In the final episode of our Christian Anti-Judaism series (which began with our introductory episode [Episode #106] on 02/02/2022), we turn to discuss Jewish-Christian relations and interfaith dialogue with Larry Behrendt, who is an attorney and treasurer at his synagogue, having been involved in inter-religious dialogue for over ten years, and Dr. Anthony Le Donne, who is professor of New Testament at United Theological Seminary (Ohio). Together they are the authors of Sacred Dissonance: A Richer Faith through Jewish-Christian Dialogue (published by Hendrickson). At the outset Larry and Anthony discuss how their interfaith dialogue first began, how it eventually turned into a book, and some of the realizations and discomforts that came about from the process. Over the course of our conversation Larry and Anthony discuss the asymmetries of experience between Christians and Jews that make dialogue difficult, and the kind of “holy envy” that comes about through appreciation of the other side (as well as how problematic that envy can when it extends to appropriation). Team members of the episode from The Two Cities include: Dr. John Anthony Dunne and Dr. Chris Porter.

In this episode Anthony Le Donne and Larry Behrendt discuss Christian-Jewish dialogue, the focus of their book, Sacred Dissonance: The Blessing of Difference in Jewish-Christian Dialogue. (See my review of this volume here.) Behrendt is a Jewish lawyer and a specialist in interreligious dialogue with a specific emphasis on Jewish-Christian relations, and Le Donne is a Christian New Testament scholar teaching at United Theological Seminary. In this podcast we discuss aspects of their book, which "challenges the notion that a passive and self-contained approach to religious distinction will bring about peaceful coexistence. In candid conversations between the authors, every section of Sacred Dissonance models the ways in which conversation can be the means of both addressing a difficult past and a challenging present. In the course of exploring the ways in which Jews and Christians can speak to one another, Le Donne and Behrendt show that Christianity can become a 'pro-Jewish' religion, Judaism can become a 'pro-Christian' religion, and communities of faith can open space for others, rather than turning them away, even without breaking down the differences between them." WINTER IS COMING!  A. Ron of the Bald Move is on the podcast talking podcasting, online community, and Game of Thrones (GOT). It is fun. Not only is A. Ron host of my favorite GOT podcast, but he recently put out a two volume exploration of the religions of GOT. George R.R. Martin, author of GOT, recognized that many fantasy works (like LOTR) may explore religious themes, but they rarely have a rich tapestry of religious life. That is not a problem in Westeros. I hope you enjoy the episode and get prepared for part two late this week with Dr. Anthony Le Donne. In our conversation we cover a bunch of ground, including: How A. Ron fell in love with science fiction and fantasy forming community online and the Bald Move the Game of Thrones (GOT) experience what explains the cultural phenomenon that is GOT what is Martin getting at in the end game of GOT thinking through the redemptive arcs in GOT what are the motivations of the white walkers the Wall as the DMZ zone of the ancient war who is going to end on the iron throne... will there be a proto-democracy why we need more dire wolves Cleganebowl!!!
