As lockdown kicked in and TV series around the world halted production, it looked like it would be a long time before we’d see any new comedy on our screens. But this Sunday on RTE One at 10:35, the first Irish comedy about the lockdown, made during lockdown will be on our screens, and our Dermot is starring in it! The brainchild of James Cotter, Socially Distant is completely self-shot by the actors and uses video messages, group chats and all of those things that we’ve all come to know and love. Socially Distant tells the story of a dysfunctional family trying to arrange a surprise birthday party during the onset of the coronavirus crisis. Our Dermot plays Dave (we know, we know) and also stars Oliver Callan, Mary McEvoy, Eric Lalor, Bernard Casey, Camille Lucy Ross and Karen Kelly. The show was made in April, at the height of lockdown and in an incredibly challenging environment with the actors having to become all-in-one cinematographers, sound-ops and stylists all while working with people they might not have even met before. Writer and director James Cotter and star Dermot Whelan joined & Dave this morning to chat about bags of props being stolen and directing from the toilet! Next Monday and Tuesday night, Irish people at home and abroad will be tuning into RTE ONE television to watch the annual Rose of Tralee 2015. Daithi O'Sé joined Dave in studio this morning giving us an insight into the festival.
With sad news on RTE One.
There's a continuity presenter in Orr – Tee – Eee that really really gets up my goat. Yep, you know the one. Most major things on RTE One are at 9.35. For some reason, RTE have given the job of announcing these things to Ross O'Carroll Kelly's little sister. Her perky shiny-happy-people south county Dublin voiceover smugly slots into most voiceovers we hear these days on the national broadcaster. Does anyone else out there in TV-land hear how annoying, how patronising, how thoroughly smug that faux cheer is? She peaks with the way she says ‘thurty-foive ‘and I for one and coming close to putting a boot through the box. Come on RTE, it's bad enough you regard Miriam O'Callaghan and Sean O'Rourke as the big guns of your A Team, but I for one have had enough of this Private Benjamin. Give us all a break, mix it up and if a show is on at 9.35, there's no need to say it like you've just bought a new gúna and are showing it to the girls during a sleep over. Gen-uine-ly.
