It is something of an anomaly that 1 John with his simple Greek is undoubtedly one of the most difficult books that you will find in the New Testament. It is an extremely difficult book. It is also interesting that first-year Greek students study 1 John because the Greek, generally speaking, is comparatively simple but, it is a hard, hard book. There is a great deal of conflict about what this little 5-chapter Epistle is saying. It is our privilege and our goal is to cover 1 John in its entirety in the section. The First Epistle of John is an intensely practical letter addressed to Christian readers. It warns against the dangers of false teaching and exhorts.Key theme: the tests of reality in the Christian lifeKey Verse: 1 John 5:13 (others could be 1:3; 2:1; 4:7; 4:12)For more information about this show, which includes additional notes and details, please visit the show page here or visit our home page at SeekingourGod.com MusicLife of Riley by Kevin MacLeodLink: https://incompetech.filmmusic.io/song/3976-life-of-rileyLicense: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/

The Case for Territorial Spirits, part 2

When looking to the Scriptures for insight about the so-called territorial spirits, there is not much other than a few important passages that discuss, and affirm, the reality of demonic spirits associated with territories, especially nations. Much has been written on this much-debated topic, and they frequently refer to Daniel 10 as a chapter that speaks explicitly of territorial spirits. A key passage for their existence is found in Daniel 10 where the spirit princes of Persia and Greece are mentioned specifically. These evil spiritual beings are described as ruling over an area with explicitly defined boundaries. Daniel 10 is crucial for the study of cosmic powers over the peoples of the earth. Does Daniel 10:13 and 20 speak of demons governing their respective nations? Or was Michael referring to human princes who opposed God's intervention in favor of Israel? Is there any other scriptural evidence to support territorial spirits like Paul's principalities and powers in Ephesians? Both views will now be examined. For more information about this show, which includes additional notes and details, please visit the show page here or visit our home page at SeekingourGod.com MusicLife of Riley by Kevin MacLeodLink: https://incompetech.filmmusic.io/song/3976-life-of-rileyLicense: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/

The one theme that runs through this chapter is endurance (Heb. 12:1 [“patience”], 2–3, 7). The Jewish believers who received this letter were getting weary and wanted to give up; but the writer encouraged them to keep moving forward in their Christian lives, like runners on a track (Phil. 3:12–14). The writer pointed out three divine resources (the example of Christ, the assurance of God's love, and the enablement of God's grace) that encourage a Christian to keep going when the situation is difficult. Both discouraged and careless Christians need grace and instruction. Our gracious God has wisely provided for both needs.Chapter Outline:Encouragement from Jesus' Example (vv. 1–11)Jesus as Our Pioneer and Perfecter (vv. 1–3)God's Discipline for His Children (vv. 4–11)A Call to Renewed Spiritual Vitality (vv. 12–17)The Final Warning Passage and the Supremacy of the New Covenant (vv. 18–24)Paying Careful Attention to God (vv. 25–29)PRINCIPLESJesus has provided His people an example to follow in facing life's trials.God demands holiness in His people.Jesus provides forgiveness and strength for His people.God has provided His people an eternal kingdom never to be destroyed.APPLICATIONSRespond to God's discipline with obedience to His good purposes.Avoid all actions that produce bitter fruit and contaminate the lives of others.Live like newborn people whose names are written in heaven.Respond to God with gratitude for His mercy and with reverence for His majestic character.

In verses 18-21, the writer vividly pictured the situation at Mount Sinai where the Old Covenant was given and its awesomeness and fearful nature were described (cf. Ex. 19:9–23; Deut. 9:8–19).In verses 22-24, the realities that relate to New Covenant people and to which they have come are even more impressive because they are “heavenly.” Not only is there the heavenly city, but there are also heaven-related beings, both the “myriad of angels” and the people (“spirits of the righteous made perfect”), associated with it. But above all, it is to “God, the Judge of all,” that they have come—and there are some who indeed can stand His searching scrutiny of their lives (“the spirits of the righteous made perfect;” cf. 10:14; 11:40)—and to “Jesus, the Mediator (cf. 8:6; 9:15) of a New Covenant” whose atoning blood does not cry for judgment as did Abel's but secures the acceptance of all New Covenant persons. If the readers would contemplate these things properly, they would be awed by them and more inclined to fulfill their call to the highest privileges that the New Covenant can provide.Key Takeaways:Simply, this section can be summarized as: The writer of Hebrews contrasts Mt. Sinai and the giving of the Law with the heavenly Mt. Zion and the blessings of grace in the churchAbel's blood made Cain feel guilty (and rightly so) and drove him away in despair; but Christ's blood frees us from guilt and has opened the way into the presence of God.The greater privileges of the new covenant demand greater responsiveness from believers. The patriarchs endured as they looked ahead to the city God was preparing for them. Faith enables us to turn from the approval of the world and seek only the approval of God. If God is glorified by delivering His people, He will do it. If He sees fit to be glorified by not delivering His people, then He will do that. But we must never conclude that the absence of deliverance means a lack of faith on the part of God's children.Faith looks to the future, for that is where the greatest rewards are found. The people named in this chapter (and those unnamed) did not receive “the promises” (what was promised, Heb. 11:13) but they had God's witness to their faith that one day they would be rewarded. God's purpose involves Old Testament saints as well as New Testament saints! One day all of us shall share that heavenly city that true saints look for by faith.“Without faith it is impossible to please God” (Heb. 11:6). But this kind of faith grows as we listen to His Word (Rom. 10:17) and fellowship in worship and prayer. Faith is possible to all kinds of believers in all kinds of situations. It is not a luxury for a few “elite saints.” It is a necessity for all of God's people.Applications:Trust God because of His faithfulness and reliability.Believe in God's promises, and trust in His character. The Old Testament saints were not perfect and neither are we, but they lived by faith to glorify and honor GodDo not enjoy life on earth so much that you lose sight of your heavenly destination.Be willing to face threats, persecutions, and even death as you believe God's promises.Do not focus on the problems and issues before you. Hebrews 10 Overview

The writer of Hebrews knew that Christians would find power in Christ's permanent sacrifice. The writer had seen the ineffectiveness of Old Testament sacrifices (Heb. 10:1–4), but the author had also witnessed that Christ's sacrifice produced long-lasting changes which prompted new life in His followers. Christ's sacrifice demonstrated a chosen commitment to follow God's will (10:5–10). His sacrifice did the job because it obtained forgiveness for believer's in Jesus (10:11–18), unlike the Jewish priests who regularly offered sacrifices which did not remove sin (10:11).Because Christ's sacrifice had power to change people, three appeals were given (10:19–25). These believers were urged to draw near to God, to hold fast to their confession and commitment, and to encourage up fellow believers to love and unselfish deeds. Some of these believers were considering turning away from Christ. They were reminded that abandoning Christ left them without any sacrifice for their sins. Those who left Jesus could expect judgment because they would turn away from the only solution to their sin, the body and blood of Jesus (10:26–31).The author of Hebrews had strong hope that the readers had made a commitment they would follow (10:32–39). They had faced public humiliation, imprisonment, and loss of property because they had followed Christ. They had endured in doing God's will. God would honor their faithfulness. Only Jesus could provide struggling believers the grace and strength to move forward in stalwart service to Him.The same is true for us. God will honor our faithfulness. Whether it is through all the darkest valleys or the wonderful times on top of the mountain, we are to remain faithful. Jesus will give us strength and grace to serve Him in whatever capacity He chooses.General chapter outline:The Permanence of Christ's Sacrifice and its Superiority (vv. 1–18)Permanent in contrast to Old Testament sacrifices (vv. 1–4)Permanent based on Jesus' obedience (vv. 5–10)Permanent because it secured forgiveness (vv. 11–18)The Fourth Warning (vv. 19–39)The basic admonition and an appeal to experience the power of Christ (vv. 19–25)A warning to avoid God's judgment (vv. 26–31)An encouragement to all who persevere (vv. 32–39)For more information about this show, which includes additional notes and details, please visit the show page here or visit our home page at SeekingourGod.comMusicLife of Riley by Kevin MacLeodLink: https://incompetech.filmmusic.io/song/3976-life-of-rileyLicense: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/

It is not just the external, but all of us is cleansed by His bloodChrist's death is so effective it requires no repetition. His death was final, full, complete, and once and for all. His death and blood satisfied all of the OT sacrifices. The high priest had to come into the Most Holy Place every year for an annual sacrifice. Those transgressions were covered by the blood of the many sacrifices, but not cleansed until the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross (Rom. 3:24–26). Once a year, on the Day of Atonement, the high priest offered a blood sacrifice for himself and for the sins of ignorance committed by everyone in Israel. Key Takeaways:Hebrews 9 presents a detailed contrast between the Old Covenant sanctuary (the tabernacle) and the New Covenant heavenly sanctuary where Jesus Christ now ministers. This contrast makes it clear that the New Covenant sanctuary is superior. This section of Hebrews reminds readers that the regulations and practices in the tabernacle were ordained of God. If there was any inferiority in the tabernacle service, it was not because God had not established the ritual. While the Old Covenant was in force, the ministry of the priests was ordained of God and perfectly proper. It was an earthly sanctuary, meaning made by human hands and out of earthly material. God gave spiritual wisdom and skill to Bezalel and Oholiab to do the intricate work of making the various parts of the tabernacle and its furnishings (Ex. 35–36).The writer listed the various parts and furnishings of the tabernacle because each of these carried a spiritual meaning. They were “patterns of things in the heavens” (Heb. 9:23).For more information about this show, which includes additional notes and details, please visit the show page here or visit our home page at SeekingourGod.comMusicLife of Riley by Kevin MacLeodLink: https://incompetech.filmmusic.io/song/3976-life-of-rileyLicense: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/

Key Takeaways:We can have a fresh start. Bondage to old, seemingly unbreakable patterns can be broken and replaced. We can live in the grace and freedom of Christ. The problems is not the original covenant or God Himself. The problem is the people. The people are at fault. The New Covenant is wholly of God’s grace; no sinner can become a part of this New Covenant without faith in Jesus Christ.Grace and faith go together just as the Law and works go together (Rom. 11:6). The Law says, “The one who does them shall live by them.” (Gal. 3:12). But grace says, “The work is done—believe and live!”With the New Covenant, believers have these four provisions: (1) God’s law written on our hearts and minds (meaning an inner inclination to obedience), (2) better relationship with God, (3) knowledge of God, and (4) forgiveness of sins. For more information about this show, which includes additional notes and details, please visit the show page here or visit our home page at SeekingourGod.comMusicLife of Riley by Kevin MacLeodLink: https://incompetech.filmmusic.io/song/3976-life-of-rileyLicense: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/

The Old Testament system was but shadows (Col. 2:17). The Law was but a “shadow of good things to come” (Heb. 10:1); the true and full light came in Jesus Christ.
