You might know her best from Shaun Micallef's Mad as Hell, but over the past 20 years, Christie Whelan Browne has become one of the most in-demand stars of the Australian stage, appearing in Britney Spears: The Cabaret, The Producers, Shane Warne: The Musical and Muriel's Wedding. But the thing that has kept her in the headlines is no laughing matter – the allegations of sexual harassment she made against her Rocky Horror Show co-star Craig McLachlan in late 2017. Today, Whelan Browne takes a break from rehearsing a musical version of All About Eve to chat about everything from our shifting attitudes to Britney Spears, the joy of an IVF baby and the stress of living through three very public court cases over six years. Send us Fan MailA midnight phone call, a “humble” superfan, and one Broadway legend who can feel the air shifting before anyone else admits it. I'm back with my film review of All About Eve, and the deeper I go, the more this classic Hollywood drama reads like a modern thriller about fame, identity, and social engineering. We follow Margot Channing (Bette Davis) as her world gets crowded by Eve Harrington, the seemingly soft-spoken admirer who knows every line, every detail, and exactly where to stand to become indispensable. I break down the birthday party tension, the understudy shock, and the way age anxiety in the theater turns into a pressure point that Eve exploits. If you've ever watched a “friend” learn you a little too well, you'll recognize the pattern. Then there's Addison DeWitt, the critic who isn't just stirring the pot, he's taking notes and cashing them in. We unpack the blackmail, the press games, and the chilling ending that suggests the real story is the system that rewards performance even offstage. Expect themes like ambition, manipulation, Broadway politics, classic film character analysis, and why admiration can be a tool for domination. Listen now, then subscribe, share with your favorite drama watcher, and leave a review with your take: is Eve the mastermind, or is Addison?

Send us Fan MailA streaming app flips one tiny switch and suddenly we're staring at the silver-screen résumé behind our favorite soap-era stars. That little moment turns into a bigger idea: if you love soap operas, you already love the engine that powers classic Hollywood drama. So we start something new, a classic film review under our own made-up banner, and we pick an icon for the first ride: All About Eve. We go from initial black-and-white hesitation to full-on delight the second Bette Davis shows up as Margot Channing, a stage legend with bite, wit, and a tired patience for everyone who wants a piece of her. From there, the story drops us into an awards dinner where theater critic Addison DeWitt narrates with maximum snobbery and minimum mercy. When Eve Harrington accepts a major award, the reactions around the table tell us everything: something happened, and we're about to find out what. We follow Karen's flashback to the night Eve finally approaches, we unpack Eve's tragic backstory and obsessive devotion, and we track how “helpful” turns into “inserted” the moment Bill heads to Hollywood. By the end of Part 1, Eve is in Margot's home, in her clothes, and maybe even in her head, while Bertie stands nearby looking like she's seen this movie before. If you're searching for an All About Eve recap, classic Hollywood podcast commentary, or a character-driven film analysis of Bette Davis at her best, you're in the right place. Hit play, then subscribe so you don't miss Part 2. If you're enjoying the new classic film lane, share the episode and leave a review, and tell us what movie we should tackle next.

In this episode of Rewatching Oscar, I dive into one of the greatest films ever made about the theatre, stardom, and the razor-sharp ambition lurking behind the curtain: All About Eve. Released in 1950 and starring the legendary Bette Davis, Anne Baxter, George Sanders, Celeste Holm, and Thelma Ritter, this Oscar-winning classic isn't just a masterclass in acting—it's a biting, witty, and surprisingly timeless take on fame, friendship, manipulation, and power. We'll explore the film's iconic performances, the brilliance of Joseph L. This time we watched the 1973 British horror film Psychomania, a cult biker horror oddity originally filmed as The Living Dead before the title changed. In the United States it appeared as The Death Wheelers. Not to be confused with the 1963 American film Psychomania, also known as Violent Midnight. The film was produced by Benmar Productions, better known for Spaghetti Westerns shot in Spain. They also made Horror Express later the same year with the same writers, which we covered back in episode 7. Psychomania was created in association with Scotia Bar Distributors who had director Don Sharp under long term contract.Don Sharp was born in Tasmania and began as an actor before becoming a director in the mid 1950s. He turned out low and medium budget films including the Tommy Steele musical It's All Happening, then Hammer Films hired him and he made several well received thrillers. He also worked as second unit director on Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines. Quiz time for Jon. Sharp directed BigChrisLee six times. Name them. Beryl Reid plays psychic medium Mrs Latham. She left school at 16 and debuted in 1936 as a music hall performer at the Floral Hall in Bridlington. She became famous on BBC radio in Educating Archie as Monica and as the Brummie Marlene. She later worked for the National Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company. She made the very first challenge on Just A Minute in the 1967 pilot. In the late 1970s and early 1980s she played Connie Sachs in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and Smiley's People, earning two British Academy Television Award nominations and winning for Smiley's People. Doctor Who fans will know her as Captain Briggs in Earthshock. The same year as Psychomania she appeared in Dr Phibes Rises Again. Ross will always remember her as Grandma in the Adrian Mole TV adaptation. Nicky Henson plays lead biker Tom Latham. A familiar face across British television, he excelled at playing cultivated gents, snobs and playboys. His many guest roles included several appearances in The Bill, A Touch of Frost, Pie in the Sky, Fawlty Towers and Witchfinder General as Trooper Swallow. His first wife was Una Stubbs, with whom he later appeared in EastEnders. Despite living with cancer for twenty years he continued acting on screen until 2018. Robert Hardy plays Chief Inspector Hesseltine. We discussed him fully in episode 41a when we covered The Stalls of Barchester from the BBC Ghost Stories for Christmas series. Academy Award winner George Sanders plays Shadwell. Born in Russia to an English horticulturist mother and a rope maker father, he became a British subject when the family fled during the revolution. His smooth voice and upper class accent made him perfect for polished villains. His roles included Jack Favell in Rebecca, Scott Folliott in Foreign Correspondent, the Saran of Gaza in Samson and Delilah and Addison DeWitt in All About Eve which won him the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. He voiced Shere Khan in Disney's The Jungle Book and played Simon Templar in several films in The Saint series. British horror fans may know him from the Doomwatch movie as The Admiral. There are brief appearances by June Brown as Mrs Pettibone, John Levene from Doctor Who and Bill Pertwee as a publican. Levene worked with Jon Pertwee who was Bill's second cousin. The soundtrack by John Cameron was released in 2003 by Trunk Records. Cameron said they needed something spooky and different with a rock feeling, all pre synthesizer. They recorded at Shepperton's studios which had not been updated since before the war. He described hooligan musicians scratching inside pianos while the engineer sat there in suit and tie, completely anachronistic.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/general-witchfinders. Dana and Tom with Jaylan Salah Salman (film critic, author and poet, podcaster) discuss All About Eve (1950): written and directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz, cinematography by Milton Krasner, music by Alfred Newman, starring Bette Davis, Anne Baxter, George Sanders, Celeste Holm, Hugh Marlowe, and Thelma Ritter.Plot Summary: All About Eve is a classic drama about ambition, fame, and betrayal in the world of theater. The film stars Bette Davis as Margo Channing, a talented but aging Broadway star who begins to feel threatened by a young admirer named Eve Harrington, played by Anne Baxter.Eve appears at first to be a devoted fan, eager to help Margo with her career. Margo takes pity on her and hires her as an assistant. But over time, Margo and her friends—including her playwright friend Lloyd Richards (Hugh Marlowe), his wife Karen (Celeste Holm), and theater critic Addison DeWitt (George Sanders)—realize that Eve has bigger ambitions. She wants Margo's fame, her friends, and even her roles on stage. As Eve schemes her way to the top, Margo must face her own insecurities about aging and love, especially with her younger boyfriend Bill Sampson (Gary Merrill). October 13, 2025 marked the 75th anniversary of the premiere of the Oscar-winning classic All About Eve, which the Alternate Ending crew decided made for a perfect excuse to revisit one of the most remarkable face-offs between two evenly-matched masterpieces in cinema history. In this corner: Eve, the caustically witty dark comedy about backstabbing and ageism in the world of legitimate theater. In the far corner: Sunset Blvd., the lacerating film noir about madness and ageism in the world of motion pictures. Two of the medium's most iconic female lead performances, top-tier screenplays by two of Hollywood's most celebrated writers... even if the team can't pick a favorite, it's a pleasure just to get to luxuriate in the presence of these two icons. To discuss the highs and... higher highs of these two classics, Tim is joined by Cameron, and Brian, and not least Zev, whose idea this was in the first place. Before getting to the main showdown, Cameron shares her thoughts on the new must-see cinephile bait, Paul Thomas Anderson's One Battle After Another, Zev catches up with the must-see-somewhat-less DreamWorks Animation comedy Dog Man, and courtesy of Patreon supporter and regular podcast guest Andrew Milne, Tim gets a third perfect 10/10 masterwork to talk about, in the form of John Woo's 1989 action epic The Killer. Brian unfortunately wasn't able to catch up with a movie, as he's just out a stay at the hospital that's put him out of work for a few weeks. Help him out during this difficult time by visiting his GoFundMe page!

Way, way back in Episode 12, we looked at Stage Door and All About Eve, a couple of films about the theater industry that had practically no theater in them. We're going back to that well only only 76 episodes later, with today's look at two films that also deal with stage performers and the things that go into getting something on the boards. But where Part 1 stuck to the United States, this time around we take you to Europe. Here in the first half we bring you Topsy Turvy (1999), a British film that gives us a (mostly true) account of how Gilbert and Sullivan managed to put together one of their most famous works, The Mikado. In Part 2 we take on a more Continental flavor with The Clouds of Sils Maria.

Movie of the Year: 1999All About My Mother vs. The MummyWhen Pedro Met PopcornIn this special bonus podcast episode of Movie of the Year, the Taste Buds take a detour from draft formats and single-film deep dives to bring you a dynamic double feature: Pedro Almodóvar's All About My Mother (1999) and Stephen Sommers' The Mummy (1999). One is an emotionally complex, internationally acclaimed art film. The other is a crowd-pleasing adventure spectacle. And yet—they share more than you might think. This podcast review examines how both films, in vastly different genres and tones, serve as love letters to the movies that came before them. Whether referencing classic melodrama or 1930s monster movies, All About My Mother and The Mummy demonstrate that the films of 1999 have a cinematic legacy as enduring as their memory. All About My Mother (1999) Movie Review: The Emotional EpicPedro Almodóvar's All About My Mother is an intricate, compassionate examination of motherhood, identity, and grief. The film is suffused with references to cinema—from All About Eve to A Streetcar Named Desire. The Taste Buds analyze how Almodóvar uses visual language and character archetypes to update and honor classic Hollywood and European melodramas, while giving voice to marginalized characters rarely centered on screen. The Mummy (1999) Movie Discussion: A Popcorn Adventure with Classic RootsIn contrast, The Mummy updates the 1930s Universal monster movies for a late-'90s audience. With Brendan Fraser as a swashbuckling hero and Rachel Weisz as a brainy librarian-turned-explorer, the film balances horror, comedy, and romance in a pulpy, action-packed romp. The Taste Buds explore how The Mummy evokes the spirit of early adventure films while reinventing its archetypes for a modern audience.Cinema About Cinema: Film History as FoundationDespite their differences, All About My Mother and The Mummy are united by their referentiality. Both films use a rich knowledge of film history—not as a crutch, but as a launching point. Almodóvar weaves old film tropes into new emotional truths. Sommers crafts a blockbuster that lovingly revives and retools a genre. The Taste Buds discuss how both directors use nostalgia not as imitation, but as inspiration. The Taste Buds Dig In: Movie Podcast Panel ReactionsThe panelists share their favorite moments from both films, comparing the emotional stakes, visual aesthetics, and thematic resonance. How does The Mummy's big-budget spectacle stack up against the intimate drama of All About My Mother? Which film aged better? And what do they reveal about what cinema meant in 1999?Different Genres, Same Passion for CinemaAll About My Mother and The Mummy may live in different cinematic universes, but both show how the movies of 1999 mined the rich soil of film history to grow something bold and fresh. Whether it's Pedro Almodóvar's poignant melodrama or Stephen Sommers' thrilling adventure, both films prove that storytelling evolves through homage and reinvention.

Her theatre credits include A Doll's House, A Streetcar Named Desire and All About Eve, all of which saw her nominated for Olivier Awards. Gillian Anderson has won Golden Globe and Emmy Awards for the X Files, and also for The Crown in which she played Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. More recently, she found a new generation of fans for role as a sex therapist in the series Sex Education. Her latest film is The Salt Path, adapted from the bestselling memoir by Raynor Wynn.Gillian Anderson tells John Wilson how, after being born in Chicago, she moved with her parents to Crouch End, London, when she was five, and then to Michigan at the age of 11. After what she describes as ‘rebellious' teenage years, she studied at Chicago's DePaul University with drama teacher Ric Murphy, whom she cites as a major influence on her early acting ambitions. After a series of minor stage roles in New York, she auditioned for The X Files and the role of Agent Scully changed her life. She also chooses the actor Meryl Streep as a major inspiration after seeing her with Robert Redford in the 1985 romantic drama film Out Of Africa. Reviewing All About Eve – with Professor Andrew BernsteinIn this episode of The Rational Egoist, Michael Liebowitz is joined by Professor Andrew Bernstein, Objectivist philosopher and author of Red Meat Village, to review the classic film All About Eve. Together, they explore the movie's themes of ambition, envy, integrity, and betrayal through a philosophical lens. Bernstein offers his perspective on how the film reflects deeper moral and psychological truths, and why it remains relevant today. This episode combines art and philosophy for a compelling look at one of Hollywood's most iconic dramas.Michael Leibowitz, host of The Rational Egoist podcast, is a philosopher and political activist who draws inspiration from Ayn Rand's philosophy, advocating for reason, rational self-interest, and individualism. His journey from a 25-year prison sentence to a prominent voice in the libertarian and Objectivist communities highlights the transformative impact of embracing these principles. 1950 was a year in which legendary classics like All About Eve and Sunset Blvd were released, but one of their competitors for the Best Picture Oscar was Vincente Minnelli's light comedy...which is itself a low-key classic. Father Of The Bride is well-written and it has more laughs than most movies that came out in that era, largely because Spencer Tracy knew how to be funny in a dignified way. He's nearly at his best in this as a successful lawyer...and he's also Elizabeth Taylor's dad. He's self-absorbed and unable to accept that his daughter has grown up & ready to get married, but he's lovable all the same. Kudos to Joan Bennett too as the MOTHER Of The Bride. Father Of The Bride may be fluffy, but it packs a bit of a melancholy punch, especially if you happen to be middle-aged like we are. Lisa becomes Krusty's assistant, which leads to her becoming famous. Now don't be confused, this may seem like a copy of "Bart Gets Famous", however it's actually a really fun homage to the classic film, "All About Eve". What was even more impressive was that we both loved the way Sideshow Mel was handled too! Added great depth to his character and gave a better understanding as to why he continues to put up with a gig he seemingly hates. Overall, a good season finale! We also discuss being unfriended on Facebook, Dando's love for collecting (or as Nicola calls it, "hoarding"), why modern Simpsons parody episodes don't work and more.By the way, Happy 4th Birthday to Dando's daughter, Holly!Support the Four Finger Discount Network for EARLY & AD-FREE access to every show we produce, as well as 100 hours of exclusive content!
