Talked with Amy Kight, Executive Director, Busch Wildlife Sanctuary. Busch Wildlife Sanctuary has a dual mission of wildlife rehabilitation and environmental education. They rescue sick, injured, or orphaned native Florida wildlife. They rely on the public to bring injured wildlife to our wildlife hospital. Over the years, we have treated deer, foxes, screech owls, hawks, bald eagles, squirrels, birds, and many others. There's a volunteer rescue team that is sent out to rescue animals that the public can't, such as raccoons, great blue herons, bobcats, foxes, etc... They release animals after they've been rehabilitated. Busch Wildlife offers a wide variety of programs to help educate the public about animals. Some of them are Wildlife encounters, hunters of the sky, mini and junior naturalists programs. They are in the process of moving/expanding to their new home, a 20 acre area, on Rocky Pines Road and Indiantown Road. They are open Monday through Saturday with free admission, donations are welcome. If listeners want to volunteer, donate, book a tour, report an injured animal, get more info, they can go to www.buschwildlife.org or call 561-575-3399 or email Amy at Director@buschwildlife.org

It was announced in 2020 that Busch Wildlife Sanctuary will be moving from its beloved home at the Loxahatchee River District to a new home, 5-miles down the road in a little place called Jupiter Farms. What will it be like to create a purpose-built sanctuary for the 200+ permanent residents of Busch, as well a new hospital servicing their rescue and rehabilitation efforts? And how do you move so many animals (like panthers, bears, alligators, eagles, otters, etc.)? We also learn about Busch’s roots and get a sneak-peak into what the new Sanctuary will look like. Join us for our last episode of Season 1 as we take a journey with David C. Guggenheim inside the Sanctuary which cares for injured, sick, orphaned and un-releasable native wildlife in southern Florida. It’s a place for healing; animal and human alike. It's also Spring, and that means, baby season at Busch! We go inside Busch’s nursery to meet the youngest members of the Busch family. All of them rescued by local members of the community and we learn the dos and don’ts when it comes to rescuing baby animals. To learn more about Busch Wildlife Sanctuary go to www.buschwildlife.org or you can call them anytime on their hotline: 561-575-3399. Support the show (https://buschwildlife.networkforgood.com/projects/120835-busch-wildlife-sanctuary-podcast)

Each year Busch Wildlife Sanctuary receives literally thousands of injured, sick and abandoned animals. How do they get to Busch, and what happens to them once they arrive? And most importantly, are they able to be re-released back into the wild after treatment? We answer those questions by following the fate of one particular pelican who was saved by local fisherman, Daniel Jones. Come with us this month as we meet Pelican 5679 and discover his fate.As we do each first-Monday of the month, take a journey with David C. Guggenheim inside this amazing Sanctuary which cares for injured, sick, orphaned and un-releasable native wildlife in southern Florida. It’s a place for healing; animal and human alike. We also get to meet Charlie, one of Busch’s two otters. While Charlie is undoubtedly cute, otters can be very aggressive and are vectors for rabies, so watch out if you ever encounter one in the wild. Charlie is special in that he is, what they call, “target trained” – what is that and why train a wild otter? Come find out.You will also have the privilege of meeting one very special panther, Makaya. She came to Busch after being used as a prop for family photos. Now, as a permanent resident of Busch, Makaya shows us why the panther is such a critical part of nature, and why the Florida Panther’s situation in the wild is so grim. You're listening to the Westerly Sun's podcast, where we talk about news, the best local events, new job postings, obituaries, and more. First, a bit of Rhode Island trivia. Today's trivia is brought to you by Perennial. Perennial's new plant-based drink “Daily Gut & Brain” is a blend of easily digestible nutrients crafted for gut and brain health. A convenient mini-meal, Daily Gut & Brain” is available now at the CVS Pharmacy in Wakefield. Did you know that Italian explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano explored the Rhode Island coast line in 1524? That was 112 years before Roger Williams arrived. If you feel inclined, you can still visit Verrazzano's family home in Tuscany. Now, we turn our feature story A pelican that got blown off course and was rescued in chilly Connecticut has been flown to Florida, where he is recovering from pneumonia and frostbite. The brown pelican, nicknamed Arvy, was rescued from the icy Connecticut River on Jan. 27. The bird, whose species is not typically seen in the Northeast, was taken to a bird rehabilitation facility in Killingworth, Connecticut, suffering from severe hypothermia. Christine Cummings, president of A Place Called Hope, told TV station WTNH: 'when Arvy first arrived, this poor bird couldn't even stand, couldn't lift his head,”. Cummings cared for the wayward bird nearly around the clock for about a week, feeding him fluids and food every three hours. The shorebird consumed some 4 pounds of fish daily with its 11-inch bill. Then on Thursday, volunteer pilots flew Arvy to his new home at Busch Wildlife Sanctuary in Jupiter, Florida, where he will continue recuperating until he is well enough to be released into the wild. Stephanie Franczak, the sanctuary's hospital director said that “Arvy looks good!” “His frostbite is minimal, but he has some wicked pneumonia from the cold. We will be providing fluid therapy, nebulizing treatments and supportive care while he is with us." His rescuers believe Arvy was blown north from Virginia Beach during a storm at sea. Carolina Young, spokesperson for the Florida sanctuary provided her assessment: “He is a Southern bird, he is not supposed to be north of the Carolinas and Virginia,” “I'm sure he was in shock when he was in that river.” To read the latest on this story and to see pictures of Arvy, head over to westerleysun.com.  There are a lot of businesses in our community that are hiring right now, so we're excited to tell you about some new job listings. Today's Job posting comes from the Weekapaug Inn in Westerly. They're looking for fine dining servers. Ideally, you have experience, are great with people, and can adhere to the Weekapaug Inn's Forbes five star standards. Pay is up $11.50-$20.00 per hour. If you're interested and think you'd be a good fit for the role you can apply using the link in our episode description. https://www.indeed.com/l-Westerly,-RI-jobs.html?advn=9173240314393757&vjk=da2b53289ff3e59d Today we're remembering the life of Giemma M. Bauerle, 104, of Westerly. She was George's beloved wife for 57 years. Born here, Giemma was a lifelong resident of Westerly, a faithful communicant of St. Pius X Catholic Church and a member of the Calabrese Women's Auxiliary. Giemma was devoted to her faith and her family and also a wonderful cook and homemaker. As her husband always said she was ""the best little wife in the world"". The family wishes to thank the many doctors, nurses, friends, and religious personnel who attended to her care. Thank you for taking a moment today to remember and celebrate Giemma's life. That's it for today, we'll be back next time with more! Also, remember to check out our sponsor Perennial, Daily Gut & Brain, available at the CVS on Main St. in Wakefield! Who saves the 7-foot alligator after its been hit by a truck? Or an otter after its been poisoned? Or a protected bird after getting shot? No one. Or at least no one if there wasn’t Busch Wildlife Sanctuary. But even Busch and its mission to rehabilitate and release wild animals back into the native lands, even Busch doesn’t have the financial ability to pay for a staff of rescuers to actually go out into the world and rescue the animals. That’s where volunteers come in. And it’s not an easy job. Dealing with whoever finds the animal, then finding the animal, catching it (taking in some cases up to hours to successfully complete) and hauling it back to Busch so the miracle workers there can give it the medical attention it needs. This is the story of how a couple of real-life superheroes inspired the creation of the Busch Wildlife Rescue team. As we do each first Monday of the month, take a journey with David C.
