Ana Guzman, ideaXme space ambassador and leading space communications and space exploration television producer interviews Caley Burke, Aerospace Engineer and Trajectory Analyst for NASA's Launch Program. Ana Guzman comments: In my next interview for ideaXme, I was able to sit down and chat with Caley Burke, aerospace engineer at NASA’s Launch Services Program. She works on the interface between the spacecraft and launch vehicle teams to get the spacecraft delivered to their final destination in space. As part of her work, she analyzes trajectories of the rockets launching NASA and NOAA robotic spacecraft missions. Reducing Risk During Delivery of NASA's Exploratory Missions: Her position contributes to space exploration by providing expertise in reducing risk during the delivery of NASA exploratory missions to space and maintaining a wealth of knowledge in the expendable launch vehicle market. We discuss factors taken into account when deciding which trajectories and rockets are chosen for each mission, launch windows and opportunities from different parts of the world, and why a launch window to Mars occurs only every two years. Caley worked on the launches of Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) and the Mars 2018 lander, InSight, on an Atlas V, NuSTAR on a Pegasus XL, and Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) on a Delta II. She did early work on the Joint Polar Satellite System 2 (JPSS-2) mission to launch on an Atlas V rocket. NASA Kennedy Space Center: She started her NASA career as a Pathways intern in 2002 at Kennedy Space Center with the International Space Station (ISS) and later transferred to the Launch Services Program in 2003. She attended MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) via the Kennedy Graduate Fellowship Program and performed fluid slosh in microgravity research on the Synchronized Position Hold Engage and Reorient Experimental Satellites (SPHERES) platform on the ISS. Ana Guzman, ideaXme space ambassador, interviews Dr. William Stefanov, Manager at NASA’s Exploration Science Office at the Johnson Space Center. Ana Guzman Comments: In my next ideaXme interview, I speak with Dr. William Stefanov, Manager at NASA’s Exploration Science Office at the Johnson Space Center. We talk about ways astronaut photography can benefit human lives here on Earth. Many of us have seen and admired the beautiful pictures that astronauts and cosmonauts share on their social media channels. Did you know that these photographs also provide other benefits for us here on Earth? NASA Imagery: Through the United States Geological Survey department, NASA provides imagery data to countries who request disaster imagery support from the International Disaster Charter. William explains how his team at NASA provides disaster response support to many countries around the world using astronaut photography. From hurricanes to wildfires to volcanoes, astronauts are able to capture activities at different angles that provide observation data helping response teams on Earth. Being able to react quickly and take pictures at different angles gives astronauts an edge over satellite imagery. In this interview In the interview, you’ll hear about William’s career path from a Geology major at Arizona State University to eventually arriving at NASA. Working in aerospace was not his original goal or expectation, but an opportunity presented itself and he has been at the Johnson Space Center ever since. Not only is he supporting the International Space Station program, but is also working on future plans for surveying the moon in preparation for the upcoming Artemis lunar missions. Ana Guzman, ideaXme space ambassador, interviews Charity Weeden, Vice President of Global Space Policy at Astroscale. Ana Guzman Comments In my next interview for ideaXme, I was able to chat with Charity Weeden, Vice President of Global Space Policy at Astroscale. We talked about space policy and mitigation practices to alleviate the current situation of space debris, and methods of prevention to ensure spaceflight safety in the future. Space Debris 2020 is set to have the busiest launch schedule yet in aerospace history. With every launch and payload delivery, some rocket parts may linger in lower Earth orbit for long periods of time. There are also many decommissioned satellites that are no longer in use stationed in geosynchronous orbit. These lingering remains are referred to as space debris or space junk. After decades of launches, payload deliveries and space travel, it is starting to get a little cluttered. Astroscale Astroscale is proposing to aid in the removal of orbital debris by providing Active Debris Removal and End of Life services. Their mission is to “Secure long-term spaceflight safety and orbital sustainability for the benefit of future generations.” They are providing a technical solution at the same time as helping to define a business case for this service. They are also working with national space agencies, international institutions, non-profit organizations, insurance companies and satellite operators to develop norms, regulations and incentives that contribute to a responsible use of space. Astroscale has offices in Japan, United Kingdom, United States and Singapore. Charity Weeden Charity has a rich experience in aerospace operations, advocacy, and diplomacy. She is a 23-year veteran of the Royal Canadian Air Force. In the interview, you’ll hear her talk about the amazing experience of working for the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) inside Cheyenne Mountain in the state of Colorado in the United States. During her time with the military and working at NORAD, she served as part of a team in charge of monitoring space debris. She has also served as Senior Director of Policy at the Satellite Industry Association, and has formed a consulting business to support the space industry. I hope you enjoy this informative and interesting interview.
