Fast Track Apprenticeships!

The importance of apprenticeships when getting people into construction can not be understated and for many an apprenticeship is the first step into the industry. But recently the government shortened the minimum length of apprenticeships to just 8 months meaning that an additional 10,000 apprentices could qualify each year! So today I asked are short apprenticeships necessary to fight the shortage of tradespeople OR could they cause a major problem?! I was joined by the Government's Skill Minister RT Hon Baroness Jacqui Smith and DIY SOS' Chris Frediani to hear their views - Plus there's also the pub lunch quiz and you'll hear the very best messages we received - Enjoy.

Along with his team and the sustainable platform Planted, he currently has an exhibition at the Roca Gallery in South London, which focuses firmly on bio design – illustrating what it is, why it's important, and how it can be used in the spaces we inhabit. Oliver has been a fixture on our TV screens since 1998, working for the likes of the BBC, ITV, Channel Four, the Discovery Channel and Norway's TV2. He is a regular on DIY SOS and was, of course, one of the designers on the iconic '90s show, Changing Rooms. In this episode we talk about: his fascination with biophilia and how it affects his practice; its core principals and history; why sustainability is about more than counting carbon; problems with architecture education; his issues with clay; the importance of evidence in his design approach; how wood effects the heart rate; being average at school; getting famous on Changing Rooms; reinventing himself professionally… and the importance of soup. And remember the Material Matters fair takes place at Bargehouse, Oxo Tower Wharf from 18-21 September. Welcome to the August episode of The Mortgage Mum Podcast. This month Kim Balasubramaniam, one of our Senior Mortgage Brokers is guest hosting the podcast and welcomes interior designer Sophie Robinson to the show. Sophie has enjoyed a long and creative career as a TV presenter, podcaster, journalist, stylist and designer with over two decades of experience in the interiors and media industry. You will recognise her from TV shows such as DIY SOS and most recently the BBC's Interior Design Masters. Sophie is well known for her love of colour and pattern and is on a mission to ban the beige! Her brand is about so much more than interior design though; it's about giving others the inspiration, know-how and confidence to be creative in their own home, and in an affordable way at that. In this episode we talk through Sophie's own journey with redesigning and renovating her family home; a tile hung cottage in the countryside that has undergone quite the transformation in the last few years.  Sophie shares her super useful tips for space planning like a pro, how to view the layout of a property when house hunting, and how simply changing the function of spaces can have a huge impact on how you live in your home. We discuss how the age-old adage of keeping everything neutral won't actually add the most value to your home, and how carefully chosen interiors can actually do the opposite. Sophie shares her top tips for injecting colour and personality into your home design to create a joyous space that works for you and your family, and how this has been proven to have a direct impact on our wellbeing. Finally we hear about her exciting future plans, and how her kitchen design was inspired by her new wallpaper collection. It can get hard reporting on positive news when we have a Government in place who are simply taking the piss with key-workers. People are starting to come together though and there are signs that people have had their fill of the Tories. More and more trade unions are saying Enough is Enough with their workers going on strike. But, despite this, we do have something really inspiring to report on in this episode and a chance for us to do some good - people get to a point in their lives when they want to give something back. Many are doing this already. Here is a chance to give something back and support a really good cause. Many of you will have heard of the TV programme DIY SOS. Bandofla has been inspired by this show and we are doing our own DIY SOS campaign to help the historic mosque in Dalston, also known as the Ramadan Masjid (or Shacklewell Lane Mosque) to try and organise some much needed work to get disabled-friendly toilets put into the mosque. Listen to the show for more info. We will be touching on a massively successful World Cup in Qatar where Lionel Messi finally settled the 'Who is the current best footballer in the world?' question and we will also update listeners on the continuing shitfest that is this Tory Government. There will be much more so tune in and see what Bandofla is talking about. Don't forget to follow us on Twitter, Spotify and YouTube and help us share the love.

The Internet Watch Foundation has been tracking the increasing trend of perpetrators grooming children online and coercing them into sexually abusing themselves on camera. The foundation has recognised a lot of what they are seeing as Category A, the most severe kind of sexual abuse, due to it including penetration with an object. Some of the child victims of this online sexual abuse are as young as 7 years old. For the first time, a snapshot study out today looks into the objects being used, and how they are everyday domestic items that can be found in the household. We hear from Susie Hargreaves, CEO of the Internet Watch Foundation, and CEO of the Marie Collins Foundation, which supports child victims of online abuse, Vicki Green. The story contains content that some listeners may find distressing. She's been on screen in nearly 2,000 different film and TV appearances and yet she may have completely escaped your notice. Now the woman thought to be Britain's most prolific extra - Jill Goldston - has become the actual star of a short film called "Jill, Uncredited". She joins Anita in the studio to talk about her life lived just out of focus behind some of the world's biggest movie stars. It's Children in Need tonight so we thought we'd look at one of the projects it funds. Getaway Girls is a charity which first opened its doors to women and girls in Leeds 35 years ago initially offering girls a safe space to go to make friends and learn new skills to empower them and help grow their confidence. Over the years it has worked to support girls who have experienced difficulties at home from domestic violence, exploitation or sexual abuse to newly arrived refugees. Getaway Girls has received funding from BBC Children in Need since 2010 and this year in partnership with BBC Radio 2 it has a new home thanks to the DIY SOS the Big Build team. Alia Nessa, Operations Manager at Getaway Girls talks about the project. We speak to Judith Kilshaw who was once seen as Britain's ‘most hated woman'. She caused outrage internationally after she and her husband paid a fee to adopt twin babies in the US. The case led to a change in UK adoption law and now she is speaking out in a new documentary which tells the stories of the three mothers involved. Welcome to episode 43 and in this week’s brilliant business interview you’ll discover the following three business insights; 1) Which famous Rocky quote is just of true of business as it is of boxing.2) Why a trade like bricklaying can literally take you anywhere in the world if you want it.3) And why it’s not always about what a successful business can do for you, but what it enables you to do for others. In today’s episode, I talk business with Ian Hodgkinson. After being inspired by his father in his younger years, Ian finished school at 15 and wasted no time in getting involved in the building trade with aspirations of one day being able to build his own house. For the next two years he immersed himself in his work, perfecting his skills and mastering his craft when at the age of 18, as well as being one of the youngest ever lecturers at South East Derbyshire College, he decided to go it alone and became a self-employed builder.Over the next three decades, Ian and his team worked hard to build an incredibly successful business which is on track to build 180 houses this year, has many impressive one-off projects under its belt, has been a regular feature on reality TV shows like DIY SOS and scrap kings and has also been involved in some fantastic charity projects that have made a real difference to the community. As Ian so poetically puts it, this is the story of the bricklayer who got to meet the Queen. This was another brilliant interview with an inspirational entrepreneur who demonstrates what can happen when you work hard, have a positive attitude and take full advantage of the opportunities that life presents. You know, success leaves footprints...So, let’s take a walk with a businessman that will leave a lasting legacy not just with the houses he builds, but with the opportunities he creates for the people within his business and the communities he serves – Ian Hodgkinson.

Naomi Cleaver is an interior designer, writer, TV presenter and keynote speaker As you’ll hear in the Podcast I’ve know Naomi for quite some time.  In the late 1990’s she launched Echo Design Agency, which represented amongst others David Adjaye and Olympic torch designers Barber Osgerby and not least…….my old company Forster Inc. While running Echo Naomi began presenting prime time television shows, such as Grand Design’s: Trade Secrets, Other People’s Houses and was the designer on DIY SOS. She shifted into running her own design studio (https://naomicleaver.com/) and her award-winning design work on iQ Shoreditch in 2012 established her ability and she’s been specialising in communal living – Student Accommodation, Co-Living, Co-working, Build to Rent, Later Life and Hotel design ever since. She’s been described as being “responsible for introducing professional interior design to the student housing sector” and Naomi’s work has been described as “warm, eccentric ... clever, idiosyncratic”  by Grand Designs Magazine;  and “dramatic, witty and just a little bit racy” by Elle Decoration. Really, I promise. I do TRY and talk about other football clubs but, somehow, the complete shit-stormory of Manchester United somehow always draws me back in... and for that you have Jose Mourinho to thank. There is more drama right now at Old Trafford than your average episode of Eastenders and as much pent up anger as a Phil Mitchell meltdown. Although you wouldn't know it when you listened to the big man who is saying all the right things... even when it comes to the tensions between Jose and Paul Pogba.   "Couldn't be happier with Paul Pogba"   I mean he's SAYING all the right things he's just clearly not MEANING all the right things.   Maybe football managers just don't understand the emotion "Happy". Certainly it seemed to be something that Pep Guardiola struggled with last season.   Maybe something is getting lost in translation somewhere and these foreign managers don't actually understand what happy means. Could they think it actually is another word for miserable? Or lonely? or suffering from a terrible existential crisis?   Or maybe its just not a very "footbally" word is it. DELIGHTED with the win. BUZZING for the boys. THRILLED to be joining the club but "Happy"... nah, doesn't fit does it.   You'd think that if he was REALLY happy with Pogba he'd have congratulated him on his World Cup winners medal rather than publicly used his excellent showing on the world stage to suggest he maybe wasn't giving his all for the boys in Red wouldn't you... at least he hasn't had a go at his haircut yet, he can leave that to Graeme Souness's weekly whinge.   Really Jose should just be happy that his team has somewhere to play football right now because Mauricio Pochettino can't say the same!   Tottenham Hotspur now know what anyone who has ever worked with a builder before knows... predicted costs and times of work carried out bare as much resemblance to reality as the picture of a Big Mac on the McDonalds drive through menu does to the soggy, sweaty lump of a sandwich that gets shoved through the drive-thru window 10mins before closing time.   With virtually no grasp on the concept of irony Spurs have chosen the same week in which they announced their lucrative new deal with "official timing partner" Swiss watchmakers IWC Schaffhausen they have also revealed that the opening of White Hart Lane the sequel has been postponed again... presumably because everyone was too busy trying to copy that weird celebration thing that Dele Alli did with his hand last weekend?   Not such a bad thing you'd think as they'll just up sticks and play down the local park instead... or Wembley or something.   However, with the NFL rolling into town in a few weeks to play in the national stadium it DOES leave the club potentially homeless for their up-coming match against Manchester City.   Time to call in the big boys. "This week on DIY SOS we lend a helping hand to Daniel who has been forced to stay with neighbours for over a year now after his ambitious plans for home improvements over-ran.   And It took a turn for the worst for Daniel last week when Jack from Birmingham let him down at the last minute leaving him very short of manpower....
