyle's War, My Night with Reg, All About Eve to name but a handful, he is also a hugely talented singer whose concerts, albums and worldwide performances have touched the hearts of many. He is a winning combination of self-deprecating, funny, and honest and he generously shared some of the best and worst periods of his life. At times hilarious, at others heartbreaking and at all times fascinating, this is an important, entertaining and ultimately uplifting conversation. I feel honoured have been part of it and to be able to share it with you. Related Links Follow Julian Ovenden Julian Ovenden - YouTube

1950 was a year in which legendary classics like All About Eve and Sunset Blvd were released, but one of their competitors for the Best Picture Oscar was Vincente Minnelli's light comedy...which is itself a low-key classic. Father Of The Bride is well-written and it has more laughs than most movies that came out in that era, largely because Spencer Tracy knew how to be funny in a dignified way. He's nearly at his best in this as a successful lawyer...and he's also Elizabeth Taylor's dad. He's self-absorbed and unable to accept that his daughter has grown up & ready to get married, but he's lovable all the same. Kudos to Joan Bennett too as the MOTHER Of The Bride. Father Of The Bride may be fluffy, but it packs a bit of a melancholy punch, especially if you happen to be middle-aged like we are. Mankiewicz's All About Eve (1950). From the zippy, witty, infinitely quotable dialogue to the brilliant performances (minus one?) to its nuanced and edgy discussions of women's oppression and queerness, All About Eve is a must-watch.

EPISODE 60 - "THELMA RITTER: CLASSIC CINEMA STAR OF THE MONTH" - 11/04/2024 There's a scene in the classic 1950 film All About Eve where Eve Harrington (ANNE BAXTER), a star-struck fan who has infiltrated the life of Broadway star Margo Channing (BETTE DAVIS), is telling the tragic story of her past to Margo and her friends. While Margo and company are drawn into the sad circumstances of Eve's life, Margo's acerbic dresser Birdie, played to perfection by the great THELMA RITTER, is not buying her sob story. After Eve finishes, Birdie mutters, "What a story! Everything but the bloodhounds snappin' at her rear end." This is probably the moment I fell in love with Ritter. With her heavy New York accent, diminutive size, working-class charm, and sarcastic zingers, she made a career of stealing scenes from big stars and making the most of her time on screen. She played characters wiser than most, and her characters certainly didn't suffer fools gladly. She is a cinematic treasure, and we celebrate her as our Star of the Month. This episode is packed with insights into the challenges of revisiting older films, comparing classic storytelling with modern standards, and appreciating the intricate craftsmanship that brought these stories to life. We'll dissect the eclectic mix of genres that shaped 1950's film landscape, from the sci-fi beginnings of "Destination Moon," supported by groundbreaking visual effects and a surprisingly educational Woody Woodpecker cartoon, to the lavish sets of "Sunset Boulevard" and "All About Eve," both hailed for their timeless production design. We'll also discuss memorable moments and surprising details, such as a balcony unnoticed in multiple viewings and a comedic character's impact on a serious plot. Give online therapy a try at betterhelp.com/BENEATH and get on your way to being your best self.” ** The 1950s was a real transitional decade for classic films. As we got further away from WW2, and the Cold War began to rise up prominently, there was a cynicism across the land that influenced the content of many Hollywood movies. Films took on a grittier, more realistic feel, and the subject matters were darker and more controversial. The parallels between the two stories highlight themes of ambition, manipulation, and the ruthless pursuit of fame. All About Eve and All About Mariah: A Comparative Analysis"All About Mariah" is a clear reference to "All About Eve," the classic 1950s film directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz for 20th Century Fox. In the movie, a young Eve Harrington, played by Anne Baxter, cozies up to Bette Davis' aging Margo Channing, only to shoot herself to superstardom. Harrington grows close to Channing, adopts some of her mannerisms, and becomes a fixture in her life. When Harrington achieves success, she leaves the aging Broadway star in the dust as she ascends to the award-winning spotlight.ComparisonsIntroduction to the Protagonist All About EveAspiring actress Eve Harrington enters the life of established theater actress Margo Channing via Margo's close friend, Karen Richards. All About MariahMariah May enters Toni Storm's life through RJ City.First Meeting All About EveEve meets Margo for the first time as her big fan in the dressing room before a performance. All About MariahMariah meets Toni in a similar fan-like manner.Suspicion of IntentionsAll About EveMargo's maid, Birdie, gets suspicious of Eve's intentions immediately. All About MariahToni's butler, Luther, is similarly suspicious of Mariah's motives.Adopting the Star's PersonaAll About EveEve tries on Margo's costume while nobody is looking. All About MariahMariah always keeps hold of the AEW Women's World title and starts cosplaying as “Toni,” evolving from her rocker gimmick to her outcast gimmick.Becoming the UnderstudyAll About EveEve slowly manages to become Margo's understudy. All About MariahMariah starts repeating Toni's catchphrases and “learning from her.” They become “bosom buddies. With Orson Welles, Herman wrote the screenplay for Citizen Kane and shared the picture's only Academy Award. Joe earned the second pair of his four Oscars for writing and directing All About Eve, which also won Best Picture. The book is part of the Hollywood Legends Series of the University of Mississippi Press. Despite triumphs as diverse as Monkey Business and Cleopatra, and Pride of the Yankees and Guys and Dolls, the witty, intellectual brothers spent their Hollywood years deeply discontented and yearning for what they did not have—a career in New York theater. Herman, formerly an Algonquin Round Table habitué, New York Times and New Yorker theater critic, and playwright-collaborator with George S. Kaufman, never reconciled himself to screenwriting. He gambled away his prodigious earnings, was fired from all the major studios, and drank himself to death at fifty-five. While Herman drifted downward, Joe rose to become a critical and financial success as a writer, producer, and director, though his constant philandering with prominent stars like Joan Crawford, Judy Garland, and Gene Tierney distressed his emotionally fragile wife who eventually committed suicide. He wrecked his own health using uppers and downers in order to direct Cleopatra by day and finish writing it at night, only to be very publicly fired by Darryl F. We've only covered Bette Davis twice before now (including the classic All About Eve), but she's nearly as good in Dark Victory as she was in that or in anything else she ever made. Geraldine Fitzgerald does solid work here too, but George Brent, Ronnie Reagan and even Humphrey Bogart just aren't as up to snuff. In any case, Edmund Goulding directs them all through a tragi-drama about a socialite (Davis) who gets a brain tumor, then falls in love with her brain doctor (Brent). And they're both liars. Have any of us been as dishonest as the lovebirds are in this film, especially when the stakes are so high? Well, despite those frustrations, this is a emotional film with a touching ending. Thomas and James discuss two classic Hollywood films dealing with the moral problems of overweening ambition - specifically in the context of show business. All About Eve (1950), which won six Oscars and features razor-sharp dialogue and an unforgettable performance by Bette Davis, is set in the world of the theater, while The Bad and the Beautiful (1952) is a (perhaps more honest) self-examination of Hollywood itself. The latter contains the more perceptive observations of artistic genius and its operations, which tend to subordinate everything to the work to be done. More broadly, it's a study of leadership, in both its positive and its more self-serving forms. At long last, for this week's Birthday Girl's Choice we're finally discussing the classic actressing buffet that is “All About Eve”! Anne Baxter, Bette Davis, Celeste Holm and Thelma Ritter took a lion's share of Oscar nominations that year, and Best Supporting Venomous Fishwife Addison DeWitt earned George Sanders a well deserved win. We do a lot of fantasy casting, from Real Housewives to Black Hollywood, and queen out on Eve's hair, Margo's pockets, Karen's companionship, the hot roast beef sandwich that is Gary Merrill and the aged to perfection Thelma Ritter. Continuing this season's line-up of ICONIC AND INCREDIBLE WOMEN, I am veritably trembling with delight to bring you today's guest: the extraordinary Gillian Anderson. Her 30-plus year career has taken her from playing FBI Special Agent Scully in The X Files to Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in The Crown. She's been a dogged detective in The Fall and an unembarrassable sex therapist in the Netflix hit show Sex Education. On stage, she has been everything from Blanche duBois in A Streetcar Named Desire to Margo Channing in All About Eve. It's almost easier to list the roles she hasn't played than the ones she has.Owing to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA actors strike, we don't talk about any of her acting roles. Instead, this liberates us to have a fascinating chat about life, fame, womanhood and everything in between. We talk about her failures to look after herself, her addiction to work, how she coped with global celebrity in her 20s and how this affected the way that she saw herself. Plus: why she thinks wellness culture is making us ill and why her natural instinct when someone tells her what to do is to say 'F** off.'--Gillian's healthy soft-drink range, G-Spot, is available to buy here. (Not an ad but it tastes EXCELLENT).--I'm going on tour! To AUSTRALIA, mate! You can now purchase tickets to see me live at Sydney Opera House on 26th February 2024 or the Arts Centre Melbourne on 28th February 2024.--How To Fail With Elizabeth Day is hosted and produced by Elizabeth Day.
