Baz Ashmawy is an Irish radio and television star whose series, 50 ways to kill your mammy, won him an Emmy. He's also a podcaster, dad of six and an outspoken advocate for feeling all the feels. Born in Libya to an Egyptian dad an Irish mum, he moved to Ireland age 6. One of the few dual heritage families in his part of Dublin suburbia at that time. His father left when Baz was just seven, an experience that had a profound effect on him and his sense of identity. He's experienced the highs and lows of fame and family life; come back from the brink more than once; and learned a few lessons about how to be sad, well along the way. Now, he says, these experiences have helped him become who he is today Here we talk about: Growing up dual heritage in Ireland in the 1980s His dad leaving ‘in search of happiness' Ageing, fear and pushing past comfort zones Taking ownership of sadness Toxic masculinity What happens when one of your lungs collapses on a transatlantic flight Days when all you want to do is stay in bed Being ‘on' and the pressure to perform How the joy of winning an Emmy only lasts for a week. After that? Is the little things, like steak for dinner or walking the dog Follow Baz @bazashmawy on Twitter and @bashmawy on Instagram Follow Helen on social media @MsHelenRussell How To Be Sad, the book, is out now. TV maestro Baz Ashmawy is one of my absolute favourite people in telly. What you see is what you get. He’s genuine, funny and decent to the core. Having had huge success in his career, it hasn’t always been a smooth road for him. 9 years ago, life was really tough; he underwent double-lung surgery and around the same time Irish TV stations had no interest in even meeting with him to discuss ideas. But despite it all, he kept working and creating and knocking on doors and it certainly paid off in the end. He pitched his show ‘50 Ways To Kill Your Mammy’ with his adorable Mam Nancy to SKY TV. They went on to win an EMMY Award and the TV format has now been sold all around the world. He lives in Rathmines with his wife Tanja and their six kids. And in this conversation, we talk about the kids going back to school, imposter syndrome, the power of manifestation, faking an appendectomy and plenty more!

"You only have three All-Irelands? Jesus, I thought you had more" - this is the sort of thing a footballer of Dara Ó Cinnéide's quality gets met with from time to time. Along with those three All-Ireland medals, he has 8 Munster medals, and is the sixth highest scorer in the history of Kerry football. He joins us today to tell us about "The Game That Changed His Life", being happy with his place in the pantheon, car journeys with Páidí, a stolen glance, the Kerry drought and why abuse beats pity. We also discuss Paul Mescal's hurling career, the sad end to Matt Damon's stay in Dalkey, Eoin and Murph's experience in the Damon household, Eddie Irvine, indoor pools, and Baz Ashmawy.
This week broadcaster, film-maker and all-round legend Baz Ashmawy joins Jarlath for another rip-roaring episode in the new series. With a beautiful honesty (and hilarity), Baz speaks about how himself and his partner share a fondness for fighting and the concept of men operating off of a 'brownie point' system. Baz also details how being raised by two women gave him a greater understanding of women and the impact that learning more about being a man from his mother than he ever did from his father had on him. From his relationship test between himself and a friend to his show Wingman, the art of the apology and the challenges of communication in relationships and much more, this is a thoroughly enjoyable conversation with a modern man who has nothing to hide. To hear Baz's brutally honest discussion of his biggest regrets, his toxic influences growing up, his selfish past and a rare discussion between Baz and Jarlath about intimacy and romance and much more, become a patron of the Irishman Abroad Podcast Network for just the price of a pint on www.patreon.com/irishmanabroad.
