Each year, Matt and two friends meet-up for Coaster Nerd Con (CNC), their own little convention for nerdy coaster riding. This year, the trio headed west to California.  The parks and attractions they visited were: Pacific Park on the Santa Monica Pier, Knott's Berry Farm, Warner Bros. Studio Tour, Universal Studios Hollywood, Six Flags Magic Mountain, California's Great America, Six Flags Discovery Kingdom and Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk.   In this episode, Matt reveals which park had the best guest service, as well as his favorite coaster of the trip.  He also shares 5 major lessons that he took away from this experience. They are: It all starts with your attitude and a quote from Henry Ford, "whether you think you can or you think you can't, you're right." The waiting experience at your attraction could be having a bigger impact in the overall guest experience than you think. It's not enough for us to be employers, we must also be educators. Parks who started off as twins had very different journeys. It's probably time to re-think incentive programs and replace them with "inspiration programs."   Have a question for the mailbag or know of a guest we should feature?  Drop us a line! Josh - josh@amusementadvantage.com Matt - matt@performanceoptimist.com Twitter Facebook LinkedIn This episode is brought to you by FunRating.  If you work in any area of the attractions industry, you’re probably curious how guests at your attraction perceive critical areas of guest experience.  Which facility type provided the best service in 2018?  Who really needs to improve their food service?  And which attraction saw the highest increase in likelihood to return?  These questions, and more, can all be found in the FunRating Report, and this is information that only Amusement Advantage can provide.  The FunRating Report can be found at funrating.com, and we have an exclusive offering for AttractionPros listeners.  To save 10% off of the one-time purchase of $375, tune into the podcast!

Walt Disney World is experimenting with charging people for the privilege of entering the park early or be able to stay past normal closing times.  Will the regional parks follow suit?  What would a program like that look like at, say, Cedar Point?   This week's ParkHopper is all about Legoland Florida. Would an average theme park fan enjoy this park? Or is it only for the kids?   Universal Studios Hollywood opened its version of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. What are the early reviews like? And will we have an appearance by our favorite friendly Half-Giant?   Plus, we talk with Roger Ross from California's Great America about recent rumors surrounding the park. Is it in danger of closing? We get to the bottom of it!   All this and much, much more!

We were watching "Jurassic Park" on TV the other night and laughing at the part of the movie where paleontologist Dr. Grant has just seen the dinosaurs. He says, "I think we're out of a job." And Ian Malcolm (played by the totally awesome Jeff Goldblum) says, "Don't you mean extinct?" So many of the things we do here at CoasterRadio.com are inspired by pop culture and this week's show is no different. This week, we ask the audience to pick one type of ride that they would like to see leave the face of the earth.  We're not looking for specific rides... only ride types.  Some of the answers (especially from E.B.) are shocking! We also have a Live Trip Report from Magic Joe!  Joe is normally part of the Window to the Magic Podcast, but this week, he brought his binaural audio gear to California's Great America to record an audio treat for our ears on their new coaster "Gold Striker." You'll feel like you're on the ride with him! The show then goes live to Orlando, Florida to talk with Mike's wife Molly.  She's down in the theme park capital of the world visiting Mike and Colleen (who have been featured on the show several times.) They'll talk about the latest testing going on with MyMagic+ and some of the strange rumors floating around the Walt Disney World resort! And, don't forget to take our LISTENER SURVEY! We're working on Season Eight of CoasterRadio.com and want to hear from you guys about how the show is doing! Check out all of the show notes and links in our new interactive ZEEN - "In Styleee!" E.B. returns to the show this week after a two week hiatus with tales of his EPIC Roadtrip! After travelling over 7,000 miles with his wife and three kids (all under eight years old), E.B. is back with tales of theme parks, national parks, volcanos and cowardly westerners. The guys also discuss the latest effort to revive Kentucky Kingdom in Louisville, KY.  Ed Hart and his team of investors plan to reopen the former Six Flags property in 2014! Mike and E.B. also take a look at the rumored new water attraction being dreamed up by the guys at Schlitterbahn.  The new ride will supposedly feature a 180-foot drop, an airtime bunny hill and a top speed of 87-MPH! We also have several Live Trip Reports from "Goldstriker" at California's Great America and the strange reason why the ride had to be shut down for a few days last week. Plus, we have the return of our 4th of July tradition - The SPARKTACULAR EXPLOOSIOLOOSA! It's all coming up on a brand new episode of The Original Theme Park Podcast! There's big news this week out of Northern California this week and we have the first interviews about it. California's Great America announced that their new roller coaster "Gold Striker" will now include the world’s longest covered initial descent tunnel on a wooden coaster.    Adding intrigue to the record setting feature, Gold Striker’s 174-foot tunnel will be enclosed by wood on both sides, corrugated metal on top and in-fill underneath the tracks, to replicate a true "gold mine" feel. We'll talk with Tyler Currie, Director of Park Operations for California's Great America about the new ride and their big announcement. We'll also discuss some rumors coming out of Walt Disney World in Orlando.  Word is leaking out about a possible re-imagining of the entire Downtown Disney complex.... complete with a new name, layout and a five-level parking garage.  Interesting stuff... but maybe Mike and EB have a better idea of what can be done with the area. All this, plus a Live Trip Report from Kings Island, the return of "OFF TOPIC" and a visit from everyone's favorite Dutch Performance Artist! Check out all of the show notes and links in our new interactive ZEEN - "In Styleee!" It's brand new for Season Seven!
