Cavalcade of America - 1944-12-25 America for Christmas
Cavalcade of America - 1943-12-20 A Child Is Born
The Cavalcade of America's sponsor, The Du Pont Company, had profited from gunpowder during the first World War. Years of bad press led them to hire the ad agency Batten, Barton, Durstine, and Osborne. They wanted a brand perception change. The Cavalcade of America was the answer. In 1944 The Cavalcade of America was in the midst of a thirteen-year primetime run on NBC. Sponsored by Dupont, the program dramatized history and historical fiction, focusing intensely on the war at home and abroad. On Christmas night at 8PM, Walter Huston emceed a program called “America For Christmas” which took listeners around the country to showcase all the things that made different states in the United States so unique.

From 1935-53, the DuPont Company sponsored a radio program titled "Cavalcade of America." This episode dramatized the United States Constitution. The recording consists of three 78 RPM records, which were collected and digitized by the Internet Archive. Unfortunately, the B-side of the third 78 was too damaged to digitize. Hosted on Acast. In July of 1943 Dupont Cavalcade of America saluted 167 years of American freedom and presented "Listen to the People" by Stephen Vincent Benet and starring Ethel Barrymore. "Listen to the People" sounded a prophetic warning when it was first presented on July 4th 1941 and in corporation with the Council For Democracy over the NBC Blue Network, and in this rebroadcast we hear it in retrospect. Given the situation in America and the world today, this program has a message that is as valuable now as it was then... maybe even more so. This is stored in two playlists - History of Radio and the Drama playlists on this Soundcloud.com originated podcast.
Join host, Carl Amari, as we gallop into this week's episode of The Cavalcade of America. Real-life exploits of government agents come to radio life in these three adventures. First, an OSS agent parachutes into Germany in "Direct Line to Bombers" from Cloak and Dagger (originally aired on NBC on June 25, 1950). Then, Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. plays a postal inspector investigating a mail bomb in "Death in the Mail" from The Silent Men (originally aired on NBC on November 4, 1951). Finally, Henry Fonda plays an agent hunting for a spy ring operating right here in the US behind illegal radio transmitters in "Spy on the Kilocycles" from The Cavalcade of America (originally aired on NBC on October 8, 1945).
Dupont Chemical company sponsored "The Cavalcade of America" series to try to gain some respect and support from American radio listeners, who were not too enamored with some of the profits that Dupont made producing gunpowder during WW I. The show featured events in American history, dramatizing the positive aspects of the nation's past. The series ran from 1935 to 1953 with top notch historians and writers working on the show scripts. Actors were the best of the best from stage, screen and radio. The shows were not made to churn up adrenaline, but the episodes were interesting and some were amazing. Authors, playwrights, artists, inventors, industrialists are biographed in the series. Many shows dealt with inventions and scientific developments of the past and the then present. This show about Thomas Edison was such a show. He had his "enemies" "Tesla, and others when the fight or AC vs DC was in the wind... but he also contributed a huge amount of scientific inventions and processes. The track will be living in the the "Miscellaneous - History" Playlist on this Podcast originating from Soundcloud.com Thank you for the pleasure of your company. Your support is much appreciated.
