“O hábil detetive” (1945) é conto do famoso contista americano William Sydney Porter (1862-1910), sob o pseudônimo O.Henry. Some storytellers are for every season. O'Henry is one such. We grew up on his stories in English but also some of us will recall the wonderful televised adaptations of world's best stories in the series, ‘Katha Sagar'. Made in 1986, the series featured a collection of stories by writers like Katherine Mansfield, Guy de Maupassant, Leo Tolstoy, O' Henry, and Anton Chekhov. Each episode was directed by one of eight well known Indian directors, including Shyam Benegal, Kundan Shah, Ved Rahi and Satyen Bose. Most of the stories in the series were one episode long. Today's story is as much a remembrance of O'Henry as it is a hat tip to tasteful and meaningful entertainment that television used to be.Listen to Hindi kahaniyan and Urdu Kahaniyan by famous as well as lesser known writers. You will find here stories from everyone from Premchand to Ismat Chughtai ; Suryabala to Mohan Rakesh, Kaleshwar and Mannu Bhandari.
O conto foi publicado pela primeira vez em dezembro de 1905, no jornal The New York Sunday World, e no ano seguinte, foi republicado na antologia do autor, The Four Million, sob o título The gift of Magi. Happy Thanksgiving Week, everyone! Today I'll be reading a Thanksgiving story titled "Two Thanksgiving Day Gentlemen" by the legendary short story master O. Henry. It's a funny and thoughtful tale about two men bound by tradition… but I won't spoil anything! After the story, I chat a bit about our own traditions and ask an important question: Is it okay for some traditions to come to an end? I also share a Christmas book recommendation and talk about Words Christmas Gave Us by Grace Tierney. You can listen to my interview with her in last week's episode! The name O. Henry is synonymous with more than just a candy bar. It's become shorthand for a brief, punchy tale that ends with a magical little twist. And this collection, his second published, contains such classic examples as the "Gift of the Magi" and "The Cop and the Anthem." Can you guess the ironic twist ending of this podcast? This Sunday on Vintage Classic Radio's "Sunday Night Playhouse," we are thrilled to present a double bill holiday special featuring two cherished radio plays. The evening begins with "Christmas in Connecticut" from NBC Author's Playhouse, originally broadcast on December 21, 1941. Starring Ronald Reagan and Jane Wyman, this delightful episode follows a food writer who struggles to live up to her perfect homemaker image when a war hero visits her for a traditional Christmas, leading to a series of humorous misunderstandings and romantic complications. Following that, we'll enjoy "Christmas by Injunction" from CBS Screen Guild Theatre, which originally aired on August 5, 1946. Based on a story by O. Henry, this heartwarming tale is set in the old West and tells the story of a wealthy miner who attempts to orchestrate an elaborate Christmas celebration for his old hometown, only to discover that the true spirit of the season requires more personal sacrifices than he anticipated. Together, these episodes offer a perfect blend of humor, nostalgia, and the timeless joy of the holiday spirit.

This Christmas Classic has been edited (a titch) to fit the modern ear and the spoken word- but like all classics, it's stands the test of time :)
Happy October everyone! In today's episode I share how I am getting ready for the fall weather - it mostly involves apple crisp! I'd love to hear from you and some of your favorite recipes to make during the fall and Christmas season! Two quite different stories by O. Henry, both of them love stories.
On the streets of New York our narrator runs into an old buddy named Kansas Bill who he hasn't seen for a long while. After a few beers his old pal, shares a whopper of a story about how he got himself involved with an Irishman who planned to rule a small town on the coast of a small Latin American country, and how Kansas Bill was invited along. In this classic O.Henry short story, a second accountant in a small hardware store finds he has a talent for writing things that make people smile, He is soon selling his humorous writings to magazines, and one offers him a high paying job. But soon he begins running out of inspiration and finds himself chasing friends and family for funny quips-and things go downhill from there. The character of the Cisco Kid was originally created in this short story by O. Henry, but he went through a huge transformation before he became the character widely known today. The Cisco Kid is not a beloved character in his first appearance in today's story, first published in 1907. Nope, he's a vicious killer. However, by the time of his third feature film, The Old Arizona in 1927, Cisco was revamped as a witty Mexican hero, winning the Oscar for Best Actor for Warner Brothers – the second ever given! Nearly thirty films were produced with the character, along with 156 television episodes produced between 1950 and 1956. But in today's story by O. Henry, Cisco is a duplicitous scoundrel. The kind that can't be killed. And now, The Caballero's Way, by O. Henry.
