Join us over the next several weeks as these bartenders share their experiences in the hospitality industry! In this episode of "The Mixing Glass", Molly Cummings talks about her choice to leave the world of academia behind to pursue opening a distillery with her family. We also take a deep dive into the main ingredients in gin - Juniper! Molly shares her stories in foraging local Texas Juniper and how to work with botanicals when developing your own spirits. ------------While being a Biology Professor at the University of Texas in Austin, Molly Cummings founded WildGins Co. —makers of the only gins in the world featuring native Texas Junipers. Of the 8 native Texas juniper species, Molly found the best two for gin in West Texas. WildBark West Texas Dry Gin features the Alligator Juniper—a juniper that grows above 5,000 ft in the West Texas Mountains— and is a bold Texas take on the classic London Dry. WildJune Western Style Gin features the Redberry Juniper—a juniper that grows only in the high plains of West Texas—and offers a wildly unique Texas spin on gin. WildGins honors our trees by putting the batch-specific tree names on their side labels—making them the world's first single-origin gin. WildGins Co. also preserves the lands that give us these unique Texas junipers by giving proceeds to the West Texas chapter of The Nature Conservancy with their ‘Give a Wild Buck' campaign. They invite you to ‘Take a Sip on the Wild Side' and Celebrate Texas Biodiversity with WildGins!----------Don't miss out on any of the action! The BBC gets in early with its “ten years since the Brexit Referendum” jamboree with a “star”-studded retro-documentary, Brexit: A Very British Civil War from legendary film-maker Norma Percy. Our panel bravely retraumatise themselves by watching it. What do we learn that's new? Who comes out of it worst: Cameron, Corbyn, Johnson, Seumas Milne, Gove, Osbourne or Cummings? Could anything have averted this catastrophe? And have any of these egotists and hobby-horsers learned a damn thing in the past decade? Plus, in related matters… Why do we believe what we believe? Why are conservatives more disgusted by disgusting things than liberals? And why (good news!) do liberals have more interesting sex? On the afternoon of July 18, 1984, James Huberty left his apartment in the San Ysidro neighborhood of San Diego, California, and drove one block over to the nearby McDonalds. After walking through the door of the restaurant, Huberty raised his Uzi semi-automatic 9mm and began indiscriminately shooting at patrons, employees, and anyone else who happened to cross into his line of sight. At the time, and for decades after, the San Ysidro McDonalds massacre was the worst mass shooting in American history, with the shooter killing twenty-one people and injuring nearly two dozen others before being struck down by a sniper's bullet. The incident lasted over an hour, during which time San Diego police and SWAT members surrounded the building, but didn't enter the building until an hour after the shooting started, when Huberty was already dead. Latest up from Spoken Label (Poetry Podcast) features making her debut, the amazing Alexis Brown.Alexis is a poet, writer, musician, and shamanic/Reiki practitioner originally from the United States, now based in Manchester with her wife Danielle and their two cats, Jade and Salem. Raised between New York and the American South, her relationship to language was shaped early through literature, music, queerness, spirituality, and the emotional landscapes that exist between people.Though classically trained in music with foundations in blues and jazz, poetry remains the art form most deeply connected to her soul. Influenced by writers such as E. E. Cummings, Walt Whitman, and Audre Lorde - alongside the lyrical intimacy of Meshell Ndegeocello - Alexis writes toward feeling rather than simple description. Her work explores love, longing, devotion, power dynamics, queer identity, spirituality, memory, and the ways human connection can transform us.Her poetry is often shaped by the people who have crossed her path as teachers, whether through tenderness, heartbreak, desire, or revelation. Alongside Danielle, she is currently developing a collaborative poetry collection tracing the chronology of their relationship - a love they often describe as ancient, oceanic, and timeless. Now rooted in Manchester's vibrant creative community, Alexis continues building both her literary voice and spiritual practice, drawn to art that evokes emotion as viscerally as music itself.Instagram - Greyyylex and Rainbowreikishamanism
"That's funny. I've never heard of a George Glass at our school." We watched "A Very Brady Sequel" with Friend of the Pod, author Elizabeth Teets, and we wish we could be gay again. It took us a few (hundred) episodes to get to it, but here we are. This movie could be considered a "quickie" sequel, but it has spawned more memes and firmly embedded itself in pop culture in its own right - "Sure Jan" and "Nice try Jan" very well may have outshined the popularity of the movie itself. But this movie is more than just memes - the cast is really working like a well-oiled machine. Christine Taylor and Jennifer Elise Cox as Marcia and Jan Brady really steal this movie, and their dysfunctional sisterhood is hilariously perfect. Jan's otherness really speaks to us as queer people, and Marcia's mean-girl backhanded comments are just top-notch. Our returning cast is all stellar here as well, and the cameos from Zsa Zsa Gabor, Rosie O'Donnell, David Spade, and the return of RuPaul as Guidance Counselor Mrs. Cummings are superb. We watch for the catty Marcia/Jan jibes, we stay for Gary Cole/Tim Matheson battle of the hunky dads. This episode has so much. We cover the Jewel Box Revue, the drag show that originated in the thirties and toured through the seventies creating a space for drag, female impersonators and gender bent comics in a show that advertised itself as 25 men and 1 girl. We also cover anti-crossdressing laws, the police's informal three article rule and how newspapers at the time published the names of those arrested for cross dressing, performing drag, or even just being openly gay. We talk about how drag shows came up from French cabarets like the Moulin Rouge and the Folies Bergere and morphed into something different and special in America. We also discuss Club 82, the New York nightspot run by the Gallo crime family that made a safe place in New York for drag long before Pride Marches and rainbow flags. We even discuss how movies like La Cage Au Folles, The Rocky Horror Picture Show,,The Birdcage, Priscilla Queen of the Desert and To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar owe a lot of their DNA to these early expressions of queer joy and drag glamour. These were some of the earliest safe spaces in America and we owe them a lot. So come along on this celebration of LGBTQ history and found family! It's fun and we guarantee you will learn something! This week on Own It we're talking to Jenna Cummings from Rival. She is originally from Spokane, Washington, but is now based in London, England. One of the things she says she loves about ownership and the advertising business is the ability to live and work anywhere and enjoy a global lifestyle. Rival is an agency focused on helping challenger brands become blue chip ones, primarily through leveraging research, data and marketing technology to do so. That's where Jenna's skills come to the table in a big way. She oversees all things paid media, data and martech. We talked about why her motorcycle is named after her grandmother, where her journey to ownership took her, and her thoughts about closing the gender gap in agency ownership. The best thing about hosting this podcast is the amazing people, perspectives and ideas we get to hear from our guests. This episode certainly delivers on those promises. Introduction to solution Green banks “provide financing and technical assistance for clean energy and climate solutions” while driving “economic, health, and environmental benefits for communities across the country” (US Green Bank 50). They attempt to spend, save, and invest people's money conscientiously so they “can grow [their] money while making the world a better place” (GreenFi). Background The fossil fuel industry is the primary driver of our climate crisis, creating an imperative to implement reductions of greenhouse gas as soon as possible to minimize the potential for catastrophic impacts. Unfortunately, traditional banks have exacerbated this problem; specifically, they have “financed fossil fuels by $7.9 trillion dollars since the Paris Agreement,” enabling the building of new oil and gas pipelines, large-scale equipment purchases, and more oil and gas explorations to expand their businesses (Rainforest Action Network). Advantages of Climate-Friendly Banks Green banks pledge to never fund projects involving fossil fuels. Many also donate a percentage of the monthly amount that customers pay to “non-profits that support climate action” while providing transparency about the carbon footprints of their funded businesses (GreenFi). Some “optimistic studies even estimate that [this] divestment [of resources]… can lead to an effective reduction in carbon footprint of up to 7%” (Mieux Donner). Drawbacks of this Solution However, critics argue that the impact of divestment is not equal to the carbon impact of the investment: “under the current system, divested funds can be quickly replaced by other investors, which limits the direct effect on the behaviour of companies and their CO2 emissions” (Mieux Donner). Companies can also adjust their financial strategies to offset the impact of divestment, which limits its effect on their emissions. Specifically, while green banking is well-intentioned, staying with a conventional bank may allow customers to save more money, which they could then donate to high-impact environmental nonprofits. Guest's take Charley Cummings, the CEO of a climate-friendly bank known as Walden Mutual, emphasizes how the largest funders of fossil fuel companies are banks in the United States. He encourages listeners to switch to greener banks that divest their funds towards sustainability while remaining as reliable as traditional banks. We're excited to share another episode of The Intercept's new podcast Collateral Damage. The investigative series examines the half-century-long war on drugs, its enduring ripple effects, and the devastating consequences of building a massive war machine aimed at the public itself. Hosted by Radley Balko, an investigative journalist who has been covering the drug war and the criminal justice system for more than 20 years, each episode takes an in-depth look at someone who was unjustly killed in the drug war. Veronica and Charity Bowers, a young Christian missionary and her daughter, are killed when the Peruvian Air Force shoots down a small passenger plane in 2001. The plane had been mistaken for a drug smuggling plane and was shot down as part of a joint anti-drug agreement between the CIA and the Colombian and Peruvian governments.President Donald Trump has made the Bowers's deaths newly and urgently relevant since he began ordering the U.S. military to strike down alleged drug smuggling boats in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific Ocean in September 2025. By early November, the U.S. had launched a total of 17 strikes, killing at least 70 people, and those figures seem to grow almost by the day. The attacks are illegal under both U.S. and international law. The administration also provided no documentation of the alleged drug trafficking. The attack on the Bowers family pierced the veil that obscures drug war foreign policy because of their nationality, skin color, and relatability. More than 20 years ago, House Oversight Committee hearing members Jan Schakowsky and Elijah Cummings demanded accountability after U.S. drug interdiction forces killed the Bowers. They demanded to know how such a mistake could happen, and how we could prevent the loss of innocent life going forward.“The kind of action we saw in Peru … amounts to an extrajudicial killing,” said Schakowsky at the time. Cummings added, “The Peruvian shootdown policy would never be permitted as a domestic United States policy precisely because it goes against one of our most sacred, due process principles — namely, that all persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty.”Now, a new administration openly celebrates summary execution of alleged drug smugglers without a hint of due process, and is now threatening to topple another government to prevent the U.S. from sating its appetite for illicit drugs. The story of Veronica and Charity Bowers is a stark reminder of how aggressive drug policy is wasteful and futile, how we never seem to learn from past failures, and how the generations-long effort to stop people from getting high also — and necessarily — treats human lives as expendable.Subscribe and listen to the full series on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you listen.
