While most use their summer breaks for pleasure, third grade teacher Cindy Moore is using her summer vacation to tie up some loose ends concerning her grandmother's estate. When Cindy enters the storage unit that holds her grandmother's belongings, she is merely looking for items she can sell to recoup some of the rental fees she's spent paying for the unit. Instead, what she finds are secrets her grandmother has taken to the grave with her. The more Cindy uncovers, the more she wants to know. Why was her grandmother abandoned by her own mother? Why hadn't she told Cindy she'd lived in an orphanage? And how come her grandmother never mentioned she'd made history as one of the children who rode the Orphan Trains? Join Cindy as she uncovers her grandmother's hidden past and discovers the life that stole her grandmother's love.
Life is not about weight loss. It's about the outcome of the weight loss. Cindy Moore had really low energy most of her life, starting when she was a kid. Cindy never did any sports. She just couldn't seem to get her body moving enough. Cindy spent many years after having kids, just coming home from her job, as a music teacher, and laying on the couch so she could take a nap. That's all she had the energy to do. About three years ago she found a nutrition program, and it really woke her up. She was able to get off the couch and start participating in her kids lives. Now she runs marathons with her husband. Cindy had also been dealing with chronic pain and inflammation. She was able to get completely off of her pain meds as well. Cindy has an inspiring story about not letting life pass you by so have a listen.
A growing number of breweries have shifted Astoria from a drive-by town to a craft beer and spirits destination. But as the fermentation cluster of breweries, distilleries and cideries grows in Astoria, it's leading to more waste being generated from leftover yeast, hops and other proteins. In response, the City of Astoria is expected to implement a new system later this month to address the growing concerns of solid waste this industry is putting out. We'll hear from Cindy Moore, assistant city engineer for Astoria, on how this new system works. David Kroening, co-founder of Buoy Beer, and Jeremy Towsey-French, founder of Reveille Ciderworks, will also join us to share how this new system will change their costs and ways to handle waste.
On June 26, 2014, the life of Bree Moore, a 20-year old young woman with a bright future, was cut short with an act of violence. She was shot to death by her boyfriend in a fit of dating violence. The murder of Bree Moore was more than tragedy. It was yet another sad moment in an ongoing American tragedy. Dating violence is one of the unreported issues in America. The story of Bree's life, the inspiring person she was and the unspeakable tragedy that befell her, has focused a searchlight on the epidemic of teen dating violence in Alaska. Bree's parents, Butch and Cindy, wanted to make sure Bree's death was not simply a statistic. What happened to Bree should not have happened and her death should be a lesson for all Alaskans. Their efforts prompted the Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Education (known as Bree's Law) into The Alaska Safe Children's Act, which was signed into law by Governor Walker in July 2015. Because of Bree's Law, dating violence education is being taught in grades 7-12 in all Alaska public schools. It instructs teens how to develop healthy relationships, practice supportive communication skills, recognize the warning signs of an abusive relationship, and where to go for help.To learn more visit: www.breeslaw.org

PODCAST EPISODE 38: Cindy Moore from Sweet Cindy's Honey, New York and Florida, USA It is obvious when talking to Cindy Moore from Sweet Cindy's Honey that bees hold a very special place in her heart. Not only do they provide one of the greatest services on earth by pollinating the crops that we eat, they also bring great love and joy – quite literally for this US-based beekeeper: “I met Charles [Moore] in 2005 at an organic farm where I was working. He was pollinating the farmers fruits and vegetables there. He offered me a dollar more an hour to come work for him and I took it. A year later he offered me a ring and I said yes and been beekeeping together ever since.” And together they have built their business through thick and thin, falling more in love with bees by the day – in one incredible story, a wild Africanised bee swarm chased Charles a mile, stinging him over 500 times before he could finally be reunited with Cindy in their bee mobile. For the pure love of all things bee-related, I am beyond delighted to bring you Cindy Moore, of Cindy and Charles Moore, of Sweet Cindy's Honey from the United States of America for episode 36 of the BEES WITH BEN beekeeping podcast. Sweet Cindy's Honey is a beekeeping, pollination and honey production business based in New York and Florida in the USA. Cindy and Charles are what is known as migratory beekeepers – they live in New York during the summer and Florida during the winter – sounds like bliss to me! Their honey is 100% from the United States, unadulterated and unfiltered, sourced from the Moore farms, which are owned and operated by Charles who runs over 1200 hives across two locations. Cindy and Charles are dedicated to making fresh, all-natural honey with a variety of different high-quality flavours. The reviews of their product are brimming with love and praise, making Sweet Cindy's Honey one of if not THE best honey in western New York. And for Cindy, beekeeping didn't just lead her to Charles, the love of her life, it also led her to a profound understanding of why bees are so damn special. Loving everything about bees (except for being stung), Cindy reflects: “These little creatures have taught me that we all have a purpose in this world from the microscopic things to the biggest.” For all these glorious reasons, tune in to hear Cindy and I talk about the life and times of a commercial migratory beekeeper, issues beekeepers face with honey coming from China through Vietnam, and the personal journeys that are beekeeping careers. https://sweetcindyshoney.com
