Everywhere in the world women are living their lives unrecorded. What's up with that? What's the use of unrecorded lives? What are we afraid will happen if we put pen to paper to set down one memory moment of our lived experience? If we had the courage to venture into the depth of inquiry that guides a nice essay to a memorable story, what unexpected magic, freedom, or self-understanding might happen next? The depth of inquiry into our personal narratives moves even the best essays away from a nice recounting of facts and events and what happened to what did it all mean? There's more to your story than facts and events. Our stories become memorable when we deeply explore our lived experience, become curious about our motivations, what was at stake, the choices we made, the risks we took, and then reflect on how those experiences earned us a hard-won lesson. To get started recording a lived memory moment experience you recall—maybe the first job you ever had or the first time you stood up for yourself—set down the time, place and setting of the facts and events as you remember them. Next, capture highlights of the character (that would be you), who she was, how she was living her life, and why we might care about her. What was the event that upended her daily routine and set her up to want something different for herself? What was the problem that got in the way of what she wanted and how did she overcome it? Now we're embarking on the depth of inquiry. We focus our attention on the character's underlying emotions, feelings, fears, doubts, struggles, and values. These personal truths help us understand the meaning of what has happened when her routine was upended, what was at stake for her, and why she chooses to do what she does to get what she so keenly desires, come what may. When we dig deep into our lived experiences by asking difficult questions, refusing to accept our initial reactions, and allowing the story to lead us, we transform surface answers into self-awareness, self-understanding, and self-affirmation. Jacinda Ardern is a history-maker.As Prime Minister of New Zealand at 37, she became only the second woman in the world to give birth while in office. But it was her leadership style that defined her time at the top, leading with empathy and kindness in the face of back-to-back tragedies, and showing the strength of coming together.From growing up in small-town New Zealand singing country and western duets with her sister at the local community hall, to raging to Smashing Pumpkins in her first car with a discman plugged into the cassette deck, Ardern's musical taste has always been eclectic and deeply personal. She's the teenager who loved alternative music and heavy metal while being a dedicated student rep raised in the Mormon faith, and the world leader who chose a drum and bass track as her walk-on song.Her career path was never straightforward. She ran from the possibility of becoming a politician, buying a one-way ticket to New York to escape the suggestion she should run for office. But a sense of responsibility (what she calls her "oversized sense of duty"), kept pulling her back. In 2017, everything changed in a single year: a by-election, deputy leadership, then the top job itself, all while secretly pregnant. Kath Mertens (Kath Ulman) reflects on her life stage, mentioning her 20-year-old son heading to college, her divorce, and her part-time work. She describes feeling on the cusp of a new life phase, similar to when she graduated from Harvard. Becoming a Veterinarian Kath shares her initial career aspirations of becoming a veterinarian and the challenges she faced due to the lack of a pre-vet focus at Harvard. Kath recounts her first post-Harvard job in Jackson, Wyoming, where she worked as a ski bum and later as a wrangler on a dude ranch. She rediscovered her passion for veterinary medicine while working on a dude ranch and decided to apply to veterinary school. Kath attended Purdue University for veterinary school, focusing on equine medicine. She discusses the cultural and philosophical split between large animal and small animal veterinary medicine. Interning at an Equine-only Practice Kath describes her first job in an equine-only practice in Portland, Oregon, where she had interned as a veterinary student. She faced challenges with her boss, who was not interested in mentoring her, leading to a difficult first year. Kath left the job and worked as a small animal vet for a year and a half, where she enjoyed surgery and surprised herself by enjoying the work. She faced further challenges with her second job due to her outspoken nature and eventually left under less than ideal terms. Running a Practice and Economic Decisions  Kath decided to open her own practice, despite her initial disinterest in business, due to the lack of equine job opportunities. She ran her own practice for about 22 years, which was profitable but not financially rewarding. Kath scaled back her practice four years ago to work part-time as a small animal vet for Banfield Pet Hospital. She explains the economic reasons behind her decision, including the higher efficiency and pay in small animal medicine. Training Non-domestic Animals Kath developed an interest in animal behavior and positive reinforcement training, which led her to attend the International Donkey Wellness Symposium. She learned about training non-domestic animals to participate in medical procedures through positive reinforcement. Kath has been dedicating time to retraining a horse using these methods and teaching others. She discusses the economic differences between equine and small animal medicine, highlighting the higher volume and efficiency in small animal practice. Women in the Veterinarian Field The conversation turns to the high percentage of women in veterinary school and asks Kath about the trend. Kath speculates that women might be more willing to work for less pay and that veterinary medicine might be more accommodating for women balancing work and family. She acknowledges the gender gap in pay equity and the challenges women face in various careers. Didn't really apply around much and almost immediately accepted the full time offer from the company I did my internship with during my degree. And fast forward to middle of 2026… I am still here. I've long stopped growing as an engineer and have actually been stuck on a simple CLI tool for almost 4 years now with little to no cloud/backend/etcetera experience to show in my 5 year career. I don't feel I am desirable in the job market at all due to this and waited way too long to look for a job because I was comfortable and happy. I feel paralyzed (no need to put on your space therapist hats BUT some career advice would be wonderful!) (Also did I mention I am in Canada and want to move to Europe and live the rest of my life there but visa sponsorship with my level of experience is impossible? Maybe that'll be for my next question…) Thanks for all you do, cheers! I have a non-CS engineering degree, and am looking to transition into Software Engineering. I have the option of pursuing a degree with Tuition Reimbursement from my job, but am in a bit of a strange situation deciding which degree. Basically, I've figured that with my current Engineering background I could pursue either a second Bachelor's degree through Universities offering a “Post-Baccalaureate” program in Computer Science, or a Master's degree, with maybe only a slightly longer program to get the Master's as opposed to the Bachelor's. Otherwise the total length/cost of the programs would be roughly the same. I have heard though that it might not be a great idea to go into a Master's program unless you know what specifically you want to study. I am curious what you think would be more “hire-able” between the two options for someone pursuing the career change into Software Engineering?

In this powerful and deeply personal episode of Domestic Dad: Cleaning Up The Mess, host Nick Barnett sits down with Keith Jeffries to unpack a story marked by addiction, heartbreak, spiritual awakening, and the life-changing power of surrendering to God.   Keith shares openly about growing up in a loving home that lacked a spiritual foundation, and how his desire for acceptance and belonging led him down a destructive path at an early age. What began with drinking as a teenager quickly escalated into marijuana, prescription pills, heroin, and eventually years of meth addiction. Through his brutally honest reflection, Keith reveals how addiction slowly eroded his relationships, fueled selfish choices, and left him feeling empty despite outward success.   Nick and Keith explore the deep wounds that often live beneath addiction—including father wounds, unresolved anger, and the quiet shame that lingers long after the chaos of substance abuse fades. Keith reflects on the painful realization that the scars addicts leave on others can be some of the hardest burdens to carry in sobriety.   The turning point in Keith's story came during one of the darkest moments of his life. After years of addiction and the loss of his father, Keith found himself sitting alone with a gun in his hand, ready to end everything. Instead, in a moment he still struggles to fully explain, he fired the gun into the floor—an act that became a permanent reminder of the life he almost lost.   Soon after, Keith attended a men's event called The Launching Pad in Dallas, Texas, where he experienced a powerful encounter with God that would change everything. In that moment of surrender, the addictions that once controlled him were broken, and Keith began a new journey of faith, obedience, and purpose.   But the journey wasn't without heartbreak. After five years of infertility, Keith and his wife Kayla experienced the joy of discovering they were pregnant with twins—only to lose both babies to miscarriage weeks later. In one of the most painful seasons of their lives, they made the difficult decision to remain faithful and obedient to God, trusting that He still had a plan for their family.   Today, Keith lives a completely transformed life—devoted to his faith, his marriage, and helping other men find freedom from addiction and hopelessness. His story is a powerful reminder that no matter how far someone believes they have fallen, redemption is always possible.   Through honest conversation, Nick and Keith discuss the role of obedience, the importance of brotherhood and accountability, and the incredible ways God reveals Himself when people choose faith over fear.   This episode is a raw and inspiring testimony that no one is too far gone for grace—and that sometimes the greatest miracles come after the darkest moments.
