It's all about Michigan beer on this episode of Behind the Mitten, with guests both old and new joining us to talk about what's happening at our breweries and beyond. We start off interviewing one of the most exciting and prolific women in the Michigan craft beer scene, the always interesting Annette May. She holds many titles, but she might be most proud of having achieved certified Advanced Cicerone status, a pretty cool thing and not easy to do. She is also an instructor at Schoolcraft College in their brewing program, and one of the founding members of the women's craft beverage collective Fermenta, which is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit trade group initiated by women, committed to education, networking, diversity, and empowerment within the fermented beverage and food industries. She and her husband Mike Bardallis are working towards opening their own brewery, Full Measure Brewing Company, in Detroit's Eastern Market soon. One of our regular guests, David "Rings" Ringler stops by to catch us up on what is happening at his two German-inspired breweries located in West Michigan. Cedar Springs Brewing Company is where you'll find two sides to both the food and beer menus, both American and German. Indulge in traditional dishes like jagerschnitzel and spatzle, or pub-favorites like house-smoked pulled pork. You'll find the same beers here that you'll see at Kusterer Brauhaus on the West Side of Grand Rapids. Here, you'll find a tradtional German beer hall, with snacks and soccer to enjoy. We love his traditional style beers, including the always lovely Marzen. Now my mouth is watering.Pigeon Hill Brewing Company in Muskegon just celebrated their ten year anniversary in 2024, and co-owner Michael Brower stops by to share some of their recent developments. The brewery now has two locations you can visit, the Brewer's Lounge taproom located on 4th Street right downtown, and the new Socibowl by Pigeon Hill. Socibowl is an entertainment complex right downtown that features duckpin bowling, darts, pinball, oversized yard games, food, and of course, plenty of great craft beer. Michael shares some new and old favorite beers from Pigeon Hill, which you can find in distribution throughout the state. We are always excited when we get to meet new friends, and the owners of Elder Piper Beer and Cider did not disappoint. Trace and Eeva Redmond opened their Petoskey brewery in 2023, and were quickly named a "brewery to watch" by a national publication. The Redmonds bring years of top-level brewing experience with them, both here in Michigan and nationwide. When it came time to open their very own brewery, they decided to head back to Eeva's hometown, where they have been met with open arms. The Redmond's picked their Beach Grass Helles Lager as our selection for BEER OF THE WEEK this show.
durée : 00:16:06 - L'invité d'un jour dans le monde - Depuis la chute de Bachar al Asaad, la reconstruction de la Syrie demeure incertaine. Stefan did some travelling over the holidays. He made it to Vienna, and of course, he picked up some beers. While you can find lots of great beers in Austria, you can't find a lot of craft beer. Fear not, he was able to find an incredible marzen from Bierschmiede. Werkstruk is a 5.2% ABV marzen that makes us sad we can't drink it all year round. We jump into the Bavarian region with one of our favorite breweries Schlenkerla. Their smoked beers are always a treat. Erle is a schwarzbier. A smoked black lager is just what we need! #beer #craftbeer #drinks #marzen #schwarzbier
Chris Davison and Bill Koeppen join us as we drink and discuss a variety of beer styles featuring smoked malts. In the first half of the episode we sample homebrewed versions of the Polish Grodziskie and the German Lichtenhainer, as well as Bill's gold medal winning Smoked Helles. Then we shift our focus to the homeland of smoked beers, Bamberg, with three different Schlenkerla beers, the Marzen, Urbock, and Doppelbock. Along the way we discuss the history of these unusual styles, the flavors imparted by different woods, and offer up some tips for brewing these styles.

The boys drink and review Lord Maltimore, a Marzen from Key Brewing Company, then discuss the state of the election and their predictions. Pigweed starts off ripping Kamala as a phony with no talent and little brains. Crowhill says she's mean and vapid. She slept her way to the top and has no idea what she's doing. No one is voting for Harris. They're voting against Trump. Harris gets three groups. (1) The "not Trump" vote. (2) The "it's time for a black woman" vote. (3) The "pull the D lever" vote. In addition, Harris has the media, Hollywood, the arts, academia, and the entrenched bureaucrats all pulling for her. Is that enough to win? The polls don't look that way. Trump has a slight edge nationally and seems to be winning in enough states to become president. P&C recount some of Trump's failings, but believe he's still the man for the hour.
Shiner Oktoberfest 2024 is a Marzen beer by style. Here in Shiner, TX (pop. 2,070), we're suckers for tradition. Which is why this classic Oktoberfest brew is made with the highest quality two-row barley, Munich and caramel malts, along with German grown Hallertau Tradition and Hersbrucker hops. It's our way of honoring our ancestors and the beer they loved to celebrate with.. This craft beer is 5.7% ABV. In this craft beer review, we will take a look at the color, smell, and taste.
Fall is our favourite beer time of the year, and while in 2023 we did a deep dive into all things pumpkin ales, in 2024, we switched it up and dove super deep into Fest Biers! Cee and Nate picked up every Fest Bier available at the LCBO (the provincial liquor store in Ontario for those outside of the region) and ran through them while getting into the BJCP definitions of both Fest Biers and Märzens, the epic history of Fest Biers dating back to 1810 in Munich, Germany, all of the nuances that make Fest Biers so special and how they differ from Märzens, and they even wrapped it up with some legendary German Fest Biers for a true comparison. Here's the list of beers that you can grab yourself at most LCBOs in the province: Wellington Festbier Oktoberfest Lager, Samuel Adams October Fest, Left Field Mr. Oktober FestBier, Creemore Oktoberfest Celebratory Lager, Muskoka Stein Sized Fest Bier, Stockyard Festbier, Anderson Craft Ales FestBier, Paulaner Oktoberfest Bier, and Hofbräu Oktoberfestbier. This was a ripper - get some Fest Biers in ya! BAOS Podcast Subscribe to the podcast on YouTube | Website | Theme tune: Cee - BrewHeads
The boys discuss the origins of the Oktoberfest custom, then drink and review a couple Oktoberfest beers. They discuss and explain the differences between three different styles: Marzen, Oktoberfest, and Festbier. In Germany, only 6 breweries are allowed to brew authentic Oktoberfest beer. The boys drink an authentic Oktoberfest beer from Hacker-Pschorr and an American Oktoberfest beer from Sam Adams. The German Oktoberfest beers have moved more towards the "festbier" style, which is less intense and less malty than a Marzen. American Oktoberfest beers generally stick with the Marzen style. In general, the German Oktoberfest beers are going to be a little lighter in body and alcohol than the American versions.

Join us as we embark on a transformative journey with Ralf Marzen, a clinical psychologist and trauma therapist. Listen in as Ralf unfolds the pivotal experiences that shifted his perspective from separation to a sense of oneness with the world. As we navigate through our personal narratives of healing, we explore the continuous process of awakening and how an expanding consciousness allows us to address deeper layers of dissatisfaction and trauma. We consider healing not just an individual endeavor but one that also involves the collective and ancestral dimensions. Embrace the idea that challenges are opportunities presented by the universe, or our deeper selves, for further growth toward heart-centered living. This chapter is an invitation to reflect on how our own healing journey can be a beacon for others, and how embracing these challenges is crucial for our evolution. We invite you to connect with Ralf's teachings, as they offer guidance toward a more integrated, spiritual life—a quest we are all on together, aimed at the discovery of our truest selves and a more enlightened existence. Yes. We're still finishing Sharktoberfest. In December. And now that the Oktoberfest season is long over, we sample a fantastic Marzen-style brew in Paulaner's Oktoberfest Bier and pair it with Blind Waters; a Tubi original produced by the Asylum and written and directed by the creator of Sharknado (It's like a Legion of Doom of shark movies). It's a movie about a couple that gets stranded and has to deal with the most powerful shark in cinema. Oh, and one of them gets blinded but also isn't really blind at all. And there's a murderer. We also talk about the Red Green Show. There's a lot going on in this episode.
Merry Christmas from Bret, Dave & Kevin! Sign of the Horse Brewery Season 3 Episode 16 Bret and Dave had the pleasure to host Brad Wilson and Matt Moore, two of the co-owners, from Sign of the Horse Brewery in Hanover, PA and Red Lion, Pa. Even Thomas Jefferson visited to have a pint. They have actually three locations, their first on York Street, a traditional beirhaus on the square in Hanover and their newest location in Red Lion, PA. It is a very interesting story that you need to see for yourself. from Brad's corporate background to Matt's homebrewing days, they have created a must visit place and grab a pint or two for yourself. They brought along a Pale Ale, IPA and a Marzen for us to try. We can't wait to visit them and try some more and we recommend you do the same! So we have rectified that in this episode and we sit down with brewer Steve Woertendyke, just ahead of their Oktoberfest celebration, so we can intentionally sample the Oktoberfest offerings. Very impressed with the Marzen and the Smoked Marzen, plus the full liter steins are all sure to make the day a great success. Are you ready for an extra long Oktoberfest? The official Oktoberfest celebration in Munich is 18 days long this year, an extra 2 days over the typical 16 to include German Unity Day.If you're celebrating in America that doesn't matter because we start celebrating in September and run all the way through October, and sometimes November. Because if there's a drinking holiday we're going to stretch it out as long as we can.To get the party started we headed to Der Biergarten in Atlanta for the firs day of Oktoberfest. The celebration included a whole roasted pig, an official "first" keg tapping, oompah music, and plenty of beer.We talked with Austin Edwards, head brewer at STATS Brewpub (STATS and Der Biergarten are both part of the Legacy Ventures family) and Jay Toxey, the Southeast Regional Manager for Paulaner USA. We enjoyed Paulaner's Festbier and Marzen and STATS Oktoberfest during the festivities. In keeping with tradition we learn a bit about Oktoberfest - fun facts, stats, and trivia, and about the beer served at Munich's festival. If you're in Atlanta and looking for some great German beer and food to celebrate then head to Der Biergarten, get you a liter of bier, and party on.And if you haven't listened yet, be sure to check out our 6th Annual Oktoberfest Blind Beer Tasting! Thanks for listening to Beer Guys Radio! We're so busy festin' this year that we had to do an extra episode to work in our annual Oktoberfest blind beer tasting. But, we're dedicated so we made it happen. We (OK, Brian) grabbed 5 German and 5 American takes on the the Festbier and Marzen styles and we blind tasted them and picked our favorites. In keeping with tradition we had some big, soft pretzels (praise be to QT) and some brats, and a bit of fish dip. We enjoyed these before and after tasting so we didn't mess up our delicate palates, and had some plain crackers and coffee to clear out our taste and smell. As always, this was a fun show to do. Hard to argue with drinking through some great Oktoberfest beers. There were some definite surprises this year, and a few that performed as expected. In this episode Bob and I talk about yet another great lager style beer. This week it is the American/International Amber lager. A widely available, sessionable craft beer style that showcases both malt and hops. Amber lagers are a medium-bodied lager with a toasty or caramel-like malt character. Hop bitterness can range from very low to medium-high. Brewers may use decoction mash and dry-hopping to achieve advanced flavors. Style examples: Examples of this style: 1. Rhinegeist Brewery – Antelope 2. Dos Equis – Amber 3. Terrestrial Brewing - Erie Dusk ABV: 4.5-6.0% IBUs: 8-25 Color: 6-14 Serving Temp: For darker lagers, like Vienna-style, Oktoberfest or Marzen-style lagers, and amber lagers, you'll want to go slightly warmer, in the 45 to 50 range. Stronger lagers, like a dunkel or doppelbock, would do well at 50. Serving Pressure: 10-14 PSI Drink representative selection of the week: GLBC Eliot Ness Amber Lager 6.1% and 27 IBU. Beer as described by brewer: Admittedly, it's a bit of a paradox to name our Amber Lager for history's most famous agent of prohibition. But it's a smooth, malty (and dare we say, arresting?) paradox. Support the show by doing your Amazon shopping through our affiliate link. When we think about beer and brewing, it's easy for our minds to wander toward the person making the beer we drink. Brewers create a little bit of magic combining art and science, and because of that, are often considered the backbone to a business that makes and sells beer. Sometimes, they can even be thought of as rock stars with engaging personalities and thoughtful approaches to what it means to make beer. But there are so many more people we may miss when we think about beer as an industry. In this conversation, we're chatting with Kindsey Bernhard, director of hospitality for Austin Beerworks, and also a background of all sorts of skills and expertise. Kindsey has worked as a bartender and before her role with Austin Beerworks, was taproom manager for Hi-Wire Brewing's location in Louisville, Kentucky. She's also a peer in media, having written for Porch Drinking and hosting her own podcast, Boys Are From Marzen, which showcases women and non-binary people who work in beer. When we connected, Kindsey had just recently moved to Austin to begin her latest job, so you'll hear about what it's like to transplant as part of pursuing new career goals and what's caught her eye as a new resident of Austin, Texas. We'll also talk about the variety of skills she's learned and displayed as a person working in beer and how her passion for the industry has driven her to better understand career goals and finding balance in her life. Kindsey is one of many amazing people working for a brewery who doesn't make the beer, and I hope you'll come away from this chat with an appreciation for her and the behind-the-scenes effort she embodies.
Mike Potter and Ale Sharpton are on a mission to bring craft beer to minority communities, and to bring those communities to craft beer Most of the 9,000+ craft breweries across the US are white-owned businesses with predominantly white clientele. There's nothing inherently wrong with that, and that doesn't automatically mean anyone is excluded. But, having representation of your community in anything can make you feel much more included. And that's where Ale and Mike come in. Mike Potter was one of the founders of Fresh Fest, America's first black craft beer festival. Since then he's founded Black Brew Culture to focus on the beer, culture, food, and lifestyle of craft beer. This month he'll kick off Blacktoberfest, a multi-city celebration of beer, food, art and entertainment. Ale Sharpton has been a Friend of the Show since we launched. He's joined us to talk about his adventures and articles as well as introducing us to Leaders of the Brew School. You may have seen Ale's writings for Thrillist, Craft Beer & Brewing, Forbes, and many others. His collaboration stout brewed with New Belgium, Piano Keys, is coming back soon for another release as well as some exciting events at the Great American Beer Festival. Proceeds from the brew benefit his non-profit, BrewGether.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
We're joined this week by @HeaterAllenBeer head brewer and the brewery's heir apparent, Lisa Allen! We get into Lisa's background in the wine world and the decision to switch beverages and work for her Father's brewery; Heater Allen's approach to making and love for Marzen; the pros and cons of wet hops in a lager brewery; and, naturally, true crime. @Lisa_Loves_Lagers, we loved talking to her, and you're sure to love hearin' it — available NOW, wherever fining-free audio is found!
