For nearly 40 years, the DoveLewis Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Hospital in Portland has operated a blood bank for cats and dogs in need of blood transfusions for life-threatening injuries and illnesses. According to blood bank coordinator Kelsey Reinauer, it’s the largest such facility in Oregon and possibly now the entire West Coast. Last year, DoveLewis performed nearly 500 transfusions in-house and shipped more than 200 units of blood products to hospitals as far away as Tennessee and Florida.  As with human blood donations, the need is often greater than the supply, and recruiting new donors can be challenging. The New York Times recently reported on DoveLewis’ efforts to grow a community of “superhero” donors. Their owners bring their cats and dogs to the hospital for regular blood donations which are incentivized with perks such as free treats and toys and personalized trading cards featuring their pets’ photos and interests. Reinauer joins us to talk about the blood donation program, along with Debi Hays, a volunteer at DoveLewis whose dog, Kasha, donates blood four times a year. Her other dog, Kiev, retired from the program earlier this year.

Building relationships with patients can be one of the most rewarding parts of owning a healthcare practice. (Or, for veterinarians, also building relationships with the patients' owners...) What happens when you decide you want to expand your practice into multiple locations? Will you still have the time to dedicate to connecting with patients? How will you foster the kind of culture you want in your new locations? Dr. Mike Robinson, VMD has learned the answers to these questions and more on his road to becoming the owner of multiple animal hospitals in North Carolina. He began working as an associate at Cabarrus animal hospital in North Carolina in 2011, and a few short years later, he found himself in a position to purchase the hospital. Then in 2019, he opened a startup clinic in Harrisburg and in 2022 bought a third clinic in the same area. He's currently in the process of completing a ground-up construction project which will be the future home of both Harrisburg hospitals. In this episode, we'll ask him: How to know when it's time to open a second location? What challenges can doctors expect when deciding to expand? How is managing multiple hospitals different from managing just one? How do you maintain a company culture across multiple locations? How to structure your workforce to thrive in different locations? Are you ready to take the next step in scaling up your hospital ownership dreams? Visit getprovide.com.

Today, I'm thrilled to bring you some amazing insights from a recent episode featuring Michael Shirley, the owner of Family Pet Health veterinary hospital. Let me tell you, Michael's veterinary practice knows how to make a grand opening unforgettable. They managed to attract a whopping 350-450 people to their grand opening event, despite the challenges of parking and logistics. But it wasn't just a celebration of their new location - it was a showcase of their unique approach to veterinary care. They took participants on a guided tour, where they got to learn about different aspects of the practice, from radiology to surgery and recovery. And get this, they even used a stuffed animal dog to simulate real-life scenarios, like a pregnant dog needing surgery. How cool is that? One of the biggest takeaways from Michael's experience is the power of special events in engaging clients. At the grand opening, they handed out passport books to participants, who had to collect stamps from different stations to enter a contest for free vaccines for life. This clever strategy not only created excitement, but also allowed Family Pet Health to collect valuable contact information for future marketing campaigns. And let me tell you, Michael knows a thing or two about marketing. He used social media to generate buzz leading up to the event, creating authentic videos with his cell phone to showcase the unique features of their new building. They even ran video ads on platforms like Instagram, YouTube, and Facebook, which received a high click-through rate thanks to their engaging content. But that's not all. Michael also shares his insights on controlling the message about his new vet hospital and addressing concerns about potential price increases. He emphasizes the importance of charging what they're worth and providing a higher-end experience. And let's not forget about community engagement - Family Pet Health has a large garage space that can be rented out for events, from dog training classes to wedding and baby showers. By offering this space at a low cost, they not only give back to the community, but also attract potential clients who may already have dogs and need a veterinarian. I hope you found these insights as valuable as I did. If you want to connect with Michael, you can find him on LinkedIn or Facebook, where he's always active. And don't forget to check out the Veterinary Leadership Book Club, a Facebook group with over 3000 veterinary professionals, where they read and discuss books related to veterinary practice. A big thank you to our sponsors, the International Veterinary Dentistry Institute, Veterinary Dentistry.net, Used Vet Equipment, and New Vet Equipment. Without their support, we wouldn't be able to bring you these amazing episodes. So, share this podcast with others who could benefit from the content, and let's keep learning and growing together in the veterinary industry.

VMP 255.5: 6 Ways To Generate Clients At Your Veterinary Practice

The Veterinary Marketing Podcast

I recently had an awesome discussion about generating clients for veterinary hospitals using digital marketing. I wanted to share the insights from that episode with you, breaking down the six strategies I discussed and giving you my take on their effectiveness. First up, we talked about paid advertising. It's a powerful tool for reaching a wide audience, but it's important to remember that it should come after establishing other methods. Paid advertising can be effective, but it's not the first step in building a solid client base. Next, we touched on cold outreach. While it can be effective, it's not scalable and can be time-consuming. So, I don't typically recommend it as a primary method for generating clients. Now, let's talk about my personal favorite - client referrals. When your clients refer others to your veterinary hospital, it's a clear indication of good service. Plus, it attracts similar clients, helping you build a strong, loyal client base. Another great strategy is forming strategic partnerships with businesses that have the same client type. By partnering with boarding facilities or groomers, for example, you can tap into their client base and offer your services, creating a win-win situation. We also discussed the power of organic media, which involves creating and publishing content on external sites like blogs, social media, videos, and podcasts. This helps you reach a wider audience and establishes you as an authority in your field. Lastly, we talked about owned media, which includes email or text message lists. This is a powerful tool for directly communicating with your clients and keeping them updated about your services. To wrap it up, I emphasized the importance of diversifying your traffic sources to protect against market conditions. Referrals, building your own media list, strategic partnerships, and content creation should be prioritized. Paid advertising and cold outreach can be effective, but they shouldn't be your primary methods. Remember, building strong relationships with your clients and providing excellent service are key. If you have any questions or need assistance, feel free to reach out. I'm here to help you succeed in your veterinary marketing efforts. ‍

I'm excited to dive into a topic that's essential for veterinary hospitals - long-form content. As a hospital, you want to attract high-quality clients who trust your expertise and values. But how can you do that through your content? In this episode of the Veterinary Marketing Podcast, we'll explore the importance of creating both short-form and long-form content, with a focus on the latter. Long-form content, such as podcasts and videos, allows you to provide more value to your clients and dive deeper into specific topics. Clients who engage with long-form content are more likely to believe in your recommendations and have a shorter buying decision process. They may also be more informed about your hospital's values and approach to veterinary care. But why does long-form content have such a powerful impact? It comes down to trust and credibility. When you take the time to create in-depth content, you demonstrate your expertise and dedication to your field. Clients are more likely to trust you and see you as a valuable resource, which can lead to long-term loyalty. Of course, short-form content like reels and stories also have their place in your content strategy. They can capture attention and provide a quick glimpse into your hospital's personality and services. However, don't neglect the potential benefits of long-form content. So, how can you get started with long-form content? Don't be intimidated! Consider topics that your clients may be interested in, and think about how you can provide in-depth value. Don't forget to showcase your personality and approach to veterinary care. At the end of the day, creating both short-form and long-form content can help you attract and retain high-quality clients for your veterinary hospital. Give it a try and see the impact it can make. And if you need any help or have questions, don't hesitate to reach out to us for content marketing assistance. As always, thanks for tuning in to the Veterinary Marketing Podcast!

Who loves neurology?! That little blob of skull-jelly and all the wires that come off it can be very confusing and very intimidating, even more so when we start talking about the encephalitis/meningitis complex of diseases that we encounter in our veterinary patients. To help us make sense of the different immune-mediated neurological diseases we're joined by specialist veterinary neurologist Dr Sam Long. Dr Sam gives us a clear plan for getting to a diagnosis, including how to make sense of serology testing and how to use some new diagnostic tools available to us. He also shares his tips on a practical treatment plan, even if you don't manage to confirm a diagnosis. Dr Long underwent his residency and specialist training in Glasgow in the UK. Following his specialist training he undertook a PhD in canine brain cancer before moving to the United States to take up a position as head of the Section of Neurology at the University of Pennsylvania's Veterinary Hospital. In 2008 Dr Long returned to Melbourne to establish the University of Melbourne Veterinary Hospital's first-ever Neurology clinical service and specialist training programme. In 2017 he established Melbourne's first private referral neurology service and in 2020 moved his service to the Veterinary Referral Hospital in Dandenong. His research interests are in the field of brain tumours, canine epilepsy, canine spinal cord trauma and canine degenerative myelopathy. He supervises resident and registrar training and has authored more than 30 papers and multiple book chapters on veterinary neurology. This episode is supported by the SVS Pathology Network. In Today's episode we have a special guest, it's Rhonda Belle from DogDaysConsulting.com and she's sharing her insights on branding and building your veterinary hospitals presence online. I found the interview to be incredibly insightful and gives us some super practical tips for creating a brand that's going to attract the right kind of clients to your Veterinary Hospital.    We cover everything from how to develop a brand for your Veterinary practice, to how to handle and approach your team members to creating their own brands in practice, and much more!    I really liked having Rhonda on because she is a CVPM and has a ton of in-practice experience. This lends itself to giving tips and tools that are actually going to be used, especially when it comes to creating content, which usually gets put on the back burner.    So often, you'll hear the word authenticity turn around when it comes to creating content and building a brand oh, but what does that actually mean? I really liked Rhonda's examples of how to figure out what you want to be about and then how to communicate that.  Ronda also has some really great insight into creating additional streams of income,  which I think is incredibly powerful, especially because there's a huge need when it comes to Brands reaching consumers All Brands reaching other Veterinary professionalsIf you want to see how Rhonda and her team can help your veterinary practice, be sure to head on over to DogDaysConsulting.com  I know you'll be able to take a ton of value away from today's episode, so be sure to listen all the way through and if you need help with anything don't hesitate to reach out.

In today's episode I cover the essential Elements you need to consider when you're creating content for Veterinary Hospital. A lot of the content that I create in the past year has been dramatically different from previous years, because I've been intentionally trying to improve the content, reach and engagement of the things that I do create. In this episode, I'll detail the most important elements that you need to consider before during and after content creation.  When it comes to content I believe that now more than ever you need to focus on your Niche Target audiences. I like to call these audiences buckets or content buckets. Within each bucket, you'll have subgroups, and you want to test and try targeting the subgroups for example in your general buckets you'll have things like dog owners, or cat owners and then in the sub buckets, you'll have content related to kittens more large breed dogs or senior pets. The more specific that you get within your Niche typically the more useful it will be to that Niche audience.  One of the most important elements that I used to pass over was attracting more attention, and getting as many views and clicks on the content as possible. Now I'll spend a lot more time thinking about the idea of the hook and how to engage and then go through the creation process. Do you want to be more successful with your content start out with your content buckets that you'll be focusing on, clearly identify the sub Niche audiences that you'll Target, think about how to hook these people and engage them in your content and then have relevant offers. You should also be targeting a lot of your content towards conversion so that you can see actual return on investment from your content. Once you're done creating content make sure that you're naming it in a way that you can easily access it and use it.  The naming convention process is really helpful both in the creation, especially if you have a team that is also working on your content, as well as repurposing and reusing content you've created in the past.

Most better hospitals don't have client generation systems in place. The proof is when things slow down all of a sudden they ask, quotes what should I do to get more appointments?    I can't tell you how many conversations I've had lately that have turn off by saying we're down by 20%, or we have a lot of appointments open this week, what should we do? So today's episode is to give you a clear path on what you need to do so that you can generate new clients without worry.    We talk about first identifying who you want to be targeting, then we talked about creating your offer and finally applying traffic so that you can generate more new clients for your Veterinary Hospital.    When you think about marketing your Veterinary practice, there's really only two very basic ways to approach your strategy kolin you can either Target People based on their behavior or Target People based on their demographics. All marketing essentially boils down to that.    this is why it's so important that we first figure out who we want to be targeting so that we can decide if we need to create an offer that's going to appeal to somebody who's taking an action or somebody do we have to interrupt based on their demographic or psychographic data    if you can really nail down who your ideal Prospect is along with an offer that's going to be irresistible to them the last step is simply applying traffic, and it isn't that difficult to generate your perfect clients.    Special thank you again to usedvetequipment.com newvetequipment.com for sponsoring today's episode.

Episode 240: Using Google Analytic To Better Your Digital Marketing

The Veterinary Marketing Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 11, 2022 16:05

In this episode, we covered the easiest way in my opinion to get better at marketing for your Veterinary Hospital: using Google analytics. Google Analytics is a great product that's been around for now almost two decades, but very few veterinary hospitals that I know actually use it. The truth is most Veterinary practices, and small businesses for that matter have analytics installed on their site but the crazy reality is that about 70% of people never actually look at what's going on.    The easiest way to get better at marketing is to understand: 1) how you're getting traffic2) how the traffic is engaging with your site end  3) how to make improvements so that you increase your conversion, and retention which will turn into better results    Most people can't remember what they ate for lunch 2 days ago. Yet, they expect that they're going to be able to remember what works and what doesn't when it comes to marketing, messaging, call to action, or anything else related to digital marketing.      we need to fix that approach, make sure that you're tracking where traffic is coming from, and how it's engaging, so that you can set benchmarks and understand if there's problems or slowdowns  you can correctly assess and identify the problems. Let's say your appointments dropped suddenly by 20%, how would you understand what is causing this problem? If you don't have accurate data or benchmarks, you'll have to guess and hope you're right.    Imagine if you had to run your veterinary hospital but you weren't allowed to examine the pet, run any tests, or do any Diagnostics you just had to instinctively know what the problem was and provide a solution. That's the approach most people take when it comes to marketing. next episode a break down some of the basic data that you can assess based on Google Analytics, I talked about the easiest ways to track your traffic and how to use Google analytics with other products like tag manager and Adwords Be sure to check out the many The Veterinary Marketing Podcast Courses like the Youtube Ads Couse and The Veterinary Marketing Ad Workshop we have available Here Join the Veterinary Marketing Nerd Facebook group to get even more help with your veterinary practices digital marketing  Be sure to listen and let me know if you have any questions, comments, or need help with anything!

There are very few people in this world I would change lives with! I have had many blessings in my life but finding a career that not only provides me the ability to support my family but also gives me a purpose each and every day has been one of the best. The old saying is “Find a job you enjoy and you will never work a day in your life”. This is so true! Providing animal care has always been a part of my life, since growing up on my parent's farm in Perth, NY. A graduate of Broadalbin-Perth, my college years were spent first at St. Lawrence University where I majored in Neuroscience and studied abroad in Denmark. I was then fortunate to be accepted to and attend veterinary school at the University of Tennessee. Throughout school, the complexities and capabilities of medicine left me in awe. I knew I wanted to spend my days helping people, and combined with my fondness for animals, veterinary medicine became a no brainer. Every day is different, and I love it! I especially enjoy the days I spend in surgery putting Humpty Dumpty back together again. I have challenged myself to learn advanced techniques allowing me to treat a variety of issues. I have completed multiple advanced training courses and received a variety of professional certifications. This training allows me to evaluate a patient from start to finish. I am able to perform the diagnostic test necessary such as diagnostic ultrasounds, repair multiple orthopedic issues including fractures, cruciate repairs and patella luxation, general surgical procedures such as removal of kidneys, spleens and gall bladders, as well as advanced certifications in regenerative medicine techniques such as Stem Cell and Platelet Rich Plasma therapies. There is no better moment than when a family is reunited for the first time after seeing a loved one battle through an illness. Our patients are resilient and very often inspiring. When not “working” on animals, I spend my days with my beautiful wife and 2 amazing children. We have built our forever home here in Burnt Hills, the same town in which my mother-in-law grew up. My children will be able to learn in the same classrooms she did. Family and community have always been important to me. This is one of the main reasons my wife and I agreed to take over the leadership of the hospital. We are very proud to lead the community's best veterinary hospital, while continuing its rich history of being a family run business. Unfortunately, in today's veterinary community, being a family run business, centered on family values, is a rare commodity.
