When you think about our military, we go through boot camp. We put people through a lot of days and days of work to get them ready and steeled for war. But when it's time to leave the military, I think it's something like half a day of reclamation training, and it leaves a lot of veterans frustrated and unable to integrate back into society. That's why I love putting a loving spotlight on some amazing non-profits, and the the folks in the studio today are with Hooves for Heroes: Ruth Shim and Chris Alpert.

Everyone's got a favorite disease movie. What's yours? Does it feature zombies like 28 Days Later (2002), or is it more grounded in reality, like Contagion (2011)? Does it end with a glimmer of hope or with a dose of despair? Who are the bad guys and who are the good guys? From the early days of disease movies like Panic in the Streets (1950) to more recent films like Little Joe (2019), these movies have provided endless entertainment, excitement, and opportunities to examine society itself. In this TPWKY book club episode, Robert Alpert, Dr. Merle Eisenberg, and Dr. Lee Mordechai join us to discuss their book Diseased Cinema: Plagues, Pandemics, and Zombies in American Movies. Diseased Cinema approaches the genre of disease-themed movies with the goal of understanding what these movies say about our hopes, our fears, our anxieties, and how these perspectives have shifted over the decades. When did faith in our government's problem solving give way to rugged self-reliance? Why did people start to view science as the bad guy rather than the source of salvation? Tune in for a fascinating discussion that will stay on your mind long after your next movie night. And also check out Merle and Lee's excellent podcast Infectious Historians! Most of Herb Alpert's albums are thrift store mainstays, with Whipped Cream and Other Delights being the most recognizable. However, the reason there are so many is because the music, unlike a lot of easy listening at the time, was enjoyable to a wide arrange of listeners and of consistent quality from album to album. Still, 1965 seemed like one of the best years for Alpert, as his band, originally session musicians, became an actual unit. !!Going Places!!, Alpert's second release in 1965 and follow-up to Whipped Cream, is one of the best examples of his sound and managed keep those hits coming.

Blame it on the Bossa Nova's magic spell that the Samba craze swept the nation in the mid-‘60s. And, two of the main proponents of this joyful, sun-splashed celebration were Sergio Mendes and Herb Alpert. Herbie had the record label, A&M, and Sergio had the secret sauce, not to mention the lovely lead singer Lani Hall, who later became Mrs. Alpert. Mas Que Nada, translated from the Portuguese, means “Whatever,” and the lyrics are insisting that whatever else may be happening, the singer passionately craves the Samba. The rolling syncopation of Mendes's piano, along with the percussion and the siren call of Lani and her partner Janis make the seduction irresistible: this is just, good sexy fun, and you don't have to understand the lyrics to get the message. The song, originally written, recorded, and made a hit in Brasil by Jorge Ben, was spread around the world by Sergio and Herbie, making it to #47 on the Billboard Top 100. I hope that the tune's creator took some pride and pleasure it that - (along with the royalties)… so, “whatever!”

We're going to take a little side road along our musical journey for this episode. It's not something I often do, especially in my youth, but I'm going to make a big deal out of my birthday this year, since it actually falls on a day I publish my episodes. 62 is not a milestone. There is no special celebration with my high school classmates, since next year we'll be celebrating at our 45-year reunion. In fact, I better get busy and call a meeting since I am currently the chair of the reunion committee. In that vein, I am going to pull out an album filled with plenty of songs you've already heard on this show, but they all appear on this one disk. Author of numerous bestselling books, Mark Alpert is a contributing editor at Scientific American. In the first half, he discussed ideas emerging beyond string theory and the frontiers of fundamental physics, including the latest concepts about mysterious dark energy and dark matter, which are thought to compose most of the universe. While scientists cannot directly observe these phenomena, dark matter seems to hold galaxies together, and dark energy appears to be accelerating the expansion of the universe, he explained. String theory, an attempt to develop a single set of equations that would explain both the very large objects of the universe and the movement of subatomic particles, has proved to be a disappointment and not yield any experimental evidence, he revealed. What has recently excited Alpert about science and physics is a new focus on evidence gathering about the fundamental nature of the universe, particularly from astronomers. For instance, researchers at the Kitt Peak National Observatory in Arizona have equipped one of their telescopes with an ultra-sophisticated machine called the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI), which uses thousands of tiny robotic devices to enable precise measurements of the distance and velocity of millions of galaxies. They learned from these studies that the universe's expansion is accelerating, but not as fast in the more recent epochs. This information may change the concept of dark energy, pointing toward the idea that it's something like a scalar field that can fluctuate over time, he marveled, and this could mean that the universe might expand or contract at different rates.---------------Elson M. Haas, MD, is an integrative family medicine practitioner with more than 40 years of experience as a physician. In the latter half, he talked about how we can turn our health around by paying attention to what our body is telling us and detoxing from things like sugar, alcohol, caffeine, negative self-talk, and poor lifestyle choices. Through taking a few weeks off from a habit, we can embrace a new feeling by not being dependent on it, such as caffeine for energy, he noted. Haas is an advocate for moderate exercise, which can improve mental health by increasing the flow of endorphins. "I think people need a good balance of stretching...to get flexibility, weights for strength, and cardio for endurance," he said.Another of his recommendations is to practice slow, deep breathing, which can be mentally calming and healing. He uses an individualized approach to supplementation with his clients, as each person has different needs, he explained. He also believes a meditative approach to one's life can have a healing effect. "You're not your thoughts. So the more you can sit back and watch them and let go...you're getting more peace in your body," he remarked. Starting on Saturday, April 27th, Dr. Haas will be conducting an online Whole Self Detox program, which addresses four different aspects-- physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual (he is offering $50 off, when you register put in Noory50 for the discount). --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/georgenoory/message

Herb Alpert: you'll never find a more beloved figure in the pop music world. A mensch. Did you think he was Latin? Nope. He IS an Angeleno, but….he was a Jewish kid, born in Boyle Heights; went to Fairfax High and USC. Before “cultural appropriation” became a dirty word, Herbie had a revelation while attending a bullfight in Baja - came back with “The Lonely Bull”, and ignited a career that has won him a Tony, 8 Grammies, and, a National Medal of Arts. He is the only musician to have #1 hits, both as a vocalist and instrumentalist. In his mid-sixties heyday he outsold The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and Frank Sinatra. Always smiling behind his trumpet, the handsome Mr. Alpert became an unlikely pin-up, then he scored big-time as a record producer and mogul (with partner Jerry Moss), and today, at 88, as an artist of renown, crafting massive sculptural installations and paintings, he continues to thrive creatively. I guess you could say that in addition to being a dedicated, hard worker, that he also was blessed. The Mexican Shuffle, (or, as some may remember from the chewing gum commercials)- The Teaberry Shuffle, was ubiquitous. It was all over the tv. This is happy music, pure and simple. In the ad folks of all walks of life, just going about their business, start dancing whenever they pop in a stick of Teaberry gum. And, Herbie's percolating soundtrack conveys that propulsion perfectly. (I recommend YouTubing it). The record received a sizable boost of recognition from this exposure - as did A Taste Of Honey (from the Whipped Cream and Other Delights album) - as The Dating Game theme song. Along with Motown and The Beatles, Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass were the soundtrack of the 60s.

In this interview, I had the pleasure of having a wonderful conversation with Tomer Alpert, CEO of FELT.His company is helping rebuild the human connection. Technology has helped change our entire world, how we interact, learn, etc. and it will continue to do so with AI and many more technological advancements but one thing that has become less and less through this process is the human connection. From text messaging, and getting happy birthday comments on social media, to posts that share your love for your spouse. It is a quick dopamine hit but by the next day, it is gone.We continue to experience these dopamine hits without longer-lasting effects. But there is an old method of sharing our affection, love, or just a thought to someone which is a handwritten letter. The power of writing from a vibrational standpoint is palpable. Remember the last time you received a handwritten letter or thank you card? How did it make you feel? Did it leave a lasting impression? Did it affect you in a different way than what a text message may do?This is what Tomer and I discussed in depth in this episode and he shares how he has taken technology to be able to use the wonderful benefits of it but still have the handwritten letter effects through his app and the work his company does.Check out the podcast episode today and share with us what your thoughts are…Who is Tomer Alpert?TOMER ALPERT is pioneering how to use social technology to make us feel more connected, valued and special; Not less. He's brought his talent for authentically relating and his love of innovation to create Felt — A social app for your real friends in the real world. With Felt you can send each other cards in the mail without needing to know an address. You can create super personal cards using your photos and a personal message and then Felt will print, seal, stamp and mail it within 24hrs! Best of all, your friend can touch, hold and keep the card forever. They'll feel more loved, cherished and special. And so will you, as soon as they send you a card back. Felt is bringing the heart and soul to social. Three days ago, Danielle and Adam dropped their daughter, Mia, off for her freshman year at college. But getting to this point was nothing short of a rollercoaster of a journey. In this episode, Danielle and her sister, Life Coach Amy, discuss what they've both learned about preparing our kids (and ourselves) for the post-high school phase. Amy has sent her two kids off to college, and helps other moms deal with this transitional time of life filled with so much change and uncertainty. Some topics the two discuss are:How struggles are actually necessary and beneficial for our kids preparing to go away for school. Why it's essential that our kids concentrate on life skills that aren't taught in school or most extra-curricular activities. What one thing is making this whole process so much easier for Danielle, and why she wants every parent to understand how important it is to help our children follow their natural course. How Amy has navigated having a child at school who doesn't communicate as much as she would like. What essential skills should kids know before heading off to college or into "the real world?"How to find the good in each situation, even if it feels far from perfect.Subscribe to Life Coach Amy Alpert's amazing must-read newsletter, and follow her on substack.
