Episode page with video, transcript, and more My guest for Episode #234 of the My Favorite Mistake podcast is Jason Cercone, the host of “Solo Podcasting Simplified.” With nearly a decade of experience in the podcast world, Jason has built his brand around the consumptive power of storytelling and simplifying podcast initiatives. He helps results-driven business leaders and professionals create engaging, impactful solo podcasts – hosting, producing, or guesting on more than 1000 episodes. Jason shares his favorite mistake story about engaging too much with a Twitter troll when he had launched a craft beer blog… and why it was a mistake to start a podcast just to compete with this troll. In this episode, Jason also shares his unique journey – from an infatuation with radio broadcasting to his emergence as a podcast consultant, intent on helping business professionals capitalize on the power of solo podcasting. The episode uncovers Jason's first steps into the world of podcasting, characterized by critical learning experiences and a zeal that spiraled into a flourishing podcasting venture. Despite initial struggles and self-doubt, Jason's approach to convert every misstep into a solid stepping stone is remarkably inspiring. Venturing into the second half of our podcast, we gain a deep understanding of the holistic elements of creating a successful podcast. With lessons learned from a journey that began at the barstool of a noisy tavern, Jason emphasizes building podcasts with a purpose, concentrating on the value it delivers to listeners rather than chasing high download numbers. His unparalleled journey will certainly inspire you to consider looking beyond the vanity metrics and developing a value-driven content delivery approach in the dynamic world of podcasting. Listeners can join Jason on his website and set up a free 30-minute Discovery Session to learn more about how he can help them create and grow an engaging, impactful solo podcast. Or expect overnight success? Why are download numbers a “skewed vanity metric?” Podcasting mistakes? Format choice? Why should new, aspiring podcasters start by launching a solo podcast? Kristen Carder – I Have ADHD Podcast Being flexible with your format? Having some guests? New podcast coming soon? Re-branding a show Harnessing the Power of Solo Podcasting: Decoding Jason Cercone's Journey Podcast enthusiast Jason Cercone brings nearly a decade of experience in the burgeoning world of podcasting. Having built his personal brand around the impactful aspect of storytelling and the simplification of podcast marketing strategies, his mission as a podcast consultant is to help business leaders and other professionals harness the power of the solo podcast. Solo podcasts offer a more personal, exclusive experience to listeners compared to guest or co-hosted formats. The value in these solo podcasts is the direct connection between the host and their audience, creating a space for deeper insights, discussions, and impact. Cercone's journey into podcasting began during his years as a University of Pittsburgh student in Bradford, Pennsylvania. There, he stumbled upon a love for radio broadcasting, which later became the foundation of his podcasting career. In 2015, Cercone bravely pivoted from his communications journey into the beer industry, supporting the groundswell movement of small breweries through a craft beer advocacy blog. As an initiative to better connect beer consumers to local events, Cercone launched a mobile app, only to be met with criticism from a troll on Twitter. This adversarial interaction fueled him to step further into the podcast world, vowing to create a beer podcast superior to that of his online detractor. His first podcast attempt was held in a noisy bar during trivia night, with minimal preparation, planning or editing in place. As he admits, this was a misstep and did not immediately fulfill his objective of creating a standout podcast, yet it reignited his passion for audio content creation. Cercone's introduction to the podcast world was a steep learning curve, and he decided to take a break after a few episodes in order to develop his skills. With a focused goal to improve his podcasting skills, he spent a year and a half studying radio and television personalities, learning how to engage and connect with an audience effectively. Building a Podcast with Purpose: Moving Beyond the Vanity Metrics Upon his return to the podcasting world, Cercone was better prepared to create impactful content and help others navigate the realm of podcasting. A major factor he highlights when starting a podcast is understanding the why behind it. Rather than being lured by the allure of a high download count or focusing on swift monetization, the primary objective should be based on the value the podcast provides to its listeners. For business owners and professionals, podcasting facilitates direct communication with their audience. The power of the podcast is not necessarily in the number of downloads but in its ability to attract potential and support existing clients. A successful podcast is one that caters to its specific audience, maintaining a consistent delivery of valuable content. This nurtures a loyal listenership and can lead to broader customer attraction and brand advocacy. According to Cercone, there's no specific rule set or rigid format to podcasting. A podcast can feature guests if they bring value to the audience, even in a solo podcast format. He advises thinking outside the box when devising a podcast strategy, understanding that time constraints and download numbers should not be the ultimate measure of a podcast's success. The ultimate goal, he shares, is to focus on delivering value to the listeners and ensuring they walk away satisfied from each episode. The Mantra of Consistency: The Key Component of Successful Podcasting Expounding on Jason Cercone's insights into successful podcasting, one of the most critical aspects he highlighted was the importance of consistency. A podcast, irrespective of its format, should maintain regularity in the release of its episodes; a critical expectation from its audience. Listeners tend to form a routine around their favorite shows, usually fitting in the episodes into their day-to-day activities. Consuming podcast content becomes a ritual, whether during the morning workout, the drive to work, or even on daily walks. Cercone argues that consistency in episode release is everything, yet, it shouldn't stress out the podcaster. Determining a release frequency that aligns with available time and resources is crucial. Weekly, biweekly, or, in some cases, monthly releases can all work to create regularity for the audience. Going beyond a monthly release cycle could risk losing audience engagement, due to lack of enough content to keep them invested. The podcaster, according to Cercone, carries a responsibility to the audience. If they need a break, whether to revamp the content, refresh their creativity, or deal with other priorities, they should communicate this to their listeners candidly. Informing the audience about the hiatus and when they should expect new episodes helps ensure listeners continue anticipating new content. In the meantime, podcasters can encourage their listeners to explore previous unlistened episodes in the catalog. Speaking Directly to the Listener: Building Intimacy and Growth The power of podcasting lies in its personal and intimate approach to communication. When a podcast is streamed, it often finds its way directly to the listener's ear, establishing an intimate connection between the content creator and the listener. This level of engagement is significant in a world marked by fleeting attention spans, with listeners dedicating a portion of their time exclusively to the content of the podcast. Consequently, podcasters ought to understand that they communicate directly to one person- the listener. The primary focus should always be on enhancing the listener's experience. When the content resonates with individual listeners, the chances are that the podcast will begin to attract listeners with similar interests or challenges, thereby fostering growth. In his journey, Cercone also experienced a phase of rebranding his podcast to better align with his mission and the audience he intended to serve. This shift illustrates the need for flexibility and evolution to ensure the podcast remains valuable and relevant to a changing audience demographic or evolving mission themes. In the end, the primary determinants of a podcast's success go beyond download numbers or financial gains. The unique value it delivers to its audience, the intimate relationships it maintains with its listeners, and the consistency in delivering insightful content determine its ultimate success.

Podcast Therapy: Why Do People Love Podcasts So Much?

Pod Theory

The reasons why people love podcasts is pretty subjective. For starters, they could get attached to the host and tune in every episode just to hear what he or she has to say.Perhaps the podcast features valuable guests you don't want to miss.Maybe it's because every time they listen, they learn something new that can be implemented into their life on a personal or professional level.Hell, it could be because a podcast allows for an escape from their everyday life...even if for a few minutes. It could be any of these reasons or something completely different, but there's one common denominator that makes podcasts such an important part of people's lives:Podcasts are passive. That means podcasts can be consumed without one having their full attention dedicated to said consumption. You can put on a podcast and take a walk, get in a workout, make your morning or afternoon commute more enjoyable, even get some chores around the house completed. All while swinging to the sweet sounds of your favorite podcast content provider.Podcasts play a meaningful role in people's lives because they enjoy the content while partaking in something else they enjoy. Or, at the very least, a solid podcast can make the not-so-enjoyable moments a little bit easier to stomach. This is why you can't ignore bringing a podcast into your business practices. The connections you build are too powerful to forego. In this episode of Solo Podcasting Simplified, it's another installment of Podcast Therapy and, just like the title suggests, I'll be sharing why people love podcasts so much, as well as why you can't ignore building a podcast of your own based on that love affair.Click here for this episode's feature blog post, resources, and moreThank you for being part of the Solo Podcasting Simplified experience!Watch the video version of this episode on YouTubeSchedule a Podcast Clarity Session TodayLearn More About The Solo Podcaster's MastermindSchedule a Free Discovery Session with JasonTheme Music courtesy of Alex Grohl via pixabay.com

Having a podcast is great. The value it brings to your brand cannot be overlooked or ignored. The connection you build with current and potential clients is profound and each episode you publish provides further social proof that you're a true thought leader in your niche that people can learn from. You also have an amazing opportunity to connect with fellow like-minded professionals, thus amplifying your reach and expanding your network.A podcast serves as a consistent, reliable content distribution channel that allows you to effectively project your message to a targeted audience and communicate how you can help them achieve the transformation they seek. The content found within your podcast can be repurposed and utilized on other channels, such as websites, blogs, YouTube, and social media. This, in turn, fuels the growth of your brand presence and moves you closer to closing new business, thus fueling more growth, and so on, and so on.And when your podcast is of the solo variety (meaning you're the primary voice on the majority of episodes delivering value, wisdom, and transformative insight), listeners who resonate with your message will feel the impact from you...and you alone. Building a solo podcast directly related to your brand and leveraging the content you create to the fullest extent is going to provide you with a bona fide path to connectivity with current and potential customers the likes of which you've never experienced. That type of impact is impossible to exclude from your overall brand-building strategy. In Episode 012 of Solo Podcasting Simplified, I'm proud to share the mic with this podcast's first guest, the Marketing Closer herself, Mickey Anderson. Mickey is a wealth of knowledge on content strategy, marketing concepts, and how to best use solo content to position yourself as a resource your industry needs.Join Mickey and I for an in-depth conversation about:Solo podcast strategyHow to use solo content to position yourself as a thought leaderThe value a podcast adds to your brandThe importance of using your content to amplify your website presenceClick here for this episode's feature blog post, resources, and moreConnect with Mickey on her websiteThank you for being part of the Solo Podcasting Simplified experience!Watch the video version of this episode on YouTubeSchedule a Podcast Clarity Session TodayLearn More About The Solo Podcaster's MastermindSchedule a Free Discovery Session with JasonTheme Music courtesy of Alex Grohl via pixabay.com

Podcast Therapy: The Truth About Consistency In Podcasting Revealed

Consistency is vital to success in podcasting. The more consistent you are with content creation, actively communicating with listeners, and having compelling, captivating conversations with guests (when and if you feature guests), the more well-rounded podcaster you'll become. You'll also develop and hone skills that transfer to other aspects of your life, including but not limited to how you communicate with friends, colleagues, clients, and loved ones, and how you present your message on stage, on conference calls, and in virtual and in-person meetings. But consistency in podcasting doesn't just refer to a commitment to mastering your craft.Consistency is also about being there for your audience when you say you'll be. When you bring new content to your audience on a consistent basis, they will not only get more invested in the content you produce, but they'll begin working this content into their routine. For example, if you publish new episodes every Thursday, a loyal listener will use their time at the gym or on their morning commute to consume your latest release. They expect it. And when it's not there, they will find something else to fill the void. When that happens, you run the risk of losing that listener and it may be hard to get them back simply because they only have so many hours a week to dedicate to podcast consumption.Maintaining consistency will keep listeners in place and continue to establish a high level of trust with each of them. But it's also important to understand that consistency in podcasting does not mean you need to overextend yourself and let burnout creep into the equation.Episode 011 of Solo Podcasting Simplified features the next installment in the Podcast Therapy series and I'm revealing the truth about consistency in podcasting.Click here for this episode's feature blog post, resources, and moreThank you for being part of the Solo Podcasting Simplified experience!Watch the video version of this episode on YouTubeLearn More About The Solo Podcaster's MastermindSchedule a Free Discovery Session with JasonTheme Music courtesy of Alex Grohl via pixabay.com

Social media has woven itself into the fabric of society. At this point in time, is it even possible to imagine a world without it?The sheer connectivity networks like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, etc. have brought to our lives cannot be overlooked, overshadowed, or under-appreciated.I've been part of the social media vortex since the early 2000s since MySpace wasn't just a thing, it was the thing.Hell, if you go back into the late 90s (yes, I'm totally dating myself here), I was all over the trailblazing outlets like Yahoo! Chat, AOL Instant Messenger, and ICQ. Those platforms may not have been considered social "media," but they certainly served as a precursor to the far more cutting-edge, innovative networks we inhabit today.Over the years, I've leaned into social media heavily. From extolling its virtues through a small social media marketing company I operated with my best friend to once claiming you don't need a website if you have a strong social media presence on a podcast (crazy, right?) to leveraging it in a variety of ways both personally and professionally, social media has been a major part of my life.So why, after all this time and all this love for the world of social media, have I made the decision to break up with these platforms? In Episode 010 of Solo Podcasting Simplified, I share why I've made the decision to break up with social media and focus my attention where it can best serve you. Why do so many podcasters fail? There are a number of factors that can contribute to a podcaster pulling the plug on their show in the very early stages. Many times, new podcasters enter the fray with unrealistic expectations about podcasting being easy and the whole world showing up to listen just because a new episode was published. In addition, new podcasters often get fixated on download metrics and believe this is the only way to gauge success for their show.Sometimes, podcasters get overwhelmed with the amount of work it takes to manage and maintain a podcast, meaning they didn't properly plan time into their schedule to carry out the tasks of production, communication, and promotion. And in some instances, new podcast creators venture too far outside their zone of genius and try to create content that doesn't excite them or doesn't speak to their target audience, causing them to become disengaged, burnt out, and unhappy with the act of creating new content. These are just a few potential reasons why someone may abandon their podcast efforts......and each of these items could've been avoided if these creators took time to establish a winning mindset before they ever pressed record.Episode 008 of Solo Podcasting Simplified features your first dose of Podcast Therapy! The digital landscape you and I exist in today is filled with a plethora of answers and information as far as the eye can see. What's good about this is the fact that answers are always at our fingertips. What's bad is it can get incredibly difficult to filter through the minutia of content thrust upon us to find relevant information that resonates and brings game-changing wisdom into our lives. If you're a coach or consultant who's adding content to the mix in any capacity, it's incredibly important not to get lost in the aforementioned minutia and, instead, generate content that serves a specific purpose and connects with people when they intentionally search for it.Let's break that down...Simply posting a link to your most recent podcast episode, blog post, etc. on Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, etc. will do little to bring new listeners over to your show...as you may have experienced. With the sheer amount of content that's being spilled on to social media simultaneously, it can be next to impossible to even get your posts seen...let alone have them break someone free of their 'scroll hole' to listen to your podcast. But if you build content for a specific purpose that's aimed at a specific person looking to solve a specific problem AND you build it in a way that's SEO-friendly and easy to discover when intentional search is conducted, your chances of making a genuine connection and gaining a loyal follower/listener/viewer/reader increases dramatically. When you DO make connections on social media, your first step should be to move the conversation to a channel where you have more control (i.e., an email list). And you have a much better chance of making that happen if you give your new connection exactly what they're looking for. This can be accomplished with a solo podcast, but the philosophy of niching down, providing more focused content, and leaning into an area of specialization transcends the podcast medium and should be applied to everything you do.In Episode 007 of Solo Podcasting Simplified, I break down why getting laser-focused with your solo podcast content, as well as the products and services you provide your customers, will help you cut through the noise and stand out in a crowded digital landscape.Click here for this episode's feature blog post, resources, and moreThank you for being part of the Solo Podcasting Simplified experience!Watch the video version of this episode on YouTubeLearn More About The Solo Podcaster's MastermindSchedule a Free Discovery Session with JasonTheme Music courtesy of Alex Grohl via pixabay.com

The master mind principle cannot obtain where perfect harmony does not prevail.”According to The Success Alliance, mastermind groups offer a combination of brainstorming, education, peer accountability, and support to sharpen your business and personal skills. A mastermind group helps you and your mastermind group members achieve success. And there's nothing wrong with that. Perfection is boring. Mistakes aren't a bad thing...as long as you learn and grow from them. But too often in the podcast space, those common mistakes are ones that lead to creators throwing in the towel far too soon. They let mistakes derail their efforts and they bail before any true growth is felt or real breakthrough experienced. The numbers don't lie.According to a thread on Reddit:90% of podcasts don't get beyond the 3rd episodeTo be in the top 1% of podcasts in the world, you only need to publish 21 episodes of your podcastThose are scary statistics. But they're also reassuring statistics for podcasters like you who are ready to proceed with reasonable expectations and a strong plan of action for growth, consistency, and success. You may have heard people say the podcast medium is oversaturated or there are too many podcasts in their niche to stand out.But in reality, the number of podcasts producing new content consistently is a small fraction of the total number of podcasts listed. And, most importantly, no other podcast on the planet features your unique story, your unique perspective, and your unique way of making connections and bringing value to someone's life. While others are making mistakes and letting it deflate their ego, you're learning from yours and capitalizing on each one so your next production is poised to make you stand out.On Episode 004 of Solo Podcasting Simplified, I break down some of the most common podcasting mistakes creators make with their show. Solo Content vs. Guest Content: Which Approach Is Better?

Does solo podcast content trump guest-driven content? It's the great debate.Which form of content creation is better: solo-based content that keeps the spotlight firmly secured on you and your expertise or guest-driven content where impactful conversations captivate listeners?Saying one is BETTER than the other without context is pretty difficult because each approach serves a purpose. For example, if you're brand new to your industry/space/niche and want to boost your notoriety, collaborating with like-minded thought leaders in your arena will help you do so at a faster pace. You also get access to that thought leader's audience and, hopefully, that additional exposure will put a few more eyes and ears on your initiatives going forward. On the flip side, if you want to firmly position yourself as a thought leader that people seeking insight on your area of expertise can turn to, keeping the focus solely on yourself with solo podcast content may be the better way to go.Your podcast may not feature a back-and-forth on a particular subject due to the lack of guests. But you can make up for that by confidently delivering an impactful message for your audience to learn from. This, in turn, helps you establish a stronger level of trust and connection with every listener that presses the play button. In Episode 002 of Solo Podcasting Simplified, I'm taking a look at both sides of the equation - what are some of the advantages and disadvantages of solo podcast content, as well as guest-driven content...and when does it make sense to lean into one or the other?Click here for this episode's feature blog post, resources, and moreThank you for being part of the Solo Podcasting Simplified experience!Watch the video version of this episode on YouTubeLearn More About The Solo Podcaster's MastermindSchedule a Free Discovery Session with JasonTheme Music courtesy of Alex Grohl via pixabay.com

Of the millions of podcasts currently in existence on planet earth (both active as well as no longer producing content), the vast majority of them were built with the popular format of hosts welcoming guests onto their show for impactful conversation. This approach, of course, has its benefits:Guests help split the dialogue so the host doesn't have to do all the talkingGuests bring a new layer of insight and perspective to each episodeGuests give you an opportunity to tap into a new audience (as long as they share the content once it's live)But often times, podcasters overlook some of the disadvantages of featuring guests on their show. Including, but not limited to:The guest will be the featured thought leader for each episodeFinding guests and preparing for interviews can be time-consumingGuests may go silent after your recording and do nothing to help you promote once it's liveMy belief is this: since the majority of podcasts are built with a host-guest dynamic, new podcasters feel this is the best (maybe even the only) way to produce their soon-to-launch show. And I get it. It's a template that's worked for years and it makes sense. But what it really comes down to is your overall brand objectives.Do you want to be the go-to thought leader that people in search of the transformation you know you can deliver turn to?Do you want to use your podcast to build an unbreakable bond with your listeners, giving them an outlet to establish trust in you and your message?Do you want more freedom and flexibility in your podcast production initiatives? Then producing a solo podcast is the only way to fly!In the world premiere episode of Solo Podcasting Simplified, I'm going to share some of the undeniable benefits of solo podcasting, as well as set the table for what you'll learn and discover as future episodes of this podcast go live.Click here for this episode's feature blog post, resources, and moreThank you for being part of the Solo Podcasting Simplified experience!Watch the video version of this episode on YouTubeLearn More About The Solo Podcaster's MastermindSchedule a Free Discovery Session with JasonTheme Music courtesy of Alex Grohl via pixabay.com

Jason and I talk about how to niche down, find ways to take your brand to the next level, and so much more! Jason breaks down why numbers are deceiving and how impact can be far greater if you focus on your content. We also talked about how dialing in on your craft is a significant step that your brand needs. You'll Learn: How to take your brand to the next level What it means to level up in your craft How to collaborate with other podcasters How to show up everyday for your brand What it takes to make it happen for your brand “I encourage any new podcast, or actually, it's more of a challenge. It's not encouraging. I challenge you to not look at your metrics for six months at least, at a minimum. And when I tell people this, they're like, oh my God, why is it because they don't matter? That's not what you're building this for. If you're building it strictly for download numbers, that's going to catch up to you because it's painful in the beginning to look at those numbers, and it can completely derail any effort that you have. I only say this is a flawed metric because a download does not necessarily mean that the true impact of your show was felt by someone listening. Because if you're subscribed to my podcast, anytime I put new content out, it's going to automatically filter to your device and you're going to get a notification saying, that evolution of brand. My podcast has a new episode and this is the title, blah, blah, blah. That doesn't mean you listen to it, but on my end, I get credit for a download, but I don't care about that. I care about you listening to this content so you feel the value of the conversation” - Jason Cercone Connect With Jason https://jasoncercone.com/enhanceyourauthority/ Top Recommended Resources: www.thewinnersparadigm.com Now Sponsored By My Fit Life DISCOUNT CODE: TWP20159 For 20% OFF https://myfitlife.net/?ref=3Ogi6ygr Thanks for Rocking With US!
