You know her from Bravo's Real Housewives of NYC latest season. You know that she's outspoken, strong, and beautiful. You know that she loves to have a great time. But what you don't know, is that like so many of us, she is a devoted single mother who is steadfastly committed to positive co-parenting.  Was it always so positive for her? Of course not, it takes all of us years to get to that positive co-parenting point - even for women as strong as Leah. If you saw Leah's interactions with her daughter's father, Rob, in one of the latest episodes of Real Housewives of NYC, you'd never think that their relationship ever involved resentment, fighting, and sadness. Right now, their relationship is gold, and for lack of a better term, they are GOALS. Hear all of Leah's secrets to maintaining a healthy co-parenting relationships with her daughter's father, and also enjoy her juicy little tidbits about their past (you'll laugh your ass off), in this episode of Moms Moving On. Leah McSweeney is a streetwear pioneer, female entrepreneur, cultural provocateur, influencer, and mother living in New York City. Leah became notorious in New York City for launching Married to the Mob in 2004, one of the first streetwear brands for women, by women. For Leah, MOB was a direct response to the male domination of the streetwear scene at that time, and she set out to prove that women could not only establish themselves as innovators, designers and influencers in the arena, but as consumers as well. She successfully brokered exclusive partnerships for MOB with some of the world’s most desirable brands, like MCM, Kangol, Barbie, colette Paris, Reebok, Burton, and Nike to make MOB a cult classic brand. When she is not building fashion empires, Leah brings her strong female voice and viewpoint to debates about pop culture, feminism, and sex as an advice columnist for Penthouse magazine and the co-host of the popular podcast, Improper Etiquette, as well as a contributor to Hypebae, Office Magazine, and Mass Appeal. As Leah continues to advocate for female empowerment, street culture and creative entrepreneurship, she also leans into lifestyle topics like health, fitness and breaking the stigma around mental health. Leah is currently raising her 12-year-old daughter in New York City. Learn more about Leah, here.

SHOW NOTES: This week on the podcast is Leah Ward, the community coordinator at the University of Dayton, Ohio. This is the second episode within the series the EDpat Literature Review and today, you’ll hear a conversation between Leah and I about her chapter titled Swiss Miss: A Story of Surviving Abroad. Leah’s chapter is one of eleven chapters in the book The Table: Stories from Black Women in Student Affairs, which is a collection of Black women’s voices who discuss their experiences within various roles and at universities. I am so excited about this interview with Leah because the entire time I spoke with her I kept thinking about the quote that James Baldwin said to Nina Simone “This is the world you have made for yourself, now you have to live in it.” As Leah took me through her experience as a Black woman in Switzerland, I realized that the universe had brought Leah and I together because at that same time, I was reading Nina Simone’s autobiography and learned that after she left Liberia, she moved to Switzerland so that her daughter could continue her education. In contrast to Nina Simone’s story, Leah applied for a position as a student life coordinator during her time at Virginia Tech. The position required that she assist a group of study abroad students in Switzerland. With the intention to assist the students, in actuality, she found herself within cultural and racial tensions which involved being an African American woman in a small Swiss village. Without any further delay, enjoy my conversation with Leah Ward. Have you ever felt like you needed a mentor? Someone you could count on in the workplace, an education setting, or even simply as a trusted friend? For school students this can be an incredibly important source of support. My guest today is Leah Shmerling, the director and principal consultant at career coaching and training. As part of her range of training solutions, Leah runs courses on coaching and mentoring for teachers through Teacher Training Australia, or TTA. And it’s through these course that she’s able to share her experience with teachers, so that they can help students with challenges at school, and the difficult transition from school to tertiary or work life. As Leah explains, she was fortunate to benefit from a great mentor herself…. something she’s cherished for a long time.

Sermons & Such - Haven Berkeley Faith Community

When trying to sort through what we might actually be hearing from God, a classic quandary is the question “Is that God or is that me?”. As Leah points out in this second teaching on discernment, a first step in answering that question has to do with understanding ourselves better, so we are more aware of what our own voice actually sounds like. This teaching includes a look at Jesus’ journey growing in self-awareness. It also considers what tidying (via Maria Kondo) and the Enneagram typology (via Richard Rohr and Christopher Heuertz) might teach us about ourselves. To learn more about the Enneagram, check out the following resources:Books - The Road Back To You by Ian Morgan Cron and Suzanne StableThe Sacred Enneagram by Christopher HeuertzThe Enneagram: A Christian Perspective by Richard Rohr and Andreas EbertPodcasts - The Liturgists “Enneagram” Episode (Episode 37)The Road Back to you PodcastListen to the teaching below or review Leah’s notes here.

What I love most is when someone tells me that they too, relate to what I’ve written. I love the community that songs create. They make us all feel a little less alone”. At it’s core, Running In Borrowed Shoes is an album about community and that sense of togetherness that we can all experience through music.
