Amusement Park Disasters: Independent Parks

Morbid

Since the late nineteenth century, amusement parks have been providing countless hours of enjoyment for people all around the world. Often driven by the latest technology and advances in mechanical engineering, the thrill rides at parks like Disney Land, Great America, and other independent parks offer a controlled environment to experience terror and excitement. While these rides, and the parks in general, are very safe and held to strict safety standards, there are times when the unthinkable happens—a cable snaps, a safety harness breaks—and the once safe ride becomes a nightmare for passengers. Far more often than not, tragic amusement park accidents are the result of human foolishness or, far less often, operator error. But other times, they are a bizarre fluke; a one in a million mechanical problem no one saw coming. Either way, the results can be shocking, horrifying, and even deadly.Recommendations:Jawsh on tikTok ReferencesAdler, Eric, and Katy Bergen. 2016. This episode of The JB and Sandy Show is a whirlwind of nostalgia, laughter, and family traditions that will have you reminiscing and grinning from ear to ear.The show opens with JB's latest Instagram-inspired purchase: the ultimate battery organizer. Sandy's childhood trauma resurfaces as he recalls, “When the toy that you got for Christmas, when the batteries died, you may as well throw the toy out.” The hosts riff on the agony of missing batteries in the 70s, the OCD madness of empty slots, and the modern-day vow to never let their kids go without power. “I fill it all up with the batteries. Every slot is full. But then when I take a battery out to use it, the open slot is going to drive me insane.”

In this episode, we're joined by Kansas City entrepreneur Emily Bordner, founder and creative director of EB and Co., a modern accessories brand known for its effortless, elevated designs that spark confidence and celebrate individuality. We talk about the early days of building her brand from scratch, what sparked the initial idea, and how her pop-up shops turned into a thriving business. Emily shares the reality of juggling motherhood with entrepreneurship and the pivotal moment she realized EB and Co. was really taking off—yes, there's a Taylor Swift story! Emily's journey began back in 2012 when she couldn't find the perfect handbag: something modern, simple, affordable, and high quality. So, like many great startup stories, she decided to create her own. What started with a line of handmade leather bags quickly grew into a full collection of jewelry, cards, and hair accessories—now sold in boutiques across Kansas City, Colorado, and Texas. Whether you're dreaming of launching your own venture or simply love hearing real, inspiring stories from women making bold moves, this conversation is packed with heart, hustle, and helpful insights. In this episode, Emily shares: What inspired her to launch EB and Co. Whether entrepreneurship was always part of her story The very first product she ever sold—and what she remembers about that moment The biggest challenges she faced in the early days of her business How she balances being a mom while running a fast-growing brand The “pinch-me” moment that proved EB and Co. had arrived (Taylor alert!) What this journey has taught her personally and professionally Her No.1 piece of advice for young women ready to chase big dreams Also, don't miss Emily's book coming out soon, The Retailer's Play-Book!  "Let's be real — you didn't open your store to cry over QuickBooks, drown in dusty inventory, or wonder if your receipts spark joy. You opened it to build something fun, profitable, and totally you. Enter The Retailer's Playbook — the no-fluff, no-debt, all-heart guide to running a brick-and-mortar biz that actually works (and wows). Emily Bordner went from digging through leather scraps to seeing Taylor Swift wear her jewelry — and she's spilling everything she learned along the way. Inside, you'll find ten juicy, tried-and-tested ways to: Make more money (without selling your soul or your sanity) Find your niche and shout it from the rooftops Master merch like a pro — no design degree required Delegate like a boss and stop doing all the things Turn browsers into superfans and foot traffic into paychecks Whether you're dreaming of your first storefront or scaling your next empire, this book is your permission slip to do retail your way — with strategy, soul, and staying power. Warning: May cause spontaneous confidence, clarity, and “holy crap, I can actually do this” energy." What We're Loving In Kansas City Back to School Shopping Hack Megan is trying something new this year with her almost eleven year old daughter! She has been given $100 to spend on back to school shopping with the goal to make it go as far as she can! She had her daughter inventory her clothes and shoes and then make a list. Thrifting has quickly proven to be the way to go so far! This has been a fun way to give her some control while gaining financial literacy at the same time. Check out our thrifting guide here. Margaritaville Sarah got to check out Kansas' new Margaritaville! Margaritaville Hotel Kansas City is now open in Kansas City, KS, bringing island vibes to the Midwest. Located on the former Schlitterbahn site near the Legends, the six-story resort features 228 rooms, indoor and outdoor pools, live music, and multiple dining spots—including the popular LandShark Bar & Grill. With event space, cabanas, and local discounts, it's a tropical escape just minutes from home.

With a career spanning more than three decades, Brian's experience runs the gamut from theme parks and amphitheaters to live concerts and water attractions. He began his journey at Schlitterbahn Waterpark and later worked with House of Blues and Universal, gaining hands-on experience in both operations and entertainment production. Today, Icon Leisure Services is focused on bringing leisure-based multi-use developments to life, offering a unique blend of operational insight and creative design support. In this interview, Brian talks about operational design consulting, visualizing what doesn't exist, and lessons from 30 years in the industry. Operational Design Consulting “Let's start when we can do it with a pencil and eraser rather than a jackhammer.” Brian explains that operational design consulting is about influencing the layout and structure of a facility before construction begins. Traditional operators are often brought in after a venue is built, which leads to costly retrofits and inefficient guest or staff flow. Instead, Brian advocates for embedding operators into the planning phase early on—working alongside architects, engineers, and developers to build spaces that function seamlessly from day one. He shared examples such as walking freezers being placed on the wrong side of a kitchen, which would disrupt workflow, or facilities being designed with no thought for trash removal or vendor access. By introducing an operator's perspective before any concrete is poured, Brian and his team can help prevent these logistical headaches. This approach has led Icon Leisure Services to become a trusted sub-consultant for numerous architecture and engineering firms across the country. Visualizing What Doesn't Exist “You basically have to mentally walk through the park.” When it comes to designing new attractions or multi-use developments, Brian notes the importance—and difficulty—of visualizing something that hasn't been built yet. It's a skill developed over years of experience. He explains that he mentally walks through a future facility, applying all the lessons he's learned across operations, entertainment, and hospitality to anticipate needs for things like power access, water drainage, and guest circulation. He emphasized that this process is not done in isolation. Design teams collaborate and troubleshoot together, adjusting based on feedback and constraints. While budget limitations always factor in, Brian focuses on programming the space first—understanding how it will function—so that infrastructure needs naturally follow. Lessons from 30 Years in the Industry “It really made you appreciate where you are if you know where you've been.” Reflecting on a career that began with picking up tubes and trash at Schlitterbahn, Brian credits early mentors for instilling a strong work ethic and ownership mentality. He explained how those early experiences shaped his current approach to designing operationally efficient facilities, down to minimizing the dreaded “trash trails” from leaking liners. From overseeing massive entertainment venues to running 20-hour-a-day operations in Las Vegas, Brian described how every role added to his understanding of how people move through spaces and how teams function behind the scenes. Today, he takes pride not just in building guest-friendly environments, but also in creating workplaces where staff feel empowered and supported—a key factor, he says, in long-term success.   To learn more about Icon Leisure Services or to get in touch with Brian directly, visit iconls.com or connect via the Icon Leisure LinkedIn page. Tamara recently took a press trip to San Antonio, Texas, hosted by Visit San Antonio, to see what there was to do in San Antonio for families. She found that San Antonio has a lot of history and culture, great food, fun theme parks, and plenty of free or affordable attractions. San Antonio could make a great winter or spring break family vacation (when the weather is cooler). The city is also ideal for a girls' trip or couples getaway weekend. Top sites include: San Antonio is the theme park capital of Texas with four theme parks within a short drive. They have the largest SeaWorld of all the parks. There is also a Six Flags, Schlitterbahn water park, and Morgan's Wonderland. Morgan's Wonderland is an ultra-accessible amusement park but built so that everyone can play. Each ride and attraction has been designed from the ground up to be accessible and conscious of those with special needs. The San Antonio CityPASS can save you money if you want to visit quite a few museums and attractions (including the San Antonio Zoo). The Riverwalk extends for 15 miles and outside of the core downtown horseshoe section, it is a quiet and lush urban park. You can even kayak on the river. The Pearl is a dining and entertainment district with residences and the Hotel Emma. The food in San Antonio is great and it is a UNESCO City of Gastronomy. Some highlights: Eddie's Taco Shop, Best American Daughter, Burgerteca, Stix and Stone, The Jerk Shack, and La Panaderia In addition to the Alamo, there are four other Missions that are run by the National Park Service, which offer even more to see. The Witte Museum is great for kids with plenty of interactive exhibits and play areas. The Japanese Tea Garden in Brackenridge Park is beautiful and peaceful Hemisfair Park downtown also is great for family with young kids with splash pads and climbing structures. Tamara stayed at the Intercontinental San Antonio Riverwalk on the quieter section of the Riverwalk. There are also great resort hotels in Hill Country just outside of San Antonio. See more about Tamara's trip and reasons to visit San Antonio with kids. Other Episodes You May Enjoy Girlfriend getaway to El Paso, Texas Things to do in Austin, Texas with kids

An open place to admit no one really knows what they're doing. This week Christina P is joined by comedian and long time friend, Duncan Trussell. If there's anyone Christina talk to about her alien conspiracies, its Duncan. Christina and Duncan get philosophical about UAPs, default reality, Ram Dass, and dishwashing at Applebee's. The conversation takes a turn into worldly dangers that these parents are trying to protect their children from like creeps at Schlitterbahn and butthole hair removal videos. The internet is a scary place and what tops it all are the Instagram moms. They try to portray a perfect life, but Duncan sees right through it. The reality is that dads like Duncan and Tom are stressed from all the video games and war content they consume, among other fatherly duties. Equally, Christina relates to the stressed moms, especially the ones with toddlers. They wrap up the episode with the horrifying reality of doctors appointment for your genitalia. Christina and Duncan do a little brainstorming for ways to make the experience better for men and women.Christina P. wants to hear from you since she is seriously lacking in cool mom friends. Austin Water has lifted this week's pre-emptive city-wide boil-water notice, and say there are a few precautions to take before using water normally. Local leaders are curious why Austin Water waited 12 hours to make the water problem public on Saturday. Local COVID numbers continue dropping, leading to optimism about the spring events season - but the City is likely to remain under Stage 5 precautions for awhile longer as transmission rates and new case counts remain high. New data shows that almost all Central Texans who have died of COVID-19 had at least one serious pre-existing medical condition. Austin Community College is hosting free COVID testing today, tomorrow and Friday at select campuses. Staffing shortages are causing longer response times for 911 calls in Austin. A pack of Pflugerville Girl Scouts assisted in the arrest of a hit-and-run suspect last Sunday. Austinites and domestic partners Kirsten Dunst and Jesse Plemons have both been nominated for Oscars for their performances in the Western The Power Of The Dog. Six local hotels make a new national quality ranking, with Commodore Perry Estate coming out tops in town and #2 in the state. A proper marker for the grave of Richard Overton at Texas State Cemetery is almost ready to be installed. Schlitterbahn has about two thousand openings for summer jobs. And pleasant weather continues for the rest of the workweek, ahead of a slight weekend cooldown.

Hey everyone! Get ready to slide into this new, bizarrely summery Thanksgiving episode of Figure It Out! This week we slip into the deep, watery world of waterslides! That's right, we're talking about your favorite summer activity as a hapless, naive child! The girls make a splash this week when they cover the infamous Action Park as well as the more recent (and more disturbing) incident at Schlitterbahn. They dive into their not-so-near death experience at a waterpark and they cover more than enough other reasons to find a new summer activity for your family to enjoy. Also MAJOR CONTENT WARNING!!! We talk about children being seriously injured and killed, including major bodily harm like beheadings. If you think this might be upsetting this is not the episode for you!! Try our hair episode for some more wholesome content instead! Note: Marlena makes the mistake of saying FLESH eating bacteria at one point when she really means BRAIN eating bacteria. Who knew those were both two different things?? We live in a hellworld! Anyways, when you get to that point in the episode just remember we're talking about the brain eating horrors, not the flesh eating ones! Even With Bad News The Kids Give us Hope   Show synopsis: $300 million in Parity wallets frozen. Despite faster technology, younger generations better at delaying gratification. Portsmouth thinks more regulation will solve zoning crisis. Rand Paul assaulted. Hundreds detained on Bolshevik centennial. The big question: Would America have been better off if the US fell apart in 1787? 1861? What about now for the future? Featuring Hosts: Matt Carano, Mike Vine, and Nick Boyle   Engineered by: Matt Carano   Produced by: Tom Hudson, Matt Carano, Mike Vine, and Nick Boyle News Breaking news The Parity Multisig Wallet contract has another exploit. (Matt) https://www.reddit.com/r/ethereum/comments/7bdot1/parity_mutisig_library_suicide_whg_update/ https://github.com/paritytech/parity/issues/6995 Within the last 24 hours a hacker by the name of devopps199 posted in the Parity Github the phrase “anyone can kill your contract” Basically by making themselves the contract owner they were able permanently and irreversibly disable it from sending. We're looking at ETH worth roughly $300 Million so far. Maybe more - not including token values. Second major exploit to Parity multisig in the last 4 months. The last one in July affected 3 projects and claimed roughly $50 Million in ETH. It would have been more if Whitehat hackers hadn't intervened saving close to $200 Million in value. Parity apparently fixed that exploit but did not adopt the community audited version of their multisig afterwards, which did not contain this exploit. Gavin Wood, creator of Parity is also on another project called Polkadot, who right now has close to $90 Million in ETH stick in a Parity wallet Gen Z and Millennials are better at delaying gratification than their parents (Nick) http://reason.com/blog/2017/11/01/gen-z-and-millennials-are-better Portsmouth residents vote on charter amendments (Mike) Charter amendment one increases Portsmouth's financial disclosure requirements for city candidates. The second charter amendment, if approved, would expand the city's conflict of interest disclosure requirements to land-use board members “It's becoming more and more valuable for developers to develop or grow in Portsmouth,” Splaine said Tuesday. “That means decisions affecting tens of millions of dollars of development are being made by land-use board members and members of City Council.” “Someone serving on a land-use board, voting on who can build what and where, holds enormous power and influence,” Splaine said. “It is only reasonable -- and responsible -- for our charter to require disclosure of very basic information, such as the identity of the board member's employer, and the location of Portsmouth real estate or assets owned. Not disclosing such information can breed distrust in the integrity of that board's decisions, and cause costly lawsuits.” http://www.seacoastonline.com/news/20171031/portsmouth-residents-to-vote-on-charter-amendments Rand Paul assaulted at his home (Matt) However, worth noting that the neighbor may be charged federally because members of congress get special legal protection The attack was a shock for the community in Bowling Green, where a neighbor says he would often see Paul and Boucher out walking their dogs on the normally quiet streets. Jim Skaggs, a member of the state Republican Party executive committee, lives in the neighborhood and has known both men for years. He said they disagreed politically, but was shocked to hear of the incident. "They were as far left and right as you can be," Skaggs said. "We had heard of no friction whatsoever other than they just were difference of political opinion. Both of them walked their little dogs at about a mile and a half circle, a nice little dog trot. I'd see them out walking, maybe they might stop and speak with each other." Boucher is an anesthesiologist and a pain specialist. He invented the "Therm-A-Vest," a cloth vest partially filled with rice that when heated can be worn to relieve back pain, according to a 2005 article from the Bowling Green Daily News. http://rare.us/rare-news/across-the-u-s-a/a-man-is-in-jail-after-senator-rand-paul-was-attacked-in-his-home/ https://www.cbsnews.com/amp/news/rand-paul-attack-kentucky-bowling-green-alleged-neighbor-broken-ribs/ Texas shooting (Mike) TX shooter was ex-military >>Investigators are also probing how the attacker obtained his gun, noting that he had sought and failed to obtain a permit allowing him to carry a concealed weapon. >> "By all of the facts that we seem to know, he was not supposed to have access to a gun, so how did this happen?" Abbott said in an interview on CNN. >> Kelley worked briefly over the summer as an unarmed night security guard at a Schlitterbahn water park in New Braunfels, the company said in a statement. The company also said that Kelley passed a Texas Department of Public Safety criminal background check before beginning work there. >> Referencing the armed civilian that apparently exchanged shots with the attacker, Trump said: "Fortunately someone else had a gun that was shooting in the opposite direction" or the rampage "would have been much worse." >> No one inside the church was armed at the time of the attack, the sheriff said Monday, saying he was not surprised by that fact. "People from this community would never think this could happen," he said. >> "We have to stand up,” Boswell said. “We have to work together. We have to advocate and we have to speak out against gun violence." "Automatic weapons is the first place we start,” Jordan said. Channel 9 asked the pastors if they were comfortable or open to the idea of members carrying guns at church. They said people have brought up the idea in the past, but they want to have a gun-free zone. http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/ct-texas-church-shooting-20171106-story,amp.html http://www.wsoctv.com/news/local/local-baptist-pastors-react-to-texas-church-shooting/640480758 Hundreds detained in Moscow on centennial of communist revolution (Nick) “Several libertarians who had been attending a reading of texts by economist Adam Smith were also arrested.” http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017/11/05/hundreds-detained-moscow-nationalist-blogger-calls-revolution/ Events Feast of the Freecoast Friday November 24th 4pm-8pm at The Praxeum in Portsmouth https://www.facebook.com/events/1525697544176447/ Shire Sharing 1) Assemble the Thanksgiving gifts.
