While language can connect people to their culture and be a source of pride, it can also bring about embarrassment and anxiety. According to the Pew Research Center, 78 percent of U.S. Hispanics say it's not necessary to speak Spanish to identify as Latino. Still, 54 percent of those who don't speak the language say other Latinos have made them feel badly about it. Laura Barrón-López reports. Are you frustrated because people don't understand you when you speak Spanish? Are you worried that your pronunciation is incorrect? If so, this video is for you. In this video, Karo, the creator of the Automatic Spanish channel, explains why it is important to speak slowly when you are learning Spanish. Karo explains that when you are just starting to learn a language, it is more important to focus on correct pronunciation than speed. If you try to speak fast, you are more likely to make pronunciation mistakes, which can make it difficult for people to understand you. Karo also points out that children learn to speak by pronouncing words syllable by syllable. This is a good exercise for adults learning Spanish, as it helps them develop phonological awareness. To help you improve your pronunciation, Karo recommends some exercises. Karo also reminds you that speed is a result of your learning, not a goal in itself. With practice, your pronunciation will improve and you will be able to speak faster naturally.
