The physiology of deciduous trees (start time: 11:09) For many people living in places with four distinct seasons, such as here in Colorado, a favorite pastime at this midpoint in autumn is watching the faded leaves fall from their branches, and listening to the crackling sound while raking up the dried leaves. Late last month, President Trump announced that the United States would be restarting nuclear weapons tests after a break of over 30 years. We've since learned that they won't be the explosive kind of tests, but this sent us down a rabbit hole — where we found a story about dinosaurs, Carl Sagan, and nuclear war. Because there was a moment in the not-so-distant past when we learned what drove the dinosaurs extinct... and that discovery, made during the Cold War, may have helped save humans from the same fate. The groundbreaking HBO series begins with Episode 1: Winter Is Coming, where we meet the honorable Stark family of Winterfell, led by Eddard “Ned” Stark (Sean Bean, The Lord of the Rings, GoldenEye), his wife Catelyn Stark (Michelle Fairley, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows), and their children including Jon Snow (Kit Harington, Eternals, Pompeii), Robb Stark (Richard Madden, Bodyguard, Cinderella), Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner, X-Men: Dark Phoenix), and Arya Stark (Maisie Williams, The New Mutants). Across the realm, we meet the cunning Lannisters, including Cersei (Lena Headey, 300, Dredd), Jaime (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Headhunters), and the sharp-tongued Tyrion (Peter Dinklage, Avengers: Infinity War, Cyrano). Meanwhile, beyond the Narrow Sea, exiled princess Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke, Solo: A Star Wars Story, Me Before You) and her brother Viserys (Harry Lloyd, The Iron Lady) align with powerful warlord Khal Drogo (Jason Momoa, Aquaman, Dune). Episode 2, The Kingsroad, escalates tensions as Daenerys is forced into marriage, Jon Snow joins the Night's Watch at The Wall alongside Benjen Stark (Joseph Mawle), and a shocking act of betrayal pushes young Bran Stark (Isaac Hempstead Wright) into a tragic fate. Rector's Cupboard in Alberta, Canada. We set out on a road trip to visit some regenerative farmers we first met three years ago. In this episode, Todd and Allison and Amanda speak about the trip and about a visit to the Pine Haven Hutterite colony. It is the season of harvest, the autumn. Winter is coming. Looking at the skies and reading the news can bring about the feeling that an apocalypse is imminent. However, in the context of obvious challenge, without denying the real difficulties that are present, we found in people who tend the land and provide nourishment for the world, a faith and hope that is enlivening. We saw both the wonder of the earth and the gift of humanity. In this mini-series, we'll be speaking (again) with Marcus Reidner, a regenerative farmer from Happiness By the Acre and Rod Olson, an urban farmer and director of Land of Dreams. Enjoy the episodes! Welcome to September. Public media has had a rough summer. On July 18th, Congress passed the Rescissions Act of 2025, which eliminated $1.1 billion in funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. Then on August 1st, CPB announced they would be winding down operations. When folks talk about these cuts, they usually talk about the vital public services public media provides, such as emergency alerts. But we'd be remiss if we didn't also talk about how NPR is an audio storytelling powerhouse. Throughout the month, we've partnered with our friends at NPR to present four pieces that represent the breadth and depth of their incredible reporting. We hope you enjoy.****************************Dinosaurs, Carl Sagan, and nuclear war. There was a moment in the not-so-distant past when we learned what drove the dinosaurs extinct — and that discovery, made during the Cold War, may have helped save humans from the same fate. In this episode, we'll take a journey from prehistoric times to the nuclear age and explore how humans contend with fears of the end.To access bonus episodes and listen to Throughline sponsor-free, subscribe to Throughline+ via Apple Podcasts or at plus.npr.org/throughline. Alright, folks, it's that time of year again! Eric G is dishing out his updated 2025 fall home maintenance checklist to prep your castle for the winter wonderland that's just around the corner. You know, because who wants to deal with frozen pipes and other household catastrophes when it's freezing outside? We're diving into all the must-do tasks, from cleaning out those pesky gutters to ensuring your garage door isn't about to collapse under the weight of a snowstorm. Trust me, you'll want to stick around for the juicy tips that'll save you from turning your home into a winter disaster zone. So grab your notepad (or just hit pause and replay later, I won't judge) and let's get that big investment of yours all cozy and ready for the chill!Takeaways: Eric G's fall home maintenance checklist is essential for prepping your home for winter weather. It's like giving your house a warm blanket before the cold hits! Don't forget to remove and store garden hoses before the freezing temperatures come to avoid burst pipes. Trust me, no one wants a mini geyser in their yard! Inspect your chimney regularly; chimney fires are a real threat. You don't want to turn your cozy wood-burning fireplace into a disaster zone, do you? Make sure your downspouts are directing water at least 10 feet away from your foundation to prevent water intrusion. Your foundation will thank you later! Always check your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. They're like the bouncers of your home, keeping unwanted danger at bay! Rodents love to sneak in during the fall, so secure all entry points around your house. If they get in, it's not just a mouse problem; it's a full-on rodent rave! In Episode 436 of Hidden Forces, Demetri Kofinas speaks with economist, policy adviser, and investor Sony Kapoor about why developed world demographics, debt, and political sclerosis will crush forward returns for investors who fail to rebalance their portfolios for the new investment paradigm. Kapoor and Kofinas spend the first hour of their conversation unpacking the thesis explored by Sony in two of his papers: “Winter Is Coming” and “The Case for a Great Rebalancing” in which he argues that global capital has been increasingly misallocated due to factors such as the growth of passive indexation, maladaptive benchmarking, and an excessive focus on short-term performance at the expense of long-term returns. They explore how demographic tailwinds in advanced economies have flipped into headwinds; whether AI driven productivity gains can realistically offset the drag of declining birth rates; why accommodative post GFC monetary and fiscal policies undermined political stability in developed countries; and what recent stresses—including dollar weakness, Treasury market liquidity scares, and an increased reliance on short-term debt financing—suggest about looming financial repression, fiscal dominance, and a rotation out of U.S. capital markets. The second hour is devoted to a conversation about investor incentives, market structure, investment opportunities in emerging markets, and how to construct a more diversified portfolio suitable for the world that is coming into being. Demetri and Sony discuss why political and currency risks may now be lower for a diversified emerging markets basket than for a similarly diversified portfolio of developed market assets. They discuss what a reweighting toward emerging markets could look like; why India stands out given its digital public rails and domestic-demand engine; how places like Indonesia, Brazil, and Nigeria fit into a rebalancing; and how to think about geopolitics, US policy risk, and portfolio construction in this new paradigm. Former meteorologist Tony Dale joins the show to discuss his eerily accurate prediction of a global cooling trend—just as new studies confirm unprecedented ice accumulation at both poles. In a wide-ranging conversation, Dale challenges mainstream climate narratives, arguing that cyclical solar activity, not CO₂, is the true driver of Earth's climate. From gardening delays to unreliable weather forecasts and historical parallels of instability, Dale explains how electromagnetic shifts in the sun impact not just temperatures, but political, economic, and social patterns. The segment ends with a warning: as the climate cools and instability rises, the public will need to see past media denial and prepare for dramatic changes ahead.
