Economists say South African motorists will have to tighten their belts as the price of fuel increased today. Both grades of petrol increased by 82 cents per litre, while diesel went up by R1.01 and R1.05 cents per litre. The increasses come as millions of South Africans struggle to keep their heads above the proverbial water, with the country's ever-rising cost of living and continuing load shedding. The increases have sparked concerns from ordinary South Africans, with households expected to fork out R1.29 cents more for illuminating paraffin at retail level, among other expences. For more on this Elvis Presslin spoke to Road Freight Association CEO, Gavin Kelly
Die Padvragvereniging sê hy is bekommerd oor vertragings by Transnet se Pier 2-vrageindpunt by die Durbanse hawe.

The Road Freight Association (RFA) has raised concern about the recent Cabinet announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa. The Association says the new Transport Minister Barbara Creecy and her deputy, Mkhuleko Hlengwa may lack experience in transport and the road freight supply chain. The controversial e-tolls on Gauteng highways were finally terminated at midnight on Thursday putting an end to a system many motorists had refused to buy into and pay for in many years. Transport Minister Sindiswa Chikunga and Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi led the celebrations as the government officially terminated the e-tolls. On Wednesday, Chikunga confirmed that e-tolls would be scrapped but said motorists would still be expected to pay their outstanding debts. The Organization Undoing Tax Abuse - OUTA- - however maintains that motorists will not be liable to pay outstanding eToll debt.
The South African National Roads Agency Limited, Sanral has announced an increase in toll fees. South African motorists will pay an additional 6.25% for their toll fees as of March. The South African Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) this week revealed that 70 fuel stations across South Africa are selling diluted diesel to profit from the rising price of fuel.
South African ports have been grappling with high levels of congestion and long queues of trucks waiting to enter the ports, which has now reached crisis proportions. To deal with the congestion in Richards Bay, Transnet has suspended processing trucks carrying coal. In Durban harbour, more than 70,000 containers are anchored off the coast of Durban with a three-week waiting period for offloading. This backlog, Transnet says, would likely only be cleared by February or March 2024. The state-owned enterprise said in a statement released earlier this week that it was implementing “a number of urgent interventions to address the backlogs at the Port of Durban and to ease the congestion at Richards Bay to minimise the impact on the South African economy” However, trust in South African ports has already suffered a blow been with Maersk, the global shipping giant, deciding that it will ditch Cape Town as a port of call in favour of Mauritius. In an interview with Biznews, Gavin Kelly, CEO of the Road Freight Association in South Africa said the issues at harbours have been coming for several years. Warnings have come from various industries, including mining for the past five to six years, signalling the impending collapse of core export corridors. He criticised Transnet for not foreseeing the disaster and stressed that South Africa, currently home to the largest port in Africa in Durban, risks losing this status. Kelly said a couple of years ago, exporters used to laugh at Dar-es-Salaam where it took 21 days to clear a container out of the port, it is now down to seven days. South Africa is going in the opposite direction. “We can no longer let state-owned entities that have proven to be absolutely useless to run these sort of crucial logistical nodal points and infrastructure points,” he said. These key points should be given to the private sector to run.

The national living wage is going up to at least £11 an hour from next April. Although it's claimed the rise will help two million of the lowest paid workers, many campaigners are saying it's still not enough for a decent standard of living in the current economic climate. The Real Living Wage is one alternative. It's a voluntary commitment from employers to pay their workers enough to meet their everyday needs, and unlike the government's living wage it's calculated according to the actual cost of living. We spoke to Sheila Blackburn and Margaret Beckett MP in 2021 about the history of the fight for a government-set minimum wage. An overall feeling of dismay is probably the best way to describe how transport operators are processing the latest diesel price hike on Wednesday. While petrol increased by 51c/l, it's the continuing hike in diesel - this month by R1.40/l - that will be straining the economic lifeblood of our economy. From crime and looting, to road blockages and a dysfunctional ports system, the road freight industry has been licking its wounds for some time now. Gavin Kelly, chief executive at the Road Freight Association (RFA) tells BizNews correspondent Michael Appel that operators can't keep on absorbing these increasing costs so it will, inevitably, filter down to an already overstretched consumer.

Government and road freight parties have signed an agreement to end the N3 blockades. The agreement involves an 11-point action plan which aims to addresses key concerns in the industry that have led to the blockades.
