Decisions are often unpredictable in the moment, which suggests they are less “free” than they feel. Seeing choices as the result of causes can soften harsh self blame and harsh judgment of others. You can want accountability and still move toward forgiveness. Naming your pain and asking “What made you act this way?” can open space for understanding without denying the harm. Emotional residue, like getting triggered by old memories, does not mean you are failing at forgiveness. It can simply show that your beliefs and judgments around the event still need updating.
