Sarah Worrell is the General Manager at Kentucky Kingdom. Sarah has been with Herschend Entertainment for more than 10 years, getting her start with the company in Denver running human resources for Elitch Gardens. Sarah has been in the attractions industry for all of her professional career, with experience at Paramount Parks, Six Flags, Hard Rock Park, and Herschend Family Entertainment. In this interview, Sarah talks about employee recruitment and retention, developing employees, and leading with love.    Recruitment and Retention   "The guest experience mixed in with the employee experience is where we have focused our efforts."   There's many elements within the employee experience that are often overseen and are thought of as normal or standard. However, behind the scenes, the structure of the employee experience is critical to the operation and sustainability of a park.    The employee requires support to get going, and that involves items like training and more complex items such as guidelines and regulations. When revising this system or building it from the ground up, it's important to maintain a good, stable employee experience to additionally support the guest experience.  Developing Employees   “You have to be okay knowing that you will develop a person to take their talents somewhere else, but shouldn't stop you from developing them in the moment.” Employees don't join a company they don't believe in. It's important to make sure that the employee leaves a stronger, better person than when they got onboarded. No company wants a stagnant employee, and no employee wants a stagnant company. It's important to keep streams of inspiration flowing to encourage growth and development on both sides.    Many people have been personally inspired by experiences while working in the attractions industry, and that's what keeps the consistent love and innovation pouring into the community. Somebody may have joined with the intention of staying for a summer, but instead stayed for a lifetime. By being that source of inspiration, you can take employees to the next level and have more passionate people in the industry.   Leading With Love   “We want them to understand what it means to be a patient, kind, truthful, trusting, humble, forgiving, dedicated leader.”   Being a leader means being a leader worth following. By showing compassion and empathy, employees will look up to you and realize that you do truly care about their work and meaning to the company. Taking initiative with your employees and making sure that you have an open stream of communication allows for ideas to be shared, employees to be developed, and guests to be satisfied.    Showing initiative and being prepared for your employees also shows your level of commitment to the people who keep your park operating. Keeping the professional appearance while also keeping them aware of your commitment to them is a recipe for success and shows the employees how much you truly care. Coaster Nerd Con is the yearly trek by Matt and two friends to ride as many roller coasters as they can in an 8 or 9 day period. This year, the trip included stops at Six Flags Great Adventure, Knoebels Amusement Resort, Hersheypark, Lakemont Park, Kennywood, Kings Island, Kentucky Kingdom, Holiday World, Indiana Beach Boardwalk Resort and Cedar Point. In this episode, Matt shares his observations and experiences and he and Josh turn them into valuable operational lessons.   First, Matt shares some of his favorite, most memorable moments of the trip - some that were directly influenced by the park and employees, others that were made possible by the atmosphere the park created. By discussing these individual moments, Matt and Josh drew connections between them and linked them to the intersection of guest and employee experience.   Next, Josh and Matt discuss the following observations and how they relate to a successful guest and employee experience. Make feedback easy - Six Flags had large posters with a QR code for guests to leave positive feedback for their team members. Sound/Audio matters - whether a ride spiel or a storytelling element in an attraction, if people can't hear or understand what's being said, a large portion of the story and experience is lost. Presentation matters - from Hersheypark's Ferris wheel appetizers to Kings Island's employees, the visual impression of your experience cannot be underestimated, both from the guest and employee perspective. Don't forget the human component of a tech-driven world - at Kennywood, even though the process for buying and using the skip-the-line pass was done completely from your phone, they still had people standing by to help answer questions and for “emotional support.” How do you say goodnight or goodbye to your guests (or employees)? Do you have a strategy to reinforce the great memories created so that they want to come back again and again?   This podcast wouldn't be possible without the incredible work of our amazing team: Scheduling and correspondence by Kristen Karaliunas Branding and design by Fabiana Fonseca   To connect with AttractionPros: attractionpros@gmail.com

Jessi O'Daniel is the General Manager of Typhoon Texas Austin, one of four parks owned and operated by the Pyek Group. Jessi's journey in the attractions industry began with Kentucky Kingdom, where over the course of eight years, Jessi took on several leadership and management roles, and until recently was the park's Vice President of Guest Experience. As the Pyek Group has grown and continues to expand, Jessi began her current role at Typhoon Texas in January 2022.  Additionally, Jessi is the chair of IAAPA's Young Professional Subcommittee and a member of the North America Regional Advisory Committee.  In this interview, Jessi discusses what it means to put your stamp on it, the importance of soft skills, and leadership development. Putting Your Stamp on it   “They're like, ‘put your stamp on it, make it yours, make Typhoon Texas awesome.'”   In the attractions industry, one of the most valuable initiatives is improving the guest experience. Whether this be through a simple act of moving a food item to a different kitchen or fighting for new assets for your maintenance team to help reduce downtimes, making personal executive decisions to improve the operation can make all the difference for guests, your team, and the overall experience of your park.    When you “put your stamp” on something, it means to make those difficult personal decisions with a fresh set of eyes and the best interest of the operation in mind. By putting yourself in the shoes of the guest, you can personally customize many things about the operation on any level, from hourly employees to general manager. Support will often follow decisions that benefit the guest experience and improve the operation, so it's important to not be afraid to change something when you look at it with a new pair of eyes.  Soft Skills   “There is a lot of benefit to building that team so that it is a unit and everyone is being mindful of everyone else.”   When it comes to building a team, it's important to make sure that everyone is harmonious in an aspect to where the operations of one team makes a positive impact on the operations of another. The grand operation should be built by bricks of teams that are all intertwined to ensure that they build each other up and don't damage each other.   The main way to achieve this is to ensure that those teams have soft skills, an ability to communicate and work harmoniously with other teams. For example, when it comes to operations, it's quite common that maintenance gets mad at operators, and operators get mad at maintenance. Building over these bridges and having people work together, even if it's as simple as learning names, can make all the difference in the world for operations, and therefore, the guest experience. Leadership Development   “There are so many different lanes and so much opportunity in this industry.”   Helping develop and nurture the next generation of industry professionals is no easy task, and navigating this industry as a young professional is already quite the maze. Some young professionals don't even know about what lies behind the doors of hourly positions, and helping develop leadership skills for future positions can really change the course of the industry.    People, especially young professionals, often want to break the curve. The excitement has been building, at least for Paul & Janine...... okay, maybe just Paul but it's finally time to share with the world our top 25 coasters as of 2021. Our little adventure has 320 credits in the last four years so these top 25 coasters are truly the best of the best.  While we don't want to spoil the episode, here is a list of the parks where these coasters reside : Dorney Park (we know, we are shocked also), Sea World Orlando, Dollywood, Kentucky Kingdom, Busch Gardens Williamsburg, Carowinds, Hersheypark, Kings Dominion, Busch Gardens Tampa, Cedar Point, Knoebels (we bet it's Flying Turns), Six Flags Over Georgia, Kings Island, Six Flags New England, and Six Flags Great Adventure. Now we know this list is going to be controversial but like the great Craig Ferguson says, "We Look Forward To Your Letters"   We love getting feedback so make sure you let us know what we got right and where we were WAY off.  How can you let us know? The wait is over, time for us to unveil our top 50 roller coaster for 2021.  This episode discusses our 50th to 26th coasters and to say there was some debate between Paul & Janine is the understatement of the day.  What started out with a lot of agreement shifting into head shakes and groans by the time our 35th coaster was discussed. Parks where these roller coaster reside include : Holiday World, Kings Island, Kennywood, Six Flags Great Adventure, Cedar Point, Busch Gardens Williamsburg, Carowinds, Luna Park (bet you can guess this one), Dollywood, Sea World Orlando, Hersheypark, Six Flags St. Louis, Six Flags Over Georgia, Silver Dollar City, Kentucky Kingdom, and Nickelodeon Universe at American Dream Mall (another one you should guess). We have been lucky to ride 320 coaster so far in our journey and these are truly the best of the best.  Simply The Best 2021 (part 2) will be dropping next Tuesday and we can't wait to hear your comments. Our second part of our Kentucky Kingdom adventure goes through a walk-through of this amazing little park focusing on the flats, food, and their fantastic water park, Hurricane Bay. Yes, looking at their map, this park can be a bit confusing (we got pretty lost the first time) but hopefully after this episode, you can find the kiddie section (King Louie's Playland), figure out how to get on Kentucky Flyer, and of course sit down with your favorite drink and unwind (we recommend the Hurricane Bay Beach Club Bar). Kentucky Kingdom is just a great place to enjoy and now that it is part of the Dollywood / Silver Dollar City family, we know the future is bright.  Highly on our list to visit again in 2022. Our journey continues as we leave Cedar Point behind and head to Kings Island, however, we get slightly sidetracked when we realize how close we are to Kentucky Kingdom (and our first RMC).  Join us on this episode as we discuss this little park with some BIG coasters.  Some of the questions we answer include : How the heck do we get into the park? Why are there so many airplanes overhead? What happened to T1?  Will we get a T4? Why is every roller coaster named after a weather event? Yes, Kentucky Kingdom has some unique aspects to it but we love this park and can't wait to dive into our two episode discussion about this little gem. If you've been following industry news lately, you may have seen that Herschend Family Entertainment has become a major partner and operator of Kentucky Kingdom in Louisville, KY. Jessi O'Daniel has worked at the park since 2014 and is currently the Vice President of Guest Experience. Josh chatted with Jessi about her guest experience philosophy, how Kentucky Kingdom merges social media with guest experience, and what goes into ensuring consistency in service delivery across all staff members, and all departments.Jessi gives excellent examples of positive service moments that she is thrilled to be a part of, showing that going above and beyond doesn't need to cost anything… for both guests and employees. When it comes to friction, one thing that is always on Jessi's mind is making sure that the park's policies and procedures resonate quickly with guests, knowing that they are walking into an unfamiliar environment, and it takes a little more than just putting up a sign. And at the end of the day, being a good human is one of the most important aspects of being a leader and a guest experience provider.
