We discuss their debut album, “Three Lefts Make a Right” and go into their creative process and how they came together while studying at Oberlin College.  Throughout the interview, we play extended excerpts of the songs from “Three Lefts Make a Right” and delve into various topics, such as the challenges and triumphs of being young musicians, the democratic nature of the band, their exploration of free improvisation, and the importance of gendering in music. Personal trainer, Dominic Munnelly, is back to answer more of your fitness and gym questions on this week’s episode of the Real Health podcast with me Karl Henry. Dominic is one of Ireland’s leading personal trainers and when he was on the show two months ago he had so much information to give I had to invite him back on again and to answer more of your health and fitness questions. Dominic covers the importance of mobility, strength and conditioning in that order but also says that mental health trumps physical health every time, so make sure you’re also living a balanced life in terms of food, sleep and stress. Plus, what are some of the most common mistakes being made by the average gym goer? Dominic answers your questions about fat loss and the truth behind calorie reduction whilst exercising and again emphasises lifestyle first and foremost. “We’re looking for the smartest way to train in the most sustainable manner that is true today and will still be true in five years’ time,” he explains. Dominic also opens up about going out on his own (‘burning your ship’) and building up his training business in the early years, to revealing what his favourite treat meals and snacks are. Did you know about the eating plan that says you can stay in great shape physically and mentally while still enjoying delicious food? According to dietitian and author of Mediterranean Mood Food, Paula Mee, we can have it both ways and she joined me on this week’s episode of the Real Health podcast to discuss the recipes, science and habits behind the Mediterranean style diet. It may be well established that you can reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, cancer and diabetes with Mediterranean foods, now new evidence suggests that this pattern of eating also reduces the risk of depression, substantially. Inspired by this new research, dietitian Paula Mee discusses the healthy eating plan based on the Mediterranean diet that is rich in healthy fats, wholegrain, unrefined carbs, and proteins. If you want to stay fit and healthy both physically and mentally while enjoying good food then Paula’s advice will I’m sure go a long way. 30 day personal health and fitness challenges are becoming more and more popular as it’s a great way to push yourself every day to get into a healthy habit and on this week’s Real Health podcast, I speak to SpinFM presenter, impersonator extraordinaire and social media influencer, Doireann Garrihy, who is in the middle of her own 20 day challenge. “I’m a sporadic exerciser,” she says. “I go through bouts of being really into it and then fall off the wagon and do nothing for six weeks. But with a holiday coming up, I needed to force myself to do it. Even thirty days seemed too big so I decided to go for twenty days of exercise instead!” Listen to the full interview to get Doireann’s three tips for having a healthy and positive engagement with social media as well as finding out her wind down routine and what she really thinks about some of the so-called ‘fitspos’. This week it’s a world exclusive as U2’s Adam Clayton sits down with me to discuss all things health and fitness in the world’s biggest band. It’s a fascinating interview with insights you rarely hear from within U2 and it was a real pleasure to be able to interview Adam to find out about his health and fitness regime as U2 finish up the North American leg of their eXPERIENCE + iNNOCENCE Tour. Speaking about the physical challenges performing to thousands of fans every night, Adam told me what he faces. “It's a bit of a surprise how something that you never even used to think about, you now have to manage… Now I feel it… Holding an instrument for those 2 ½ hours, I know that my shoulder and back and neck all need work…" "They get a bit seized up and that's just an occupational hazard to be managed. There is a point where you shouldn't really be able to do this at this level, but with modern medicine and physio techniques, you can really keep on doing it." It might be a far cry from the rock n roll image, but health – both mental and physical - and fitness is a vital part of Adam’s lifestyle these days, especially when he is on the road with the band. Once the current tour ends in Dublin in November, there will be time though for reflection for Adam and the band on 2019 and beyond. “This is the end of a four-year cycle of work and we really have no plans going into next year. We have got to the point where this is a full stop at the end of this project. We're looking at next year as being a year of regrouping.” For more, go to: www.independent.ie/podcasts/the-real-health-podcast/ You can also contact me with any health and fitness questions on realhealth@independent.ie or on Twitter @KarlHenryPT The Real Health podcast with Karl Henry is in association with Laya Healthcare.

On this week’s show, Karl is going to be putting you to sleep – well, hopefully not in the next thirty minutes or so, but if you’re having trouble getting a good night’s rest, Karl speaks to sleep disorder expert, Deirdre McSwiney for the solutions and science behind sleep problems. “20% of the population suffers from insomnia at some point in their lives,” explains Deirdre. “Tired but wired is a major factor with modern society.” Also joining Karl on the show is Paul de Loughry, a long-time sleep sufferer who says his biggest problem is waking up between 2-3am and staring at the ceiling for hours not being able to get back to sleep. “You need to set aside a period in the evening after dinner and use a few minutes to write down your thoughts about the day and dump it,” explains Deirdre. “Get them down on paper and forget about it. You have to make your bedroom an oasis of peace.” So, don’t forget, the three key tips for effective sleeping: - Look at the environment in your bedroom making sure it is cool and dark with all screens out of room - Lifestyle: no caffeine after 5pm and make sure you exercise - Brain dump after dinner time, reflecting on your day and preparing for the next day ahead and leave it there on the paper in the kitchen Contact Karl with any health and fitness questions on realhealth@independent.ie or on Twitter @KarlHenryPT.
