Boxman talks Young Guns II (1990), and the story of Brushy Bill Roberts, who claimed to be Billy The Kid in the late 1940's. This is one of those sequels that's arguably better than the first movie. With action-packed gunfights, horse chases, running from the law, and an award winning soundtrack. This is a must listen. Who's up for some thrash metal?Megadeth is one of the founding bands of the thrash metal genre, and considered one of the "big four" of U.S. thrash metal (along with Anthrax, Metallica, and Slayer). The heart of the band, primary songwriter, and sole constant member of the band throughout the years is Dave Mustaine. The formation of the band is well known as a revenge effort on Mustaine's part. He was fired from his role as lead guitarist of Metallica just prior to the recording of their debut album due to personal issues with James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich, and due to drug abuse problems. The name of the group was inspired by a political pamphlet from Alan Cranston that read "The arsenal of megadeath can't be rid no matter what the peace treaties come to." Mustaine took the word out of that pamphlet and adjusted the spelling.Rust In Peace is the group's fourth studio album, released in late September but featured in November as it was gaining traction with fans at the time. The album name came from a bumper sticker Mustaine saw that read, "May all your nuclear weapons rust in peace." It was the first album to feature Marty Friedman on guitar and Nick Menza on drums. Dave Mustaine is on guitars and lead vocals, and long time collaborator David Ellefson completes the quartet on bass and backing vocals. The album takes on a number of topics including religion, plitics, warfare, and personal issues Dave Mustaine was dealing with such as drug and alcohol addiction. Mustaine explored a number of religious expressions over his life, and became a born again Christian after attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and focusing on his Christian faith. Lynch brings us this hallmark album of thrash metal in this week's podcast Holy Wars...the Punishment DueThe opening track starts fast, shifts to a slower acoustic bridge, and finishes at a higher speed. The lyrics discuss religious conflict with particular attention being paid to the situations in Israel and Northern Ireland. The subtitle "the Punishment Due" is a reference to the Marvel comic book character called the Punisher. It was the first single released from the album Hangar 18The second single is the second track from the album, and was inspired by the Roswell alien conspiracy theory. Hangar 18 is supposedly located at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, and was believed to be the location where an alien spacecraft and/or bodies were stored.Tornado of SoulsThis is a somewhat deeper cut since it was never released as a single, but it is considered a staple of the band's discography. Marty Friedman's guitar solo in this piece is considered one of the best metal solos of all time, and one of the hardest to play. Bassist David Ellefson co-wrote the lyrics, making it one of the few songs on the album not written by Mustane alone.Rust in Peace...PolarisThe concluding song reflects the album title. It is written from the perspective of a Polaris nuclear weapon, and reflects the catastrophic consequences of nuclear warfare. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Shotgun by Junior Walker & The All Stars (from the motion picture “Misery”)This movie based on the Stephen King novel starring James Caan and Kathy Bates would win Bates an Oscar for Best Actress. STAFF PICKS:Full Circle by the Jeff Healey BandRob starts the staff pick with this blues-infused pick which is the lead track to the Jeff Healey Band's second album, "Hell to Pay." Bobby Whitlock, a member of the supergroup Derek and the Dominos is playing the Hammond organ on this piece. Jeff Healey, blind since an early age, was known for holding his guitar in his lap while playing.Vigilante Man by Hindu Love GodsWayne's staff pick is a bit of a super group. Warren Zevon got together with the members of REM minus Michael Stipe to create this single album on a lark. The group recorded old standards for the album, and this one was originally done by Woody Guthrie in 1940. The song itslef is about hired thugs who would chase away migrants trying to escape the Dust Bowl by moving to California.Traveling Riverside Blues by Led ZeppelinBruce features another cover song, this one written by Robert Johnson in 1937. Led Zeppelin recorded it in 1969, but it was not released until 1990, over ten years after "Fool in the Rain," their last single. It hit number 7 on the Billboard Top Rock Tracks chart in November 1990.Blaze of Glory by Jon Bon JoviLynch finishes the staff picks with a rock ballad containing elements of country and western, written for the motion picture "Young Guns II." It won the Golden Globe award for Best Original Song, and topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart, making it one of Bon Jovi's most successful solo hits. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Theme from the motion picture "Dances with Wolves" by the Royal Scots Dragoon GuardsThis cinematic piece accompanied the Kevin Costner Western which was out in 1990. Of all the '80s movies that needed a sequel, "Young Guns" wasn't one of them. But when you quadruple the budget, beef up the cast and toss in Christian Slater, the Shat Crew (and commissioner Kelly B.) certainly will saddle up. This 1990 Western is more "The Ballad of Brushy Bill Roberts" than an accurate retelling of the events following the Lincoln County War—with questionable wound care, incredible distances traveled, oddly accurate "wanted" posters, terrible Old Face and the notion that anyone would want to boink William Petersen. In this episode, hear about Big D's powwow adventure, play "Navajo or Shakespeare," learn how a Jenny Wright nude scene could possibly be a bad thing and decide whether Aragorn really needed to be in "Young Guns II." In the year 1881 there were two events that shaped the legend of the old west and the imagination of many for years to come. Those events were the shootout at the OK Corral and Pat Garrett shooting Billy the Kid in the back (allegedly). A little over a hundred years later we get three great movies that recreate those events. In this episode we breakdown these three great movies. How do you rank these three? Regulators! Let's ride! Did Pat Garrett kill Billy the Kid? It was a moonlit night in Ft. Sumner, NM when history tells us that Sheriff Pat Garrett shot down the notorious outlaw Billy “the Kid”. Newspapers across the country quickly reported that the Kid was dead and Garrett quickly put the body in the ground. But rumors spread that the Kid had survived and the testimony of Garrett’s posse was contradictory about how, exactly, the shooting had gone down. Nevertheless, without evidence, the story of the heroic Sheriff stood for almost 70 years. Then, in 1950, an old man from Hico, TX petitioned the governor of New Mexico for a pardon for crimes he committed as Billy the Kid. No one took him seriously, and yet the old man was an exact match in physical characteristics and knew intimate details about the Kid’s life. He also knew details about the fateful shooting the night Garrett claimed to have shot him that had been erased by history. Details, for example, that Garrett had killed his very drunk bearded half-Mexican partner, a claim that has only recently been verified by modern research. It has been said that the living write history and not the dead, but when one returns from the dead, so to speak, that which was lost to history is restored. This is the true story of Billy the Kid, complete with new evidence that he lived to a ripe old age and died a free man. THE STORY In 1882 the notorious outlaw Jesse Evans, a childhood friend of Billy the Kid and a participant in the Lincoln County War, walked out of jail after serving a sentence for killing a Texas ranger. Jesse walked out of prison a free man and disappeared, never to be heard from again. Never, that is, until 1949 when Jesse came out of hiding after almost 60 years to claim an inheritance left to him by his brother. In the course of proving his identity to a court, Jesse told some amazing stories of his time when he was an outlaw but his biggest revelation of all was that his good friend Billy the Kid was still alive. Jesse led a young lawyer named William Morrison to an old man named not William H. Bonney but William H. Roberts who after some consideration finally agreed to come forward and reveal himself as Billy the Kid. He agreed to this on one condition- that the lawyer helps him obtain the pardon he was promised by the Governor but never received so he could die a free man. You see, Billy the Kid was still wanted for murder and was condemned to hang. To reveal himself was to risk arrest and death. This was a risk that William H. Roberts was willing to take. He sat down with Mr. Morrison and told his story. This book contains that story. It is the one true autobiography of Billy the Kid. A story that aside from some definite highlights and adventures that one would expect from the Kid, was remarkable normal and focused on his skill breaking horses as much or as more as his skill as a gunslinger. Billy the Kid was, in fact, just a gifted young cowhand who found himself juxtaposed against corrupt officials and lawmen at what became a key moment in American History. Before one dismisses Mr. Roberts it should be considered that 5 living acquaintances of Billy the Kid, aside from Mr. Evans who revealed him, were willing to sign legal affidavits that Mr. Roberts was the man they knew as Billy the Kid. Further, the new photographic comparison shows beyond a shadow of a doubt that they were the same man. Mr. Roberts' story became the inspiration for the opening scene in the hit movie "Young Guns II" starring Emilio Estevez as Billy the Kid. Also, Consider that Pat Garrett was denied his reward for killing the kid for many months and that only a special act of the legislature allowed him to finally receive it. All of this and more is contained in this book. Thanks to Mr. Morrison each of us can now pull up a chair, sit down across from Billy the Kid, and listen as he shares his story. Listen as Mike and Tom discuss the 1990 sequel Young Guns II. They disagree as to the value of the movie... sort of, talk about the depth of actors who appear in it, ponder if Brushy Bill Roberts just might be Grandpa Simpson, and meditate as to how this movie could have been a better viewing experience.
Listen as Mike and Tom discuss four sequels from the year 1990. They rank Another 48HRS, Gremlins 2: The New Batch, Troll 2, and Young Guns II. They even manage to rank them having not seen Troll 2 quite yet. As usual, they disagree on the ranking and as to whether these movies are good or bad. In addition they discuss the difference between a film and a movie.

It's an episode that looks at age-ism, the Klingon culture, and many other deep things as Paul, David, Dr Bill, and Andrew talk about another episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.Feedback for this show can be sent to: listentotheprophets@gmail.comListen to the Prophets is a proud member of the Two True Freaks! Hosts Mat Bradley-Tschirgi and William Thrasher discuss Young Guns II. Billy the Kid (Emilio Estevez) tries to flee to Mexico as he is pursued by former friend Pat Garrett (William Petersen). Young Guns II benefits from a better pacing than the original, but it's also a bit more rote. Things are a little too slick this time around, but the chemistry between the main cast remains strong. Mat finds Maleficent to be an intelligent live-action remake of Sleeping Beauty because of how it expands the scope of the story. Thrasher thinks the recent live-action remakes of Aladdin and The Lion King are so-so at best. Hey guys, this is just a PSA to check your bank statements regularly. If I did, I would have noticed that I still have MoviePass. You think if I keep it for a few more months that it will somehow be advantageous to have had it? Guys, I’m gonna take the bet and keep it. Maybe I’ll start an Indiegogo to fund one year of keeping MoviePass. Please donate. My password wasn’t changed, but their service has voluntarily been down for a month? Weird stuff. I think I watched at least 30 movies with it, so that’s at more than $450 worth, so I shouldn’t complain too much? John Fusco needs know introduction. Known for lonesome Westerners and wandering swordsman, Fusco’s credits include ‘Young Guns,’ ‘Young Guns II,’ ‘Thunderheart,’ ‘The Babe,’ ‘Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron,’ ‘Hidalgo,’ ‘The Forbidden Kingdom,’ ‘Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny,’ ‘Marco Polo,’ and the new Kevin Costner and Woody Harrelson film, ’The Highwaymen.’ His latest film comes from director John Lee Hancock and has been in the works for sixteen years. In fact, the screenplay was originally meant to be a vehicle to complete the third film starring Paul Newman and Robert Redford. The Highwaymen uncovers the untold story of a pair of police offers who were brought out of retirement to catch the outlaws, Bonnie and Clyde. In this exclusive conversation, we discuss priceless lessons from Fusco’s mentors Waldo Salt (Midnight Cowboy) and Ring Lardner Jr. (MASH), similarities between Westerns and Kung Fu films, how he made a movie for Jackie Chan and Jet Li, his conversations with Redford and Newman, and the importance of virtuous characters in cinema. On this episode of the Cult Film Club hosts Paxton, Jaime and Shawn get back up on the saddle and follow the Mexican Blackbird down to Old Mexico while they dodge the attempts of Pat Garrett to capture them, all while discussing the 1990 brat pack western sequel Young Guns II! Starring Emilio Estevez, Kiefer Sutherland, Lou Diamond Phillips, Christian Slater, Alan Ruck, William Petersen, and Balthazar Getty, the film surrounds the real life legend of Billy the Kid during his time after the Lincoln County War and leading up to his demise at the hands of Pat Garrett. Steve Cooper talks with actor Alan Ruck. Alan is best known for his role as Cameron Frye, Ferris Bueller's hypochondriac best friend, in Ferris Buehler's Day Off and as Stuart Bondek, the lecherous, power-hungry member of the mayor's staff on the hit series Spin City. His first film role was in the 1983 drama film Bad Boys and has appeared in numerous films since then such as Class, Three for the Road, Young Guns II, Speed, Three Fugitives, Star Trek Generations, Extraordinary Measures, The Happening and Ghost Town. His long list of TV credits include Psych, Grey's Anatomy, Stargate Atlantis, Cougar Town, Drive, Scrubs, The Bronx is Burning, Medium, Burn Notice, Hawaii Five-O and NCIS.
