The UUP's fortunes, or at least its leader's, had been rising in the polls – but now the party is sinking into civil war. Its former leader Doug Beattie has quit the party and has launched a blistering assault on current leader Jon Burrows – even saying he “regretted” ever persuading Burrows to join the party. Mr Beattie resigned from the UUP at the weekend, accusing former PSNI man Burrows of a “vindictive attempt” to oust him. Mr Burrows has yet to comment publicly. Meanwhile, reports suggest he doesn't have the support of the party's Stormont MLAs The Belfast Telegraph's Political Editor Suzanne Breen broke the story that Doug Beattie was set to leave the party. Right now, Australia is agog that One Nation is the highest-polling party and talk has turned to Pauline Hanson as Prime Minister. Former Queensland Premier Peter Beattie, who beat One Nation back in the 1990s, has issued a warning: confusing One Nation with the people who vote for it is a serious mistake. He argues many One Nation supporters are decent, hard-working Australians who feel ignored by the major parties. They're anxious about rising living costs, job security and how AI will reshape the workforce. Sound familiar? At heart, they believe Australia is heading in the wrong direction and no one in power is listening. Beattie says One Nation has tapped into these fears with a powerful scare campaign, blaming immigration for everything from housing prices to electricity costs. However, he argues the party remains “a party of complaint” - offering anger rather than solutions. He then lays out what the major parties must do to win back trust: deliver a clear, skills-based immigration policy; explain the benefits of multiculturalism; paint a genuine vision for Australia in 2050; prepare workers for an AI-driven economy; back innovation in key industries; invest seriously in regional infrastructure; and provide meaningful, ongoing cost-of-living relief - not one-off handouts. Doesn't that sound good? Wouldn't you like that here? In fact, it's advice that could easily be applied here - and heard by our mainstream parties - as supporters drift towards the Māori Party, ACT and New Zealand First, which are also, in many ways, parties of complaint. About the episodeIn this episode, Kellie sits down with Tim Beattie, founder of Stellafai and a consultant who has spent his career turning outcome-based thinking from a philosophy into a practical reality. Together they explore what it truly means to lead with an outcome mindset, why visualising work unlocks shared understanding and how leaders can protect their teams from relentless organisational pressure while keeping themselves human in the process. Honest and complete with practical ideas you can use tomorrow.Key TakeawaysThe outcome mindset in three words: clarity, intent, impact. When everyone knows why they're doing what they're doing and can see the difference it's making, work changes completely.A North Star needs a North Star metric. Aligning on direction is powerful. Agreeing on the single measure that tells you whether you're moving towards it is where real focus begins.Get it out of people's heads. Whether it's sticky notes, digital walls or a bowl of mood marbles, making thinking visible is one of the most underrated leadership practices there is. Shared understanding is the foundation of shared progress. The push-pull umbrella. A leader's most important job is protecting teams from the pressure pushing down from above. Creating the space for autonomy, mastery and purpose to exist. Most bad cultures aren't born of bad intent. People are promoted because they're brilliant at their jobs not because they've been developed as leaders. Changing culture starts with showing people what's possible.Silos are inevitable; enablement is the antidote. As organisations grow, someone needs to be focused on connecting the dots, breaking down communication gaps and keeping everyone aligned to what actually matters.About TimTim Beattie is the Co-Founder of Stellafai, where he is building an operating system for outcome-based consulting. His work focuses on helping consulting, customer success and professional services teams anchor their work around measurable customer outcomes, visualise value and create stronger alignment between teams, clients and business impact.Tim's career has taken him through large-scale consulting and transformation roles at PwC, Deloitte, IBM and Red Hat, as well as smaller boutique consulting environments where culture, collaboration and customer value became central to his thinking. He is passionate about outcome mindset, visualising work, psychological safety and helping organisations move from activity and output to clarity, intent and impact.Through Stellafai, Tim now works with boutique consultancies and enterprise customer success organisations to help them prove, scale and sustain the value they create with customers.

Use What Works! Carl and Richard talk to Dylan Beattie about the Use What Works movement, encouraging developers to use well-maintained open-source projects available today rather than rolling their own. Dylan explains how folks go down a path of believing a library is simple until they learn enough to realize that every bit of software is more complicated than they realize. And the less code you own, the happier and more productive you are. Adding AI to the mix only makes it clearer: you need some stability in development. If you're changing every layer of code, you'll spend even more time and frustration chasing problems. Make getting results easier - use what works!

Pet cats are good at catching and hunting wild animals, but there's been concerns raised over what this means for the safety of our native fauna. It's good for pet cats to roam, but growing awareness of the devastating impact they can have on our wildlife means owners need to take more responsibility, according to experts. Veterinarians for Animal Welfare Aotearoa managing director Dr Helen Beattie says it's difficult to keep a pet cat confined to the home and it's important to keep them safe. She explained it's worth looking into a cat-proof fence to ensure they can't get too far. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Good morning. They say that religion and politics don't mix, but it's impossible to separate the two when the Pope and the American President have gone head-to-head over the war in Iran. In a social media post, President Trump accused Pope Leo of being weak and advised that he should “focus on being a Great Pope, not a Politician”. Pope Leo responded by insisting that he's not a politician, but that the message of the Gospel, “‘Blessed are the peacemakers', is a message that the world needs to hear today”. This confrontation has catapulted the Pope onto the front pages of the world's media, but he's not the first modern pope to speak out against war. In 2003, when then Cardinal Ratzinger, later Pope Benedict XVI, was asked to comment on the Iraq war, he said that “There were not sufficient reasons to unleash a war against Iraq.” He went on to ask “if it is still licit to admit the very existence of a ‘just war'.” St Augustine gave a Christian interpretation to the idea of the just war in the early 5th century. He argued that, terrible though war always is, it is sometimes necessary to defend the innocent and preserve peace. However, it must seek the future well-being of the enemy, and be free from the lust for power or desire to dominate. These ideas were developed by St Thomas Aquinas in the 13th century, and they continued to shape western politics and international law long after Christianity ceased to be a major political influence. However ineffectual it might sometimes have become in the heat of battle, just war theory provided a restraining influence on the waging of war, especially with regard to the need to avoid the intentional targeting of non-combatants. Today, the nature of modern weapons and the bombing of densely populated areas means that civilian casualties, including children, usually far outnumber military deaths. This is the context in which the Catholic Church's opposition to war must be interpreted. Pope Leo is continuing a tradition set by all modern popes since the 1960s. In his Palm Sunday address, he quoted the prophet Isaiah when he said that Jesus “does not listen to the prayers of those who wage war, but rejects them, saying: ‘Even though you make many prayers, I will not listen: your hands are full of blood'.” This is religious language, but it holds politicians accountable for shedding innocent blood. How could it do otherwise, when Christians worship a crucified God?

In July 1911, Louise Beattie was found mortally wounded after a late-night drive outside Richmond, Virginia, and her husband insisted a stranger had stepped from the darkness and fired the fatal shot. But the story he told began to crack almost as soon as investigators looked more closely at the road, the evidence, and the life he had been hiding. What followed was a murder case filled with scandal, deception, and testimony that gripped the nation. Permit on a floating fly? Don't you need to fish heavy flies that get right to the bottom, where permit feed? Sometimes, but over the past decade permit anglers have discovered that permit eat crabs on the surface, and if you've spent enough time on salt water you will see crabs swimming along the surface. Fishing floating crabs make a lot of sense as you'll learn when you listen to this podcast with film maker and permit angler RA Beattie [27:05]. In the Fly Box this week, we have some questions that might solve problems you have had, including: I have trouble with my fly wallet, either losing flies or tearing out the fleece. Is this a matter of user error? Should I apply flotant to foam flies and flies with deer and elk hair, or will they float by themselves? Do jig nymphs harm smaller trout? If I use large beads on my nymphs, will they inhibit hooking qualities? I have trouble with my line tangling when striper fishing. Do you have any tips? Do featherwing streamers offer any advantages? Why do people fish streamers smaller that a size 10 and when is it best to use them? The hooks on my bonefish flies keep breaking . Why is this happening?

Episode SummaryIn this episode of Million Dollar Flip Flops, Rodric sits down with Tim Beattie — founder of Stellafai, former consultant, transformation expert, and a thoughtful voice on the intersection of AI, coaching, consulting, and measurable outcomes. After spending more than two decades inside major consulting firms and boutique advisory businesses, Tim saw the same problem again and again: too much waste, too little clarity, and not nearly enough focus on outcomes that actually matter. What followed was a journey into rethinking how coaches, consultants, and professional services firms deliver value. Instead of centering engagements around time, activity, or vague deliverables, Tim is focused on helping experts anchor everything around real outcomes, measurable progress, and longer-lasting impact.Rodric and Tim dig into where AI can genuinely support transformation work, where it still falls short, and why human connection, facilitation, trust, and community may become even more valuable in the years ahead. This is a conversation about technology, yes — but more than that, it's about people, change, coaching, energy, and what really creates lasting transformation. In this episode, you'll hear:Tim's journey from traditional consulting to building StellafaiWhy most consulting and coaching engagements waste too much time and moneyWhy outcomes should anchor every client engagementThe difference between information and actual transformationHow AI can amplify coaching instead of replacing itWhy facilitation, trust, and emotional safety matter so muchThe growing importance of community in an AI-driven worldWhy coaches may need to become more “in your pocket” than “once-a-month”What Tim believes truly drives impact and meaningful changeHighlights & Timestamps[00:00] A vision for AI in coaching and consulting Tim explains how AI could become a powerful amplifier for learning and coaching — if it is built on the right human foundation.[01:00] Meet Tim Beattie Tim introduces himself as a “recovering consultant” and shares his background across big consulting firms, boutique advisory businesses, and transformation work.[02:00] Why consulting needs to evolve Tim talks about the inefficiencies, waste, and money hemorrhage he saw in traditional consulting — and why he went searching for a better model.[03:00] Outcomes before everything else Tim explains why every coaching or consulting engagement has to start with the client's actual problem, desired outcome, and measurable progress.[04:00] Rodric on AI, humanity, and soft skills Rodric shares how a late-night AI rabbit hole sparked bigger questions about emotion, humanity, and why community may matter more than ever going forward.[05:00] What AI still cannot replace Tim breaks down the invisible energy inside a great room: trust, safety, facilitation, and the human magic of shared conversation.[07:00] Why community is becoming more valuable Rodric talks about his coaching groups and why real builders sharing openly in a trusted room creates value no AI tool can replicate.[09:00] Inspiration vs transformation Tim shares why a great keynote or coaching session can inspire people — but sustained change requires a different layer of support.[11:00] The “coach in your pocket” idea Tim explains why modern coaching and consulting may need to become more flexible, more available, and more embedded in real life.[14:00] What Stellafai actually is Tim walks through the meaning behind Stellafai, how the company started, and how it helps teams and consultants connect work to measurable outcomes.[17:00] Rodric's message about Million Dollar Flip Flops Rodric shares a brief message about the book, the framework, and the mission behind SASLA.[19:00] Who Stellafai serves today Tim explains how the platform supports coaches, consultants, and professional services organizations that want to modernize how they deliver value.[20:00] Where to find Tim Tim shares where people can connect with him, use the platform, and book time.[21:00] A question for the next guest Tim asks what measure someone would put in place on day one of their career to know whether that career would be successful.[21:00] What would you do if you knew you couldn't fail? Tim gives a thoughtful answer about learning, pushing limits, and why testing boundaries is how real growth happens.[22:00] What really motivates Tim Tim closes with a powerful reflection on what drives him: helping people thrive in measurable, meaningful ways.Notable Quotes“If we can feed and build brains and brain cells based on the learning and the conversations and the journey that clients go on with great facilitation and great coaching, then I think an AI model can actually really help amplify and continue to leverage that learning.” – Tim Beattie“It's not about the knowledge, it's not about the script, it's not about the low-level detail. It's about how you feel.” – Tim Beattie“The information that comes out of collaborative sessions and conversations from communities, that is the thing that fuels everything when it comes to change.” – Tim Beattie“I don't think AI can replace it.” – Tim Beattie“Inspiration is one thing. Actioning the change is another.” – Tim Beattie“What motivates me? Seeing people thrive in a really measurable and impactful way.” – Tim BeattieConnect with Tim

What if consulting contracts rewarded results instead of hours worked? Tim Beattie, CEO of Stella and former Red Hat executive, is pioneering exactly that approach. In this conversation, Beattie breaks down the emerging consulting model that's replacing traditional project-based work. Subscription engagements provide clients ongoing access to expertise while creating predictable revenue streams. Asynchronous coaching through recorded videos scales impact beyond billable hours. AI tools amplify consultant knowledge without replacing human connection.

In this episode of the XS Noize Podcast, Mark Millar sits down with Callum Beattie to talk about a pivotal moment in his career and his forthcoming album INDI, released January 23rd. After landing two consecutive #1 albums on the Scottish Albums Chart, breaking into the UK Albums Chart with 2023's Vandals, clocking up over 50 million streams, and selling more than 100,000 tickets in Scotland, Callum Beattie's rise has been steady, earned, and unmistakable. That journey reached a major milestone with his sold-out headline show at Glasgow's OVO Hydro, his biggest to date. INDI is his most personal record so far. The album explores inner conflict, self-reflection, and the search for real connection, written with a clarity that comes from trusting instinct rather than chasing expectation. Produced by Joe Cross (Courteeners, The LaFontaines, Louis Tomlinson), the record pairs direct, honest songwriting with a stripped-back confidence that lets the songs breathe. The Hydro show underlined just how far Callum has come, with The Scotsman describing him as "a Caledonian Sam Fender." Rather than a peak moment, it feels like a line drawn — with 2026 set to scale things even further, including a headline show at Edinburgh Castle and a headline slot at Belladrum Tartan Heart Festival. In this conversation, Callum talks openly about writing INDI, the mindset behind the songs, and what it means to arrive at a point where ambition, vulnerability, and belief finally meet. A calm, honest conversation with an artist stepping into his stride. Listen to Mark Millar's in-depth interview with Callum Beattie now on the XS Noize Podcast. This is a Grave Talks CLASSIC EPISODE! High above St. Joseph, Missouri, stands a mansion too proud — and too haunted — to ever die. Built in 1854 by Armstrong Beattie, a five-time mayor and banker, and his wife Eliza, the Beattie Mansion has seen everything from elegance to sorrow. Over the years, it became a refuge for the homeless, orphans, and the elderly — but many believe some of its guests never truly checked out. Today, the mansion's long history still echoes through its halls — in whispers, footsteps, and cold spots that appear out of nowhere. Armstrong and Eliza's spirits are said to linger, forever watching over their home like spectral landlords. Contractors hired to work on the building often don't last long. Tools vanish. Doors slam. And unseen hands seem to make their disapproval known. For nearly 170 years, the Beattie Mansion has been a monument to both Missouri's history and its hauntings — a place where the past is still very much alive. Join us as we sit down with current owner Michael Burkart, who's experienced firsthand what it's like to live — and work — alongside the dead. Some houses have history. This one has residents. In This Episode In this episode of Systems Simplified, Adi Klevit speaks with Megan Beattie about the systems that power sustainable lead generation. Megan shares her journey from 17-year-old telemarketer to industry-leading consultant, revealing how she scaled companies without relying on inbound leads or aggregators. Adi highlights Megan's innovative, can-do attitude—one that replaces excuses with systems and turns data into sales opportunities. Together, they discuss how mindset and process go hand in hand. Megan explains why business owners must build systems that extract value from every lead, whether new or old. She and Adi break down how to design CRM processes, categorize leads effectively, and create re-engagement cadences that reignite interest long after initial contact. Finally, the conversation explores talent systems—how to train and develop people into high-performing team members. Megan details her philosophy of hiring for character and training for skill, showing how consistent systems remove dependency on "unicorn hires" and empower businesses to grow predictably.
Conventional wisdom is that safeguarding humanity from the worst biological risks — microbes optimised to kill as many as possible — is difficult bordering on impossible, making bioweapons humanity's single greatest vulnerability. Andrew Snyder-Beattie thinks conventional wisdom could be wrong.Andrew's job at Open Philanthropy is to spend hundreds of millions of dollars to protect as much of humanity as possible in the worst-case scenarios — those with fatality rates near 100% and the collapse of technological civilisation a live possibility.Video, full transcript, and links to learn more: https://80k.info/asbAs Andrew lays out, there are several ways this could happen, including:A national bioweapons programme gone wrong, in particular Russia or North KoreaAI advances making it easier for terrorists or a rogue AI to release highly engineered pathogensMirror bacteria that can evade the immune systems of not only humans, but many animals and potentially plants as wellMost efforts to combat these extreme biorisks have focused on either prevention or new high-tech countermeasures. But prevention may well fail, and high-tech approaches can't scale to protect billions when, with no sane people willing to leave their home, we're just weeks from economic collapse. So Andrew and his biosecurity research team at Open Philanthropy have been seeking an alternative approach. They're proposing a four-stage plan using simple technology that could save most people, and is cheap enough it can be prepared without government support. Andrew is hiring for a range of roles to make it happen — from manufacturing and logistics experts to global health specialists to policymakers and other ambitious entrepreneurs — as well as programme associates to join Open Philanthropy's biosecurity team (apply by October 20!).Fundamentally, organisms so small have no way to penetrate physical barriers or shield themselves from UV, heat, or chemical poisons. We now know how to make highly effective ‘elastomeric' face masks that cost $10, can sit in storage for 20 years, and can be used for six months straight without changing the filter. Any rich country could trivially stockpile enough to cover all essential workers.People can't wear masks 24/7, but fortunately propylene glycol — already found in vapes and smoke machines — is astonishingly good at killing microbes in the air. And, being a common chemical input, industry already produces enough of the stuff to cover every indoor space we need at all times.Add to this the wastewater monitoring and metagenomic sequencing that will detect the most dangerous pathogens before they have a chance to wreak havoc, and we might just buy ourselves enough time to develop the cure we'll need to come out alive.Has everyone been wrong, and biology is actually defence dominant rather than offence dominant? Is this plan crazy — or so crazy it just might work? That's what host Rob Wiblin and Andrew Snyder-Beattie explore in this in-depth conversation. What did you think of the episode? https://forms.gle/66Hw5spgnV3eVWXa6Chapters:Cold open (00:00:00)Who's Andrew Snyder-Beattie?
