I'm joined by two extraordinary guests—Armin Shimerman (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine's Quark) and his wife, actor and pancreatic cancer survivor Kitty Swink—for a heartfelt, inspiring, and deeply personal conversation. We talk about the upcoming PurpleStride event at the Santa Monica Pier, the lifesaving work of PanCAN (Pancreatic Cancer Action Network), and the stories of courage, loss, and resilience that fuel this movement. From promising new drug trials to the emotional testimony of a woman who recently completed her walk while battling cancer, this episode is a reminder of why awareness and research matter. And because it wouldn't be a conversation with Armin without diving into Trek, we also explore the legacy of Deep Space Nine, the mystery behind the end of Starfleet Academy, Sirroc Lofton's return as Jake Sisko, and how James Darren found his voice again thanks to DS9. TWR Route 66 Ep 3 of the Travels With Randy podcast is here! And We Begin At The End!  Santa Monica Pier, Pasadena, and Barstow Charlotte Snowstorm Impact Discussion Bubba and Randy discussed the recent snowstorm in Charlotte, which resulted in 8 inches of snow and caused widespread disruptions. Bubba shared his experience of being stuck at home and the challenges faced by the city due to the lack of snow plows. They briefly touched on the weather conditions in other parts of the country, including Florida's iguana problem during cold weather. The conversation then shifted to the third episode of their Route 66 coverage. Route 66: History and Beginnings Bubba and Randy discussed the start of their Route 66 coverage, with Randy confirming he had begun the route from Santa Monica, its designated end point. They explored the history of Route 66, which was established in 1926 as part of a numbered highway system, though the roads already existed as trails. Randy shared that Chester Avery, known as the "father of Route 66," was instrumental in mapping and naming the route after discovering that "Route 60" was already in use. Route 66's Evolution and Impact Route 66 was originally designed as a commerce route connecting small towns from Chicago to Los Angeles, with Avery, who owned a motel in Tulsa, playing a key role in its promotion. The highway passed through downtown Los Angeles at 7th and Broadway, which was once a vibrant theater district but is now run-down. The discussion highlighted how the road evolved from dirt paths used by horse and buggy to a major transportation artery for farmers in the mid-20th century, eventually being replaced by the interstate system. Route 66's Historical Evolution Randy shared his experience exploring the original and historical routes of Route 66, highlighting its evolution from 1926 to 1938, when it became the first paved numbered highway. He explained how the route was realigned and extended to Santa Monica in the 1930s, despite its official endpoint being at Olympic and Lincoln Boulevards. Randy discussed the significance of Pasadena, noting its historical attractions like the Tournament of Roses and its role in the route, and mentioned the Figueroa tunnels, built in 1940, which rerouted Route 66 onto the Arroyo Seco Parkway. Route 66 Centennial Preservation Discussion The discussion focused on Route 66's centennial anniversary in 2026 and its current state. Randy shared insights about the varying signage and preservation efforts along the historic route across different states, noting that California does a good job by allowing cities to manage their own Route 66 markings. They discussed the end point of Route 66 in Santa Monica, where a significant sign marks its conclusion, and mentioned that Mel's Diner, originally from American Graffiti, is a popular breakfast spot near the endpoint. Route 66: American Cultural Highway The discussion focused on Route 66, its history, and its significance. Randy shared insights about the route's journey from a decommissioned highway to a symbol of American history and culture. They discussed the route's connection to the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl era, highlighted by John Steinbeck's novel "The Grapes of Wrath." Randy encouraged watching the film adaptation to better understand the experiences of those who traveled Route 66 during this period. Bubba expressed interest in rewatching the film and learning more about this historical route. Route 66: Legacy and Relevance The discussion focused on the historical significance of Route 66, its decline with the advent of the interstate system, and its cultural impact. Randy shared insights from the movie "The Grapes of Wrath" and the animated film "Cars," emphasizing key scenes that reflect the challenges faced by those who traveled the route during the 1930s. They highlighted the transition from the original Route 66 to the historic Route 66, noting the efforts to preserve its legacy. Randy assigned homework to watch these films and encouraged a reevaluation of Route 66's current state, emphasizing its relevance to small businesses and the spirit of the road. Route 66 Driving Adventure Randy shared his experience driving from Santa Monica to Chicago, offering advice for others to rent a car at LAX and start early on weekends to avoid traffic. He described driving through familiar routes, including a Tesla diner that replaced his old workplace, and emphasized taking the original Route 66 instead of freeways for a more authentic experience. Beth provided historical details about the pre-1935 route, which ran through downtown LA and Echo Park before connecting with Santa Monica Boulevard. Randy mentioned seeing a friend, Cindy, who expressed jealousy about his interaction with a computer, hinting at his close relationships with a few lifelong friends. Route 66 Journey and Challenges Randy discussed his ongoing journey along Route 66, highlighting the challenges of navigating the historic route due to poor signage and the need for guides like Austin Whittle's maps. He shared his experience at Fort Nebo, a Marine Corps base where he was briefly detained for attempting to take a picture of a Route 66 sign near the base's entrance. Randy also outlined his plan to cover different states along Route 66 over the next few months, with two weeks allocated for each state except Kansas and Texas, which he plans to cover in one episode. He emphasized the importance of preserving Route 66's history, especially during its 100th anniversary, and suggested that listeners join his Facebook page and group for more photos, stories, and detailed information The podcast is for your ears and can be found everywhere - but you should REALLY see this trip with your eyes and so come find Randy's excellent and extensive photography in our little 20,000 person page on Facebook. Send us a textWhat if addiction isn't about the substance, but the pain it numbs—and the patterns we learned to survive? We sit down with Michael Graham—retired police sergeant, former SWAT sniper, actor, and transformational coach—to explore how identity, faith, and disciplined love can transform the hardest moments. From early career missteps and a costly lie to a full-throttle return to integrity, Michael shows how separating who you are from what you did opens the door to repair, recovery, and real leadership. The conversation stretches from behavior science to spiritual practice. We unpack how patterns like control, perfectionism, and martyrdom keep us stuck; why awareness without judgment is the first step; and how to design identity through daily “votes” that align actions with values. Michael shares the routines that kept him capable under pressure—body, mind, and spirit reps—and how the same repetition strengthens compassion as a practical skill. If the word “God” makes you recoil, you'll still find an accessible path: one word for the day, one action that proves it true, repeated until it sticks. Then comes the moment that ties it all together: a hostage standoff on the Santa Monica Pier, a sniper's green light, and a surrender measured in pounds of finger pressure. Michael holds two truths in his scope—a man responsible for violence and a human made in the image of God, the son of a mother on scene. He doesn't take the shot. It's a masterclass in strength guided by love, the kind of choice that protects others without losing your soul.Walk away with a simple practice that changes everything: ask, “What would love have me do?” Use it in a meeting, at home, or in your own self-talk. a card was announced for the week of Canelo-Crawford headlined by Anthony Olascuaga vs. Juan Carlos Camacho, it will also feature Justin Viloria, Jalil Hackett, and Jamar Talley. Then, we move to this week and the fight of the week happens on Thursday. Osleys Iglesias will face Vladimir Shishkin; what is at stake is a chance to fight the IBF super middleweight titleholder. A belt currently held by Canelo Alvarez, who faces Terence Crawford the following week. Also on the card, lightweight Dzmitry Asanau, junior welterweight Jhon Orobio, super middleweight Moreno Fendero, and Canadian Olympian Wyatt Sanford.Olympian Michael Conlan returns on Friday...any thoughts on his comeback?ProBox TV has a card on Friday featuring a solid main event with "Short Dog" Jordan White facing tough veteran Rene Tellez Giron. Can White go to the next level? The card is filled with 50-50 fights and developmental fights. Of the 50-50 fights to watch, Sulaiman Segawa vs. Bryan Acosta stands out. Segawa beat Ruben Villa and nearly beat Bruce Carrington. Acosta just had a close fight with Ramon Cardenas before he got the Naoya Inoue fight. Jonhatan Cardoso, a Brazilian fighter featured on many ProBox TV cards, will face Luis Torres Valenzuela, who just stopped an aging Nicholas Walters. The bout will see two solid punchers facing each other with hopes of becoming ranked higher in the division. Another sneaky great fight is, Elijah Flores, a junior middleweight who has sparred Manny Pacquiao, facing Hayward's Damoni Cato-Cain, who has been in camp with Terence Crawford. In terms of the developmental fights, Travon Marshall, Deric Davis, Jordan Roach and Benjamin Johnson are stellar up-and-comers featured on this card. Saturday on DAZN in the U.K., Olympian Pat McCormack faces veteran Miguel Parra, who had a tough fight with Shakhram Giyasov at the Santa Monica Pier. Notables on this card are the return of Sandy Ryan, and Cameron VuongThat evening on DAZN, Eduardo “Sugar” Nunez will look to make the first defense of his IBF junior lightweight title against Christopher "Pitufo" Diaz. Nunez won the vacant title earlier this year in a very fun fight. It is strange that Nunez is not getting more publicity. Also, in Mexico, Oscar Valdez will return to the ring for the first time in 2025 against Richard Medina, a former Raymond Ford opponent. I am not sure if we can watch it, but it is good to have him back.

A special vlog-style journey through a week in my lifeWhat if making your dreams come true wasn't about chasing—but about enjoying the present moment? In this new kind of Grounded Spirits episode, I invite you into a week of my life as I live, feel, and create in real-time. This vlog-style reflection begins in my cozy workspace, where I share thoughts on how comfort supports clarity. From there, I head to the Los Angeles River and practice deep presence with the trees, the grass, and the quiet rhythm of life around me.I explore not-doing, a concept from Carlos Castaneda's work, and how it teaches us to shift dream patterns, loosen the grip of routine, and rewrite our internal programming. Along the way, I meet small creatures, attend a grounding yoga class, and introduce Plant a Dream—a new space on the website where you can root your dreams into community soil.Later in the week, I visit the ocean, reflect on its healing power, and read from round one of my book Believe: A Journey Into Yourself. I dance with Moana (Hawaiian for “ocean”), see dolphins and sea lions, and remember just how magical life can be when we're paying attention. One of my long-held dreams comes true as I perform a hula dance at the Santa Monica Pier. I speak on the importance of nurturing our inner child—and each other's—and how community really is the village we all need. The episode closes with a stop at a local art store and a sneak peek of my soon-to-launch website, five years in the making. This episode is a love letter to dreaming with your eyes open, creating with your heart, and living with presence.✨ Come see what unfolds when you water your dreams a little each day.For all the resources + plus more: https://theornelian.com/2025/07/02/how-to-make-your-dreams-come-true/

Front Porch Politics and Tying It Together podcast host Tim Boyum, with photojournalist John Stampf, are wrapping their cross-country trip in a rented Tesla to test the realities of electric vehicles. They've talked with everyday Americans and local leaders about the issues that matter to them this election season reporting along the way. Tim and John have arrived at Santa Monica Pier in California nine days after departing from the big apple in their Tesla, packed full of new political and electric vehicle driving experiences. Here are the total EV stats: 9 day trip Covered 14 total states, 9 battleground states Distance: 3,753 miles Time charging: 15 hours, 45 minutes of total charging, or about 1 hour 45 minutes per day Charges: 28 total charges, or about three charges per day Cost: $449.91, or $49.99 each day So, Tim's take on EV's, way cheaper than gas but more tolling on your time. He believes it was only possible in a Tesla due to their routing feature. It routes in a charger before the car dies. Would he buy an EV after this experience? No way he's telling you, too political of a topic, he said. But he feels a lot more comfortable. As far as the politics, he learned America is no doubt divided right now, even in places where the election may not be as “hot” — you can feel it. But, Tim adds, America is much different meeting people in person than it is online. Battleground states he visited handled the divisiveness differently, and wonders how the rhetoric on either side will be handled after the election. There will always be differences that will need to be worked out in the country, and there are times and places for that like on political shows. For Tim, this was an opportunity to cover politics in a unique way, and he hopes you've enjoyed the trip.

And they're making the journey in a rented Tesla, reporting as they go on the realities of charging stops and range anxiety while crossing the country in an EV. Host Tim Boyum looks back on this leg of his EV trip from the Las Vegas strip. He brought up the fact that they have now reached two more battleground states, Arizona and Nevada. They drove 295 miles, needing three charges at an hour and 17 minutes total charging time and a total cost of about $46.  While in Flagstaff, Ariz. Tim talked to a man waving a Trump flag about whether he would accept the results of the election if he lost, to which he refused. Tim highlighted this as being a potential situation for certain supporters on both sides of the aisle in this tense election season. Tim also went to Nevada to talk to a group working to instill integrity back into the election system. The former governor told him some people are barely talking to each other. In this episode of "Sleepless in Singapore," I recount the final leg of my road trip down the West Coast of the United States, from San Francisco to San Diego, Tijuana, and back up to LA, ending in Death Valley. Our journey begins with a car swap fiasco at the LA Airport, where we end up with a convertible Chevy, perfect for cruising the Californian highways. San Diego offers us a culinary delight at Tacos El Gordo and a vibrant night at the Gaslamp District, while our brief Tijuana adventure is marked by a border-crossing mishap and a memorable breakfast at Georgina Restaurante. Back in LA, we explore iconic spots like Griffith Observatory, Venice Beach, and the Hollywood Walk of Fame, indulging in local flavors at Petit Trois and a Korean BBQ in Koreatown. Our drive through Death Valley is a scorching experience, with temperatures soaring to 49.2 degrees Celsius. The trip concludes with a Cirque du Soleil show in Vegas and a return to Philadelphia for the 4th of July celebrations, before I finally head back home to Singapore.

In this episode of Expanded Perspectives, the journey begins with a chilling tale from the shores of California. A woman and her cousin claim to have witnessed something otherworldly near the Santa Monica Pier—creatures they described as 'mermaids,' though their eerie glow and malevolent presence suggest something far more sinister. The story then shifts to the Appalachian Trail, where a father, his son, and their loyal dog spend the night in a remote shelter. But as darkness falls, they encounter a mysterious entity known only as the "Brown Man." The unsettling realization soon dawns that this being might have attacked their dog without ever touching it. Amidst these strange encounters, Kyle shares a lighter yet equally puzzling experience of his own. Despite no intention of doing so, he's found himself walking miles after running out of gas and, in a stroke of misfortune, locking himself out of his office twice in just two weeks. The episode concludes with a tale from southcentral Ohio, where a lone driver on a deserted country road encounters something bizarre—a sight that defies explanation, floating eerily near the road's edge. After the break, Cam brings up some mysteries surrounding Antarctica. In the heart of the Earth's most desolate and unforgiving expanse, whispers echo through the icy winds, carrying tales of the unknown. Antarctica, a land untouched by time, shrouded in secrecy and bound by an unspoken pact among the world's nations, remains a blank page in the story of our planet—a page that invites both wonder and trepidation. The Antarctic Treaty, a veil of diplomacy, cloaks this frozen wasteland, rendering it off-limits to the eyes of ordinary men and women. But what truths are buried beneath the layers of ice, hidden from all but a select few? In the shadowed years before the world plunged into chaos, a group of Nazi explorers ventured to the White Continent under the guise of "research." Their true purpose? Shrouded in darkness, leaving us to speculate what they sought—and perhaps found—in this remote corner of the Earth. Did they establish a foothold, a secret stronghold far from prying eyes? As the war raged on, the United States, vigilant and wary, kept a watchful gaze on their adversaries. In a move that has fueled speculation for decades, the celebrated Admiral Byrd led Operation Highjump, an expedition that some say uncovered more than ice and snow. What did Byrd witness in the icy abyss, and what secrets did he bring back that might have changed the course of history? The tales do not end there. Rumors swirl like the Antarctic blizzards, telling of Nazi technology far beyond their time, perhaps even of extraterrestrial origin. Did they unlock the secrets of flight and machinery, not of this world? And what of the persistent murmurings of alien presence, of unidentified objects cutting through the endless night of the Antarctic sky? Satellite images, innocuous to the untrained eye, reveal cracks in the ice, jagged peaks, and distant research stations. Yet to some, these are not mere geographical features but signs—clues pointing to hidden cities beneath the ice, to places where the unimaginable might dwell. UFO crash sites, they whisper, alien civilizations encased in ice, waiting. Antarctica holds its secrets close, wrapped in the cold embrace of its icy plains. And as long as it remains unexplored, the mysteries of the White Continent will continue to beckon, daring us to uncover what lies beneath. Today we wanted to share an episode from a little while back. We believe that it provides immense value and there are some new listeners, so we wanted to re-post it. On today's episode, Dennis sits down with Retired Santa Monica Officer Cristina Coria. Cristina was born and raised in Santa Monica, California, and grew up in a family of police officers who worked for the Santa Monica Police Department. Coria has been a police officer for almost 14 years. During this time, she has gone through two life-threatening experiences. First, she was nearly crushed to death when she was pinned up against her police car by another vehicle driven by an intoxicated driver. Second, she sustained an almost career-ending injury to her left arm after being shot by a murder suspect during a hostage standoff which occurred on the Santa Monica Pier on July 4, 2000. She sustained severe bone and nerve damage and was initially advised by doctors that she might lose her arm. After extensive reconstructive surgery she was told by doctors that she would never be able to have full use of her arm again nor return back to work. Through dedication, determination, faith and perseverance, she beat the odds and regained use of her arm. In 2000, Cristina was a contestant on the 13th season of Survivor: Cook Island and in 2001, she returned back to work full duty patrolling the streets of Santa Monica. After such hardships, she manages to keep upbeat and continues to have a positive outlook on life. Cristina talks about overcoming adversity, keeping a positive mindset when times are tough and how everything happens for a reason.
