We started “It's Political” two years ago with an episode on the NDP's supply and confidence agreement. Back then, we wondered, would the party get any credit for what they accomplished? Two years on, public opinion polls suggest the answer is “no.” The NDP believes the answer is really “maybe,” and one they hope to turn into a resounding “yes.” This week, we look at the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for the NDP. First, Toronto Star reporter Raisa Patel, Abacus Data CEO David Coletto, Singh's chief of staff Jennifer Howard, will lay out the challenges, internally and externally for the NDP. Then, our panel of NDP strategists will discuss what the party should do and can do to unite progressives against the possibility of a majority Conservative government. Finally, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh will join us to discuss the supply and confidence agreement with the Liberals and the path ahead. Some of the clips this week were sourced from the House of Commons, CPAC, CBC, CTV, and Global. This episode of “It's Political” was produced by Althia Raj and Michal Stein. Joy SpearChief-Morris assisted with production. Matt Hearn helped Kevin Sexton mix the show. Our theme music is by Isaac Joel. In this episode: NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh, Toronto Star reporter Raisa Patel, Abacus Data CEO David Coletto, Singh's chief of staff Jennifer Howard, NDP strategist and GT & Co. partner Brian Topp, former NDP MP David Christopherson, former director of communications to Alberta NDP leader Rachel Notley and Wellington Advocacy vice president Leah Ward, and taxi driver Kirby Pittman. Hosted by Althia Raj.

SHOW NOTES: This week on the podcast is Leah Ward, the community coordinator at the University of Dayton, Ohio. This is the second episode within the series the EDpat Literature Review and today, you’ll hear a conversation between Leah and I about her chapter titled Swiss Miss: A Story of Surviving Abroad. Leah’s chapter is one of eleven chapters in the book The Table: Stories from Black Women in Student Affairs, which is a collection of Black women’s voices who discuss their experiences within various roles and at universities. I am so excited about this interview with Leah because the entire time I spoke with her I kept thinking about the quote that James Baldwin said to Nina Simone “This is the world you have made for yourself, now you have to live in it.” As Leah took me through her experience as a Black woman in Switzerland, I realized that the universe had brought Leah and I together because at that same time, I was reading Nina Simone’s autobiography and learned that after she left Liberia, she moved to Switzerland so that her daughter could continue her education. In contrast to Nina Simone’s story, Leah applied for a position as a student life coordinator during her time at Virginia Tech. The position required that she assist a group of study abroad students in Switzerland. With the intention to assist the students, in actuality, she found herself within cultural and racial tensions which involved being an African American woman in a small Swiss village. Without any further delay, enjoy my conversation with Leah Ward. Leah shares her story of creating great success in her life but in a space of unhappiness and wondering why. She goes on a journey to heal herself using both contemporary methods likes psychotherapy and antidepressants with no avail. The now-retired Chief Justice joined On Second Thought to reflect on why she pursued a career in the law, the steep climb from lawyer to judge to the Georgia Supreme Court, and life after stepping down from the bench.
