Circle of Parks Podcast: Talking all things Walt Disney World
The landscape of Walt Disney World is shifting dramatically, with major transformations coming to every park. From Dinoland USA becoming a vibrant Central Americas-themed land featuring Encanto and Indiana Jones, to Tom Sawyer Island making way for a Cars attraction, these changes represent Disney's evolving approach to park experiences. We dive deep into what these transformations mean for the Disney experience, exploring the tension between nostalgic attractions and Disney's push toward more recognizable intellectual properties. The upcoming Villains Land behind Big Thunder Mountain promises thrilling new experiences without replacing existing attractions, while Hollywood Studios will soon feature a Monsters Inc land with an innovative suspended coaster based on the door conveyor system from the beloved film. These changes raise important questions: Is Disney losing some of its original magic by replacing unique Imagineering creations with movie tie-ins? Or is this evolution necessary to compete with Universal's Epic Universe and appeal to younger generations? We consider whether the Disney experience has improved or declined since 2019, discussing the loss of beloved perks like Magical Express and free FastPass while acknowledging the exciting new attractions on the horizon. We also share our upcoming plans to test the new Multi-Pass system during our next trip, estimating we'll spend around $500 extra for our family of four to access all premium ride options. Will the convenience justify the cost? Is the Free Dining package actually saving money when factoring in required add-ons like Park Hopper tickets? These practical considerations reflect the changing economics of a Disney vacation in today's landscape.Whether you're a Disney purist concerned about these changes or excited to experience the new attractions, this episode provides thoughtful perspective on what Walt Disney World's transformation means for different types of visitors. Disney's recent financial successes, driven by strategic decisions and successful film releases, are overshadowed by leadership challenges and concerns about the company's future direction under Bob Iger. 00:00 Disney's Q4 2024 earnings showed a 6% revenue increase to $22.6 billion, driven by successful film releases, despite skepticism over Bob Iger's comments on streaming. 02:23 Disney Parks hit record Q4 revenue, but rising prices and competition from Universal's Epic Universe could hurt attendance and vacation choices. 04:33 Bob Iger is praised for Disney's turnaround, especially in movie performance, despite ongoing challenges at Pixar regarding working conditions and management priorities. 07:07 Iger faces criticism for turning Disney into an IP farm, with recent successes credited to the creative team rather than his leadership. 09:01 Bob Iger's return to Disney has been marked by controversial decisions and mismanagement, particularly regarding the transformation of Moana 2 and ongoing corporate battles influenced by Nelson Peltz. 13:22 Bob Iger's controversial decisions, including pricing changes and a failed legal battle, have led to significant challenges for Disney Parks this quarter, despite some praise for his overall leadership. 16:07 Iger's leadership has transformed Disney parks with a focus on IP integration and higher costs, but the recent performance boost is seen as customer gouging, indicating a need for new CEO to tackle persistent challenges. 17:53 Concerns about Disney's future arise from leadership changes, a potential focus on video games, and the need for a creative co-CEO alongside Bob Iger, whose stock sale suggests waning confidence in the company's direction. Disney's pricing strategy and treatment of disabled guests have been criticized, with the Lightning Lane system being used to upcharge disabled visitors instead of offering the DAS pass. Bob Iger's return led to the elimination of the free park pass and introduction of expensive upcharge options like the $500 per person per day "Park Hopper" package. Iger took credit for Disney's creative successes, but was responsible for staff cuts and gutting Pixar, while many creative decisions were made under Bob Chapek's leadership. Iger's personal interests in AI and Canva led to the creation of a new division, despite concerns about his lack of creativity and vision for the company's future. ESPN+ will be consolidated under Disney+ in the future, similar to how Hulu was merged into Disney+. Iger's return to Disney in 2022 was seen as a victory lap, with media praise despite taking credit for Chapek's decisions. Bob Iger overspent on Fox, putting Disney in a perilous position, and made unpopular decisions like removing Rivers of America at Disneyland. Iger's marching orders led to significant price increases and the elimination of free park passes, despite being gone for only two years. Iger prioritized his own ego, worrying about losing the best tables and kissing up to executives rather than focusing on Disney's success. Iger's lack of creative vision and tendency to micromanage led to Disney's current state, despite his ability to negotiate deals. Disney's Q4 2024 earnings showed a 30-39% increase in revenue to $22.6B, with net income doubling to $460M, marking one of their biggest quarterly upswings.

Our recent family vacation to Walt Disney World with my best friend's family was absolutely fantastic! We spent our time exploring three parks throughout our trip using the convenient Park Hopper ticket, which allowed us to move freely between parks at our leisure. We also indulged in a VIP tour, which was an incredible experience and gave us an exclusive look behind the scenes of the park.In addition to visiting the parks, we also spent two fun-filled days at the water parks and played mini-golf, which was a delightful experience. However, the most memorable part of our trip was undoubtedly the makeovers we arranged for our girls at Bounding Beauty and the boys at Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boutique . The makeovers were a unique and magical experience that we will cherish forever. As we reflect on our trip, we realize there were some activities that we would repeat and others that we would do differently on our next visit. One activity we recommend is watching the new fireworks show at Epcot called Luminous. It was mind-blowing and left us all in awe. Overall, this was an unforgettable trip that we will never forget. As Walt Disney World announces great new additions for 2024 (including a brand new Little Mermaid attraction) they are also implementing policies that put their most loyal customers at the back of the line. Walt Disney World's Uneven Treatment of Annual Passholders is a Problem for Some Good-to-Go Days are Great for Local Annual Passholders, but all others are out of luckA lot of changes are coming our way at Walt Disney World in 2024 and depending on where you fit in Walt Disney World's priority queue, these can be good or bad.Out of State Disney World Annual Passholders Moved to the Back of the LineGood-To-Go Days Calendar Coming January 11In 2024, Disney World will allow local annual passholders periods of spontaneity with so-called “good-to-go” days. While this idea is better than nothing for Orlando locals, it's still pretty shameful. Here's how it will work: On good-to-go days, Annual Passholders can enter the theme parks without a Park Pass reservation (specific pass blockout dates will still apply). Good-to-Go Days will be listed on Disney World's theme park reservation calendar, Annual Passholder admissions calendar and My Disney Experience app starting January 11, 2024. Days will be added randomly at any time throughout the year. Who Do Good-to-Go Days benefit? Good-to-Go Days at Walt Disney World are directly aimed at local Walt Disney World annual passholders. It's not quite the unfettered entry that it should be, but it's better than nothing.Imagine if Airlines Treated Frequent Flyers the way Disney Treats Annual Passholders?Who Gets Ignored by Disney World Good-to-Go Days? Good-to-Go Days do nothing for the large number of Walt Disney World Annual Passholders who aren't local: those who are out-of-state or international. These are the Annual Passholders more likely to spend thousands of dollars on every visit, with Disney hotel reservations, dining and so on. This is the group of loyal Disney travelers. This group is getting snubbed by Disney as they get nothing. Disney continues its unfortunate tradition of treating some of its highest value guests the worst.Since this group almost always uses Walt Disney World Annual Passes as part of a Disney Vacation, they should receive the same treatment as Date-Based Ticket holders, as long as the passholders are staying onsite at a Walt Disney World Resort Hotel or Villa. This needs to change before Disney alienates even more of the guests who contribute most to its parks and resorts revenue.Park Hopper is Getting Back to Normal On the plus side, Disney Annual Passholders and guests with Park Hopper tickets or passes will once again be able to park hop without waiting until a pre-set afternoon time starting January 9, 2024. Annual Passholders can also visit any park without requiring a Park Pass reservation after 2:00 p.m. (except for Magic Kingdom on a Saturday or Sunday). The Winners in the Theme Park Reservation DebacleAnyone who buys date-based standard tickets (typically one-time Walt Disney World visitors) won't need to go through the hassle of making theme park reservations. This is great for infrequent travelers, who continue to get the premier treatment by Walt Disney World. Guests including Disney Vacation Club members with Annual Passes get nothing except all the pains of Disney travel implemented with covid.Dining Plans ReturnIf you're a fan of the Disney Dining plan you'll once again have the option to buy one of two offerings: the Disney Quick Service Dining Plan or the Disney Dining Plan. These plans are great for convenience, but may or may not be good value depending on your eating habits. What's New with Dining PlansFor all the Disney foodies out there, dining reservations are open for booking for guests staying at Disney Resort hotels who purchase a vacation package with a Disney dining plan for arrivals in January through early February! Guests can book dining up to 60 days in advance, and as a Disney Resort hotel guest, guests may book dining for their entire length of stay (up to 10 days).--Princess Ariel is Finally Coming Back to Disney's Hollywood Studios with an All-New ShowAfter years of wondering if the Ariel's Animation Courtyard Theater would host a new Little Mermaid show, we now know that “The Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure” will debut in the fall of 2024. The show is inspired by the original Walt Disney Animation Studios 1989 classic version of The Little Mermaid. Only limited details have been released, but so far we know the show will be a complete overhaul, featuring all-new set pieces, current tech effects and a "bold new design" that captures Ariel's imagination and emotions through her unique view of the world around her. This will, of course, be a musical version featuring “Part of Your World,” “Poor Unfortunate Souls,” and “Kiss the Girl.” Theater construction is ongoing and we look forward to hear more about this refreshed attraction.Thank You for Listening to the Disney Travel PodcastThank you very much for listening to this episode, Amelia and I hope that you enjoyed it. Park Hopping is finally getting back to normal starting in January 2024, but the discrimination against annual passholders continues. Is this a good move by Disney or will a backlash lead to change as the Disney company continues to penalize its most loyal guest.Park Hopping, Park Passes and more in 2024 at Walt Disney WorldStarting on January 9, 2024, if you have Park Hopper on your Disney World park tickets or Annual Pass you will once again be able to park hop whenever you like without waiting until after 2:00 p.m. On days when theme park reservations are required for Annual Passholders and certain non-dated tickets, Passholders and guests will be able to take advantage of the updates to Park Hopper access after visiting their first park. For example, if a Passholder has a reservation at EPCOT and enters the park at 9 a.m. for a quick ride or two, they can then head to another park right after. What Disney is calling “Good-to-go days” will also begin in January (date TBA). These are days when Annual Passholders can visit a Disney World park without needing a theme park reservation (blockout dates will continue to apply like they do today). The negative is that Disney continues to discriminate against Annual Passholders who are spending money or DVC points to stay onsite at a Disney World hotel. They should be lifting Park Pass booking requirements for anyone who is staying onsite no matter what kind of ticket they have. This is certainly not making things simpler or easier for Disney's most loyal guests.--Disneyland's Downtown Disney is Getting New Food Offerings and MoreParkside Market is a new, curated collection of diverse culinary concepts with four new offerings under one roof. It's all part of the expansion on the west end of Downtown Disney. Seoul Sister is a fast-casual eatery serving Korean food based on bibimbap (Korean rice bowls) with a California twist. Executive Chef Kelly Kim will showcase bold Korean flavors through marinated meats, colorful vegetables and savory sauces over rice, noodles or salad, plus appetizers, an Asian-inspired breakfast menu, and hand-crafted drinks. Sip & Sonder, from founders Amanda-Jane Thomas and Shanita Nicholas, has been recognized as one of the best cafés in L.A. and soon you can enjoy their signature lattes, fresh treats, frozen drinks and Caribbean-inspired bites.GG's Chicken Shop was founded by James Beard Award winners Rob Katz and Kevin Boehm, alongside Michelin Star Chef Partner Lee Wolen who will serve a family-friendly menu of chicken sandwiches, salads, and classic sides. The Downtown Disney location will be their first on the West Coast.second story bar will be an al fresco spot featuring signature craft cocktails and mocktails using local ingredients and artful garnishes. Refreshing selections will include frozen lemonades, frozés, espresso martinis, shareable cocktails and spirit-free drinks. Also coming to Downtown Disney's west end is a new stage and lawn for special events, activities, musical entertainment and more. Future plans will also bring Din Tai Fung, a world-renowned Chinese restaurant known for its soup dumplings and noodles, plus Mexican cuisine by Michelin-starred Chef Carlos Gayta at Paseo and Centrico. California-Cuban cheese rolls and pastries to come from Porto's Bakery and Cafe. --Thank You for Listening to the Disney Travel PodcastThank you very much for listening to this episode, Amelia and I hope that you enjoyed it. How to Ride TRON Lightcycle Run Before it Opens to the Public on April 4 Disney travelers are anticipating the opening of TRON Lightcycle / Run, which is scheduled to officially open on Tuesday, April 4, 2023 at Disney's Magic Kingdom Park. But did you know that before the attraction officially opens there will likely be an opportunity for certain guests to get a ride? Cast members always get this perk (understandably) but Disney has basically said that Annual Passholders and eligible Disney Vacation Club Members will also be given an opportunity to throw their hats in the ring for this major perk.We don't know the details yet, but there will likely be a rush to get a spot once details are announced. The story of the ride is that it picks up after the “TRON: Legacy” story where Kevin's son, Sam Flynn, has opened a second gateway into a digital world called the Grid. The first portal to this world was built at Shanghai Disneyland with the original TRON Lightcycle Power Run. So it's fun how Disney has worked to continue the story and didn't just make this a copy of the Shanghai version. As the ride goes, you will be Team Blue against the Grid's menacing Programs, Team Orange. Your goal is to be the first to race through eight Energy Gates and secure victory. How this all pans out remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: Tron Lightcycle Run will be one of the fastest coasters at any Disney theme park in the world.---The Positive Changes at Walt Disney World Resort: If you're a Walt Disney World Annual Passholder you'll soon be able to visit the theme parks after 2:00 p.m. without needing a park pass reservation. The only exclusions are Saturdays and Sundays at Magic Kingdom Park and pass blackout dates. You can once again self-park at Walt Disney World hotels at no cost when you are a guest staying there. When you buy Disney Genie+ you'll also get free digital downloads of Disney PhotoPass attraction photos taken in the park on the day of your purchase. --- The Positive Changes at Disneyland Starting February 4, 2023, if you have a Disneyland theme park ticket with a Magic Key pass or a Park Hopper ticket you can start hopping two hours earlier – starting at 11:00 a.m. Disneyland will offer nearly two-months-worth of $104 park ticket dates throughout 2023, which means more opportunities to enjoy the lowest price one-day, one-park tickets. Disney PhotoPass digital photo downloads taken on any Disney PhotoPass attraction during a park visit will be complimentary for ticketed park guests on the Disneyland app starting February 4 and lasting for the Disney 100 celebration. Disneyland Resort will make select Magic Key passes available for new sales from time to time throughout 2023 as pass inventory becomes available. --Tiana's Palace Coming to Disneyland Park in 2023Just as Tiana transformed an old sugar mill into her dream restaurant in “The Princess and the Frog,” Disney is transforming the French Market Restaurant in New Orleans Square at Disneyland Park into a news restaurant called Tiana's Palace.Tiana's Palace will feature peach-colored walls and green wrought-iron balconies with elegant fixtures and appointments reminiscent of Tiana's film life. This should fit nicely into the current vibe of New Orleans Square. The new quick-service restaurant will offer guests an authentic New Orleans menu and expand on the current items served at the location. To make the change, the French Market Restaurant (and Mint Julep Bar) will be closed as of February 17, 2023, and will reopen as Tiana's Palace (alongside the Mint Julep Bar with its famous mint juleps and Mickey beignets) later in 2023.--- Moonlight Magic is Back 2023 Disney Vacation Club members, mark your calendars: Disney California Adventure - February 1, 2023EPCOT - February 8 and 15, 2023Disney's Hollywood Studios - May 11 and September 13, 2023Disney's Animal Kingdom Park - July 11 and August 2, 2023Disney's Typhoon Lagoon Water Park - May 23 and August 23, 2023 -- Pool Closures at Disney Aulani in Early 2023Aulani's two popular water slide pool areas are closing for refurbishment. The Volcanic Vertical body slide will be unavailable from January 16 – February 3, 2023. The Tubestone Curl tube slide will be unavailable from February 20 to March 10, 2023 and Aulani's other water features will be open during the closures, including Waikolohe Pool and Stream, Ka Maka Pool & Grotto, the multiple whirlpool spas, Keiki Cove splash zone, and Wailana Pool.Thank You for Listening to the Disney Travel PodcastThank you very much for listening to this episode, Amelia and I hope that you enjoyed it. On this week's show, Disneyland pros, David and Ronn dive into several sizzling Disney topics. Exploring the Science and Future of the Reservation System. Maximizing profits is the goal for every business. Disney happens to already be masterful at separating people from their money - add the repeated mentions of their "yield management" strategy and "demand-based pricing" from Bob Chapek and Disney brass - and it appears clear the pricing strategy for both admissions and even attractions may be changing. But to what end? Is the current reservation system performing at an optimal level resulting in Disney maximizing profits? Almost certainly not considering its infancy and recent times. If that is the case, changes are to be expected and it's very reasonable to even expect seemingly radical changes. Could reservations and/or the Magic Key Pass be terminated? Could we see Ticket allotments? Ala carte attraction fees? Variable pricing ala airline seats? Is the 1:00 pm Park Hopper rule here to stay? What celebrities have we run into at the Parks? Where would we love to see a permanent live stream camera at Disneyland?Plus, we remember, celebrate, and honor The Love Bug, The Many Adventure of Winnie the Pooh, Splash, The Old Mill, the Multiplane Camera, The Swiss Family Treehouse, and Man in Space in this week in Disney history. All this and the big reveal of our Favorite 5 Non-Opening Day rides at Disneyland, and more!
Bill and Danie have recently come into an insane amount of money (totally legit...) and have decided to create their own Frankenstein's Monster of a theme park. For a lack of a better name, we're calling it Park Hopper Land! Obviously, with the money that we TOTALLY HAVE, licensing fees are no issues. Spared no expense, if you will. We've gone through domestic and international Disney, Universal and SeaWorld parks, and chosen rides, attractions, experiences and more from each of them to create THE BEST THEME PARK EVER TO THEME PARK! From thrill rides, to screen based, water attractions, night time shows and parades, we came up with what WE thought we'd want most from our new park. Do you agree with our choices. My wife and I recently took our daughters on a Disney vacation. What does this have to do with military benefits? Well, we saved a ton of money on our tickets with the Disney Armed Forces Salute discounted Park Hopper passes, and we also stayed at the Shades of Green Resort at Walt Disney World, one of four Armed Forces Recreation Centers around the world. Shades of Green is actually a military resort, run by the Army. IN today's podcast, we cover how to take advantage of these discounts, what it's like to stay at Shades of Green, and how to maximize your Disney vacation. You can also read more on our website - http://themilitarywallet.com/shades-of-green/
