Mike Potter and Ale Sharpton are on a mission to bring craft beer to minority communities, and to bring those communities to craft beer Most of the 9,000+ craft breweries across the US are white-owned businesses with predominantly white clientele.  There's nothing inherently wrong with that, and that doesn't automatically mean anyone is excluded.  But, having representation of your community in anything can make you feel much more included.  And that's where Ale and Mike come in.  Mike Potter was one of the founders of Fresh Fest, America's first black craft beer festival.  Since then he's founded Black Brew Culture to focus on the beer, culture, food, and lifestyle of craft beer.  This month he'll kick off Blacktoberfest, a multi-city celebration of beer, food, art and entertainment. Ale Sharpton has been a Friend of the Show since we launched.  He's joined us to talk about his adventures and articles as well as introducing us to Leaders of the Brew School.  You may have seen Ale's writings for Thrillist, Craft Beer & Brewing, Forbes, and many others. His collaboration stout brewed with New Belgium, Piano Keys, is coming back soon for another release as well as some exciting events at the Great American Beer Festival.  Proceeds from the brew benefit his non-profit, BrewGether.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

While Ale is a beer writer slash expert slash critic slash personality, Mike is also the founder of Black Brew Culture slash Fresh Fest slash Blacktoberfest. The gang will follow the rise of Black craft breweries as well as the details of Ale's and Mike's individual projects serving as steps on that ladder. The episode kicks off with a catch-up session with Ale and his journey in the Piano Keys World — his collaboration with New Belgium. He also gives us a peek into the growth of Atlanta's beer scene through legislation and minority brewing movements. We then get to meet Mike and two outstanding brewers from Blacktoberfest — Dirtbag Ale's Tito and Beale Street Brewing Company's Kelvin — along with their paths on the craft beer way and what they are brewing for this upcoming Blacktober. Additionally, we'll also dive into an analysis of the ups and downs of the Black beer scene in U.S.'s Southern cities, before coming back to Ale's efforts to shine light on the small guys. After the break, we'll come back with Kelvin's private session with his exclusive trivias and stories on Elvis. Jimmy attempts to make his endings consistent by going around the room asking people their favorite beers for the week, before Mike closes out with details about Blacktoberfest (October 1st in St. Louis, 15th in Atlanta, and 22nd in Durham). Bringing Diversity to the Beer Industry and Beyond

SESSION SUMMARY: We've made some tremendous steps forward in our world. And, at the same time, there are still areas where we fall short. Unfortunately, we still live in a society where racism, sexism, and other epidemics plague our day to day lives and real humans battle through this hate in search of a more peaceful existence.Without question, the beer industry is a world that has seen a true lack of diversity as the popularity of this adult beverage, and culture, has boomed. Primarily, the beer industry consists of white males in the roles of sales, ownership, and production. But as time has gone on, women have joined the beer industry and made a tremendous impact on the growth and evolution and beer. Likewise, minorities have also become part of the revolution, forever proving the beer industry does not need to be dominated by one sex or one race to be relevant. In Pittsburgh, Mike Potter of Black Brew Culture - an online magazine covering diversity in the beer industry - Day Bracey, and Ed Bailey - comedians and co-hosts of the Drinking Partners Podcast - joined forces to celebrate diversity and bring a "fresh" perspective to the industry with the inaugural Fresh Fest Beer Fest in August of 2018. The event struck a chord not only with beer industry professionals, but enthusiasts, media, and other minority-owned businesses as well - making it a wild success that had everyone anticipating what this trio would bring together next.In August of 2019, Fresh Fest is back for Round 2 and Day and Mike took some time out of their busy schedule to rap about this year's event on the Breaking Brews Podcast. In this episode, we learn about Day and Mike's journey through the craft beer landscape, how they, along with Ed, came up with Fresh Fest, and what they say to the person who calls Fresh Fest a "racist beer fest." In addition, Day, Mike, and Jason talk about existing oppression in today's society. The trio's vision for Fresh Fest was to combat those stigmas as much as possible, all while delivering an immersive experience that brings businesses from all walks of life together to celebrate the camaraderie the beer industry inspires. You can learn more about Fresh Fest, connect with social media platforms, and secure your tickets to what promises to be one of the best events of the year at freshfestbeerfest.com.To catch up on the Drinking Partners Podcast, click:Website | Facebook | Instagram | TwitterCheck out Black Brew Culture:Website | Facebook | Instagram | Twitter MUSIC CREDIT: All music in this episode of the Breaking Brews Podcast is courtesy of purple-planet.comEVENT ALERT: Grab your tickets to Hot Glass, Cold Beer, Pink Boots

Share your ideas with us on twitter and instagram. Beer #2: Stillwater Artisanal Ales - Nutropic IPA with Mango and Passionfruit (6%) Sour feel but not actually a sour. Interesting feel and light drinking. Alex researched Stillwater. They don't have their own brewery but they brew on other people's systems and can through a Brooklyn establishment who cans and distributes their beer. They're very in touch with their social media as well, and we love them. Lustra Day! - The line was INSANE! 400+ people in line before 9 am. The line shares were flowing and Dancing Gnome was on their game! They took care of everyone and they had a surprise tapping of Black Clouds Breakfast which was amazing! Each beer was incredible and worth the time spent in line and the bar was moving smoothly and everyone seemed to be in great spirits. We discussed our disgust with line jumpers again. We picked up Urban Evidence from Hitchhiker after Lustra Day and it is a killer DIPA. Alex worked at The 13th Annual North Country Brewfest pouring wine. He got to hangout with a bunch of local, mostly western PA breweries. His favorite of the day was Missing Link from Ellwood City, PA - Tropical Mist IPA Beer #3: Voodoo Brewing - Unicorn Farts NE IPA (8.2%) This one doesn't really have enough flavor for as sought after as it was. Its smooth but not a lot of flavor to really keep you interested. We'll be focusing on segments next week and some more broad beer topics with some research done. East End Brewing Company’s head brewer Brendan Benson joins the Drinking Partners and Black Brew Culture’s Mike Potter in this lead up interview to Fresh Fest Beer Festival. From a discussion on how Mr. Benson got his start on as a college student working for Rolling Rock to how Mike Potter first linked up with East End, the opening conversation is full of interest and information. Craft drinkers will be particularly interested in Mr. Benson’s take on the rise of IPAs and the evolution of brewing to the currently popular hazy variation. After an analysis of the waves and trends of brewing, the men discuss what might be the next big thing. East End will be producing a dry, “anti-haze” beer for Fresh Fest in their attempts at a Brut IPA. When Mike chimes in his dislike for Session Ales, Ed reminds him, “With all your facial hair, of course you don’t.” To wrap up the interview, Ed asks Brendan about their Bigger Hop. “How did you bigger the big?” In the true Drinking Partners spirit, Ed pauses himself. Listen until the end to hear spoilers for Fresh Fest as Mike explains the festival and hints at his beer collaboration with East End. For tickets to Fresh Fest, visit https://freshfestbeerfest.com.

#112 Drinking Partners Podcast- Day Bracey and Ed Bailey Talk about Fresh Fest             Some of my absolute favorite comedians and friends to talk to are back on my show. If you listened to the episode already, you probably heard me snorting from Ed Bailey and Day Bracey, hosts of The Drinking Partners Podcast. We are all Epicast family, so we have been frequent guests on each other's shows from time to time. What can I say, we like each other's company... and beer. Speaking of beer, these guys love to chat about the craft brewing industry. Trends, reviews, with comedy thrown in between. They are hosting a new concept, first in the nation to be exact called The Fresh Fest which is geared towards men of color in the beer industry. Let's face it, when craft brewing exploded, it was a white man's game. Now everyone is dipping in their toes, or full fledge cannonballing into the industry, and I fucking love it. Hell, I even make beer as a past time, and received mixed reviews when I first showed up to meetings. It is nice to know the diversity is happening, and that is what Ed and Day are bringing to the Burgh. Fresh Fest is pulling black brewers from across the country to represent here in the Burgh. Drinking Partners collaborated with Black Brew Culture to make this event happen, and it is sure to be an awesome time. Don't miss grabbing your tickets to the event on August 11th at Nova Place! Also, these cats just recorded some audio for the Smithsonian! What? Could NOT wait to talk to them about that, and they judged Viceland out in California. That is just too cool. You will also catch us bitching about technology in the modern world, Ed's fashion style, and a ton more we had to catch up on. We are also giving away a free ticket to Fresh Fest!
