How does revenge shape our politics and relationships?

The Ethical Life

Episode 189: Hosts Scott Rada and Richard Kyte delve into the ethical tension between justice and revenge, revealing how these seemingly similar concepts diverge in motives, processes and outcomes. To illustrate the contrast, Kyte draws on the symbol of Lady Justice: blindfolded, holding scales and a sword — a figure meant to represent impartiality and measured response. Revenge, by contrast, is fueled by emotion and often lacks balance or mercy. The conversation spans everything from classic Westerns to contemporary political discourse. Kyte notes that revenge has long been a powerful storytelling device, particularly in films where personal retribution collides with the rise of law and order. But the desire to get even, he warns, can also corrode trust in real-world institutions. That concern is especially visible in modern politics. Kyte points to President Donald Trump, who has made retribution a recurring theme — both on the campaign trail and in office. Using political power to settle personal scores, Kyte argues, undermines democratic norms and risks turning governance into a vendetta. Later, the episode turns toward everyday life. From workplace slights to social media feuds, revenge often masquerades as justice. But as one district attorney told Rada, victims of identical crimes may respond in vastly different ways — some seeking harsh punishment, others showing surprising compassion. Kyte cautions that vengeance rarely delivers what it promises. According to philosopher Simone Weil, Kyte said that imagined evil can seem thrilling, but real evil is often dull, painful, and empty. Instead of ruminating about harm, he urges listeners to cultivate habits of empathy, forgiveness, and moral clarity.

This podcast episode features a conversation between Bill Press and Dahlia Lithwick, Author of Lady Justice, Senior Editor at Slate Magazine, Regular Contributing Analyst at MSNBC and AMICUS Podcast Host . They discuss:* **Concerns about the Rule of Law:** They express concern about the Trump administration's actions testing the legal system, particularly regarding court rulings, executive orders, and targeting law firms.* **Impeachment Threats:** Trump's calls to impeach judges for unfavorable rulings are discussed. Lithwick emphasizes that there's no basis for this and points out John Roberts' statement defending the judiciary.* **Supreme Court and Presidential Power:** They discuss the potential for the Supreme Court to rule against Trump's actions and the implications if he refuses to comply, raising concerns about a constitutional crisis. The "unitary executive theory" and its impact are also examined.* **Targeting Law Firms:** The administration's executive orders targeting specific law firms are scrutinized, focusing on the potential impact on the legal profession and the varying responses from law firms.* **Immigration Issues:** The episode covers the deportation of Venezuelan migrants under the Alien Enemies Act, highlighting the lack of due process and the problematic legal justification. Cases of students being detained and deported for protesting are also discussed, raising concerns about freedom of speech.* **Weaponizing the Justice Department:** The conversation touches on the concern that the Trump administration is using the Justice Department and the FBI to target its enemies, eroding the separation between the executive branch and law enforcement. The discussion centers on the erosion of legal norms and the abuse of power by the Trump administration. In this toxic legal environment, Bill points to the brave work of the American Civil Liberties Union. What subtle signs of judgment are often overlooked in Mr. Toad's London Square scene? In this episode of Distory, we hop back in our motorcar to Mr. Toad's Wild Ride in Disneyland for a deep dive into the history and symbolism found in the London Square and Law Court scenes. Along the way, we hear some often-missed audio, discuss the origins of Lady Justice, and notice some signs that are telling a greater story than most guests realize. As we take a spin around the symbolic fountain, we spy some interesting characters in the window, disturb some angry workers, and hear an obscure Mary Poppins chimney sweep story. Kate sings a few songs, Kirk shares some disgusting and disturbing pie stories, and we end up "Guilty" with a barrister-turned-judge (and some foreshadowing most people miss in the Law Court). Families are under attack by our family court system. Two parents say their children were put in harm's way when the judge placed them with the abusive parent. Nearly every six days in the US, a child is killed amid a custody dispute. Families are under attack by our family court system.  The big problem is these custody cases are often siloed from the criminal court system and the family judge is deciding in a vacuum.  Twenty-two-year-old RJ says he and his siblings were in a 15-year tug of war between his mother and father. RJ says he was collateral damage of a broken system that failed him.  RJ's mother says the judge in her case was biased and sent her to jail several times.  Jason says his 8-year custody battle over his daughter nearly killed him but he would do anything for his daughter.  Former Los Angeles Criminal prosecutor and co-anchor of News on Merit Street, Loni Coombs, went on assignment to find out if Lady Justice is failing families throughout America. Dr. Phil, Loni, Michigan Circuit Court Judge Rosemarie Aquilina who presides over family and criminal court cases, and psychiatrist and former medical director for Los Angeles County Department of Children & Family Services talk about why the family court is the most dangerous court in the US and what couples can do to avoid it for the sake of their children. Do you still believe the justice system in America works the way our founders intended? Do you still trust courts to make decisions based on the facts in evidence or do you expect politically motivated verdicts? The idea of Lady Justice blindfolded and weighing the evidence on her scales is eroding before our eyes. In city after city, violent criminals are allowed back on the streets to terrorize, assault, and rob innocent neighbors again. Domestic terrorists burn and vandalize pro-life pregnancy centers and the Justice Department says most cases can't be solved because the actions were at night.Meanwhile, peaceful protesters at abortion clinics are facing sentences of a decade or longer, people who committed no violence at the U.S. Capitol on January 6th are sentenced to prison for years, and prosecutors from New York to Washington to Atlanta are filing felony charges against President Trump for transparently political purposes. And then there's the border, where President Biden just waves illegal aliens into the country and provides food, shelter, and transportation at taxpayer expense instead of enforcing our laws and removing them from within our borders. It's insanity and it's a vivid glimpse of where the left wants to take this country.Today, Sarah discusses all of this and more with former Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich. Brnovich also defends his record on capital punishment in anticipation of attacks from humorless HBO comedian John Oliver. Congressman Tim Burchett says the soon-to-be released Jeffrey Epstein court documents will not offer much new information and he expects there will be a cover-up. He's suspicious how the most talked about prisoner in the world on suicide watch was allowed to commit suicide. Burchett also wants Epstein's client list contained in the little black book removed from Epstein's New York apartment. It's a misnomer to say he flew clients over to Epstein Island to have sex with kids. Burchett says they had violence with those kids. They ruined girls' and boys' lives and it shows how far we've fallen as a society that elites were allowed to do this. If we cannot look after these kids and prosecute people involved, we're doomed as a society. And if there are Democrats and Republicans in Congress on the client list, the public needs to know. Burchett says Lady Justice is no longer blind. She wears blinders and pops up now and then to take care of the elite, the wealthy and the powerful in this country. Burchett says you can't trust a government that doesn't trust it's people and right now, our government is not worth trusting. The Congressman says Speaker Mike Johnson was thrown into the deep end of the sewer in Washington, D.C. and it gets you from all angles. Burchett says we have to either shut down the border or shut down the government and he plans to have a heart to heart discussion with Johnson. If he doesn't get the right answers, Burchett says he's going to look for a new Speaker again because it's time to take a stand.GUEST: REP. The familiar image of Lady Justice, blindfolded, holding up balanced scales in one hand and a sword in the other (a little frightening if she can't see) suggests our desire that we will be a nation of laws and that there is only one standard of justice in the nation. We hope that the rich and the poor, people of all races, nations of origin, and public status will be treated the same in our courts. However, we know that is not how it really works. We have a goal of equal justice in mind but our execution of it seems to come and go in unreliable ways. The way the children of our two most recent presidents are being treated is a case in point.

And don't miss out on our exploration of Georgia legends Sally Yates and Stacey Abrams, their divergent paths in the legal system, and the disparities in access that still persist today. Here are three key takeaways from the episode:1️⃣ The episode highlights the impactful work of Stacey Abrams, who fought against voter suppression and created a successful model for other states. This is a reminder that grassroots efforts are integral in shaping our democracy.2️⃣ We explore the incredible legacy of Pauli Murray, a constitutional hero who played a pivotal role in shaping the thinking about the 14th Amendment. Murray's contribution often goes unrecognized, underscoring the importance of acknowledging the work of unrecognized individuals who fight tirelessly for equality and justice. It's a reminder that progress is driven by nameless heroes.3️⃣ We discussed the impact of prominent lawyers like Roberta Kaplan, whose high-profile lawsuits have brought about significant legal victories.Follow Our Guest:On X formerly known as Twitter: @DahliaLithwick.Follow Our Host:On X formerly known as Twitter: @LevinsonJessica

Bible Reading: Romans 3:23-24; Ephesians 2:4-10"Hey, look at that, Killian!" Nathan pointed out the car window to a big crane. "Mom, can we stop and watch?""Okay." Mom pulled over and watched with Nathan and his friend Killian as the crane lifted a golden statue to the top of the courthouse. Killian pointed to the statue. "Why is she blindfolded?""And what's in her hand?" asked Nathan."That's a statue of Lady Justice," said Mom. "She's blindfolded to show that justice shouldn't be influenced by who people are or how much money they have. She's holding a balance scale, which represents fairness. Both sides of the scale have to hold equal amounts. If a wrong is committed, the penalty has to balance the crime.""Balance the crime?" asked Nathan. "What does that mean?""The crime is on one side of the scale, and if the right penalty is on the other, they balance," Mom explained. "Say someone steals a pair of shoes from a store. To balance that, they'd have to pay for them, or give them back, and probably pay a fine for doing wrong.""Oh, I get it!" said Nathan."Is that how it works with God too?" asked Killian. "My sister says He's keeping track of all the bad things I do, and I'll have to pay someday. If I do lots of good things, will it balance out?"Mom shook her head. "People often think that's how it works, but all our good deeds can never be enough to balance the wrong things we do. The Bible says that what we do wrong is sin--and sin puts a lot of weight in the bad side of the scale.""Yeah. It's like our sins are a pile of stones," said Nathan. "And our good deeds are like feathers. We can't put enough feathers on the scale to balance the stones.""So how can we make it even?" asked Killian."We can't," said Mom. "But Jesus can. He paid the penalty for our sins by dying on the cross, and if we trust in Him, He puts His goodness on the scale for us."Nathan grinned. "His goodness does more than balance the scale. It knocks our sins right off, so it's like we never sinned at all, right, Mom?""Yep!" said Mom with a smile."Wow," said Killian. "Then that's what I want!" -Kathy GustafsonHow About You?Do you do good things to try to make up for bad things you've done? You can never do enough good things to balance your account with God.
