SEASON 2 - EPISODE 185 - Malgosia Turzanska - Costume Designer In this episode of the Team Deakins Podcast, we speak with costume designer Malgosia Turzanska (HAMNET, PEARL, AIN'T THEM BODIES SAINTS). Malgosia's life in film began after seeking refuge from a chemistry exam in a movie theater, and, with an assist from her friend, she soon found herself helping director Agnieszka Holland (Season 1, Episode 144) on JANOSIK. Throughout the episode, Malgosia uses specific experiences from the films she's worked on to discuss her design process. During our discussion of HAMNET, Malgoisa reflects on collaborating with her fellow countryman and cinematographer Lukasz Zal (Season 2, Episode 102), and she reveals the character details she focused on during the development of the costumes for Agnes and William Shakespeare, played by Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal (Season 2, Episode 44). She later discusses how she works with actors in the fitting room, and she shares how they all might put their heads together to find the character. Plus, Malgosia reveals how cold emailing director David Lowery (Season 2, Episode 60) led to her working on AIN'T THEM BODIES SAINTS early in her career. - Recommended Viewing: HAMNET - This episode is sponsored by Aputure & Picture Shop

She's been dug up, renamed, reanimated, and gaslit — and Hollywood expects her to be grateful. Maggie Gyllenhaal's The Bride! resurrects the Bride of Frankenstein for a 1930s Chicago that feels equal parts Weimar cabaret and fever dream, with Jessie Buckley delivering a ferocious, uncontainable performance at the center of a film that can't quite contain itself. Mike White and Chris Stachiw dig into the ideas the film gets right, the heavy hand that undercuts them, and why a $80 million feminist Frankenstein movie ending on The Monster Mash is both the most logical and least earned conclusion imaginable.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-projection-booth-podcast--5513239/support.Become a supporter of The Projection Booth at http://www.patreon.com/projectionbooth

The marathon that is Awards Season (at least for those of us with jobs in media) finally came to its close last night. As has become tradition, the Run-Through podcast hosts, along with colleagues Taylor Antrim and Christian Allaire, gathered early on this foggy morning to discuss their takes on the 98th Academy Awards. The conversation started off with everyone's best dressed picks. For Chioma, this included Wunmi Mosaku who dazzled in her sparkling emerald green Louis Vuitton dress. The list of best dressed also included Renate Reinsve, another star in Louis Vuitton, and Gwenyth Paltrow in Armani Privé who both sported dramatic slits. Slits were just one of the fashion trends making a splash on last night's red carpet, reminding editors of Angelina Jolie's internet-breaking dress slit at the 2012 ceremony. Feathers were another item in vogue on the carpet and were worn by Teyana Taylor, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Demi Moore, Nicole Kidman, and Best Supporting Actress winner Amy Madigan. A conversation around the many jewels and rare diamonds being worn last night spawned a curiosity about the guards who work the Oscars. Perhaps a 2027 diamond guard get ready with me story is forthcoming? As for two of the biggest categories of the night—best actor and best actress—everyone was in agreement that Michael B Jordan and recent guest of the podcast Jessie Buckley, were chic and deserving winners. It’s Oscars Day, aka Christmas for people who like celebrity gossip and frocks. Holly Wainwright, Clare Stephens and Amelia Lester have a chaotic recap for you, including whether Leo stole Pedro’s moustache, the jokes that landed and the ones that flopped, and why justice was served in the Best Actor face-off. Plus, Louis Theroux has gone Inside the Manosphere for a new Netflix documentary, and there’s a lot to unpack. Are these men dangerous, or just shoddy salesmen looking for a mark? And while we’re at it, is Louis a little outplayed in the 'everything is content' era? And, are you a 'reply only' friend? We’re looking at the friendship dynamic where one person does all the heavy lifting while the other just reacts to the blue bubbles. Is it a problem if you’re the one who replies, but never reaches out? In other business, there is a literal culture war bubbling over whether being on The Pill decides which movie star you fancy. Elon Musk thinks it’s science, but we have some actual data (and common sense) to throw at that theory. Movie Mike dives into the millennial optimism era which is being described on TikTok as a strangely comforting, slightly delusional time in the late 2000s and early 2010s. Mike shares what movies best represent this era from 500 Days of Summer to Easy A as he remembers a world of hipster aesthetics, early Instagram, and a belief that life would only improve, often contrasting with current, more cynical times. Mike gives his mini review of Disney-Pixar’s Hoppers. In the Movie Review, Mike shares his thoughts on THE BRIDE! starring Jessie Buckley and Christian Bale. It takes place in 1930s Chicago where a groundbreaking scientist Dr. Euphronious brings a murdered young woman back to life to be a companion for Frankenstein's monster. Mike shares his thoughts on Jessie Buckley and Christian Bale’s amazing performances but ultimately why it felt like Maggie Gyllenhaal was holding back on the story she wanted to tell. In the Trailer Park, Mike breaks down Scary Movie 6 and the long awaited return of the Wayans brothers. Can a raunch parody movie of this magnitude work in today’s climate? The Oscars is two days away, and while experts predict with data, Mamamia Out Loud predicts with vibes. From naked afterparty guests to the high-stakes battle between Michael B. Jordan and Timothée Chalamet, Holly Wainwright, Clare Stephens, and Em Vernem are placing their bets and asking an important industry question - will Lewis Hamilton use this as a moment for a Kim K hard launch? Plus, the "boyboss" era is over and crying at work is officially encouraged, which is lucky. Emily shares her first Mamamia cry while Holly would still rather die than leak from the eyes. Is crying now a valid form of corporate communication, or just a sign that your workplace is the problem? Also, are you treating your morning like an “Opening Shift”? The theory leans into a morning that’s all about setting up for the day. Em’s into it, with her early-morning doomscroll and home-brewed coffee under her belt. Clare has a toddler, so her morning’s are… enough said, and Holly has left that chaos era behind. But the question remains - is the snooze button your friend or your enemy? Plus, the allure of the bald man and the happiest place on the Internet that celebrates them. And… recommendations: Em recommends How to get to heaven from Belfast on Netflix. This week on Forgotten Cinema: Now Showing, the Mikes take a look at "The Bride", Maggie Gyllenhaal's ambitious and visually striking monster film.Mike Butler comes away disappointed. While he believes the movie is phenomenally acted, beautifully designed, and impressively directed, the script simply does not work for him. The story feels unfocused, struggling to decide what it wants to be or what it wants to say. As Gyllenhaal's first big-budget film, it is a strong showcase for her talents behind the camera, but Butler feels the screenplay ultimately lets the entire project down. That said, there is still a lot to admire. Jessie Buckley delivers an incredible performance as the Bride, Christian Bale is fantastic as “Frank,” and the film closes with the best end credit song in recent memory.Mike Field had a similar reaction walking out of the theater, but after sitting with it for a day he found himself warming up to the film. Not because he disagrees with the criticisms of the script, but because he appreciates how different the movie is from most modern blockbuster fare. That leads to the bigger question the Mikes explore in this episode. Is being different enough to make a film good?Ambitious, strange, and deeply divisive, "The Bride" is a film that sparks a lot of discussion even if it does not fully come together. What did you think of The Bride? Let us know in the comments!

No one loves movies more than Stephen and Neal do, which is why we love them. They did not, however, love The Bride!, Maggie Gyllenhaal's bizarre reinterpretation of the Frankenstein mythos. Jessie Buckley may win the Oscar this year. But she's going to win a Razzie next year. The Bride! is an all-time turkey. BFG likes to be on the right side of history.Enjoy the show! Jessie Buckley is nominated for best actress at the Oscars this weekend, for her performance in the movie “Hamnet.” She plays the wife of William Shakespeare — and a grieving mother — as the couple confronts the loss of their only son. The role has already won her a Golden Globe, a BAFTA and an Actor Award. In a conversation on “The Sunday Daily,” The Times's chief movie critic, Manohla Dargis, said it would be a major upset if Buckley did not also win an Academy Award. Ahead of the ceremony, we're bringing you our conversation with Buckley from last year. “When I was filming ‘Hamnet,' I deeply wanted to become a mother,” Buckley said. “And it was such a gift to move through this woman and her motherhood and her love and her loss before I became a mother myself.” On this episode of “Modern Love,” Buckley describes how she was able to access the vulnerability she portrayed onscreen. And she talks about how her life has changed since having her own child. Plus, she reads the Modern Love essay “The Wrong Kind of Inheritance” by Victoria Dougherty.
