Flexible working is a hot topic. Amazon is the latest company to stir up debate around the virtues of giving employees the best possible work/life balance. A CBI Employment Trends survey found that 99% of all businesses surveyed believe that a flexible workforce is vital or important to competitiveness. BUT... Flexibility means different things to different people e.g. working around school runs, being able to work from home, starting later and finishing later, not having to take annual leave for appointments etc. And you need to consider diversity and inclusivity.... it's not as easy as it looks! We borrowed a quote from Sara Russell, Marketing Director at 5874 Commerce to kick start our debate: “So does the eCommerce industry need flexible working? If we want to attract and retain top talent, keep our teams engaged and provide top-level customer satisfaction then yes we do.” Tune in to listen to different approaches from three highly respected digital leaders: Ross Allsop, Director of Growth at PANGAIA, Dan Partridge, CEO at leading Shopify partner Swanky (Shopify Plus Agency) and Paul Rogers, MD at award winning digital agency Vervaunt.

Jane Van Zyl is the CEO of Working Families, a UK based charity focused on helping working parents and carers. Their mission is to remove the barriers that people with caring responsibilities face in the workplace. They do this in three ways, a free legal advice line to help people with their issues and concerns, working with employers to help create and sustain flexible working and thirdly by pushing for practical and positive change at a policy level. Working Families has contributed to the Government's Flexible Working Task Force since 2018. As part of this close consultation and a recent private members bill, employees in 2024 will be able to request flexible working from day one of their employment and be able to make that request three times in one year whereby employers must respond to the request. The ability of an employer to understand and consider flexible working is an attractive proposition for a modern, diverse and talented workforce. What does flexibility actually mean? It's not a new concept. It refers to all of the ways you can work flexibly, such as term-time working, part time, hybrid, job share etc. The pandemic shone a light on people working from home for increased periods of time. Jane explains to me that working from home during the pandemic was desperately difficult for so many in shared, cramped and isolated accommodation. However the pandemic also allowed us to understand what roles could be delivered successfully form home or other virtual locations. Many countries experienced the rise of the digital nomad! Working Families have also carried out in depth research which highlighted that lower income families were not able to access flexible working options that were available for different demographics of the workforce. Jane outlines that the role of the office has changed forever. Why do we even need offices? Perhaps it is to enhance the ability for people to collaborate, educate and celebrate as opposed to endless meetings and zoom calls. Jane explains that one of the primary keys to success for any organisation is the ability to truly understand the each job design and define the job description with clarity so that the flexible options can be identified early on for all parties with the intent to ensure that the role can ensure the role is 'human sized.' Leaders must role model or in Jane's words 'real model' how their businesses can adapt and adopt more modern processes and practices to enhance flexible working. Jane is passionate about her work as she shares a deeply personal story of how flexible working transformed her relationship with her father. Working Families as an organisation that itself is now wholly remote and their work is helping families all across the country. This episode is a fascinating and essential insight for any leader of any sized business into the changing world of work. "How to Implement Flexibility in the Workplace to Improve Employee and Business Performance"
Hi, it's Gary here. Welcome to a very special episode of The Unlock Moment. This is something we've been planning for a long time, and at the same time it's something we didn't plan at all. Something quite remarkable that gets right to the heart of The Unlock Moment.Back in October 2022 I was joined by Maika Leibbrandt in Episode 42 of The Unlock Moment. She's one of the world's very best and highest profile strengths coaches, having spent many years at the Gallup Organisation developing and leading much of their work on talents and strengths. When we spoke she'd just left her role to set up as an independent coach and we talked about her journey of Finding Freedom. That episode with Maika has been the most downloaded of all time here on The Unlock Moment. I invited her back to explore what she knows now that she didn't know then. I thought we would be talking about personal growth and business growth. And then we found something much more powerful. A new perspective on the true essence of The Unlock Moment. And that wasn't easy to find. As you'll hear, we recorded this episode and we thought we were done. And then Maika reached out to say “I just unlocked my Unlock Moment, we need to record again.”Sometimes you just need to allow a conversation to go where it needs to go and run for as long as it needs to run. Trust in the journey. Trust in the process.Welcome. Join Maika and myself on this very special exploration of The Unlock Moment.--Maika Leibbrandt: https://hellomaika.com --The Unlock Moment podcast is brought to you by Dr Gary Crotaz, PhD. Welcome back to February's installment of ‘The Latest HR News'. This month, Stuart Elliott is joined by Justine Thompson and Taylor Bradley to discuss some of the themes from trending articles in business and HR. In this episode Stuart and our guests discuss a host of themes on how success can be fostered within an organisation. They start the conversation by discussing hybrid working and its continued prominence within the workforce; reflecting on the potentially damaging monitoring of remote work and the significance of trust in order to see productivity and retention of top talent. Our guests also touch on flexibility within the workplace and how this has become, a ‘non-negotiable' to yield a successful culture in a post-covid world. They then move onto DEI and its necessity to build a winning business strategy and remain progressive. They also examine workplace culture, exploring how so-called ‘negative traits' such as competitiveness and rivalry are being reframed to promote a healthy mindset where competition is seen as a motivation to excellence. The final topic explored is job ghosting, based on an article claiming that a large percentage of Gen-Z have avoided an interview or their first day on a job. Despite Justine's scepticism of these statistics, it provides an interesting perspective on how, in a virtual world, some individuals would rather severe communication to avoid difficult conversations.Justine is an ED&I expert with over 20 years' experience in HR and people focused roles. She has a particular interest in culture, psychological safety and belonging, and has worked with organisations across many sectors to bring these topics to life through training and facilitated discussion. She has extensive experience of working with diversity to identify barriers and design data driven strategies and is the Head of Market Intelligence at Inclusive Group. Taylor is a seasoned HR executive deeply committed to shaping organisational talent strategy and fostering a culture of growth and technical innovation. He is the Head of HRBPs and Compensation at Turing, an Al-empowered Talent Cloud and has worked with founder-led startups like DocuSign and Datto to craft IPO-ready talent strategies. A lot has happened since last week's update, with some major developments in tech. This is a clear indication that the pace of change is not slowing. This week I've got five things that were brought to my attention this week. (Special thanks to those of you who send stuff my way). End of Humanity - A listener shared an article about Eliezer Yudcowski's lastest predictions, suggesting humanity could end as early as 2 years from now. I don't adhere to the doomsday narrative; however, there is some wisdom in what's driving the prediction. Nueralink Success? - The headlines are saying patients are now successfully controlling a computer with their minds. Regardless of how you feel about it, we're moving into a new age of people mixed with machines. This means you'll need to be prepared to make decisions on how far we're willing to go. Air Canada Chatbot Chaos - "The AI Did it!" It was only a matter of time before AI did something a company didn't like and the solution was to throw it under the bus. However, the law isn't in favor of an AI scapegoat, which should be an encouragement for what's ahead. Open AI Sora - The progress in advanced AI content creation marches on, and if you haven't seen Sora's ability to turn a simple text prompt into an incredible, realistic video, check it out. However, it's not in everyone's hands and that's a good thing. Is society ready for what this brings? I don't think so. Risks to Flexible Working - As if proximity bias wasn't already a problem, the latest fears around AI may present some new and heightened risks to flexible working. While I hope I'm wrong on this one, it's a risk we should all be prepared to address. Show Notes: 0:00 - Introduction 2:09 - End of Humanity 6:20 - Nueralink Success? 10:26 - Air Canada Chatbot Chaos 17:06 - Open AI Sora 23:15 - Risks to Flexible Working

Rob Sadow is the CEO and Co-Founder of Scoop and Creator of the Flex Index. He is a LinkedIn Top Voice on Flexible Work and a Forbes Future of Work 50. Rob shares how his own commuting experiences generated the initial focus on flexible working which morphed during the pandemic as employee behaviors evolved. Rob explains the genesis of the Flex Report, which tracks employers' workplace policies. He brings insights about employers' and employees' changing sentiments during 2023 and the challenges of measuring productivity and workplace policy compliance. Rob describes his expectations for flexible working in 2024 and Scoop's emphasis on the core issue designing how to work effectively. KEY TAKEAWAYS [02:45] Rob chooses consulting after college to learn by working with top companies and executives. [03:58] After a transfer to San Francisco, Rob decides to launch a business with his brother. [05:52] Scoop addresses commuting pain which Rob is familiar with from high school. [07:51] When COVID end a significant portion of commutes, Scoop has to reinvent itself. [09:56] Rob explains their bet in 2020 with the information they had at the time. [11:19] Society does not adapt to rapid change easily. [12:28] The two things COVID did to work as we knew it. [14:27] Rob details the implications of a remote and hybrid operating system. [17:00] The realization that all that is expected and promised may never come is a stark gift from COVID. [19:05] How the Flex Index came about. [22:45] What does scaling a fully remote company look like? [24:21] The biggest problem facing a fully remote or even hybrid future according to Rob. [26:13] Rob shares why compliance is complicated with examples of grey areas. [29:25] What the most successful companies are doing since compliance is challenging to enforce. [30:45] Rob offers data points reinforcing the broad benefits of offering workforce flexibility. [32:36] Rob expects recognition of higher performance from employers with flexible working policies will shift sentiment further in 2024. [34:50] Hybrid is the hardest. We must be intentional about “how” we work. [37:23] How the Flex Report data is generated and how companies can use this tool to monitor competitors. [39:16] The Flex Index's expansion plan to include granular subpolicy information. [41:09] Productivity is hard to measure and Rob proposes tracking aggregate employee outcomes instead. [43:49] IMMEDIATE ACTION TIP: To move forward productively in 2024, start with a good recurring cadence of getting feedback from employees on what's working for them so you can make adjustments. Second, update leadership development to focus on managing outcomes, projects, and performance, checking in on people you don't see daily. Third, design a better workflow supported by appropriate documentation and tools. RESOURCES Rob Sadow on LinkedIn Scoopforwork.com Scoop on X @scoopforwork The Flex Report QUOTES (edited) “It is hard for society to adapt to rapid change. Most adoption cycles take decades.” “We need people who have grown up in this experience. The executives of the future who grew up in a hybrid or remote capacity, and who will usher in a different set of best practices and understanding on what it means to build companies.” “Hybrid and remote work fundamentally are not just policies, they are operating systems, and they require a different way of thinking about culture building and relationship development and synchronous versus asynchronous work.” “The biggest problem for a lot of companies is that a lot of CEOs — in their heart of hearts — hope that hybrid work is a way-station on the way back to full-time in office. So, you have a lot of companies that have laid out a policy, but have done no more than that because they're hoping it's transient.” “Compliance is somewhat meaningless in practice: You are relying on managers who are going to raise the flag on their employees who are not coming into the office, which is a really fast ticket to total loss of employee trust and bad relationships.” “CEOs that are pushing hard on five days a week in office are almost deliberately not paying attention to the people who can't do that. And for whatever reason, that conversation still hasn't come really to the forefront.” “I think the companies that are not requiring full-time in the office are going to outperform on recruitment, retention, engagement, satisfaction, and a bunch of different key employee outcomes that most people believe are leading indicators of performance.” “The best fully remote organizations in the world are unbelievably intentional in terms of when they're online and offline and how they coordinate on those things, where they document things and how they get together in person.” “Productivity is extremely difficult to measure because there's a different ‘best' productivity metric for every different role type and it is variant by industry.”
