American Vintners have been struggling for decades. Tarrifs made some overseas options too costly and so they've been ordering glass from South America - where one of the producers had a fire a few months ago, putting pressure on the others to try and ramp up production. When Red Rock Brewery opened its doors in 1994, you could count the number of craft breweries in Utah on one hand. Now, obviously, the state boasts quite a few more. But the brewery that brought us the likes of Elephino Double IPA, Bobcat Nut Brown Ale, Marvella Belgian-Style Tripel, Grand Bavaria Weiss Bier, and many, many others remains as relevant and as important today as it was nearly 30 years ago. The venerable brewery is the winner of more than 100 medals. And its downtown brewpub has earned Large Brewpub of the Year recognition by the Great American Beer Festival. Based in Salt Lake City, the self-distributing Red Rock offers a variety of beers on draft and sells its packaged products primarily in 500-milliliter bottles. Representatives say the brewery is on track to brew 5,000 barrels in 2021 and it continues to blend tradition with innovation when it comes to satisfying public tastes. I visited with Sales Manager Erika Palmer and Head Brewer Kevin Davis in early June 2021. We met at the Red Rock production brewery, which is attached to the popular Red Rock Beer Store at 443 North 400 West in Salt Lake City. The Red Rock footprint also features three brewpubs—including the original Red Rock brewhouse and pub, which is headed up by longtime brewer Chris Harlin. Our conversation dives into the history of Red Rock. Erika started as a bartender at the original brewpub before leaving and then returning to Red Rock two separate times to take on sales responsibilities. Kevin, whose 20-plus-year brewing career includes stops at Brewery Ommegang, Keegan Ales, and New Belgium, joined the Red Rock team in 2018 following the departure of Kevin Templin, who ultimately opened Templin Family Brewing. Erika and Kevin also discuss several beers woven into the Red Rock tapestry. They shed light on how a few fan favorites came to be and hint at what you might expect to see in the future. Red Rock is an important player in Utah craft beer. I hope you'll find learning more about the past, present, and future of Red Rock as interesting as I did. Thanks to Erika and Kevin for taking the time to visit with Utah Beer News. And thank you for listening. I hope you enjoy hearing more about Red Rock Brewery. If you enjoy this type of storytelling, I'd really appreciate it if you could share this episode with your beer-loving friends, and then please leave a review on your podcast platform of choice. And now, let's dive in to learn more about Red Rock Brewery. For an accompanying article, please visit UtahBeerNews.com. Enjoy the episode! Episode 60 | June 28, 2021

Neon Rainbows by Brewery Ommegang is an enchanting, vibrant, evanescent, full-spectrum beer that’s alluringly hazy and irresistibly juicy. It’s unfiltered, double dry-hopped, and gone way too soon. Brewery Ommegang first opened in winter of 1997 with Ommegang Abbey Dubbel, an 8.5% ABV traditional Trappist-style dark ale. Brewed with a complex array of spices and packaged in 750ml bottles, Abbey breaks the mold of the emerging American craft beer scene. This week on FDB - a dangerously creative barber, a Fisherman can’t handle the dangers that lie beneath, a man finds a creative way to get the city’s attention regarding potholes, and more! While the Super Bowl is over, we have more football content for you! Jake Wallack, or “JWall” as his fans affectionately know him, won the Madden Club Championship on February 9th - he joins the show to relive his big victory. JWall takes us through the process of qualifying for a competitive Madden tournament, his 14-6 win over one of the best Madden players in the nation, and his strategy to take him down. We also discuss JWall’s love for the Detroit Lions, and Calvin Johnson’s recent Hall of Fame induction. BEERS: Brewery Ommegang: “where heaven met earth,” according to its website, isn’t really a far stretch. Will reviews Neon Rainbows from the Cooperstown brewer, and his rating is probably worth you heading to Untappd.com to find out if you’re one of the 47 states that Ommegang distributes to. Jake takes a trip down the Pawtuxet River to Apponaug Brewing Company in Warwick, RI. To the naked eye, it’s a “come for the food, stay for the vibes, and drink some beer in the meantime” vibe...but is Apponaug actually a hidden gem in Rhode Island? Jake reviews “Lakerunner,” a West Coast pale ale that might have him coming back sooner than he thought. BUSINESS: With plenty of high tensions in the market over the past few weeks, it’s refreshing to hear about a trailblazing entrepreneur making moves. Whitney Wolfe Herd is officially the youngest self-made female billionaire in history after she led Bumble to its IPO this past week; it’s already up around 5% in the first few days of trading. We break down Bumble’s attractive case to buy, and Whitney Wolfe Herd’s long journey to bringing her company public. BALLS: Are you lost without football? We are. We reminisce on a game that shocked many, as Tom Brady collected his 7th Super Bowl ring. What’s next for Brady? Who will the Buccaneers retain as the free agency rumors begin? After demanding a release from the Houston Texans, where will JJ Watt look to play football in 2021? We also break down the recent success of the New York Knicks, who currently enjoy a 6th-place marker in the Eastern Conference. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/beersbusinessandballs/support
Jump forward to *31:10* to get to *the End of the World*. Is it the end of the world? Would you even know if the apocalypse was breathing down our neck? How many ways could the world actually end? What's the best movie about the end of the world? Which book about the apocalypse is the greatest? Jump forward to *31:10* to skip out on John and Jake rambling about every single kind of eggs you can make, and the kinds they suck at making. How Pho puns are totally out of control in Los Angeles and where to get the best Ramen in Raleigh (hint it's in Cary). But first, the beer: Jake is drinking an *Atomic Breakfast Stout* from Durham's Glass Jug Beer Lab (https://www.glass-jug.com), which has totally redeemed itself since last month's weird Stone Fruit Sour that left the guys thinking they were drinking tea. John is digging a Hazy *Neon Rainbows* from Brewery Ommegang (https://www.ommegang.com) in Cooperstown, NY - home of the Baseball Hall of Fame. Today’s episode is the kind of conversation I’d typically have in a bar over a few pints with a friend—one in which we’d talk shop and inevitably start prognosticating about a brewery or a beer in a way that would bend each of our opinions into oblivion before we’d finally run out of stamina and order one last round. Brewery Ommegang—what the hell is up with Brewery Ommegang? Over the past couple months we learned that the brewery’s CEO, Doug Campbell, was leaving. Next to depart was Brewmaster Phil Leinhart. Now, the foreseeable future for this history-making, Belgian-inspired brewery—which once brought us iconic beers like Hennepin—will now be devoted to a juicy, Hazy IPA called Neon Rainbows. The Brewery Ommegang story has been one of total whiplash over the last few years, as it has adjusted to tumultuous U.S. market trends; its increasing physical isolation, compared to the taprooms now populating every corner of U.S. towns; and its sale to Duvel, alongside breweries like Firestone Walker Brewing Company and Boulevard Brewing Company. A lot of gravity for that network of breweries is currently coming out of Kansas City. Now the question remains: Will it inevitably suck Ommegang out of its unique, idiosyncratic orbit? And if it does, what will be left of this once-legendary U.S. craft brewer? To get to that, I wanted to talk to beer writer Jeff Alworth. He and I were both at the last—and seemingly final—edition of the annual festival called Belgium Comes to Cooperstown. And we spent most of that time together talking about the odd arc of the Ommegang story, and where it might go next. Organizers put the festival on hiatus after that most recent celebration, seemingly to take a moment and figure out how to evolve it in 2019. Well, it never quite got back on track—and with all the news, I found myself wishing I had a pub, a pint, and Jeff Alworth to talk to about it. This is Jeff Alworth, one of the country’s best beer writers. Listen in.
Sixpoint Brewery talks Cicerone certification, crispy lagers, and nuclear submarines Sixpoint Brewery first came to recognition for their bright Resin DIPA. As the name implies, this isn't a hazy and fruity beer. Resin packs a punch of pine and citrus to quench your thirst for that West Coast goodness. Education and Training Manager Max Finnance wants you to enjoy Resin, and all your beers, a bit more and he joins us this week to talk about just how to do that. Before his life in beer Finnance was stationed on a nuclear submarine and tells us some of the science background he gained has helped in his brewery life. He's a certified Advanced Cicerone as well as a BJCP Certified beer judge. Read, he knows his beer. He admits that this type of in-depth education isn't for everyone but if you're a passionate beer fan you can still learn a bit more about your beers, and how to drink them. Sure, we all think we know how to drink, but do we really? Some of the classes he teaches are designed to educate retailers, distributors, and employees on the art of beer. How to properly store, serve, and sip your brews. Finnance enjoys traveling and sharing his knowledge but with the Covid Curse upon us he's taken his classes online. Hazy IPAs still rule when it comes to questions he gets about beer, but he'd also like everyone to know more about lagers. There's a huge variety out there well beyond the Crispy Boy pilsners but lagers still have a reputation with many people as clear and light beers. If you're in a larger area it's likely there's a local brewery brewing up a variety of lagers, so take a trip and see what's on tap. As a silver lining to the Covid cloud, Sixpoint has been able to take advantage of some temporary laws to host an outdoor tasting room. A more permanent taproom (or two) is in the works, although there have been some delays due to landlord issues. Follow Sixpoint on social media to get the scoop as thing develop.
