The real (?) boogeyman who snatched children and disappeared them into the old woods and forgotten tunnels of Staten Island. Who is Cropsey? Who is Andre Rand? Serial killer(s) + cults + conspiracy theories + one obsessed journalist + one great documentarian = Sons of Sam! Many have heard of the serial killer David Berkowitz aka the Son of Sam who murdered way too many people in NYC back in the 70s, but Muriel just watched the Netflix true crime series “The Sons of Sam: A Descent Into Darkness” and she wants you all (and Nick) to hear about author Maury Terry's theory that Berkowitz did not act alone. Documentarian Joshua Zeman (one of Muriel's favorites) breaks down Terry's version of events, and now it's time for Muriel to break it down. Our next two episodes will also celebrate the work of Joshua Zeman. Thank you Liz F for signing up at www.patreon.com/murielsmurders - our hearts sing for you! A genomic whale of a story Things aren't always what they seem on the surface, especially when it comes to our oceans. So many mysteries hum below its watery surface. So, you may just have to use your ears when it's too dark to see exactly what's going on down there.Dr. Kaylee Byers looks into the ocean giants that lurk in the depths and the unique songs they share with us. She sits down with whale biologist Dr. Jennifer Allen on how whale songs are imparting a cultural exchange between populations that are hundreds of miles apart. Filmmaker Joshua Zeman shares his journey to find the infamously dubbed 'Loneliest Whale'. And Paeleobiologist Dr. Travis Park from the Museum of Natural History in London tells us how whales developed their unique singing superpowers by taking us back through millions of years of evolution. Finally, researcher Grace Baer brings us to a remote west coast station studying whale populations and the effects of ocean traffic noise. It's a whale-sized episode taking you on a listening journey into this wonderful watery world!Click here for this episode's Learn-A-Long!CREDITS: Special thanks to Captain Gaelen Krause of the Island Odyssey, for capturing recordings on his journey to search for whales along the British Columbia coast. It's spooky season, campers, and what's a better way to celebrate than to dig into some urban legends? You know the ones we're talking about—the razor blades in the Halloween candy, the call coming from INSIDE THE HOUSE, Bloody Mary in the mirror. That kinda stuff. We all have our favorites. But what happens when the legend comes true? Do some of these stories have roots in real crimes? Well, we're gonna find out—and who better to help us than Joshua Zeman, award-winning director of our *favorite* true crime documentaries, "Killer Legends" and "Cropsey?" Documentary filmmaker and director, Joshua Zeman, returns with a brand-new doc, “The Loneliest Whale: The Search For 52,” available now in theaters and on demand (https://bleeckerstreetmedia.com/the-loneliest-whale). It's a departure from his typical true crime stories (aka “Cropsey,” “Murder Mountain,” “Sons of Sam”), and instead embarks on an expedition to find the one rare whale in the ocean that sings at its own frequency (52 hertz), and why scientists believe this whale has lived its whole life in complete solitude! Josh explains how one kickstarter campaign got the ball rolling on this journey, how and when actors Leonardo DiCaprio and Adrian Grenier of “Entourage” fame got involved, and what it was like to spend 7 days on the ocean searching for and tagging whales. He recounts some of their open sea adventures, how the story evolved into more than just the “Search for 52,” and some of the unexpected help they encountered along the way.

“I hope that film and the story can help people get their heads around these huge ideas that are pretty terrifying and almost hopeless to think about. What can we do? Are we on this track? What have we done to the earth? I think scientists are very much starting to agree that it's getting to the point where it's almost too late. So can humans see that far ahead? Can we understand the track we're on in time? I don't know, but I'm willing to use whatever tools possible to try to help that conversation happen.”Director of photography Alan Jacobsen photographs narrative and documentary projects with an authentic, natural eye and sensitive curiosity. Summer 1977. New York City. A turbulent time in the five boroughs perhaps like no other in modern history. An economic crisis, a historic blackout and the haunting presence of a brutal serial killer. In August of that year, David Berkowitz was arrested and admitted to the attacks, ending some of the pressure. Now decades later, there are new questions. Did the .44 Caliber killer really act alone? A new Netflix series, The Sons of Sam: A Descent Into Darkness explores this theory. The Tape Room sits down with the director Joshua Zeman.

During the filming of his award-winning documentary, Cropsey, Director Joshua Zeman begins a correspondence with Maury Terry, author of The Ultimate Evil, a book which delves into the theory that the Son of Sam murders involved a nationwide satanic cult and more than one person. When Zeman and Executive Producer Caitlin Colford receive boxes and boxes of Terry's research, the pair embark on a journey which results in the Netflix docuseries "The Sons of Sam: A Descent Into Darkness", a cautionary tale about the search for truth and the price one man pays to take that journey. Jason Cousineau and Eric Renderking Fisk long-awaited conversation about the Netflix Documentary Series “The Sons Of Sam” by director/producer Joshua Zeman who also brought us “Cropsey” and “Killer Legends.” Jay and Eric also try and make links between MKULTRA, Zodiac, and The Manson Family through the circumstantial connections or strange coincidences and similar locations. Could there be a connection between Dr. Sidney Gottlieb's black-ops projects and the Satanic Cult “The ProcessProcess Church of the Final Judgment?” Is there overlap between Maury Terry's book “The Ultimate Evil: The Search for the Sons of Sam,” and Tom O'Neil's “Chaos: Charles Manson, the CIA, and the Secret History of the Sixties?” And how else do serial killers meet up and become collaborators besides local cult gatherings? If they can find each other so easily and work together, why can't the local police nor FBI find them, too? Dedicated to Carolyn in Arizona, thank you for all your support! And special thanks to Joshua Zeman and Gwen Doreen Kubberness and to the memory of Maury Terry.

His camerawork is masterful, intuitive and intimate, capturing the sensory story in each powerful frame. Most recently, he wrapped the upcoming The Loneliest Whale: The Search for 52, a feature length documentary about the loneliest whale in the world, with director Joshua Zeman. Other films lensed by Jacobsen have earned film festival honors: two-time Oscar-nominated director Marshall Curry's Racing Dreams and Point and Shoot, both of which received the Grand Jury Prize for Best Documentary at the Tribeca Film Festival; Toe to Toe with director Emily Abt, which won him the Best Cinematography Award nomination at Sundance Film Festival; and The Trials of Darryl Hunt, nominated for the Sundance Grand Jury, Independent Spirit, International Documentary Association and Emmy awards.· www.alanjax.com · www.creativeprocess.info· www.oneplanetpodcast.orgImage Courtesy of Bleecker Street
During the filming of his award-winning documentary, Cropsey, Director Joshua Zeman begins a correspondence with Maury Terry, author of The Ultimate Evil, a book which delves into the theory that the Son of Sam murders involved a nationwide satanic cult and more than one person. When Zeman and Producer Caitlin Colford receive boxes and boxes of Terry's research, the pair embark on a journey which results in the Netflix docuseries "The Sons of Sam: A Descent Into Darkness", a cautionary tale about the search for truth and the price one man pays to take that journey. THE LONELIEST WHALE: THE SEARCH FOR 52 is a cinematic quest to find the “52 Hertz Whale,” which scientists believe has spent its entire life in solitude calling out at a frequency that is different from any other whale. As the film embarks on this engrossing journey, audiences will explore what this whale's lonely plight can teach us — not just about our changing relationship to the oceans, but to each other. This is the only film that set out in search of 52. The 52 Hertz Whale was originally discovered in 1989. Over the last 3 decades 52 has become a global sensation capturing the hearts of fans around the world. This whale's story has been featured in The New York Times, The Washington Post, Business Insider and more. Most recently the British Indie Rock band Amber Run and the K-pop band BTS have written songs about the whale. Award winning filmmaker Joshua Zeman has been at the forefront of investigative documentaries for the past decade. His most recent work was the hit Netflix documentary series, THE SONS OF SAM: DESCENT INTO DARKNESS. His critically-acclaimed film CROPSEY, a look into the disappearance of five children, is considered to be one of most terrifying horror documentaries of all time. Director Joshua Zeman joins us for a conversation on the primordial fascination that whales exert over humans, the impact his first encounter with Blue Whale had on him, how “singing Humpbacks saved whales for being hunted into extinction and why 52's story has captured a world-wide audience. From 1976-1977, a serial killer calling himself the Son of Sam terrorized New York City. 8 shootings left 6 young people dead and 7 injured. The NYPD investigated over 3000 suspects- but it was a parking ticket that finally led them to their man. And when they got him? He blamed it on a 6000 year old demon speaking to him from a neighbor's dog. Join us for part one of our deep dive into Son of Sam! It's a solid fact that we can't talk about summer camp without also talking about one of our favorite subgenres of horror movies... the Summer Camp Slasher! Let's face it - we grew up with some great, iconic franchises in the Summer Camp Slasher genre. The first few that come to mind of course being the FRIDAY THE 13TH movies and SLEEPAWAY CAMP - but, we wanted to find some really good from the '80s that we hadn't necessarily seen yet. We immediately stumbled across THE BURNING - a 1981 release that neither of us had watched before. We thought this episode was going to just be about our thoughts on that movie, and why we love the subgenre... Instead, we uncovered an urban legend called "The Cropsey Maniac", that potentially spawned all of these Summer Camp Slasher movies and the campfire tales we all grew up listening to ourselves. If that wasn't enough we also uncovered a 2009 documentary called "CROPSEY" - written and directed by Joshua Zeman & Barbara Brancacci who realizing the urban legend of their youth has actually come true; delve into the even more terrifying mystery surrounding five missing children and the real-life boogeyman linked to their disappearances. Get ready to laugh as we go over some of our own personal summer camp experiences. Get ready to get spooky as we talk about the monster lurking outside your tents...and as always, BE RAD! Thank you so much for listening. ---- SHOW INFO

The Son of Sam case grew into a lifelong obsession for journalist Maury Terry, who became convinced that the murders were linked to a satanic cult. Author Maury Terry becomes convinced that serial killer David Berkowitz did not act alone and tries to prove that the web of darkness behind the Son of Sam murders goes deeper than anyone imagined -- and his investigation costs him everything. The hunt for the "Son of Sam" captivated the world in the late 1970s, but the story behind one of America's most notorious serial murderers is all but forgotten -- until now. While the arrest and conviction of David Berkowitz brought the nightmare to an end for many New Yorkers, for journalist and Ultimate Evil author Maury Terry, the real mystery was just beginning. Terry, convinced Berkowitz had not acted alone, would go on to spend decades attempting to prove that the web of darkness behind the murders went deeper than anyone imagined -- and his pursuit of that elusive truth would eventually cost him everything. Filmmaker Joshua Zeman (CROPSEY, MURDER MOUNTAIN) draws on archival news footage, conversations with the people closest to the investigation, and Terry's own words and case files to tell a cautionary tale of a man who went down a rabbit hole and never came out. But was Maury Terry just chasing ghosts -- or are the true Sons of Sam still out there..Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/houseofmysteryradio. It's one of the most famous serial killer cases in history, and now director Joshua Zeman provides a fresh perspective on the Son of Sam murders, which terrorized New York City from the summer of 1976 to July of 1977. Josh's new, four-part Netflix documentary, “The Sons Of Sam: A Descent Into Darkness,” goes in-depth on the investigation conducted by journalist Maury Terry, who never believed that convicted Son of Sam killer David Berkowitz acted alone. Maury spent years doing his own investigation, and shared his case file with Josh Zeman before Maury's death in 2015. Josh walks us through Maury's case which documents Satanic rituals, cults, a connection to Charles Manson, and the real Sons of Sam whom Maury believes were part of the murders and most likely goaded David Berkowitz into joining them in the killings.

This episode contains *spoilers* so make sure to watch the entire series of "The Sons of Sam" on Netflix before listening on.When the “Son of Sam,” David Berkowitz was caught in the summer of 1977 after a string of shooting attacks in New York City, the world believed the nightmare was over, but for journalist Maury Terry, the real mystery was just beginning. Terry was convinced that Berkowitz had not acted alone. He spent decades attempting to prove that the web of darkness behind the murders went deeper than anyone imagined. In this episode, our host Rebecca Lavoie is joined by Joshua Zeman, the director and executive producer of the docu-series "The Sons of Sam."
The Son of Sam shooter was one of the biggest stories in New York, and after David Berkowitz was arrested, most people thought the story was over. But for journalist Maury Terry, many questions remained unanswered. Terry was convinced Berkowitz had not acted alone and spent decades digging into the story. A new Netflix docuseries, “The Sons of Sam: A Descent Into Darkness," examines Terry’s investigation. Director and executive producer Joshua Zeman joins us to discuss making the series. This segment is guest-hosted by Matt Katz.
On today’s show, we’re taking a break from our usual format to premiere a new original Netflix podcast: “Searching for The Sons of Sam.”From Tenderfoot TV and true crime director Joshua Zeman comes a 5-part audio documentary about Zeman’s relationship with the late journalist Maury Terry. Terry’s book, “The Ultimate Evil,” lays out his case that the Son of Sam murders were carried out by multiple members of a satanic cult. After Terry’s death, Zeman inherited all of his case files. “Searching for The Sons of Sam” is the companion podcast to Zeman’s Netflix docu-series, “The Sons of Sam: A Descent into Darkness,” which retraces Maury Terry’s investigation into who was really behind one of America’s most notorious serial killings. It's our pleasure to present to you the world premiere of the podcast: Searching for the Sons of Sam - Episode 1: The Ultimate Evil.

Although, most of these urban legends have some sort of truthful origination to them, it typically only serves the purpose of making the story seem more believable. Many kids know the fears that have been created in their hearts from stories like this all too well. But, deep down, it is also known that even though it is scary…it really isn’t completely true. But what if you found out that the story that you grew up hearing, whether you ignored the warnings or your didn’t, turned out to be real? Murder Mountain is a documentary series on Netflix which is directed by Joshua Zeman - it takes a look at the legendary emerald triangle in California. This region is also infamous for another reason, hence why it gets the name Murder Mountain...It's estimated that 80% of the blackmarket cannabis in the US historically comes from the emerald triangle, so how did it start? Who lives and grows there? Why do so many people fear the region? And why has it become known as the new Wild West? With marijuana now legal in California, we also have to ask how has this process impacted the traditional 'mom & pop' growers of the region? And also, how has the law enforcement handled this whole story, both past and present? There's a lot to talk about in this episode, and Josh gives us a great deal of perspective. This episode of Stop and Search is in association with LEAP - Law Enforcement Action Partnership. Our True Crime month of Mayhem rolls on.Today it's the 2009 film Cropsey by Joshua Zeman and Barbara Brancaccio and our guest is Andy Sell.Staten Island’s tight knit community was the site of a series of child disappearances throughout the 70s and 80s. The police found one suspect, but could this one man account for the bogeyman legend of Cropsey? Was he working alone, or was he the wrong man altogether? Cropsey is like a horror movie come to terrifying life.Andy Sell is a comedian, actor, and writer who has been obsessed with horror movies since he started watching them at an arguably inappropriate age. Born in Iowa, Andy graduated film school from a college in New Mexico that no longer exists and currently resides in the Los Angeles area where he co-produces the monthly storytelling show, We Still Like You. Andy has performed at comedy shows and festivals across the country. He has no representation but still managed to co-write and co-star in a Comedy Central snapchat series called Nostalgia-rama in 2016, and act in a principle role in the neo-noir feature film, Los Angeles Overnight (now available on Amazon). Andy worked for Ray Bradbury's Pandemonium Theatre Company, has officiated four weddings, mains Junkrat on Overwatch (but will fill as healer), loves cats, and is candid about mental health onstage. He is followed on Twitter by some pretty cool well-known people despite not being verified, but doesn't want to drop names (but like, you would totally be jealous). If you want to hear Andy (and producer and co-host Adam Tod Brown) talk about horror movie history, check out the podcast Ghoul School when it hits the Unpops network and the usual podcast places. Did the part about not having representation come off as bitter or just desperate? What about the Twitter thing, that was too much, right? Either way, he wants an agent. Growing up on Staten Island, filmmakers Joshua Zeman and Barbara Brancaccio had often heard the legend of ‘Cropsey.’ For the kids in their neighborhood, Cropsey was the escaped mental patient who lived in the old abandoned Willowbrook Mental Institution, who would come out late at night and snatch children off the streets. Later as teenagers, the filmmakers assumed Cropsey was just an urban legend. That all changed in the summer of 1987 when a 12-year-old girl disappeared from their community. The police quickly connected this disappearance to several other children who'd gone missing in the area. The hunt for the abductor would lead authorities to the real-life boogeyman living in their midst.

In an riveting and exclusive followup to a recent episode of After Hours AM/America’s Most Haunted Radio with hosts Joel Sturgis and Eric Olsen — we talk with documentary filmmakers Josh Zeman and Rachel Mills about new evidence that has come forth since the recent airing of their true crime documentary series, THE KILLING SEASON. Josh and Rachel will break new developments in the Long Island Serial Killer case in hour 2, when we also be joined by forensic psychologist Dr. Clarissa Cole. In hour 1, Joel and Eric will delve the week’s paranormal news and give thoughts on the new year. True crime documentaries often shed new light on old cases, sometimes they even turn up new evidence, but rarely does an investigative documentary become the impetus behind the reexamination of a whole category of unsolved cases across the nation, turn up significant new evidence, and get at least one case officially reopened. Such is the case with Josh Zeman and Rachel Mills’ THE KILLING SEASON, which just ran in eight one-hour episodes on A&E. We talked with Josh and Rachel back in November before the show premiered and were astonished with what they accomplished in the course of the series, which began with a fresh look at the unsolved Long Island Serial Killer series of murders and broadened out to include a possible network of serial killers of young women across the nation. Most of the women were involved with drugs and the sex trade and not necessarily high on law enforcement’s list of priorities, but every person counts — or should count — and a rash of unsolved serial killings is a rot that goes to the very core of the nation’s moral fabric, and a network of serial killers in communication with each other should strike terror in every heart. “Peaches” killing evidence courtesy Long Island Press What even more astonishing, though — and why we have brought Josh and Rac

A&E Network has set a November premiere for The Killing Season docuseries, from Oscar-winning executive producer Alex Gibney (Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief). The eight-episode series follows documentarians Joshua Zeman (Cropsey) and Rachel Mills as they investigate one of the most bizarre unsolved serial killer cases of our time – the deaths of ten sex workers discovered on Gilgo Beach, Long Island. Authorities believe these killings are the work of the Long Island Serial Killer, who after five years remains at large. Forging relationships with cyber-sleuths, journalists and victims’ families, Zeman and Mills uncover connections that suggest Long Island is just the beginning. Through their investigation, the pair discover connections to unsolved murders from Atlantic City to Daytona Beach and beyond, revealing that serial killers are targeting sex workers in record numbers, while using the internet as their virtual hunting ground. The Killing Season will premiere with back-to-back episodes November 12th. THE KILLING SEASON-Joshua Zeman and Rachel Mills
Whether our parents warned about strangers with candy in windowless vans, or creepy clown gangs, or a deranged loner hiding in the woods; we were all subjected to cautionary tales in one form or another. Scare tactics are integral to parenting, apparently. We shrugged off the stories, or elaborated on the ideas and shared them with peers while holding flashlights under our chins. We may have been leery of men who looked like the silhouette on the neighborhood watch sign. We might have run out of the woods when we came upon a boot print, or imagined a sinister side to the Shriners in clown white who lead the parade. We probably never considered that these manufactured monsters might be real for longer than a moment. What if they were? This was a question addressed by filmmaker Joshua Zeman in his documentary feature, CROPSEY. He joins us this week to talk about the powerful intersection of legends and reality, and the effects that stories have on our perceptions. We'll explore why society needs to believe in monsters, and what happens when the creatures we build in our imaginations come to life. "Spooky Southcoast" for March 15, 2014. On this "Ides of March" edition of the show, we're joined by filmmaker Joshua Zeman ("Cropsey") to discuss his soon-to-be-released documentary "Killer Legends," in which he and researcher/producer Rachel Mills delve deeper into the truth behind some urban legends such as the Candy Man, the Babysitter and the Man Upstairs, the Hook Man and Killer Clowns.
On Sunday, 3/16 at 8pE, CHILLER debuts its new 2-hour special, KILLER LEGENDS. The horror documentary follows filmmakers Josh Zeman and Rachel Mills as they investigate the true crimes behind these urban legends while exploring how the myths evolved and why we continue to believe. The documentary probes the following legends of:The Candyman: Though the legend is prolific, in actuality there is only one documented case of a child dying from tainted candy: 8-year-old Timothy O'Bryan, who was poisoned on Halloween by a real-life miscreant who used the legend to hide his crime, earning him the fateful nickname. The Baby-Sitter and the Man Upstairs: While the babysitter has become the go-to victim in so many horror films, does the same hold true in real life? Tragically, yes, as the filmmakers discover in unsolved case of Janett Christman, a babysitter slain in Columbia, MO, in 1950.The Hookman: Based upon the legend of two teens lovers terrorized by a madman with a hook for a hand, filmmakers investigate the case of a killer known as The Phantom, who in 1946 attacked five couples parked on lovers' lanes in Texarkana. The Killer Clown: The filmmakers investigate “phantom clown” scares that have spontaneously occurred since the 1980s. As the duo explores Chicago's creepy clown past, from John Wayne Gacy to Bozo, they attempt to answer the question of how clowns became so evil, and why they continue to haunt our nightmares.Joshua Zeman has been creating independent films for over 10 years. His critically-acclaimed horror documentary CROPSEY, was critic's pick with The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times and Roger Ebert, and was “one of the scariest films of the year” in 2010.
