Speculators predicted a surge in redundancies this autumn as the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme comes to an end on the 30th September. However, this surge doesn't appear to be forthcoming.Despite 1.9 million workers still being on furlough at the end of June, recent data from the Insolvency Service (the body employers must notify when they are making 20 or more staff redundant) shows that the proposed job cut figures in August were the lowest they have been for 7 years. The exact number of proposed job cuts stood at 12,687 in August. At the height of the pandemic, this figure stood at 150,000 job cuts per month.During the month of September, employers are able to recoup 60% of a worker's wages, up to a cap of £1,875 using the Government's Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme. The deadline for August claims is the 14 September 2021 and the deadline for September claims is the 14 October 2021. Past September, employers with staff currently on furlough will need to assess whether they can afford to pay 100% of staff members' wages going forward, or whether they will need to look at making redundancies.Employment Solicitor Amanda Glover explains in this podcast about the furlough wind down, redundancy forecasts and what you need to do as an employer by law if you are considering redundancies this autumn.

Twenty episodes ago, in early summer last year, our Taxing Matters podcast focused on the newly emerging risk of furlough fraud. Now, nearly a year on (and three iterations of the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme later) David Francis, Head of Tax Dispute Resolution at Grant Thornton, joins us to discuss this important and evolving topic. At the outset, a key concern was whether the speed with which the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme was set up might create a situation where innocent but incorrect, or fraudulent, claims would be submitted to HMRC. With an estimated 5 to 10% of all furlough claims, or approximately £3.5bn, falsely or incorrectly claimed, the Government has provided £100m of additional funding to HMRC's Fraud Investigation Services (FIS) to investigate suspected discrepancies. David discusses the tools FIS have at their disposal and the action HMRC is taking to uncover fraudulent claims – and offers some pertinent advice to businesses who may have concerns about the claims they have made.Show referencesTaxing Matters: Furlough FraudFurlough fraud and Government clawback: managing the riskHMRC's new powers to investigate furlough abuse See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

A new national lockdown is not the start to the new year we were all hoping for and in our latest podcast we look at the immediate issues for employers in light of the latest government guidance restricting movement in England. Similar restrictions are also in place in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland and with the situation ever changing, it will be important to keep check on the latest position in the regions in which you operate. Many employers will be understandably concerned about continuing support for their workforce; the government announced at the end of December that the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme is now extended on its current terms until 30 April 2021. With a general feeling that resilience is not as high as in earlier lockdowns, mental health and employee wellbeing remain high priority issues. Manager training will also be key in ensuring consistency across the business and enabling managers to understand the potential risks across a range of situations and where they should be calling on support from HR. Please contact us for more details on how we can assist you in this respect.

Our guest is Rachel Flower and she will be talking to me about “Cause and Effect” How to Create a Campaign Platform and Grow an Engaged, Focussed Community to Achieve Results She is the co-founder of the Broadroom a network of like-minded individuals not exclusively for women but with a clear intent to encourage, support and engage with fellow female entrepreneurs. She also runs legal consultancy Serenwood and has created another network called Free 2 ride which is an online activity centred offering aiming to grow a community of active members looking for a healthier lifestyle. Rachel lives in Yorkshire but you just might hear the lilt of a Welsh accent especially when speaking passionately as she does frequently on subjects very close to her heart. You'll also hear in this episode how Rachel is working hard to balance her busy career as a seasoned entrepreneur and campaigner with that of an equally busy parent. When Covid19 and lockdown hit the UK most of us were in a state of shock. Fortunately the Government did take swift action when mass redundancies were looming. We saw the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme also known as Furlough. There were other schemes announced to support the self-employed such as the Self Employed Income Support Scheme, and a Discretionary Grant Scheme co-ordinated by local authorities which has currently paid out £11 billion via 900k grants to businesses across the UK. BUT..despite the very best efforts of a wide range of tax players from self-employed to freelancers to company directors and those denied furlough or individuals simply earning less than 50% of their income from self-employment 3 million UK taxpayers are affected by this oversight and received Zero support since Lockdown began. Excluded UK is fighting their corner. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/hresource/message

In this special HR Uprising Podcast episode, Lucinda talks to HR Expert Tom Blake about the details of the recently announced Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme. They also discuss the facts and fiction surrounding furloughing, along with the right up to date clarifications from HMRC.   Certainly, we hope to clear up any confusion around this specialist topic on the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme! With guidance on current clarifications, and emphasising the need for documentation, you should have the tools you need to get to grips with furloughing.   Please note that this show was recorded on the 30th March 2020. Therefore, please refer to the most up to date HMRC guidance for any changes or further clarifications.   Key Takeaways Furloughing is a status that can be applied to employees instead of making them redundant. The Furloughing programme is for zero work, it does not cover reduced working hours. This is a grant which will be available to be repaid at the end of April. The employer continues to pay 80% of the salary which is capped at £2500. This money is subject to tax and National Insurance. You can be furloughed if you have no work, not because you have childcare duties. If you are self-isolating out of choice and there is work still available to you then you cannot be furloughed. Instead, you may receive Statutory Sick Pay (SSP). There is still a need for clarification as to whether individuals who have been identified by the NHS as at risk and are therefore required to ‘shield' but cannot get to work can be furloughed. At the time of this recording, it is unclear as to whether this should be SSP or eligible for furlough. Above all, document any decision you are making and date it along with your interpretation of the rules that are in place at that time. Therefore, you have a pack of information that can be referred back to if HMRC query it in 12-18 months' time.   Best Moments 'Martin Lewis is a personal finance expert and I believe that is where his expertise should stay, he is not an employment expert.' ‘This doesn't trump Employment Law' ‘I'm not normally this nice to HMRC but I think we have to give credit where credit is due' 'In my experience, HMRC has accepted the position I have taken as an employer 9/10 times if I have documented and dated the decisions I am making at that time.'   Valuable Resources Join the HR Uprising LinkedIn Group Host of The HR Uprising Podcast, Lucinda Carney, is also the founder and CEO of Actus Software, where you can find additional free HR Resources: https://actus.co.uk/free-performance-management-resources/ Download Tom's synopsis of the rules to date: https://www.blakeconnolly.co.uk/ HMRC on Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/claim-for-wage-costs-through-the-coronavirus-job-retention-scheme   About The Guest Tom Blake is a Global HR Director and Executive Coach.
