Welcome back! First thing I'd like to say is, I was wrong Santa Monica Pier didn't burn down, Palisades and Malibu were burned. About the video, I was originally inspired by PJ Dreams' video years ago, and so, I've thought about making this video for awhile. It's funny how interesting it can be to dig up memories like this, it was actually a pretty active thinking process and I encourage you to try! By the way, in this video, I said I was born in California and later came to the west coast for the first time. We left California before I was one, so I have no memories of California as a child until I went again as an adult. Many blessings and the sweetest of dreams!! ❤️❤️❤️

Eric Clapton, Bob Weir & Van Morrison to name a few ;) As many of you know I LOVE live music and so this event was a MUST for this music mama!! Willkommen zur Shitshow! So jedenfalls nennt es einer der Interviewpartner für diese Folge am Santa Monica Pier, wenn er über die anstehenden US-Wahlen spricht. Von Jan Kawelke &Vassili Golod.
From the Hollywood Hills to the Santa Monica Pier, we're sharing the ultimate highlights from our first-ever Los Angeles adventure! SplatCon Cancelled?! Yup, we have the story!
We drove over to Santa Monica from Phoenix for a few reasons. One to have our wedding blessed by a Catholic Priest which created quite a bit of anxiety on my part with the usual response of "No" I'm not doing that. But, I always give in and in the end I'm grateful I did. We also had the celebration of life for my brother-in-law Barry which was truly fantastic and special. Also, I wanted to try my hand at pseudo street photography photographing people with a point and shoot camera at Venice Beach and the Santa Monica Pier. Send us a textThank you for listening and help me grow this channel. Have a great day. Front Porch Politics and Tying It Together podcast host Tim Boyum, with photojournalist John Stampf, are wrapping their cross-country trip in a rented Tesla to test the realities of electric vehicles. They've talked with everyday Americans and local leaders about the issues that matter to them this election season reporting along the way. Tim and John have arrived at Santa Monica Pier in California nine days after departing from the big apple in their Tesla, packed full of new political and electric vehicle driving experiences. Here are the total EV stats: 9 day trip Covered 14 total states, 9 battleground states Distance: 3,753 miles Time charging: 15 hours, 45 minutes of total charging, or about 1 hour 45 minutes per day Charges: 28 total charges, or about three charges per day Cost: $449.91, or $49.99 each day So, Tim's take on EV's, way cheaper than gas but more tolling on your time. He believes it was only possible in a Tesla due to their routing feature. It routes in a charger before the car dies. Would he buy an EV after this experience? No way he's telling you, too political of a topic, he said. But he feels a lot more comfortable. As far as the politics, he learned America is no doubt divided right now, even in places where the election may not be as “hot” — you can feel it. But, Tim adds, America is much different meeting people in person than it is online. Battleground states he visited handled the divisiveness differently, and wonders how the rhetoric on either side will be handled after the election. There will always be differences that will need to be worked out in the country, and there are times and places for that like on political shows. For Tim, this was an opportunity to cover politics in a unique way, and he hopes you've enjoyed the trip.
Front Porch Politics and Tying It Together podcast host Tim Boyum, with photojournalist John Stampf, are on the road. They're talking with everyday Americans and local leaders about the issues that matter to them this election season. And they're making the journey in a rented Tesla, reporting as they go on the realities of charging stops and range anxiety while crossing the country in an EV. Host Tim Boyum looks back on this leg of his EV trip from the Las Vegas strip. He brought up the fact that they have now reached two more battleground states, Arizona and Nevada. They drove 295 miles, needing three charges at an hour and 17 minutes total charging time and a total cost of about $46. While in Flagstaff, Ariz. Tim talked to a man waving a Trump flag about whether he would accept the results of the election if he lost, to which he refused. Tim highlighted this as being a potential situation for certain supporters on both sides of the aisle in this tense election season. Tim also went to Nevada to talk to a group working to instill integrity back into the election system. The former governor told him some people are barely talking to each other. They end their trip with a visit to Santa Monica Pier.

In this episode of "Sleepless in Singapore," I recount the final leg of my road trip down the West Coast of the United States, from San Francisco to San Diego, Tijuana, and back up to LA, ending in Death Valley. Our journey begins with a car swap fiasco at the LA Airport, where we end up with a convertible Chevy, perfect for cruising the Californian highways. San Diego offers us a culinary delight at Tacos El Gordo and a vibrant night at the Gaslamp District, while our brief Tijuana adventure is marked by a border-crossing mishap and a memorable breakfast at Georgina Restaurante. Back in LA, we explore iconic spots like Griffith Observatory, Venice Beach, and the Hollywood Walk of Fame, indulging in local flavors at Petit Trois and a Korean BBQ in Koreatown. Our drive through Death Valley is a scorching experience, with temperatures soaring to 49.2 degrees Celsius. The trip concludes with a Cirque du Soleil show in Vegas and a return to Philadelphia for the 4th of July celebrations, before I finally head back home to Singapore.
In this episode of Expanded Perspectives, the journey begins with a chilling tale from the shores of California. A woman and her cousin claim to have witnessed something otherworldly near the Santa Monica Pier—creatures they described as 'mermaids,' though their eerie glow and malevolent presence suggest something far more sinister. The story then shifts to the Appalachian Trail, where a father, his son, and their loyal dog spend the night in a remote shelter. But as darkness falls, they encounter a mysterious entity known only as the "Brown Man." The unsettling realization soon dawns that this being might have attacked their dog without ever touching it. Amidst these strange encounters, Kyle shares a lighter yet equally puzzling experience of his own. Despite no intention of doing so, he's found himself walking miles after running out of gas and, in a stroke of misfortune, locking himself out of his office twice in just two weeks. The episode concludes with a tale from southcentral Ohio, where a lone driver on a deserted country road encounters something bizarre—a sight that defies explanation, floating eerily near the road's edge. After the break, Cam brings up some mysteries surrounding Antarctica. In the heart of the Earth's most desolate and unforgiving expanse, whispers echo through the icy winds, carrying tales of the unknown. Antarctica, a land untouched by time, shrouded in secrecy and bound by an unspoken pact among the world's nations, remains a blank page in the story of our planet—a page that invites both wonder and trepidation. The Antarctic Treaty, a veil of diplomacy, cloaks this frozen wasteland, rendering it off-limits to the eyes of ordinary men and women. But what truths are buried beneath the layers of ice, hidden from all but a select few? In the shadowed years before the world plunged into chaos, a group of Nazi explorers ventured to the White Continent under the guise of "research." Their true purpose? Shrouded in darkness, leaving us to speculate what they sought—and perhaps found—in this remote corner of the Earth. Did they establish a foothold, a secret stronghold far from prying eyes? As the war raged on, the United States, vigilant and wary, kept a watchful gaze on their adversaries. In a move that has fueled speculation for decades, the celebrated Admiral Byrd led Operation Highjump, an expedition that some say uncovered more than ice and snow. What did Byrd witness in the icy abyss, and what secrets did he bring back that might have changed the course of history? The tales do not end there. Rumors swirl like the Antarctic blizzards, telling of Nazi technology far beyond their time, perhaps even of extraterrestrial origin. Did they unlock the secrets of flight and machinery, not of this world? And what of the persistent murmurings of alien presence, of unidentified objects cutting through the endless night of the Antarctic sky? Satellite images, innocuous to the untrained eye, reveal cracks in the ice, jagged peaks, and distant research stations. Yet to some, these are not mere geographical features but signs—clues pointing to hidden cities beneath the ice, to places where the unimaginable might dwell. UFO crash sites, they whisper, alien civilizations encased in ice, waiting. Antarctica holds its secrets close, wrapped in the cold embrace of its icy plains. And as long as it remains unexplored, the mysteries of the White Continent will continue to beckon, daring us to uncover what lies beneath. Talkin' Motorbikes with the Superbike Genius himself, Richard Stanboli of AttackYamaha. In this episode, we're going to chat about all the Laguna Seca things. Richard brought out his son Mark for the first time, which was super fun. The boys still had a little bit of an up and down weekend. Jake still dealing with his hand/arm issues, so trying to make the best of it; while Cam is making forward progress, and finished P3 in race 1 in spite of a jump-the-start 5-second penalty. Today on our episode #389 of All in the Industry®, Shari Bayer has a special show in honor of James Kent, also known as Jamal James Kent, an incredible chef, restaurateur, husband, father, and friend, who suddenly passed away this past weekend from a heart attack at the young age of 45. The New York Times wrote that James was “a distinguished chef and successful Manhattan restaurateur who seemed poised to become a food industry tycoon.” He was an extremely well-respected leader, and had already accomplished so much in our industry, and simply put, he was loved. As a tribute, we are rebroadcasting our episode #253 with James, which originally aired on Wednesday, June 3rd, 2020, when Shari spoke with him remotely during the trying times of Covid. James' company, Saga Hospitality Group, includes restaurants, Crown Shy (one Michelin star) and Saga (two Michelin stars), and cocktail bar, Overstory (No. 3 on North America's 50 Best Bars list), which are all in the same building in Manhattan's Financial District at 70 Pine Street. Crown Shy is on the ground floor, and Saga and Overstory are part of the 62nd, 63rd, 64th and 66th floors, along with private dining room, 12 terraces and 360 panoramic views. James future plans included Snackville, re-imagined culinary concepts at the amusement park on Santa Monica Pier in California as a partnership with Saga Hospitality Group and private equity platform, S C Holdings; several projects from fine dining to a fast-casual chicken sandwich concept with NBA great LeBron James, whose investment firm is LRMR Ventures; a 140-seat restaurant at 360 Park Avenue South in Manhattan, inspired by the Grand Central Oyster Bar with Executive Chef Danny Garcia, who was just named winner of Top Chef: Season 21; a new bakery and casual all-day cafe in the newly renovated Domino Sugar factory building in Brooklyn with Executive Pastry Chef Renata Ameni; and five restaurants in partnership with Paris luxury department store, Printemps, at 1 Wall Street, led by Culinary Director Gregory Gourdet. James was also working with Shari's publisher Phaidon on a new book to tell the story of his restaurants at 70 Pine and his life growing up and cooking in NYC. Shari is proud to have called James a friend. Our deepest condolences to James' wife Kelly Kent and their children Gavin and Avery, and everyone who loved James too. Thank you, James, for sharing your story with us, and always making Shari feel special. She will greatly miss you. #RIP ** On episode #253 of All in the Industry®, Shari Bayer is joined by James Kent, Executive Chef of Crown Shy, and the Owner/Partner of J2K Creative. A Greenwich Village native, James started his culinary career as a summer apprentice at Bouley when he was fifteen years old, and has since spent time in the kitchens of Babbo, Jean-Georges, and Gordon Ramsay. James joined the team at Eleven Madison Park (EMP) as a line cook and was quickly promoted to sous chef, and in 2010, he placed first in the Bocuse d'Or USA Competition; then representing the US at the international finals of the Bocuse D'Or in Lyon, France, placing 10th in the world. When he returned to New York, he was named chef de cuisine of EMP, and under his leadership, the restaurant received numerous accolades including four stars from The New York Times, three Michelin stars, and a coveted spot on World's 50 Best Restaurants. James was promoted to Executive Chef of The NoMad in the fall of 2013, the same year that it received one Michelin Star. In 2017, he left to pursue his first solo project, an ambitious pair of restaurants in the landmark Art Deco building at 70 Pine Street in New York's Financial District, with his partner Jeff Katz. Crown Shy, the first of those restaurants, opened in March 2019, and received 2 stars from The New York Times and one Michelin Star just six months after opening. Today's show also features Shari's PR tip to strive for excellence; Industry News discussion, including COVID-19; and Solo Dining/Takeout experience from Einat Admony's Taim in the West Village, NYC. Stay safe and well. ** ** Check out Shari's book, Chefwise: Life Lessons from Leading Chefs Around the World (Phaidon). #chefwisebook ** Photo Courtesy of Saga Hospitality Group. He has written 3 autobiographical adventure novels that follow his endeavors from running the merry-go-round at the Santa Monica Pier, to being a Post Office letter carrier, dairy farmer, bartender, commercial pilot, mediator and arbitrator of litigated cases, soldier in Vietnam, driving through countries with new friends to reach the Amazon and more, he's embraced it all. Today we wanted to share an episode from a little while back. We believe that it provides immense value and there are some new listeners, so we wanted to re-post it. On today's episode, Dennis sits down with Retired Santa Monica Officer Cristina Coria. Cristina was born and raised in Santa Monica, California, and grew up in a family of police officers who worked for the Santa Monica Police Department. Coria has been a police officer for almost 14 years. During this time, she has gone through two life-threatening experiences. First, she was nearly crushed to death when she was pinned up against her police car by another vehicle driven by an intoxicated driver. Second, she sustained an almost career-ending injury to her left arm after being shot by a murder suspect during a hostage standoff which occurred on the Santa Monica Pier on July 4, 2000. She sustained severe bone and nerve damage and was initially advised by doctors that she might lose her arm. After extensive reconstructive surgery she was told by doctors that she would never be able to have full use of her arm again nor return back to work. Through dedication, determination, faith and perseverance, she beat the odds and regained use of her arm. In 2000, Cristina was a contestant on the 13th season of Survivor: Cook Island and in 2001, she returned back to work full duty patrolling the streets of Santa Monica. After such hardships, she manages to keep upbeat and continues to have a positive outlook on life. Cristina talks about overcoming adversity, keeping a positive mindset when times are tough and how everything happens for a reason. On this episode of Lipps Service, Scott sits with Eric Burton and Adrian Quesada of the Austin-bred psychedelic soul duo Black Pumas. ... They get into the duo's upbringings in California and Texas, early music inspirations such as Willie Nelson and Nirvana, and the story of how they formed after Eric sang to Adrian over the phone. They also talk about Adrian's time playing in Prince's backing band, Eric's days busking along the Santa Monica Pier and his stint on American Idol, and the quick success of their Grammy-winning self-titled 2019 debut. They dive into the making of their latest album, Chronicles Of A Diamond, how they received blessings from Rodríguez and Tracy Chapman to cover "Sugar Man" and "Fast Car," and, of course, some "Top 5s." Tune in for an exciting and inspirational conversation with the coolest to ever do it — Black Pumas! (... And you'll even get to hear Eric sing a bit of their record-breaking hit song, "Colors")
Mac grew up without his father, who was incarcerated for much of Mac's childhood, but found solace in the strong female figures in his life. He first picked up a violin in elementary school and later pursued a music business degree at Arkansas Baptist College. After his father's release from prison, he opened an R&B nightclub and it was at his father's club where Mac began honing his live performance skills. In 2016, Mac moved to Los Angeles to pursue his dreams. One day when singing at the Santa Monica Pier, his friend captured Mac's performance and posted it to Facebook. The video went viral and led to collaborations with P. Diddy, Andre Harrell and Stevie Wonder. In 2019, Mac's beloved grandmother passed away, and a year later he lost his father. These events caused Mac to pause his music career and move back to Arkansas. However, one night, he had a powerful dream where his father appeared to him, reminding him of their warrior bloodline. This experience sparked a new determination within Mac to fight for his dreams.
Raymond Chandler in Santa Monica. As well as The Big Sleep and The Long Goodbye, we discuss Farewell, My Lovely, Chandler's favourite of his own novels, as we walk the noir streets of ‘Bay City' – or Santa Monica in Southern California – retracing Philip Marlowe's footsteps from City Hall to Santa Monica Pier, and chatting about Dick's hard-boiled and hilarious Chandler tribute, Sleeping Dog. Join Christine and Michelle as they recap the fifth episode of the Golden Bachelor where Gerry goes on a once in a lifetime magical date with one lucky lady. Gerry takes the ladies to the Santa Monica Pier for a group date where there is a literal rollercoaster of emotions. There are only six ladies left at the mansion but there are only three roses which represent hometown dates next week.Join us in a new season of Reality TV as Christine and Michelle recap the ABC Series the Golden Bachelor.
Si & Veronica are feeling like kids again with episode 287! It's crunch time for the ladies and Gerry as this week halves them to take the final 3 to hometowns next week. The week starts off with the most Bachelor-inspired one-on-one with Faith where they ride in a helicopter, land on a yacht, and spend time in a hot tub and she secures the first rose and hometown spot. The group date takes Gerry and the ladies to the Santa Monica Pier to let their inner child out as they play games and ride the rides. It is do or die time and Theresa confesses she is falling in love, Ellen affirms how she said that last week, and Leslie expresses her feelings more too. Gerry can't give out the group date rose and saves it for the rose ceremony where he sends Sandra, Susan, and Ellen home. The Paradise Gods listened and sent down a new Sam with a rose to give out and the boys are clamoring for a chance at it. Canadian Sam ends up giving it out to Peter after Olivia chooses John Henry for her rose over him. Mercedes chose Tyler over Will, which means he, Sean, Aaron S., and John B. all head home. It's Kat's bday in paradise and all she wants is a date card and time with Tanner and instead Rachel gets the date card and takes her ex Brayden, and then Davia comes down and takes Tanner on her date. Tanner's immediate yes and Kat's inability to just directly say how that upsets her to him leads to her spiraling into sobs and pounding a pinata in his and Davia's absence. A game of truth or dare spices things up and reveals that Jess feels locked in with Blake when she isn't sure if that's even what she wants and hasn't felt like she has gotten to explore. The beach is tense after Davia and Tanner get back from their date as we all wait to see how Kat will handle Tanner next week… Join us for what is always a good time and leave us a rating and review for a shoutout! In Los Angeles, it's basically become a holiday. They light up the Santa Monica Pier, and buildings around the city to commemorate 8/24, or Kobe Bryant Day.Given how important this day is for so many fans, and the impact Kobe still has on the league and the city, we looked back at his career and took questions from viewers/listeners to the show. First, it's interesting to think about the different ways Kobe impacts different fans, and the multiple eras he spans. For some, he's an athlete they covered professionally. For others, an athlete they watched for 20 years as an adult. That's a different experience than cheering for him as a kid, or engaging in the mythology of Kobe at the end of his career, after he retired, or even after the helicopter crash that took his life. There are many eras of Kobe Bryant, one of the many things that make him such a fascinating presence. The mailbag asks: What are some of your favorite memories covering Kobe? How did he interact with his teammates? What are the What Ifs? What if he hadn't been drafted by the Lakers? What if he hadn't hurt his Achilles? Could he have still been performing at a LeBron-esque level in his year 20? How much life did those legs have left? HOSTS: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySEGMENT 1: It's 8.24. We wanted to provide quick update about a previous set of episodes. Nakiah Cherry Chinchilla was kind enough to share the story of her husband and son's struggles with Huntington's Disease. In March of this year, her son August Gianpiero King Chinchilla passed away. In just one week, on what would be Auggie's birthday, Nakiah will be holding the celebration of life that Auggie helped planned. As Nakiah says: "While it took many iterations over the years, he never went too far from his original beach party idea. He wanted a party at the Santa Monica Pier and for his friends to ride the rides all day and eat cotton candy. And so that's what we are going to do!!" Find out more about Auggiepalooza on Facebook or GoFundMe, keep Nakiah and Auggie in your thoughts next Friday, August 4, and be sure to hug those you love.
In the first episode of season three, the Chinatown Speed Kooks join the show for a behind-the-scenes look at The Speed Project. Sebastian Chiu and Let's Get Uncomfortable cohost Jaime Chien break it down the planning, financing, and running logistics, with a surprise visit from a special guest -- and a full action plan for how to escape a desert dog mafia.

How Past Extinctions At The La Brea Tar Pit Can Teach Us About Our Climate Future If you drive through Los Angeles, you'll pass by some of California's most iconic sites—the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Universal Studios, the Santa Monica Pier. But if you don't look for it, you may miss the La Brea tar pits—a place where Ice Age life from around 50 thousand years ago got trapped and preserved in sticky black ooze. Visitors can see megafauna, including skeletons of saber tooth cats and dire wolves, along with a vast collection of specimens, including things as small as beetle wings and rodent dung. La Brea was recently named as one of the world's most important geological heritage sites by the International Union of Geological Sciences. The museum is currently planning an extensive redesign that will seek to connect visitors to research, offering lessons about climate, extinction, and survival. Dr. Lori Bettison-Varga, president and director of the Los Angeles Museum of Natural History, joins Ira to explain the significance of the site, and how a trove of Ice Age specimens can serve as a modern-day climate laboratory. Across The Country, RSV Is Overwhelming Medical Systems If you have a child—or interact with children on a regular basis—odds are you've heard about a very contagious virus: RSV, or respiratory syncytial virus. This isn't a new illness, but it has been surging across the country. This has left parents and caretakers stressed about how to keep their kids safe. Hospitals across the country are having trouble coping with this year's surge, which has come earlier and stronger than normal. This week, Science Friday is spotlighting two regions affected by the wave: Wisconsin and Washington, D.C. The two regions have their own challenges when it comes to the RSV surge. In Wisconsin, care deserts and a large elderly population make containing this virus important to avoid dangerous consequences. In Washington, D.C., hospitals are feeling the effects of years of shutting down pediatric units to make room for adult beds. Joining Ira to talk about RSV in Wisconsin and Washington D.C. are two journalists who have been following this: Jenny Peek, news editor for Wisconsin Public Radio and Aja Drain, reporter at WAMU public radio. What You Should Know About This RSV Surge Respiratory syncytial virus, known as RSV, is the number one cause of infant hospitalizations in the United States, and cases are soaring this year. Because young children have spent part—if not most—of their childhoods isolated, masking, or staying home due to the pandemic, many of their immune systems haven't been exposed to RSV until now. It's caused a huge surge in cases, and placed a heavy burden on pediatric clinics and hospitals. What do you need to know about the spike in infections? Ira talks with Dr. Carol Kao, a pediatrician and assistant professor at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, who has treated RSV for years. They dig into why this surge is happening now, the basics of the virus, how RSV is treated, and where we stand with an RSV vaccine. Mapping Brain Connections Reinforces Theories On Human Cognition Brain regions are associated with different functions—the hippocampus is responsible for long-term memory, for example, and the frontal lobe for personality, behavior, and emotions. After decades of research using sophisticated brain imaging, there's a growing consensus among neuroscientists that understanding the connections between brain regions may be even more important than the functions of the regions themselves. When it comes to understanding human cognition, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Ira speaks with Dr. Stephanie Forkel, assistant professor at the Donders Centre for Cognitive Neuroimaging at Radboud University in Nijmegen in the Netherlands, who wrote a review article in the journal Science about the importance of brain connectivity, and what it means for the future of neuroscience. Transcripts for each segment will be available the week after the show airs on sciencefriday.com.
