Shat the Movies: 80's & 90's Best Film Review

Of all the '80s movies that needed a sequel, "Young Guns" wasn't one of them. But when you quadruple the budget, beef up the cast and toss in Christian Slater, the Shat Crew (and commissioner Kelly B.) certainly will saddle up. This 1990 Western is more "The Ballad of Brushy Bill Roberts" than an accurate retelling of the events following the Lincoln County War—with questionable wound care, incredible distances traveled, oddly accurate "wanted" posters, terrible Old Face and the notion that anyone would want to boink William Petersen. In this episode, hear about Big D's powwow adventure, play "Navajo or Shakespeare," learn how a Jenny Wright nude scene could possibly be a bad thing and decide whether Aragorn really needed to be in "Young Guns II." Some small Texas towns have prospered and grown during the decades. Others have boomed and then settled into obscurity. Hico in Hamilton County appeared to be in the sad, second category, but determined citizens in Hico are bringing Hico back. Increasingly it is on the list of small towns to visit in Texas and (in my opinion) for good reason. In 1856, a few years prior to the Civil War, the rush to Texas was on. That year, eight families arrived in covered wagons and settled on Honey Creek in the northern corner of Hamilton County. In 1860, John Rankin Alfred and his family, also traveling in covered wagons, rode into Central Texas and joined the Honey Creek settlement. Alfred started a small business selling goods he'd brought by wagon and engaged in the cattle business. When the community petitioned for a post office, Alfred became postmaster and named the now official (but not yet incorporated) town Hico (HY-koh), after his birthplace, Hico, in Calloway County, Kentucky. When the Texas Central Railroad (which was part of the famous Katy Railroad) was built two and a half miles away, like so many Texas towns, the citizens decided that if the community was to prosper, they needed to relocate the town adjacent to the rail line. So they moved. Ten years later, two major fires destroyed downtown's wooden buildings. The town rebuilt with big blocks of limestone. The move to the rail line proved to be a smart one. By 1883, Hico was incorporated and became a major center of Texas trade. Hico's grain market exploded. By the turn of the century, Hico was shipping more grain than any other location on the Texas Central rail line. By 1907, the cotton shipments through Hico were in the tens of thousands of bales. Business was good and downtown Hico boomed with almost one hundred businesses—from hotels and grocery stores to both a broom and a candy factory. An 1895 opera house, a theatre, and tented roller rink offered fun and entertainment. But by 1955, the trading boom—which had been fueled by train transportation—fizzled and the town's business and population declined. A situation aggravated by major interstate construction bypassing the community. But today, more than sixty-five years later, when one might have expected Hico to be a near ghost town, it is a thriving example of a historic small town creating a new history. From 2019 to 2020, the population grew by 12.5% to 1,780 people. Not a big town. but a growing one with lots to offer. Main street is lined with handsome, historic stone buildings from more than 100 years ago—some structures sport old fashioned ads painted on their sides — the billboards of the past. A walk down Main Street is a trip back in time. Except—these old fashioned buildings now house charming inns and restaurants, boutiques, and various shops. The newly restored 1896 Midland Hotel recreates the hospitality of the past in its fourteen guest rooms, while its Chop House restaurant serves up thoroughly up-to-date dishes with a flavor of Texas and the 1896 Saloon has drinks to help you “wet your whistle” as early Texans said. A Texas-history mystery also beckons in downtown Hico. Was a Hico resident named William Henry “Ollie” Roberts, known as Brushy Bill Roberts, none other than the outlaw Billy the Kid? Many believe that he was. Brushy Bill claimed that Pat Garrett, the man who took credit for shooting Billy the Kid, really shot another outlaw named Billy Barlow and that he, Billy the Kid, slipped into the night and vanished, becoming another miscreant GTT—“Gone to Texas.” The full story is an interesting one and there are lots of clues—from scars on Brushy Bill that match scars where it is known Billy the Kid was wounded, plus testimonials from other noted outlaws of the time that Brushy Bill was in fact Billy the Kid. Brushy Bill died in Hico in 1950 before he received the pardon he was hoping for from New Mexico's governor- a pardon promised..

The outlaw Billy the Kid was allegedly killed at the age of 21 by Sheriff Pat Garrett in the year 1881. Skip ahead another 70 years and you have an elderly man known as Brushy Bill Roberts coming forward shattering the common historical narrative. He claimed to be the kid, said that he had escaped Pat Garrett all of them years before and had been living under the radar ever since. Brushy - with the help of an attorney named William V. Morrison - spent around two years compiling evidence, conducting interviews, researching, documenting all kinds of stuff for the purpose of both proving these claims and obtaining a pardon for Mr. Roberts; the same pardon that Billy the Kid was promised back in the day. Brushy was able to obtain a meeting with the then Governor of New Mexico but it was a no use. The whole ordeal was a media circus and Roberts ended up having a stroke right there in the Governor's mansion. Less than a month later on December 27th, 1950, Roberts would suffer a fatal heart attack and needless to say, the pardon never came. And we've been arguing about the man's true identity ever since! Brushy Bill has piqued my curiosity since I was a little kid, ever since I first watched Young Guns 2. My friends and I played Young Guns at recess. I owned more than one copy of the Bon Jovi Soundtrack over the years and I'm excited beyond words to see Young Guns part 3 on the big screen when it finally comes out – more on that towards the end of this episode. I can't stress this enough - I WANT Brushy Bill to be Billy the Kid. I truly do. I'm not some sort of wild west grinch just trying to suck the fun out of everything. It would be so cool if arguably the most famous outlaw of all time had really escaped death and lived to be an old man. If we could prove that it'd be massive! Unfortunately, I don't think it can be proven. Matter of fact, I'm pretty positive the opposite is true. It's my opinion that this episode will demonstrate, beyond a reasonable doubt, that Brushy Bill Roberts was NOT Billy the Kid. Abandon all hope and join me if you dare!    On the night of July 14th, 1881, the infamous outlaw Billy The Kid was killed in Ft. Sumner New Mexico. Sheriff Pat Garret was questioning Pete Maxwell as to Billy’s whereabouts when the kid walked into the darkened room. Realizing he wasn’t alone, Billy spoke his final words “quien es?” who is it? Garret, recognizing the Kid’s voice, drew his revolver and shot twice, the first bullet struck Billy in the chest, just above the heart. Thus ending the short, yet bloody, career of Billy The Kid.  But did things really go down like that? Did Pat Garrett really kill Billy The Kid? In 1950, 69 years after Billy was supposedly killed, a man known as Brushy Bill Roberts met with the governor of New Mexico, claiming to be Billy The Kid and requesting the pardon he was promised decades before.  The 90-year-old Roberts spoke fluent Spanish and like the kid, he too was ambidextrous. He had 4 signed affidavits from people who actually knew Billy The Kid back in the day swearing that he was, indeed, Billy. And he had every bullet wound Billy was said to have. And then some. Was Brushy Bill really Billy The Kid? And if not, who the hell was he? Bloodybeaverpodcast@gmail.com

On this episode of Expanded Perspectives the guys start the show off talking about how Earth's magnetic field is in a state of dramatic weakening – and according to mind-boggling new research, this phenomenal disruption is part of a pattern lasting for over 1,000 years.Earth's magnetic field doesn't just give us our north and south poles; it's also what protects us from solar winds and cosmic radiation – but this invisible force field is rapidly weakening, to the point scientists think it could actually flip, with our magnetic poles reversing. Then, researchers have uncovered a stunning archaeological find hidden by the waves lapping the Florida coastline: a 7,000-year-old Native American burial site preserved underwater since prehistoric times. The ancient resting place serves as a reminder the stretched Florida peninsula wasn't always as it is today. Millennia ago in a cooler climate, Native Americans lived and died on a broader, greater landmass, before rising seas swept their homes into history. After the break Cam brings up the interesting life and times of famous outlaw Billy the Kid. Billy the Kid was easily the most notorious desperado of the Wild West. He reportedly killed 21 men, one for every year of his young life.  History tells us that “The Kid” was born William Bonney in New York City in 1859.  He later fought against rich ranchers in the Lincoln County Cattle War in New Mexico, and was given a death sentence for killing Sheriff William Brady. Who is buried in Billy the Kid’s grave. According to most sources, Lincoln County Sheriff Pat Garrett was eager to collect the $500 dollar bounty on Billy the Kid.  In July of 1881, he tracked down Billy in Fort Sumner, New Mexico, and killed him. History also tells us that Billy was buried the following day in a simple grave.  But now some people say that history is wrong.  That Billy wasn’t the man in that grave. Sixty-eight years after Billy’s death, a man from Texas, named “Brushy Bill” Roberts, claimed he was Billy the Kid. All of this and more on this weeks episode of Expanded Perspectives!
