We hisses and praises, we bites and we breaks it down, precious. The acting, yess… the brave ones and the tricksy ones. The settings… ohhh the beautiful filthy places—Helm's Deep, Fangorn, and nasty Mordor. We loves it, we hates it… we analyzes it! We gives our precious opinions on the lore, the battles, and the burden of the ring. Is Gollum misunderstood? Is Frodo fading? What dis Sam's issue with Golem? We knows, we discusses! And the actors, precious—the actors! Viggo, Elijah, Andy Serkis... yesss, we talks about them too. So come listens, my loves… join us for a journey through the shadow and flame, through marshes and mountains. The second chapter is here, and it's raw and wriggling, just like you like it.

In this compelling episode, we explore the remarkable transformation of Dr. Viggo Olsen, a brilliant medical student and committed agnostic, who set out to disprove Christianity and ended up dedicating his life to sharing the gospel in Bangladesh. Dubbed by The New York Times as "another David Livingston," Olsen became a pioneer in medical missions, Bible translation, and church planting, serving faithfully in a predominantly Muslim country. Drawing on Psalm 19, we unpack Olsen's journey from skepticism to faith. His story reveals the power of creation to declare God's glory and the life-changing impact of a personal investigation into the claims of Christ. Through his study of science, Scripture, and prophecy, Olsen and his wife came to a life-altering conclusion—God is real, the Bible is true, and Jesus is alive. This episode offers valuable insights into how a former evolutionist and agnostic found undeniable proof of God's existence and the reliability of the Bible. It also includes Olsen's practical four-step method for making decisions in line with God's will. Tune in for an inspiring story of faith, wisdom, and a life devoted to serving both the physical and spiritual needs of others.

Send us a textIn this episode, we discuss what actors could play different characters in the upcoming TV show. Enjoy!Topics/Summary:·      Listen to episode 245 about the pitfalls of the TV show!·      3:46 Adam Driver plays Snape. Adam is younger than Alan, and that could be a closer representation of Snape because he isn't actually that old in the books. Additionally, Adam can portray a character of great emotional depth very well, and that is of course who Snape is.·      12:08 Ian McKellen plays Dumbledore. As Gandalf in the Lord of the Rings, Ian McKellen was an old, wise, and powerful wizard that had a big role in the fight for victory. He is the perfect choice for a character like this.·      16:33 Viggo Mortensen plays Sirius Black. Viggo is an honorable actor who plays honorable and brave characters. Sirius Black is a wrongly convicted criminal who spends the first part of his arc on the run and the second in the midst of the battle against Voldemort. That kind of acting is best suited for Viggo.·      19:58 Penelope Wilton plays Professor McGonagall. What we lose with Maggie Smith is the kinder edge from the books, so if Penelope were to go for a softer version of McGonagall, she might just be able to pull it off.·      22:03 Andy Serkis plays Peter Pettigrew. Andy often plays small, snively, often somewhat unstable characters. All of these things would make a perfect Peter Pettigrew.·      25:38 Benedict Cumberbatch plays Remus Lupin. Benedict has the air of carrying a very heavy weight on his shoulders, like a responsibility that he cannot shake. Lupin must keep the secret of his furry friend, and later bear the weight of his marriage and the turmoil of having a son. Having anything you want to hear or say? As season 4 draws to a close, I'm joined by someone all of you should know: Viggo Mortensen (The Lord of the Rings, The Road)! One thing you might not know about Viggo - it was certainly news to me - is that he's also a musician, making a number of albums with famed guitarist Buckethead and even scoring a couple films, including his latest directorial effort The Dead Don't Hurt. As such, we discuss his musical history, his score for The Dead Don't Hurt, his first foray into making music for film in The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, balancing various behind-the-scenes roles in the same film, and plenty more. Even though this is a pretty short interview, we cover a surprising amount of ground. Candidly, this was the most surreal, hard to believe interview I've ever done. When I saw Viggo pop up on video to chat with me, I was certain I was being pranked, or maybe just dreaming; I'm sure I'll wake up at any second... Viggo's score is available on all major platforms, while The Dead Don't Hurt has just finished its theatrical run and will likely be coming to home video soon. I also want to flag that I accidentally attribute a (poorly) paraphrased quote to Ernest Hemingway that's actually from Mark Twain.

It's another bumper, jam-packed edition of the Empire Podcast this week, folks, with four wonderful guests. First, legendary producer Jerry Bruckheimer, who has both Young Woman And The Sea and Bad Boys: Ride Or Die in cinemas right now, shares some of the secrets of his success with Alex Godfrey. [21:13 - 38:36 approx] Then, John Nugent has an audience with the Shyamalans — Ishana Night Shyamalan, writer and director of new horror, The Watched (aka The Watchers in the States), and her producer/second unit director, her father M. Night Shyamalan. [1:00:25 - 1:18:40 approx] And finally Chris Hewitt sits down on Zoom with the great Viggo Mortensen, who writes, directs, composes and stars in this week's Western, The Dead Don't Hurt. If you know anyone who worked at the Australian video store Viggo mentions in this interview, let us know. [1:35:41 - 1:55:06 approx] Either side of all that, Chris dials into the podbooth where Helen O'Hara and James Dyer are waiting, so they can discuss the best glasses in movies, chat about the week's movie news, including rumoured casting for Sam Mendes' Beatles biopics, and review Bad Boys: Ride Or Die, Ron Howard's documentary Jim Henson: Idea Man, The Dead Don't Hurt, and Hit Man, now that it's on Netflix. Enjoy!

What a week for movies! Megan and Dave watched writer/director/composer/co-star Viggo Mortensen's THE DEAD DON'T HURT (2:30), a bittersweet drama set in the 1860s. Viggo (the only actor Dave permits being called by first name, because it's fun to say “Viggo”) is Olsen, a Dane, and Vicky Krieps is Vivienne, a French-Canadian, who meet in San Francisco, fall in love, and make a life together in a tiny Nevada town. TDDH is Vivienne's movie, as it traces her tough, tender, and resilient character from childhood to adulthood. It's a dense story with lots of twists and turns (and too much to get into in this description) and superior performances by Viggo and especially Krieps, and Megan and Dave loved it. Then Evan, Megan, and Dave talk director D.W. Waterson's BACKSPOT (28:56), a drama about a high school cheerleading team with a cutthroat coach (Evan Rachel Wood) and a squad that will do almost anything to prove themselves. Riley (Devery Jacobs), the squad's backspotter, thirsts for the coach's approval, putting a strain on all of her relationships, especially with her girlfriend, Amanda (Kudakwashe Rutendo), who's also a teammate. We had divergent opinions on this one. And over on Patreon, Ang Lee's THE WEDDING BANQUET won our May poll! If you're a patron, you can listen here (and if you're not a patron, you can become one!).

Shat the Movies: 80's & 90's Best Film Review

Of all the '80s movies that needed a sequel, "Young Guns" wasn't one of them. But when you quadruple the budget, beef up the cast and toss in Christian Slater, the Shat Crew (and commissioner Kelly B.) certainly will saddle up. This 1990 Western is more "The Ballad of Brushy Bill Roberts" than an accurate retelling of the events following the Lincoln County War—with questionable wound care, incredible distances traveled, oddly accurate "wanted" posters, terrible Old Face and the notion that anyone would want to boink William Petersen. In this episode, hear about Big D's powwow adventure, play "Navajo or Shakespeare," learn how a Jenny Wright nude scene could possibly be a bad thing and decide whether Aragorn really needed to be in "Young Guns II."
