Meditation and contemplative prayer may help people take a break from the drama in their lives, and be a balm to polarization in our society. Those are just two of several takeaways from this special episode of Deacons Pod featuring Fr. Laurence Freeman, OSB, a Benedictine monk and director of the World Community for Christian Meditation. Their conversation includes details on teaching meditation to children. ABOUT THE SHOW: Deacons Pod is a podcast for everyone. But, it's especially created to inspire and give hope to people on the “threshold of faith”: Those who are thinking about going to Church and those who are thinking about leaving Church. Deacons Pod is hosted by the Paulist Deacon affiliates. The podcast is a production of the Paulist Fathers. More at deaconspod.com

Excerpt from A Memorial to be Addressed to the House of Bishops and the House of Clerical and Lay Deputies of the Protestant Episcopal Church in General Convention (October 1940): “The term Internationalism has been popularized in recent years to cover an interlocking financial, political, and economic world force for the purpose of establishing a World Government. Today Internationalism is heralded from pulpit and platform as a ‘League of Nations' or a ‘Federated Union' to which the United States must surrender a definite part of its National Sovereignty. The World Government plan is being advocated under such alluring names as the ‘New International Order,' ‘The New World Order,' ‘World Union Now,' ‘World Commonwealth of Nations,' ‘World Community,' etc. All the terms have the same objective; however, the line of approach may be religious or political according to the taste or training of the individual.” Watch my new film The Overseers for FREE https://rumble.com/v3rxdi7-the-overseers-cult-of-the-medics-chapter-x.html My site: https://www.dwtruthwarrior.com Donations: https://www.cultofthemedics.com/donate.html

See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Write me at jim@jameshazelwood.net My Weekly Newsletter with an Essay on Mysticism and Psychology https://jameshazelwood.substack.com/ Poem by William Stafford The Way it Is There's a thread you follow. It goes among things that change. But it doesn't change. People wonder about what you are pursuing. You have to explain about the thread. But it is hard for others to see. While you hold it you can't get lost. Tragedies happen; people get hurt or die; and you suffer and get old. Nothing you do can stop time's unfolding. You don't ever let go of the thread. Stuart's Bio I began my cure as rector of Grace in early January 2014, after serving as Senior Associate at St. Benedict's in Smyrna, Georgia, for over five years. Working with the entire leadership team at Grace, I have a particular passion for the intersection of contemplative practices and congregational development. Grace is an extraordinary community of nearly one thousand souls, and I feel blessed to live and pray among them as we prepare to celebrate our Bicentennial in 2028. I also serve as Assistant Professor in the Practice of Spiritual Formation and Ministry at the Candler School of Theology at Emory University. At Candler, I focus on the contextual education of the Episcopal and Anglican seminarians, exploring the dynamics of congregational life in a “laboratory of spiritual imagination.” Candler School of Theology Anglican/Episcopal Studies Program My broader work as a priest, teacher, retreat leader, and author is grounded in the Christian contemplative tradition. I continue to share in ongoing conversations with friends from the New Contemplative Exchange, a fellowship first gathered by Thomas Keating, Richard Rohr, Tilden Edwards, and Laurence Freeman at St. Benedict's Monastery in Snowmass, Colorado in August 2017. Since that time, I contributed to and co-edited the volume Contemplation and Community: A Gathering of Fresh Voices for a Living Tradition (Crossroad, 2019) and am the author of The Heart of a Calling: The Practice of Christian Mindfulness in Congregational Ministry (Crossroad, 2021). Before “church life,” I studied in the pre-med program at Lyon College in Batesville, Arkansas (B.S. in Biology, summa cum laude), and I did my initial theological studies at Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, Georgia (M.Div, honors in spiritual formation). I also completed a certificate in Anglican Studies and the Doctor of Ministry degree from the School of Theology at the University of the South in Sewanee Tennessee. With the global contemplative community, I have worked with the Shalem Institute for Spiritual Formation, the World Community for Christian Meditation, Contemplative Outreach, the Candler School of Theology, Mepkin Abbey, and others. As well, I continue my practice and research into the connections between the Christian contemplative tradition and the Tibetan/Himalayan Buddhism, and I have a deep appreciation for the intersection of poetry and contemplative practice. My wife, Lisa, and I have one daughter, Evelyn. We both grew up in Southeastern Arkansas, in the Mississippi Delta, with fried catfish, sweet tea, and mosquitoes the size of small birds. https://contemplativereformation.blog Host: James Hazelwood James Hazelwood, author, bishop, and spiritual companion, is the author of Weird Wisdom for the Second Half of Life and Everyday Spirituality: Discover a Life of Hope, Peace, and Meaning. In his last words to the community of migrant Jesus-followers, James lays out a surprising recipe for survival in an unjust and difficult world: open, authentic, vulnerable community.
Today we conclude our study in the letter of James. After all the topics he has handled in the letter, he zooms in on the community of Jesus-followers and suggests to them that it is only in open, honest, vulnerable community and friendship that they can survive the world in which they find themselves.
James concludes his letter by zooming in on the community of Jesus-followers and suggesting to them that the only way they can survive the in hospitable world in which they find themselves is with open, authentic and vulnerable community.
I'm thrilled to introduce you to Dr. Dorothy A. Martin- Neville, Ph.D., a powerful visionary, who is also a pioneer, mover, and risk-taker who is faith and humor-driven as well as committed to transformation and growth. Dr. Dorothy's story is incredibly inspirational and you'll connect immediately to the warmth and humor she exudes as she tells her story of resilience after growing up in an orphanage from birth till age 3 as an illegitimate daughter of an unwed mother in South Boston. Once she was adopted, she lived in a playpen on the outside porch until she was 6 years old so that her grandmother didn't have to acknowledge her existence inside the house. Fast forward and Dr. Dorothy is the author of several books such as Real Women Change The World: Letting the Good Girl Die so the Real Women Can Live, where she shares the importance of emotional intelligence, mindset, mindfulness, and communication as imperative tools for women in leadership. She is also an international speaker, author, consultant/master coach, and frequent radio, podcast, and television guest is also Past-President of the National Speakers Association – CT and the founder of 4 companies. In this episode you'll hear: Why do so many people choose to live in illusion- stuck in jobs that they hate or lives that don't fulfill them. We stay in situations that deplete us because there is a payoff in staying. What is the story of “the victim” and how can you get out? Why stagnancy in your life will eventually make you sick What women's leadership makes possible in the world. How Dorothy's traumatic upbringing informed her life helped her become who she is today. What is the “risk” of transformation? Why women are uniquely suited for helping the world to unify in a global community. A psychotherapist, Dr. Dorothy was in practice for 25+ years. As a motivational speaker, Dr. Dorothy brought a history of living in an orphanage, being adopted and raised in the housing projects of South Boston in a violent alcoholic home. She later became a Catholic nun, an international airline stewardess, and so much more, showing that faith, humor, and passion make anything possible. Today, whether supporting individual clients in recognizing and living their Purpose or supporting CEOs in creating a culture of Purpose within their organization, Dr. Dorothy brings first-hand knowledge of the challenges facing those who want to live and work in a culture that feeds rather than drains them. In that light, Dorothy has supported highly successful women from all levels of success, from Park Ave, NYC to a small town in Maine. Consequently, patterns and similarities in leadership are readily understood as she brings extensive wisdom, knowledge, and experience to the table. Combining her recognition that mindset and communication skills set us apart, with her ability to make the complicated simple, Dr. Dorothy is someone to learn from whether as a speaker, trainer, coach, or consultant.

Jennie's address today begins with the Lord's Prayer: "Give us this day our daily bread". Jennie then adds some spin! "Bread isn't just food. It's a metaphor, symbol and summation of a larger journey through life". It's part of the Eucharist - which Unitarians don't observe. However we don't exclude divine and transcendent experiences - and food may provide both! Jennie refers to two of our UU Principles: The 2nd: "Justice, Equity and Compassion in human relations" and the 6th: "The Goal of World Community - with Peace, Liberty and Justice for All". When it is abundant, food is so readily taken for granted. However, the social and global inequities in the distribution of - and access to - food, leads to extremes of obesity and starvation. There is also a growing community ignorance about sources of nutritious, fresh food as distinct from highly processed "junk" food from fast food outlets, insinuated daily into our psyches through TV ads. Fresh, nutritious food, provided directly from the ground - from nature, has a divine and transcendent "spirituality" about it - as does its preparation. It leads to better health outcomes. Listen on for much more "food for thought" (about food) in this thoughtful and provocative address.

The Open Conspiracy by H.G. Wells: Chapter 19 - Human life in the coming World Community The Open Conspiracy: Blue Prints for a World Revolution was published in 1928 by H. G. Wells, when he was 62 years old. It was revised and expanded in 1930 with the additional subtitle A Second Version of This Faith of a Modern Man Made More Explicit and Plain. In 1931 a further revised edition appeared titled What Are We to Do with Our Lives? A final version appeared in 1933 under its original title. Many of its ideas are anticipated in Wells's 1926 novel The World of William Clissold. The book is, in Wells's words, a "scheme to thrust forward and establish a human control over the destinies of life and liberate it from its present dangers, uncertainties and miseries."[1] It proposes that largely as the result of scientific progress, a common vision of a world "politically, socially and economically unified" is emerging among educated and influential people, and that this can be the basis of "a world revolution aiming at universal peace, welfare and happy activity" that can result in the establishment of a "world commonwealth".[2] This is to be achieved by "drawing together a proportion of all or nearly all the functional classes in contemporary communities in order to weave the beginnings of a world community out of their selection."[3] This will ultimately "be a world religion."[4] en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Open_Conspiracy Audio taken from: archive.org/details/TheOpenConspiracy

"Knowing runs deeper than having information... We should orient our research in AI in a direction that promotes the creative freedom of human beings."- Dr. Marco SchorlemmerWhy are AI systems so successful and widespread? How can we harness their potential to enhance human creativity and freedom? Is AI going to be our future saviour, or will it ultimately cause our extinction? Dr. Marco Schorlemmer explores these questions in our latest Science & Wisdom LIVE podcast episode:THE ETHICS OF AI: A HUMANIST PERSPECTIVE[0:00] Intro by Scott Snibbe[1:11] Deep Learning and Neural Networks[3:00] Will AI systems replace human expertise?[6:20] Intelligence in Western thought: from Aristotle to AI[9:37] "Intelligent" machines: number-crunching or information processing?[10:37] The multidimensional nature of human intelligence[14:26] Harnessing the potential of AI in the age of information[17:18] Beyond information processing: embracing our creative freedom[19:40] The contemplative core of scientific inquiry[21:38] How can AI be at the service of ecological intelligence?About the SpeakerDr. Marco Schorlemmer is a Tenured Scientist at the Artificial Intelligence Research Institute (IIIA-CSIC) of the Spanish National Research Council and a member of the World Community for Christian Meditation (WCCM).About Science & Wisdom LIVEThe dialogue between scientific knowledge and contemplative wisdom has the potential to catalyse growth, resilience and positive change. “Meditation is the prayer of the heart, what the early Christian monks called pure prayer... Many people speak about meditation as a feeling of coming home.”How can meditation restore our sense of wonder and help us forge communities and meaningful relationships? Is there any difference between meditation and prayer? What is the role of contemplative practices in a technologically advanced society?Fr Laurence Freeman, Benedictine monk and director of the World Community for Christian Meditation, joins us today to discuss some important insights from his spiritual search and meditation practice. Together with Scott Snibbe, he explores the potential of meditation to nurture and heal communities and relationships, to re-awaken our sense of wonder and help us journey from our minds to our hearts."The idea that humans have failed and need to improve themselves using biotechnologies, or the fear to be taken over by AI, are disturbing ideas, and they are deeply undermining of human dignity and human wonder. Meditation has the great capacity to re-humanise us and restore our sense of wonder.""We need to remember the primacy of the human, and this means a partnership between contemplative scientists and scientifically respectful spiritual teachers and seekers; and it's a partnership which will be mutually beneficial and at the heart of it there's this extraordinary capacity for a contemplative practice seriously faithfully practiced to re-humanise us and to help us to love and revere the humanity in each other."“Everything that I call 'my prayer' has to be surrendered, together with everything else that I call mine, as the ego gets gradually laid aside. What's left is 'the' prayer, or the Spirit, which is God as communion of love, dynamism of creativity and transcendence... Meditation is our way into that prayer, by making the journey from the mind to the heart.”---On the 11th of November, Fr. Laurence will join Geshe Tenzin Namdak, Dr. Elena Antonova and Dr. Wendy Hasenkamp to discuss how scientific research and meditation techniques can help us to deal with destructive emotions in these challenging times.Join this Science & Wisdom Live dialogue on Zoom on the 11th of November, at 7 pm GMT (London time).Reserve your ticket here and subscribe to our newsletter.
