Mike Potter and Ale Sharpton are on a mission to bring craft beer to minority communities, and to bring those communities to craft beer Most of the 9,000+ craft breweries across the US are white-owned businesses with predominantly white clientele. There's nothing inherently wrong with that, and that doesn't automatically mean anyone is excluded. But, having representation of your community in anything can make you feel much more included. And that's where Ale and Mike come in. Mike Potter was one of the founders of Fresh Fest, America's first black craft beer festival. Since then he's founded Black Brew Culture to focus on the beer, culture, food, and lifestyle of craft beer. This month he'll kick off Blacktoberfest, a multi-city celebration of beer, food, art and entertainment. Ale Sharpton has been a Friend of the Show since we launched. He's joined us to talk about his adventures and articles as well as introducing us to Leaders of the Brew School. You may have seen Ale's writings for Thrillist, Craft Beer & Brewing, Forbes, and many others. His collaboration stout brewed with New Belgium, Piano Keys, is coming back soon for another release as well as some exciting events at the Great American Beer Festival. Proceeds from the brew benefit his non-profit, BrewGether.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
This week on Beer Sessions Radio, Jimmy drives down South for an exclusive talk with the influencers of the Black craft beer movement — Ale Sharpton and Mike Potter. While Ale is a beer writer slash expert slash critic slash personality, Mike is also the founder of Black Brew Culture slash Fresh Fest slash Blacktoberfest. The gang will follow the rise of Black craft breweries as well as the details of Ale's and Mike's individual projects serving as steps on that ladder. The episode kicks off with a catch-up session with Ale and his journey in the Piano Keys World — his collaboration with New Belgium. He also gives us a peek into the growth of Atlanta's beer scene through legislation and minority brewing movements. We then get to meet Mike and two outstanding brewers from Blacktoberfest — Dirtbag Ale's Tito and Beale Street Brewing Company's Kelvin — along with their paths on the craft beer way and what they are brewing for this upcoming Blacktober. Additionally, we'll also dive into an analysis of the ups and downs of the Black beer scene in U.S.'s Southern cities, before coming back to Ale's efforts to shine light on the small guys. After the break, we'll come back with Kelvin's private session with his exclusive trivias and stories on Elvis. Jimmy attempts to make his endings consistent by going around the room asking people their favorite beers for the week, before Mike closes out with details about Blacktoberfest (October 1st in St. Louis, 15th in Atlanta, and 22nd in Durham). Hop in the car and tune into our show while driving to Blacktober, Jimmy's waiting for you!Photo Courtesy of Ale Sharpton.Heritage Radio Network is a listener supported nonprofit podcast network. Day Bracey wants to empower the Black community through the beer industry. This is a year-round goal and the podcaster, comedian, and festival organizer does that every day all day. But next week in Pittsburgh he is hosting the Barrel and Flow Festival and will be able to put the goal front and center. It's the continuation of the Fresh Fest, which he founded with business partner and podcast co-host Ed Bailey and rebranded for a new year after some issues with the name and a chance in another business relationship. There is a lot of talk about diversity in the craft beer space. But talk is just that. Action is what is needed. After countless brewery visits and conversations Day has a pretty good idea on what needs to be done to bring meaningful change to the space. On this episode of "Drink Beer, Think Beer" he'll share his thoughts on the subject and the industry and he also talks about how the festival is coming together how it aims to create a welcoming space – something that some other festivals don't always offer. Fresh Fest, the first Black beer festival in the country, is moving online due to COVID-19. In this episode, we chat with co-founder Day Bracey about how the pivot to digital will allow more accessibility and how he believes that digital components will permanently change the events landscape long after coronavirus. But what about a key aspect of this festival -- the beer collaborations? Bracey has organized some special four-packs that will be available for purchase, so you can drink along from the comfort of your couch. For $10, Fresh Fest Digi Fest promises 54 total hours of available programming, including cooking demos, panel discussions, and live music. By going digital, both presenters and attendees are not constrained by geography, and as such Bracey is excited about some international voices entering the mix. Plus, we highlight the Bike Match network, a nationwide program that is overseen locally by BikePGH, and we shoutout some diversity in the art community with the Spirit mural walls Black AF edition project slated for unveiling in Lawrenceville this summer. Today’s guest was one of our 2019 Signifiers: an annual list our writers compile, in which we honor people in the industry who have made a lasting impact through their work. Day Bracey is the co-founder of Fresh Fest, the first Black-culture-focused beer festival in the country. It’s also one of the best beer festivals in the country—period. Hosted in Pittsburgh for the last two years, Fresh Fest has become a shining light in the city for culture and inclusion. It’s also drawn attendees from all over the country, putting Pittsburgh on the craft beer map in a way none of its individual breweries could. This year, Bracey has working with the team to reinvent the festival amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, transitioning to an ambitious online platform of experiences for people that promises to foster a new kind of connectivity and community around the same premise. In the week following this interview, Day shared some news on his personal Facebook account about some challenges the festival is facing going forward, including a legal rift with his co-founder Mike Potter, who started the Black Beer Culture brand. That rift was unknown to me at the time, and it’s not part of this conversation. Any potential fallout from that is also unknown to me right now, and our Sightlines team is working on it as I record this intro. Regardless of that outcome, which could threaten to undermine the festival’s efforts, or even existence, this year, Day has publicly stated that he’s moving forward with the plans. The second part of the interview is about Day’s experiences in Pittsburgh as a Black man. We discuss the numerous protests in the city after the murder of George Floyd, the fight against rampant police brutality, and the Black Lives Matter movement. This experience includes some heartbreaking details. I consider this critical listening, regardless of how informed, or uninformed, you are on those issues. This is Day Bracey of Fresh Fest. Listen in.
