Anselm Kiefer is one of the world's greatest living artists. Born in Germany at the end of the Second World War, much of his work in paintings, sculptures and vast installation pieces, has addressed his country's history and culture, asking difficult questions about the legacy of fascism and conflict. His paintings, thickly layered and sometimes embellished with straw or molten lead, often depict dark rutted fields or dense forests. Kiefer is renowned for the size of his work, and for his industrial-scale studio complexes in France, where he has lived for over thirty years. Kiefer's works are included in numerous public collections including the Museum of Modern Art and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, Tate Modern, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the National Gallery of Australia. His most recent show at the Royal Academy in London has paired his works with those of one his artistic heroes for an exhibition called Kiefer/Van Gogh. Producer: Edwina Pitman

Ik houd van de manier waarop hij in zijn werk natuurelementen (bomen, takken, water, aarde) confronteert met harde menselijke ingrepen (pinnen, lijnen, kaders, gebouwen, draden, inperkingen). Hij is afkomstig van Neerpelt, waar hij buurjongen was van Joost Zweegers van Novastar, hij woont en werkt nu in Sint-Martens-Latem bij Gent. Ik zocht hem thuis op; zijn atelier is in de vroegere garage van het huis. Het staat vol potten verf, enkele grote kasten met boeken, een werktafel met een computer, een dartsboard van zijn zoon en aan de muur enkele werken waaraan hij bezig is.Hij vertelt over de meest geweldige striptekenaar die er bestaat, hoe hij quotes uit boeken haalt om te gebruiken op zijn schilderijen, over de ziekte die hij jaren geleden had en die hem de knoop deed doorhakken om voltijds kunstenaar te worden. The poems in Abbie Kiefer's debut collection, Certain Shelter, are, in my reading, about aftermath. They are about grief and loss, whether that is the loss of the speaker's mother to cancer or her hometown's changing landscape. But they are also about change and rebirth, and both the anxiety and the possibility of an unknown future. In our conversation, Abbie and I talked about television as a touch point in her poems, how memory is layered, and how ephemerality is central to the human experience. Then for the second segment, we talked about doing things you're not good at. In October 2021, Meghan Kiefer was brutally stabbed 54 times by her ex-boyfriend outside her Long Island home.
