On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got a pair of songwriters who broke out in the ‘90s and early 2000s and have had fruitful careers since—and who happen to be old pals—Ben Kweller and Brendan Benson. As you'll hear in this chat, Kweller got his rock life started early, learning guitar as a teenager and hustling hard for gigs in the small Texas town where he grew up. His first band, Radish, got a big record deal while Kweller was still a kid, and while they never exactly blew up, there's definitely some love out there for the band's early records. Kweller went solo in the early 2000s with the classic album Sha Sha, which was an early release on Dave Matthews' record label ATO—and which last year got the deluxe anniversary reissue treatment. He's had a run of great solo records since, and was in a supergroup called The Bens with Ben Folds and Ben Lee. He also started a music collective called The Noise Company, which is a sort of hybrid studio/management/record label. They're having a big blowout at this year's South by Southwest, so if you're down there, it's at the Mohawk on March 15. Check out a little bit of a great Kweller song right here, “American Cigarettes.” Brendan Benson, as you'll hear in this chat, is a bit older than Kweller, but he's had a similarly remarkable career. Benson's debut solo album came out back in 1996, but if you're looking for a place to start with his driving rock songs, check out 2002's Lapalco. Benson has eight solo albums to his credit, including 2002's Low Key, but he might be best known as the co-frontman of The Raconteurs, along with his old friend, bandmate, and Detroit-area native Jack White. Check out a great Benson track for earlier days right here, “What I'm Looking For,” and catch him at the Noise Company showcase this weekend as well. These two old pals sound delighted to be chatting, and they jump right into an unplanned episode of Car Talk—Kweller, as it turns out, might get himself a Tesla Cybertruck. They also talk a lot of the spark of creativity that led them to their chosen careers, and they each mention the embarrassing first songs they ever wrote. Kweller tells a great story about hearing “Smells Like Teen Spirit” for the first time as well, and Benson admits that The Three Stooges have had a huge influence on how he harmonizes. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Ben Kweller and Brendan Benson for chatting. This month we're back in our current millenium with our favourite songs of 2005 including generous helpings of indie-rock, chamberpop, industrial, synthpop, prog-metal & hiphop. We've each chosen our 10 favourite songs of the year and sent them over to Colin's wife Helen, who put the playlists together and distributed them so we were each given a playlist of the 20 songs from the other two hosts, along with our own 10. We then ranked the playlists in order of preference and sent them back to Helen, who totalled up the points and worked out the order. She also joined us on the episode to read out the countdown, which we found out as we recorded so all reactions are genuine. Now, admittedly, in parts we're a little bit brutal to some of the songs in the list as we're three separate people with differing music tastes, but please remember that to be in this episode at all the songs have to have been in one of our top 10's of that year. Bands featured in this episode include (In alphabetical order, no spoilers here!) -And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead, Brendan Benson, The Bravery, Bright Eyes, Broken Social Scene, Clutch, Death Cab For Cutie, Editors, The Fall, Ben Folds, Gogol Bordello, Gojira, Imogen Heap, Malcolm Middleton, Nine Black Alps, Nine Inch Nails, Jim Noir, Opeth, Pernice Brothers, Porcupine Tree, Robyn, Shady Bard, The Spinto Band, Sufjan Stevens, Strapping Young Lad, Matt Sweeney & Bonny Prince Billy, Teenage Fanclub, VNV Nation, The Wedding Present, & Kanye West Ft Jay-Z. The scoring of our own list of 10 is now slightly more complicated in order to give a truer level of points to our own favourites. So rather than them only being able to score as many points as our 10th favourite in the other list, the points in our own list were distributed as follows -1st place - 20 points2nd place - 18 points3rd place – 16 points4th place – 14 points5th place – 12 points6th place – 9 points7th place – 7 points8th place – 5 points9th place – 3 points10th place -1 pointHosts - Ian Clarke, Colin Jackson-Brown & Tracey BGuest starring Helen Jackson-Brown.Playlist compiling/distributing – Helen Jackson-BrownRecorded/Edited/Mixed/Original Music by Colin Jackson-Brown for We Dig PodcastsThanks to Peter Latimer for help with the scoring system.Say hello at www.facebook.com/wedigmusicpcast or tweet us at http://twitter.com/wedigmusicpcast or look at shiny pictures on Instagram at http://instagram.com/wedigmusicpcast Part of the We Made This podcast network. https://twitter.com/wmt_network You can also find all the We Dig Music & Free With This Months Issue episodes at www.wedigpodcasts.com

For those that know of him, many see Brendan Benson as the Paul to Jack White's John in the Raconteurs. The dual frontman "super group", as they don't care to be called, features the pop sensibilities of Detroit peer, Brendan Benson.Benson has had his own music career for quite a while. His first record in 1999, titled One Mississippi, was enjoyable but a commercial flop. Given another chance, 2002's Lapalco sold three times as many records. That was enough to earn Brendan Benson a seat at the producer's table, crafting 2005's Alternative To Love.In this episode, we see that Brendan has what it takes to write near perfect songs. But he doesn't quite stick the landing, track after track. It can be a frustration. Yet there's something to be said about those particular moments, as we examine what it may be like to be in Brendan's position in the early 2000s.

The Last Internationale (TLI) is an American rock band formed by New York City guitarist Edgey Pires and vocalist Delila Paz. The group is known for its socially-conscious lyrics and strong live performances. Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello introduced the band to his bandmate, drummer Brad Wilk, who subsequently joined the band between 2014 and 2015. Their debut album, We Will Reign, was released on August 19, 2014 via Epic Records and was produced by Brendan O'Brien and Brendan Benson. The band made their network television debut on August 27, 2014, playing "Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Indian Blood" on the Late Show with David Letterman. TLI toured with the likes of Robert Plant, The Who, Guns N Roses, Kiss and played the biggest European Festivals. I had the pleasure to chat with Edgey and Delila, in anticipation of both their new album "TLI3" release March 31st, coinciding with a mammoth 33-date headline tour of Europe and UK! There was so much more I wanted to talk about, but we agreed we shall have a part 2 :) Hope you all enjoy this insightful conversation! Much love, Carl PS: Thanks to my dear friend, Niper Boaventura, for Mastering the Audio of this Episode!
Robyn Hitchcock is an English singer-songwriter and guitarist who led “The Soft Boys” in the late 1970s and released the classic Neo-psychedelic album, “Underwater Moonlight”, which influenced bands such as R.E.M. Robyn also had a successful solo career, with songs like “I Often Dream of Trains”. On this episode, Robyn and Jack talk about Robyn's life and music - and The Beatles! Or click here for more information: Linktr.ee/BeatlesEarth ----- The Beatles were an English rock band, formed in Liverpool in 1960, that comprised John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr. They are regarded as the most influential band of all timeand were integral to the development of 1960s counterculture and popular music's recognition as an art form. Rooted in skiffle, beat and 1950s rock 'n' roll, their sound incorporated elements of classical music and traditional pop in innovative ways; the band later explored music styles ranging from ballads and Indian music to psychedelia and hard rock. As pioneers in recording, songwriting and artistic presentation, the Beatles revolutionised many aspects of the music industry and were often publicised as leaders of the era's youth and sociocultural movements. Led by primary songwriters Lennon and McCartney, the Beatles evolved from Lennon's previous group, the Quarrymen, and built their reputation playing clubs in Liverpool and Hamburg over three years from 1960, initially with Stuart Sutcliffe playing bass. The core trio of Lennon, McCartney and Harrison, together since 1958, went through a succession of drummers, including Pete Best, before asking Starr to join them in 1962. Manager Brian Epstein moulded them into a professional act, and producer George Martin guided and developed their recordings, greatly expanding their domestic success after signing to EMI Records and achieving their first hit, "Love Me Do", in late 1962. Lennon, McCartney, Harrison and Starr all released solo albums in 1970. Their solo records sometimes involved one or more of the others; Starr's Ringo (1973) was the only album to include compositions and performances by all four ex-Beatles, albeit on separate songs. With Starr's participation, Harrison staged the Concert for Bangladesh in New York City in August 1971. Other than an unreleased jam session in 1974, later bootlegged as A Toot and a Snore in '74, Lennon and McCartney never recorded together again. Two double-LP sets of the Beatles' greatest hits, compiled by Klein, 1962–1966 and 1967–1970, were released in 1973, at first under the Apple Records imprint. Commonly known as the "Red Album" and "Blue Album", respectively, each has earned a Multi-Platinum certification in the US and a Platinum certification in the UK. Between 1976 and 1982, EMI/Capitol released a wave of compilation albums without input from the ex-Beatles, starting with the double-disc compilation Rock 'n' Roll Music. The only one to feature previously unreleased material was The Beatles at the Hollywood Bowl (1977); the first officially issued concert recordings by the group, it contained selections from two shows they played during their 1964 and 1965 US tours. The music and enduring fame of the Beatles were commercially exploited in various other ways, again often outside their creative control. In April 1974, the musical John, Paul, George, Ringo ... and Bert, written by Willy Russell and featuring singer Barbara Dickson, opened in London. It included, with permission from Northern Songs, eleven Lennon-McCartney compositions and one by Harrison, "Here Comes the Sun". Displeased with the production's use of his song, Harrison withdrew his permission to use it.Later that year, the off-Broadway musical Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band on the Road opened. All This and World War II (1976) was an unorthodox nonfiction film that combined newsreel footage with covers of Beatles songs by performers ranging from Elton John and Keith Moon to the London Symphony Orchestra. The Broadway musical Beatlemania, an unauthorised nostalgia revue, opened in early 1977 and proved popular, spinning off five separate touring productions. In 1979, the band sued the producers, settling for several million dollars in damages. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1978), a musical film starring the Bee Gees and Peter Frampton, was a commercial failure and an "artistic fiasco", according to Ingham. Accompanying the wave of Beatles nostalgia and persistent reunion rumours in the US during the 1970s, several entrepreneurs made public offers to the Beatles for a reunion concert.Promoter Bill Sargent first offered the Beatles $10 million for a reunion concert in 1974. He raised his offer to $30 million in January 1976 and then to $50 million the following month. On 24 April 1976, during a broadcast of Saturday Night Live, producer Lorne Michaels jokingly offered the Beatles $3,000 to reunite on the show. Lennon and McCartney were watching the live broadcast at Lennon's apartment at the Dakota in New York, which was within driving distance of the NBC studio where the show was being broadcast. The former bandmates briefly entertained the idea of going to the studio and surprising Michaels by accepting his offer, but decided not to. With a career now spanning six decades, Robyn Hitchcock remains a truly one-of-a-kind artist –surrealist rock 'n' roller, iconic troubadour, guitarist, poet, painter, performer. An unparalleled, deeply individualistic songwriter and stylist, Hitchcock has traversed myriad genres with humor, intelligence, and originality over more than thirty albums and seemingly infinite live performances. From The Soft Boys' proto-psych-punk and The Egyptians' Dadaist pop to solo masterpieces like 1984's milestone I Often Dream of Trains and 1990's Eye, Hitchcock has crafted a strikingly original oeuvre rife with sagacious observation, astringent wit, recurring marine life, mechanized rail services, cheese, Clint Eastwood, and innumerable finely drawn characters real and imagined. Born in London in 1953, Hitchcock attended Winchester College before moving to Cambridge in 1974. He began playing in a series of bands, including Dennis and the Experts which became The Soft Boys in 1976. Though light years away from first wave punk's revolutionary clatter, the band still manifested the era's spirit of DIY independence with their breakneck reimagining of British psychedelia. During their (first) lifetime, The Soft Boys released two albums, among them 1980's landmark second LP, Underwater Moonlight. “The term ‘classic' is almost as overused as ‘genius' and ‘influential,'” declared Rolling Stone upon the album's 2001 reissue. “But Underwater Moonlight remains all three of those descriptions.” Hitchcock embarked on his solo career with 1981's Black Snake Diamond Röle, affirming his knack for eccentric insight and surrealist lyrical hijinks. 1984's I Often Dream Of Trains fused that approach with autumnal acoustic arrangements which served to deepen the emotional range of his songcraft. Robyn Hitchcock and The Egyptians were born that same year and immediately lit up college rock playlists with albums like 1986's Element of Light. He signed to A&M Records in 1987 and earned early alternative hits with “Balloon Man” and “Madonna of the Wasps.” Hitchcock returned to his dark acoustic palette with 1990's equally masterful Eye before joining the Warner Bros. label for a succession of acclaimed albums including 1996's Moss Elixir and 1999's Jewels For Sophia. Having first reunited for a brief run of shows in 1994, The Soft Boys came together for a second go-around in 2001, this time releasing Nextdoorland to universal applause. Hitchcock joined the Yep Roc label in 2004, embracing collaboration with such friends and like-minded artists as Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings (2004's Spooked) and legendary producer Joe Boyd (2014's The Man Upstairs). Beginning in 2006, Hitchcock released a trio of albums backed by The Venus 3, featuring Peter Buck, Scott McCaughey and Bill Rieflin. Hitchcock moved to Nashville in 2015 where he quickly found a place among the Music City community, recording 2017's self-titled album Robyn Hitchcock with an array of local talent including co-producer Brendan Benson. In 2019, Hitchcock joined forces with XTC's Andy Partridge for the four-song EP, Planet England. Indeed, Hitchcock has proven an irrepressible collaborator throughout his long career, teaming with a boundless series of fellow artists over the years, including R.E.M., Grant-Lee Phillips, Jon Brion, The Decemberists, Norwegian pop combo I Was A King, Yo La Tengo to name but a very few. Along with his musical efforts, Hitchcock has appeared in a number of films, among them collaborations with the late Jonathan Demme on 1998's concert documentary Storefront Hitchcock as well as roles in 2004's The Manchurian Candidate and 2008's Rachel Getting Married. An inveterate traveler and live performer, Hitchcock has toured near constantly for much of the past four decades, playing countless shows around the world, from Africa to the Arctic. Locked down in Nashville and London by the global pandemic of 2020, Hitchcock and his partner Emma Swift began their Live From Sweet Home Quarantine livestream series, performing weekly sets joined by their two cats, Ringo and Tubby. 2021 saw the publication of Hitchcock's first book, Somewhere Apart: Selected Lyrics 1977-1997, featuring 73 songs and 34 illustrations in a beautiful cloth-bound edition from his own Tiny Ghost Press. His new album Shufflemania! is out on October 21, 2022 on Tiny Ghost Records.

New music from Pearl Earl, Julian Cope and local artist Sloan Brothers. Plus Brendan Benson chats with JoE Silva about his latest solo long player “Low Key.”
Brendan Benson is an accomplished solo artist who also happens to co-lead a popular band, the Raconteurs. He'd released three albums of tuneful, smart rock when he played an unfinished song for his Detroit friend Jack White. The White Stripes frontman completed it, they recorded it with another band's rhythm section, and a supergroup was born, along with its first hit, “Steady, As She Goes.” Now Benson lives in Nashville, where he recorded his excellent eighth solo album, Low Key, and he also collaborates with other musicians, some country, some not (including Robyn Hitchcock). How do those co-writing gigs work? Why can they be embarrassing? Has Nashville rubbed off on his songwriting? Does he consider his work to be autobiographical? Will he ever tour again on his own or with the Raconteurs? Benson is as insightful in conversation as he is in song. (Photo by Guillaume Lechat.)

Welcome to Season 2 of When Songs Mean Business! On today's episode I am chatting with Andy Reed, a recording engineer, producer, singer, songwriter, and musician from Bay City, MI. He owns and operates his own recording studio called Reed Recording Company. Throughout his 24 year career, Andy has worked with hundreds of artists as a touring musician and in the recording studio, including a couple of my favorites, Brendan Benson and The Verve Pipe. Andy explains the different ways to mic, track, and record things, what a producer can bring to an incomplete song, how artists can evolve to sound different on every album, and how to relax into your creativity. We discuss his entrepreneurial journey over the past 16 years, what it's like to have a studio at home, and of course, what he's been listening to lately. I loved this conversation and I hope you do too. Please give us a follow on Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube for video versions and clips of these episodes, and as always feel free to email me with questions, links are in the show notes. Which are YOUR top Raconteurs tracks? This question is at the heart of the first installment of a new ongoing series called TOP SPECIAL-- wherein the Third Men Podcast examines and evaluates their top 3 tracks from a designated ban or time period. First up in this series are the Raconteurs, the wildly successful joining of Jack White, Brendan Benson, Little Jack Lawrence and Patrick Keeler - whose 3 studio albums will be the focus of our top picks. Will debates rage? Yes, they will.. Will stones shout? You'd better believe it.. Through thick, thin, gold, copper, platinum, we're here to bring you perspective, analysis and explanation for each killer cut. Helping your humble co-hosts on this journey is longtime friend of the show Luke Sinclare, last seen on the podcast remixing White Stripes records with us and having a blast doing so. Songs of Our Own: A Marital Tour of the Music That Shaped Us.
Hi Folks! For todays episode we listen to The Raconteurs' song 'Steady as She Goes' off of their 2006 album 'Broken Boy Soldiers'. We talk about this supergroup featuring Jack White, Brendan Benson, Jack Lawrence and Patrick Keeler, as well as what we think the song means and of course the not one but two music videos. Thanks for listening! *Full episode dropping the middle of this month*Spotify PlaylistIntro/Outro Music:Upbeat Forever by Kevin MacLeodLink: https://incompetech.filmmusic.io/song/5011-upbeat-foreverLicense: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/
For the third episode, we are looking at Jack White's first major side project, the Raconteurs. While Jack wouldn't embrace the label of side project or super group, the Raconteurs were a departure from what people knew of Jack White. With fellow singer/songwriter Brendan Benson, and the bass and drummer from The Greenhorns, Jack Lawrence and Patrick Keeler respectively, The Raconteurs created a rounded, refreshing project over the course of many years culminating in a 10 track album. After a year of touring, Jack would return to the White Stripes for another album -- what would be the last album. 2007's Icky Thump is both a return to the fundamentals of the White Stripes and a departure into the strange, all at once. Jack and Meg had really turned over every stone in their little room to great effect.--Jack White rose to legendary musician status via his breakthrough band, The White Stripes. Coming out as a blues rock, punk aesthetic garage rock band with child-like drummer Meg White, The White Stripes paved the way for a lot of acts to come. As their success grew, Jack White branched out into other projects, including the classic rock inspired "super group" The Raconteurs, and Led Zeppelin-spirit revival, hard as nails "super group," The Dead Weather. As Jack gained momentum elsewhere, The White Stripes came to an end, leaving room for Jack White to explore a solo career. Throughout his solo career, he started honing his comfort material -- country, blues, and fuzz rock -- moving toward new grounds with experimental noise, high tech production, and unexpected plot twists.Tyler, being a conseur of pop and knower of all things music, and Greg, a Jack White super fan, have a lot to say on Jack White, including a plethora of insights and context into the creation of this music, the cultural impact of Jack White and his embedded philosophies, and the growth of self and artist.
Episode 35 of The Hitstreak, a podcast where we talk about anything and everything! This week we're joined by Brendan Benson, co-founder of The Raconteurs, talking about family, parenting, getting sober, and his time with the band. Let us know in the comments what YOU want to hear about next! About our Guest: Brendan Benson finds himself in an enviable spot as he enters the third decade of a remarkably creative, consistently idiosyncratic career - an accomplished frontman, musician, songwriter, producer, and band member. Benson's first new LP in seven years, DEAR LIFE marks his most inventive and upbeat work thus far. An 11-track song cycle about life, love, family, fatherhood, and the pure joy of making music. Produced and almost entirely performed by Benson at his own Readymade Studio in Nashville, the album sees the Michigan-born, Nashville-based artist reveling in a more modernist approach than ever before. Imbued with revitalized ambition and confidence, DEAR LIFE is Brendan Benson at his very best. Beginning with 1996's now-classic debut, ONE MISSISSIPPI and its masterful 2002 follow-up, LAPALCO, Benson has always infused classic craftsmanship with contemporary invention. Along with his own critically acclaimed canon, Benson is co-founder - with Jack White, Jack Lawrence, and Patrick Keeler - of The Raconteurs. The band first convened in 2006, winning worldwide acclaim, GRAMMY Award nominations, and a chart-topping smash single "Steady As She Goes," with their now-classic debut album, BROKEN BOY SOLDIERS. After more than a decade, The Raconteurs returned to action in 2019 with their critically acclaimed, chart-topping LP, HELP US STRANGER, highlighted in part by songs Benson had initially considered for his own LP, "Only Child" and "Somedays (I Don't Feel Like Trying)."
