For some time now, Irish DJ and producer Sunil Sharpe has been honing (no pun intended) his skills as a formidable floor destroyer, putting out a string of memorable burners for the likes of Works The Long Nights, BPitch, MORD or his own imprint, Earwiggle. Delivering his implacable two-hour missive through blends of breaks-laden rhythms, frenzied machine talk and murky, weatherbeaten ambiences, Sunil Sharpe boggles the mind and knocks senses askew, not letting loose on his astonished prey - understand the odd raver bracing themselves for the blast incoming. Unless they've already bashed their skull in the system's facade and got to taste the visceral high of sound flowing through their body. You think it's an image, but the man is a literalist.

Our next premiere of the day features Irish DJ and producer BALMR with his track “Paths Unknown” featuring on Sofa Movements Records. The track is as introspectively deep-house as one can imagine. Drawing clear experience from Detroit which makes for top-tier listening. Get dug into this! Raised on the seemingly ingrained House sound of Cork and its heavy influence by renowned and revered House heads Fish Go Deep and their Sweat Nights at the legendary Sir Henry's Club it was an inevitable progression for BALMR to follow the path of producer and DJ. In his own words: ‘It was difficult to escape the sound of House Music growing up in Cork'. Over the past decade, BALMR's released material on Nordic Trax, Kolour Detroit, Expanded Records and more, while hosting his own Down Right Deep Show on Deep House Radio. Here, presenting his new latest collection of works, ‘Paths Unknown' sees BALMR captures moments in time and individual journeys to paths previously undiscovered. BALMR always had a personal love for the Detroit sound, particularly artists like Norm Talley, Mike Huckaby, Delano Smith, Moodymann and so on, which naturally lead him to his production journey. He has had numerous releases and remixes in his catalogue as well as working on mixing for other artists on labels like Yore. He is also one of half of the duo ‘Southbounds Sounds', having recently featured as a guest on Lars Behrenroths DSOH show. As well as this stunning release, BALMR has several other upcoming projects this year, including 2 vinyl-only releases with one on ‘Selections Label' out of Toronto featuring a remix from Glenn Davis, and another on Deeper Groove with his fellow collaboration partner Deep Excavations, featuring a remix from John Daly. Honing in on his latest bit of production material, ‘Paths Unknown' opens the flip side, as the composition dives deep and back into immersive and airy realms through subtly nuanced textures, resonant synth licks and snaking bass grooves. Dreamy atmospheres can be heard throughout this composition which is utterly filled with warmth and depth throughout. The day Christy died, I decided not to repost this podcast. I went for a podcast based on a celebratory chat we had about music. But things have changed. I am now reposting this podcast because Dave Fanning, an Irish DJ, seems to have suggested on RTE radio that Christy may have been lying about the link between rape at a young age and drug addiction later in life. It would have been better had Fanning remained silent. Here Christy Dignam tells me the truth, a truth I would never contest, about the black hole in his soul.

Who is also an Irish DJ, producer and designer who is originally from Clare but is now based in Boston. Both artists have come together in creating a musical project that sees both artists delve into sounds reminiscent of trance, techno, rave and breaks respectively. Our premiere today is a collaborative production between OKAY and Bianca Project, with their track titled 'System 9' being the result of a larger collaborative project carried out remotely between Edinburgh, Galway, Clare, Sydney and Boston over the last year. During this time, this enabled the pair to refine their sound both in person and online while back and forth on their travels. OKAY, who may be best known for running Galway-based club nights Verve, who has brought a flurry of acts like Long Island Sound, Yasmin Gardezi, Holly Lester, Pagan, Prozak and more to the west of Ireland in recent times. Additionally, OKAY carries out a range of graphic and video design artwork under his design moniker Hybrid Energy. Bianca Project is an Irish producer, DJ and designer from Clare currently based in Boston. His production style takes notable influence and inspiration from the early 90s rave era, with a heavy emphasis on the utilisation of hardware from the time. His debut release last year titled '96 Mirage' saw him blend 90s piano breaks with hardcore percussive elements, making it indistinguishable from tracks of that time. System 9 is Padraic's first release of 2023, as he prepares for his debut EP which is due to be released in the near future. System 9 is a track bursting with influences of trance, techno, rave and breaks throughout, as OKAY and Bianca Project join forces in creating a sensual track filled with rousing melodies, trembling low-end and a hint of nostalgia that makes this quite the buzzy listen. This week's entry to the Local Selection welcomes Ventolin to the series. The Irish DJ and producer is now based in Haarlem in the Netherlands, where he has provided us with a sensational recording that encapsulates his compelling mixing style. This recording, in particular, includes several unreleased Ventolin cuts throughout too, for good measure. Ventolin acts as our latest entry to the Local Selection Mix Series, acting as the latest entry he has gifted us with a fantastic recording that is carefully crafted, showcasing a range of techno selections that draw from his own signature taste. This inspiration is partially drawn from his father too, as the recording focuses on grooving techno elements alongside broken jungle elements which makes for a fresher, more unique listen overall. This shift in taste comes from spending some time travelling across Europe which lead Ventolin to uncover various styles and sounds rooted in dance music. Not to mention a number of appearances on Ghent's Radio Ruit and Brussels' Kiosk Radio in the process. All while releasing a range of material from as far back as 2020. Ventolin has released a wealth of self-released tracks during this time as well as numerous other musical projects with Planetaria Barcelona, Seven Twelve, Reboot Records, SPEED, Filth Inc and more. This mix does a brilliant job at encapsulating Ventolin's current taste musically, as he includes a range of tracks from artists and labels he's digging at the moment as well as some older cuts a bit closer to him that he feels like he can drop at any given time. Expect to hear tracks from Lars Huismann, Decadence, Almir Ljusa, and Chontane as well as some unreleased from Ventolin himself. Dig in. 'Breathin' is yet another showcase of Tyvion's impeccable production skills. Meshing emotion with clever sound design that encapsulates a truly raw feeling, that draws the listener even deeper into his moving productions. The melody in this case drives the track as it gels with the vocal of Ariana ever so well. This is fantastic listening from start to finish. We've got some fresh new music from Fuinneamh Festival founder Lucas. The revered producer is known for his powerful and deep cuts, finding inspiration in dub chords, deep pads and textured atmospheres. His track ‘Cosmic Background' is an atmospheric trip through wandering chords and deep soundscapes. Luke Reddy aka ‘LUCAS has been producing electronic music and DJing since 2011. Luke's early years as an artist were not your run of the mill, first cutting his teeth performing at his own events which took place in the forest, open air events and raves, deep in the Wicklow mountains, these legendary parties became known as the ‘Keep Her Lit' series. Lucas disappeared somewhat off the DJ radar in 2015, when his ambitious plans for Fuinneamh Festival year one began, but with DJ sets in the summer of 2019 at EP, Body & Soul and at Fuinneamh we saw Lucas make a resurgence into the Irish DJ scene once again. Lucas founded a new record label ‘Ogma' in 2021 and it started with a E.P. with himself and Snakebite 616 the release received huge international and local support from the likes of Freddy K, Ed Davenport aka Inland, Elad Magdasi, Cici, Cailín, Mylo Spykers, Jon Hester, Taint, Aeron, Diarmaid O'Meara and more. The label will return for it's second release this summer. Lucas has provided a deep and driving techno masterpiece. This reminds me of some classic ‘Function' releases, but has Lucas's own spin on it. A big pounding kick plays of deep and whirling atmosphere, as drifting chords provide an entrancing kind of melody. This is a proper techno. Annie's been in the news a bit recently, because after 17 years as one of BBC Radio 1's most loved DJs, she has left the station, and the video of her playing her final song went viral online, I think simply because she is such a legend in the industry, and a big part of the lives of so many music lovers, so this farewell was a huge deal. We talk about how she became a DJ and presenter, and her illustrious career and what that involved - and then her travel diaries chapters are all focussed on destinations across Ireland - the place where she grew up, travels back to as much as she can, and knows so well. And then later, I'm joined by travel writer and Ireland expert, Aoife O'Riordain who shares some really brilliant tips, in particular some amazing foodie recommendations and a hotel that I'd never heard, on an Irish island that I'd also never heard of, of that has gone straight to the top of my hotel wish list. We premiere a track from Irish DJ and producer Mercer today, as he releases his track 'Rock Tha Party' with Scottish label, Milkit Sounds as part of their NEIGH WORRIES VA 02. Milkit Sounds is a Scottish independent brand, homegrown in the capital of the Highlands in Inverness, while also being based in the idyllic surroundings of the capital of Scotland, Edinburgh. Perfectly timed with the opening of the UK nightlife industry, the fifth release on the Milkit label provides a VA compilation of club-ready & emotional cuts. With a focus on breaks and rave nostalgia, the release comprises of works from exclusively Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish artists. A previous contributor to the label and new resident for Milkit, Mercer joins up with the team once again for his second release on the label. Originally from Belfast, the now Edinburgh based producer has been into music since day dot. From growing up learning the piano at a young age and ripping tunes off Limewire and YouTube back in the day, Mercer's taste varies massively. Once able to head to nightclubs, his taste in dance music really came to the fore, developing a taste for the culture from frequenting Edinburgh venues Cab Vol and Sneaky Pete's. More recently, he has found himself delving more into the UK sounds such as breakbeat and garage. In terms of inspirations here, you're looking at the likes of Maruwa, Desert Sound Colony and L Major. In addition to his more signature breakbeat style, Mercer incorporates a healthy dose of electro vibes to this record. Heavily featuring the classic 808 sounds, the release layers chopped up break samples, satisfyingly discordant synth lines with a driving bass lead and an array of perfectly placed soundbites and sonic elements. The track we premier today features heavy break, with the addition of a hip-house-style vocal that ties the together with a ravey twist. Hailing from the small town of Portarlington, Laois, LOU is a 23-year-old Irish DJ & producer, who like most, began his DJ career playing locally, running club nights and parties in his hometown, while playing raves and club nights across the Midlands. Upon arriving in NCAD for college in Dublin, he went on to create the NCADJ Society with fellow rave confederate Lorcan Rush, throwing regular 'anything goes' parties on campus and across venues in Dublin. This helped open the door for him to start playing solo at club nights in the city and beyond, featuring in spaces such as Hangar (R.I.P), Wigwam, Berlin D2, Button Factory and The Grand Social where he appeared alongside the likes of Or:la, Saoirse, Cromby & Long Island Sound to name just a few. 3 years ago, LOU made the decision to venture into production, using his spare time from college work to get to grips with Ableton. In December of 2019 he began releasing music and since the pandemic hit he has been using the lockdowns to hone in on his craft, experimenting with different styles and learning new techniques. His most recent productions have been of a house and breakbeat nature, taking influence from productions of the 90's and the more euphoric sounding modern day releases. A well established name on the Irish clubbing scene, Døc’s first real experience of dance music happened after he snuck into a nightclub at the tender age of fifteen, instantly falling in love with the tunes, atmosphere and vibes, Doherty promised himself that one day he would return to the club, Privilege, Longford, as a DJ. He then devoted himself to achieving that goal and eventually enjoyed a very successful residency there. With over twenty year’s worth of experience behind the decks, it’s safe to say that Døc is an artist who has truly mastered his craft. Based in Sligo, the home to clubbing in the the west of Ireland, Døc has been controlling crowds in the region with his genre hopping brand of deep, progressive and techy basslines for well over a decade, never failing to lift the energy in a room and create an atmosphere that keeps people coming back and begging for more. Having played in many of Ireland’s biggest and most popular venues, Døc has played a number of international shows, most notably at the Warehouse Project London, Sankeys Ibiza, Eden Ibiza and HI Ibiza, supporting the likes of Danny Howells, Clive Henry and Alex Arnout in the process. Døc’s music has received support from some real heavy hitters in the industry, including Nick Warren, one of the world’s best known progressive DJs. Døc currently holds a number of local and international residencies, including slots at Spiral Tree, Longford and appearances with Circle Experience in London and Ibiza. He also often plays guest slots with some of Ireland’s leading club brands in venues up and down the country. With a regular podcast series, Døc-Cast and Døc's Picks, which now has over twenty episodes, it is evident that Doherty is one of the hardest working DJs currently on the Irish scene, and one that is set to be here for many years to come. ꜜ Free Download ꜜ - Link Soon - ALL EPISODES: https://soundcloud.com/estorsjkebar/sets/estorsjke-bar-series IN ITUNES: https://podcasts.apple.com/ru/podcast/estorsjke-bar/id1320512703 Cover Art © John Hoar

In Hour 1 we welcome back Taraval celebrating the release of his new EP 'Aardvark', which is out on Four Tet's Text Records today. The title track has been whipping festivals and dance floors into a frenzy all summer long when played by the likes of Four Tet, Daphni, Floating Points amongst others, getting many Track ID requests and features in this mix. The San Francisco based producer also has a background as a band member in Caribou. He told us; "Always exciting to get to mix for Solid Steel. This one features a lot of music I’ve discovered and loved in 2018, plus a couple of tracks from my Aardvark EP on Text Records out on Oct 19. I recorded this live at Crowbar Corner studios, a new and very inspiring place in San Francisco I share with a bunch of artists. It starts off in an aquatic groove then shifts into some psych-y techno then dissolves into some American drones and tones old and new." Irish DJ, producer, and host of the Alchemy Radio podcast series, John Gibbons, joins us for his second Good Vibrations appearance. John last guested in May 2013, when he reported that there were subtle indicators of manipulation in the upper levels of the electronic dance music scene. Two years on, he says, the calling cards are blatant for those with the eyes to see. The same occult symbols that have been permeating the hip-hop and pop music worlds are now cropping up in this genre, suggesting that it is now firmly in the sights of those that wish to hijack its household names for mass mind controlling purposes. We discuss the apparent 'recruitment' of certain big names in dance music who, after years of organic growth, seem to be suddenly and miraculously elevated to colossal levels of success, as well as the new young names, who appear from seemingly nowhere. We also get into the bizarre trend of big-name DJs now starting to receive extremely dubious 'honours' like knighthoods and MBEs. John shares some of his insights as a music producer into how sound itself can be used to affect human mood and emotion and to shape perceptions - particularly that of a digital/ electronic nature, which can interact with the energy field of the human body on an unseen level. We also cover symbols as a method of marketing, particularly with relevance to the big dance music festivals, and the power that DJs hold over massive numbers of people at such gatherings. The chat finishes by reflecting on the so-called second Summer Of Love of 1988 - the Acid House/ rave movement and the arrival of massive quantities of Ecstacy which gave rise to the global dance music scene we see today. We examine the parallels between this and the LSD-laden Summer of 1967, and question whether both could have been Establishment-sponsored movements.
